“If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed.”); 2. sý, “you” (e.g. “Grace to you and peace from
God our Father” – “My love to all of you in Christ Jesus”); 3. egó, “I, we, ours, our” (e.g. “the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours” – 4. pâs, “every, each; all” (e.g. “with all those everywhere who call
upon the name of our Lord”); 5. theós, “God” (e.g. “Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will
of God” – “thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”); 6. kyrios, “Lord” (e.g.

“to have; hold” (e.g. “we have the mind of Christ” – “some have no knowledge of God”); 9. sôma, “body”
(e.g. “for my part, although absent in body but present in spirit” – “It is sown a natural body; it is raised a
spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual one.”); 10. gínomai, “to be; become”
(“Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God” – “Your every act should be done with love”); 11.

01:17 (Mk 8:35; 1 Cor 1:17; 2 Cor 11:4; Gal 1:7) [to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human
eloquence] Can the terms “gospel” or “good news” be applied to God’s self-revelation through daily human
experiences? The point is not how many canonical gospels there are, but to highlight the importance of
people appropriating the Gospel in their own lives and within their cultures and contexts. There is an echo
of Gospel’s wisdom in the depths of all human experience. Are Africans therefore entitled to appropriate
their faith in Jesus Christ according to their own symbolism and so rewrite the gospel in African terms?

03:10-14 (Rom 15:20; Eph 2:20; Heb 6:1 Mt 1:18) [a foundation] Every element of the Church's
structure is important, yet all of them would falter and crumble without Christ as the cornerstone. As
citizens of the household of God, Christians must work together to ensure that the edifice stands solidly, for
others to be attracted into entering and discovering the abundant treasures of grace within. As promoters
of values, Christians must not neglect to proclaim their source by witnessing to Jesus Christ the Lord. It is he
who commissioned the apostles, he whom the prophets foretold, and he whom the Church offers to the
world.

05:13 (5:6; Rom 13:4; I Pt 2:13-14; Cf. Ex 20:13; Mt 13:38-40) [Put away the evil one from among
yourselves] Those who have been legitimately appointed commit no sin in administering punishment. For
those who refuse to obey God's laws, it is correct for society to punish them with civil or criminal sanctions.
No one sins working for justice, within the law. Actions that are necessary to preserve the good of society
are not inherently evil. This is what St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) thinks about the death penalty. The
common good of the whole society is greater and better than the good of any particular person. "The life of
certain pestiferous men is an impediment to the common good which is the concord of human society.
Therefore, certain men must be removed by death from the society of men." This is like the physician who
must amputate a diseased limb, or a cancer, for the good of the whole person.

06:14 (2 Kgs 5:7; Nm 3:25; Mt 10:28; Lk 4:6; 9:1; 12:4; Rom 6:9; 1 Cor 15:24; Rv 20:6) [God ...will also raise
us by his power] Some Sukuma Christian names for God the Father are the “All- Powerful One”; “One Who
Can’t Be Overcome”; “One Who Fits All Things Together”; and “One Who Has No Equal” (in a class by
himself). - When Gumha finally died, his disciples said: “Our master was not bewitched, but God himself has
taken him. Truly there is nobody as powerful as God. There is no one like him. He is the one who gives us
life, and he is the one who takes it.” Hence the proverb, “There is only one bull in the world (that is, God is
all-powerful).” God’s power over life and death is shown in a unique way when he raised his son Jesus
Christ from the dead. A Kaonde proverb says: “The powerful hero is a single person, but all kill the lion.” A
Sukuma proverb says: “When the elephant dies everyone goes with their knives.” This can be applied to
Jesus who shares the fruits of his death with everyone.

6:20; Col 1:23; 1 Thes 2:9; 1 Pt 1:12; 4:6; Rv 14:6) [Woe to me if I do not preach] On the road to Damascus
Paul had experienced that the mission is the work of God. Love of Christ led him to travel over the roads of
the Roman Empire as a herald, an apostle, a preacher and a teacher of the Gospel of which he declared
himself to be an ambassador in chains. Charity made him all things to all. Christian missionary activity is a
response to the love with which God loves the world. It is the spiritual energy that can make the harmony,
justice and communion grow among persons, races and peoples to which everyone aspires. It is God, who is
Love, that leads the Church towards the frontiers of humanity and calls the evangelizers to drink "from the
original source, which is Jesus Christ, from whose pierced heart flows the love of God" (Deus Caritas Est, n.
7). From this source can care, tenderness, compassion, hospitality, availability and interest in people's
problems be drawn. Even amidst growing difficulties, Christ's command to evangelize all peoples is still a
priority for Christians.

dispersed through the lands (so that indeed there is no place where they are not), and are thus by their
own Scriptures a testimony to us that we have not forged the prophecies about Christ.” (Saint Augustine,

10:17 (6:16; 12:12f.20; Gn 2:24; Rom 12:4f; Eph 2:16; 4:4; Col 3:15) [one body] By employing the image of
the body, Paul draws attention to the organic unity and diversity by which the Church breathes and grows.
Now, if baptism is the gate to the Church and the bond of unity for everyone reborn through it, yet it is not
the final destination. The road of ecumenism ultimately points towards a common celebration of the
Eucharist, which Christ entrusted to his Apostles as the sacrament of the Church's unity par excellence.
Although there are still obstacles to be overcome, all can be sure that a common Eucharist would only
strengthen the resolve to love and serve one another in imitation of the Lord. For this reason, a candid
dialogue concerning the place of the Eucharist - stimulated by a renewed and attentive study of scripture,
Patristic writings, and documents from two millennia of Christian history - will undoubtedly help to advance
to the unity of Christians and of humanity.

head of every man + “The Creator placed the head above all, with the most important senses. All of them
are here, one next to the other: vision, hearing, taste, smell; what is more, although they are so close to
one another, they do not hinder one another’s functions. The eyes are placed above the rest so that no
other part of the body might hinder their function: and they are just below the eyebrows so as to be able
to look in all directions from their vantage point. The opening of the ear is not straight, but it receives the
sounds from the air through a twisted canal. This organ too is the fruit of divine wisdom: the voice can,
without difficulty, enter and echo repeatedly, interrupted only by the bends, without anything falling into it
and hinder the function of the sense. Look also at the tongue, so elastic and delicate, able to match any
word that may be pronounced. The teeth are organs of the voice, because they offer the tongue a rest
surface. And they are at the same time a help to eat, some cutting and others chewing meat. Reflect
13
carefully on these things, observe and deepen them: for instance how air is taken in by the lungs and heat
conserved by the heart; when you observe the organs of digestion and the veins full of blood, you will be
able to deduce the inscrutable wisdom of the Creator, and will be able to say with the prophet: Such
knowledge is beyond me, far too lofty for me to reach (Sal 139,6)”. (Basil the Great, Homily «Pay attention
to yourself », 7-8).

Jesus as nurturer of life. Together they will tackle the forces of egocentrism, corruption, regionalism and
ethnocentrism that are keeping them from naming the common enemies that are slaughtering them. A

resurrected Lord make it clear that his glorified body still bears wounds. So, too, does his Body the Church.

so loved us that he gave himself up for us: This is the message of the Cross, mystery of death and of glory.

Spirit opens human intelligence to horizons that surpass it and makes it understand the beauty and truth of
God's love revealed, in fact, on the cross. A love of which no one will be able to separate us, and that is
experienced by giving one's life as Christ did.
