INTRODUCTION
Customer Name has requested Organization Name to perform a Microsoft Accelerating Private Cloud Deployment Limited Pilot deployment in order to take advantage of the capabilities of a private cloud deployment based upon Microsoft virtualization technologies as a means of optimizing its data centers. The target infrastructure will be implemented using the core foundational components of a virtualized infrastructure. It is then managed via the integration and automation of functionalities identified as traditional foundation components of a dynamic data center: Virtualization hosts servers based on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and HyperV A monitoring solution, implemented using Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2. A private cloud management solution using System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 R2 SP1 that allows for virtual machine lifecycle management (creation, deployment, update, optimized allocation, provisioning on demand, failover management, and so on). Tenant/user self-service portal using System Center Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal (SCVMMSSP) v2.0. The purpose of this document is to provide a sufficient level of detail about each element of the solution architecture, explaining in exact and specific terms what the delivery team will build and deploy during the pilot. The purpose of this engagement is to: Conduct an Architectural Design Workshop to familiarize the IT staff at Customer Name with the capabilities and functionality of the technologies, describe how they can be implemented and identify points of integration, which facilitate management, and monitoring of the overall solution. Through a series of discussions and data collection processes, perform an assessment on up to 200 physical and/or virtual (VMware) servers within a single physical location to determine the potential benefits of deploying and managing a virtualization infrastructure based upon Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Provide a customized report detailing the results of this assessment. Deploy a Limited Scope Pilot into the Customer Name production environment, allowing Customer Name to take advantage of the automation, management, monitoring and other capabilities built into a Microsoft virtualization solution using the technologies noted above.

Background

<Describe customer environment briefly and the challenges that they may be facing. The following information may be used as an example.> The Customer Name IT environment is today only partially aligned with business needs. During IT lifecycle management, as is true in many other enterprises, new value-added services are difficult and expensive to implement, resources are not deployed optimally, service level agreements are not easily met, and costs are difficult to control while maintaining the same level of quality. The goal of the Accelerating Private Cloud Deployment Limited Scope Pilot deployment is to provide an environment that allows Customer Name to: Begin managing and deploying within a flexible virtualized environment Monitor and act upon alerts triggered by System Center Operations Manager in the environment Centrally manage and control the server infrastructure using System Center Virtual Machine Manager. Provision infrastructure and create a mechanism for chargeback to business units. Delegate the creation and deletion of Virtual Machines to business units. Retain control over how the virtual machines (VMs) are provisioned by IT. Provide the tools to develop a more automated VM creation process. This allows for simplified provisioning to the business units, since all the complexity is handled at the back end. Move the approval processes to the creation of environments rather than individual VMs. This allows for a degree of change management control while increasing the agility of the VM creation process.

PROJECT VISION AND SCOPE

1.2 Vision Statement
At Customer Name, there are ever-increasing pressures and requirements put upon the IT server infrastructure. Customer Name has identified server virtualization and implementation of a private cloud infrastructure as a way to address these pressures and at the same time increase IT agility and efficiency. The primary challenges Customer Name intends to address with server virtualization are: Physical and virtual server sprawl and associated hardware, maintenance and facility costs Lack of agility of the IT infrastructure including inability to respond to changing business requirements Lack of insight into the performance, capacity and availability characteristics of these workloads

In order to utilize fully the capabilities of an environment that is built upon Microsoft virtualization and management solutions, Customer Name will deploy a limited scope pilot in their production environment. In addition to the Limited Scope Pilot deployment itself, the engagement will also include a workshop and environment assessment. The assessment will be used as a basis for adequately sizing and scoping the deployment of a solution to address these challenges in the production environment. The assessment project fits into this vision by providing architects, operational staff and management staff with a set of reports and proposals that will enable Customer Name IT staff to make accurate decisions when virtualizing components of their infrastructure, allowing them to become more efficient at providing IT services to the organization. At the conclusion of this engagement, Customer Name expects to be able to improve significantly its ability to design and deliver virtualization and management capabilities to their organization consumers, thus laying a strong foundation for the dynamic data center. Customer Name will be able to realize the significant advantages of an automated, managed solution based upon Microsoft virtualization technologies. Additionally, the automation and self-service capabilities of a private cloud will allow for a more efficient and rapid deployment of resources in the environment.

