Lesson Plan Introduction

Topic: Geography Length of Lesson (estimated): 30 40 minutes VA Standards of Learning: WG 2.5b The student will develop map skills by b) locating selected rivers (James River, Mississippi River, Rio Grande, Huang He, Nile River, Yukon River, Porcupine, Tanana and Koyukuk Rivers), mountain ranges (Alaska Mountain Range, Brooks Mountain Range, Rocky Mountains), and lakes (Becharof Lake, Iliamna Lakes) in the United States and other countries.

Cognitive Objectives Students will: Demonstrate the ability to identify world regions on maps and globes Locate and label the main rivers in Alaska, the English Chanel, and the Atlantic Ocean Locate and label major Alaskan mountain ranges and lakes Materials/Technology and Advanced Preparation Large wall map of the World Large physical map of Alaska Outline maps of Alaska handouts Outline World map handout Teaching and Learning Sequence Introduction/Anticipatory Set Build background knowledge of world regions by modeling to the students where they currently are and England, where she comes from (using the world map).

Using the students prior knowledge of fishing and hunting, ask the students to identify lakes and the main rivers that flow near their village and winter camps.

Discuss the differences of salt and fresh water sources and (using the wall maps), ask the students to identify the possible types of bodies of water while pointing to them on the maps.

Lesson Development Using a KWL chart, ask the students to make inferences as to how the attributes and challenges of the Alaskan geography influence their lives, (fishing for food, hunting for clothing, shelter, etc.), then fill out what they know about their native geography. Ask volunteers to list what they would like to learn about Alaska, then write down the suggestions in the Want to learn column of their KWL charts.

Instruct the students (independently) to study the maps in small heterogeneous groups, then draw and label the creeks, rivers (Yukon River, Porcupine, Tanana and Koyukuk Rivers), and lakes in Alaska (Becharof Lake, Iliamna Lakes).
