Overview
All Operation Mode activities are carried out in the Computing Center Management System(CCMS). After defining operation modes, they must be scheduled in the Operation Mode Time Tablein order to be effective in the system (see the next chapter, Maintaining the Operation Mode Time Table. ) In the following example, two new operation modes are defined: DAY_OPERATIONand NIGHT_OPERATION .

Creating Operation Modes

1. To go to the CCMS: Maintain Operation Modes and Instances window follow the path Tools Administration Computing Center Management System Configuration OP Modes/Servers. Alternative:

3. Enter the name of the first operation mode you wish to create (our example is: DAY_OPERATION ). 4. Enter a short description of the operation mode. This will provide you and other users with summary of the operation and can help explain awkwardly abbreviated mode titles. 5. Select an Operation Mode Type .

Productive operation modes are for normal R/3 System operation. A Test Operation Mode can be switched manually or by using the time table. Test Operation Modes are used for systems where development work or testing is being carried out. 6. Click on the Save icon to preserve your work. 7. To create a second operation mode, click on the Create icon once more.

8. Enter the name of the second operation mode (for example, NIGHT_OPERATION ). 9. Remember to enter a short description of the operation mode for future reference. 10. Select an Operation Mode Type . 11. Click the Save icon .

Assigning an Instance to an Operation Mode

An R/3 instance is not created through an Operation Mode. Instances are created when the R/3 System is installed, and can be assigned to operation modes.

1. Click on the Instance/OP modes button.

The Dummy Operation Modeis a default of the R/3 system, and can be used as a model in configuring new operation modes.

2. To create a new instance definition, follow the path Settings Based on act. status New instances Create.

3. The instance you created is now displayed. To assign operation modes, double-click on the * OP mode-independent line. The numbers displayed on this line are derived from No. of work processes in the CCMS: Maintain Work Process Distribution screen, which you reach when you define your operation.

4. Now click on the Other operation mode button.

In this example, the DAY_OPERATIONfield is defined by the number of Work Processes, which in turn is defined by <DRIVE>\USR\SAP\<SAPSID> \SYS \Profile\<SAPSID> _<SERVICES><SYSTEM NUMBER>_<HOSTNAME>(for example, F:\USR\SAP\DEV\SYS \Profile\DEV_DVEBMGS00_ pnsfo36).

5. Enter the name of the first operation mode or use the Possible entries icon for a list of choices. In this example, we will use the default settings of 4 Dialog and 1 Background work process for the DAY_OPERATIONmode.

6. Click on the Save icon.

7. To define another mode, double click on the * OP mode-independent line.

8. To define the second operation mode, click on the Other Operation Mode button once more.

9. Enter the name of the second operation mode or use the Possible entries icon to see a list of choices. 10. To change the number of work processes for night operation, place the cursor in the Background field. 11. Click the + button to increase the number of background processes. Doing so will automatically decrease (by the same amount) the number of Dialog Work processes In . this example, we clicked the + button twice to increase the background processes by two.

When an organization operates on a nine-to-five schedule, there is usually an increase in background activity at night because fewer users log onto the system. Therefore, efficient night operation is achieved by increasing background work processes and decreasing dialog work processes. A 24-hour operation schedule, like that of an international organization operating in several time zones, should take into consideration that peak times of activity may occur at all hours. The work processes for such an operation mode should be accordingly configured with the Dialog Work Processesset higher than the Background Work Processes .

12. Notice that the background work processes were increased to three while the dialog work processes automatically decreased to two. 13. Click the Save icon to save the new settings.

The operation modes are now displayed along with the modified number of work processes.

14. Click the Save icon to save the new instance data. The new operation modes will not be active in the system until they are scheduled (see Maintaining the Operation Mode Time Table. )