Objective Reduced administration costs

Rationale Standardizing and reducing servers should reduce the footprint of underutilized servers that require regular maintenance. Fewer support staff could therefore manage the same service demands. Service capacity and growth are achieved with better utilization of resources and lower data center costs. By standardizing servers and using server templates, new applications can be deployed much more quickly into the production environment. By standardizing and virtualizing the environment there should be a reduction in the power consumption. It also allows underutilized resources to be turned off or moved, which also reduces the amount of energy used.

that will help Customer Name better understand the potential benefits of deploying a Hyper-V based virtualization solution. This assessment will be performed against no more than 200 physical or virtual servers in a single physical location. Once this assessment has been completed, Customer Name will be provided with a set of documentation identifying suitable virtualization candidates in the environment. It will also provide sizing recommendations for virtualization hosts and will also provide recommendations for guest VM placement for optimal performance. Since the assessment itself does not represent a change to the Customer Name production environment, it does not typically require all the standard phases typically used in the Microsoft Solution Framework (MSF), including an Envisioning, Planning, Deploying and Stabilizing phase Following the workshop, the Limited Scope Pilot will be deployed into the production environment. It is anticipated that the production environment already contains the following services and that these are functional and in a healthy state: Active Directory DNS DHCP Group Policies

The Pilot deployment will be configured manually, and will take into account the existing infrastructure, operational environment, and standards.

The deliverables for this engagement will be the following:

1.7.1

Assumptions

Organization Name will be granted access to run the MAP tool in the customer network. The work will run concurrently, and therefore assumes that there are sufficient resources available (servers, networking, and so on) to begin deploying a pilot environment without being required to purchase and deploy new hardware. Existing infrastructure services will be utilized in the Pilot deployment. Existing Organization Name change control policies will be observed. However, due to the very limited timeframe of this engagement, implementation of the solution into production may require allowances in this area in order to complete the rollout in the time allotted. The Pilot deployment will not include any work involving physical-to-virtual (P2V) conversion of guest machines.

1.7.2

Constraints

Scope of the assessment will be limited to 200 servers; these must all exist in a single physical site. Additionally, all servers must be members of the same Active Directory domain and there must be not be any firewall restrictions in place that would prevent them from being inventoried. Servers must also allow remote WMI execution. Details on how to configure inventoried machines are noted in the Getting Started Guide located here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=67240b76-3148-4e49-943d4d9ea7f77730&displaylang=en The assessment will run for a period of several days. It will therefore not be possible to capture all variations in server performance that may occur over a longer timeframe as a result of business cycles or processes. The Pilot environment will be integrated into the production environment and will therefore likely require change control processes to be observed.

Project Management Strategy

In the best possible world, all products could be delivered good, fast, and cheap. The reality is that, if any two of those attributes are achieved successfully, the third cannot be satisfied. Project management requires that a balance be struck among resources/cost, delivery dates, and features of any product. Any of those three attributes can be managed in order to optimize, constrain, or accept its outcome. Organization Name recommends the project management strategy illustrated in the figure below.

Figure 1: Project Management Trade-off Matrix

A desired upper limit on the projects budget constrains the resources that can be applied. This limited group of people is asked to deliver the desirable features by a deadline set in the future. Their goal is to work creatively to deliver as much value as possible, but meet the time deadline. In order to do this, the project team and customers must accept that some features will not be in the final product. The goal of this strategy is to understand the customers desires and needs and rank them from most important to least important. With this strategy, even important features may be left out of a specific version of a product if the benefit delivered by releasing the product outweighs the opportunity cost lost to a features absence. This strategy is known as shipping is a feature. Using the matrix in the preceding figure, other project management strategies can be devised, but they must adhere to the following rules: One column must be checked in each row indicating how that attribute will be managed. No column can be checked more than once, in order to avoid conflicting strategies.
