According to CIA world fact book, United States has a total resident population of 313,232,044 making it the third most populous country in the world. The population growth rate is 0.963%. U.S Census bureau confirms that since 2000 the growth rate completes 9.7%. The total fertility rate in the United States estimated for 2011 is 2.06 children per woman, while it was 2.01% in 2009 The growing size of the population can be an opportunity for smart phone industry, the more the demand will be, the higher the profit it will bring.

Smartphones are mostly used by teenagers and the middle aged people. Since the 15-64 years old population covers 66.8% of the population its an opportunity for smart phone industry.

United States is very urbanized country. Different types of ethnic groups are mixed and the number of languages speaking is more then 6. The majority of the populations are white Americans, secondly 12.85 of the population are covered by black Americans and the rest is Asian, Hawaiian and others.

A study done by Executive Director of Cambridge Centre for Health Leadership & Enterprise Jenny Dean shows that the Apple iPhone was the most popular with 40% of those who reported owning a smartphone using one of the iPhone models. Other types of smart phones used include RIM Blackberry with 26% Android operating system based phones with 22% Windows operating system phones with 8% and Palm with 4% Blackberry smartphones continue to be strong for business people. The growing number of Android-based phones has moved that platform ahead of the iPhone among all smartphone buyers. Obviously, rapid technological development can see this figures shift quickly, for college-age phone users as well as all users.
