When Less Means More Can you help me figure out how to mentor a large worship team with high opinions of themselves and dysfunctional team dynamics? The young woman who asked this question is not alone. Worship leaders everywhere still deal with this issue. Self important attitudes are at the top of my bad list. I do not believe in growth for the sake of growth itself. Its always been about the heart being in submission to God. That will always be the bottom line. In many cases we can have more intimate relationships in small settings. The more a team grows the more administrative duties there are and more team dynamics to manage. For the record, I am not promoting running from those things, just that they make it difficult to build intimacy. In addition to the amount of time it takes providing each new instrumentalist with their particular charts or music, larger teams must deal with finding practice space for each section of their team, band, vocals, orchestra, brass, percussion etc. How about sharing some of that talent instead of micro-managing it? Worship leaders are redifining what it means be on a team. They are networking like never before and using partnerships and technology to expand their teams. Teams that have babied their players or singers are at the most risk. Teams that work on their personal issues and skill level are the least risk.We are going to see more teams that can easily dial up or down in their efforts and resources. As evolving worship models enable the growth of small, multiple teams, tiny churches are likely to acheive huge ministry feats. Know the one thing your team does best. Even if there are only two of you! Check for godly attitudes on a consistent basis. Choose a networking church to partner with. If your team is large, share your instrumentalists and vocalists with their smaller team. Be strategic about the partnerships you form and sync up your calendars. These kinds of relational, networking moves can dissolve attitude problems and teach your team to give what they have to others. I believe it is the future of worship teams. Melissa Saulnier

Many songwriters do not know what the process is or how to be paid for original worship songs, choir music or hymns. This is accomplished by acquiring a Christian Copyright Licensing International number (CCLI#). If you arent sure what a CCLI# is we are looking for the opportunity to tell you more about your church and the licensing process for using music. All churches must pay licensing fees every month so that original music can be legally sung in congregations around the world. This means that every time your song is sung in one of these licensed churches, you receive a small, ongoing royalty. working with a church that ministers to the homeless and this woman gave a homeless woman her shoes. So God reminded me of that story, and I started trying to argue with God. I lost that argument. Fair and square. See, I didnt want to give her my shoes; Ill be honest with you. These are my favorite pair of shoes that I own and I love them! But I knew that God was calling me to be willing. So finally He softened my heart and increased my compassion for this sweet woman, and I resolved to give her my shoes. So now I had to figure out how the heck I was going to go about doing that.

Mother Theresa said once that we cannot do great things, only small things with great love. I saw the truth of this first hand on Saturday. Something happened to me today that will forever change the way I look at life, salvation, giving and receiving.

So I decided that instead of walking over to her and handing her my shoes with little to no explanation, I devised a plan They were beat up, hard, dirty, and that was fool proof. I was going to line exposed. Though it was 30 something up behind her in line to board the plane. degrees outside and snowing sideways, Then I would sit next to her, tell her Last night I played a show with Shaun this woman had no shoes. All that hello and what I thought God was telling Groves in Tulsa, OK so this morning covered her feet were an old pair of pink me to do, the shoes would be given, and I got up early to fly home to spend house slippers that were completely that would be the end of it. But as we everyone was already lining up even feet were so comfortable, but my heart began boarding the plane, the flight though the plane wasnt there. I sat in went out to her. Again, my love for this attendant realized that her ticket was my seat while wondering on the inside woman who seemed out of place grew invalid. So she was forced to get out of why people line up so early. Anyway... abundantly with each announcement the line, go back to the ticketing agent, get a I digress. check in lady made and with each new new ticket, and reboard the plane. Well, person that lined up an hour before the I couldnt exactly stand outside and wait So while sitting at my gate, a woman plane arrived. for her, so to my sadness, I went ahead walks up to the same area and and boarded the plane. sits right across the way from me. I felt that Holy Spirit nudge allow her to sit next to me. So I prayed could just tell. All she had to carry that is very difficult to ignore. You know for that, but that didnt happen. continued looking at her, trying to make eye contact because I wanted to smile at her, but suddenly my eyes shifted to her feet.

So I decided that I would get off the plane when it landed, and wait for her. After a nice short flight, the plane landed. I walked out and waited for her. 30 people walked out. She wasnt there. Then another ten people walked out. She wasnt there. At this point my heart is breaking because Im thinking she stayed on the plane to go to Houston. So I decided I would go back on the plane and just hand them to her and then leave. At this point, there was no doubt in my mind. I was giving this woman my shoes. But as I was about to return from whence I came, so to speak, my friend came walking out of the plane! My heart start beating fast. I was so nervous! What would this woman think? Would she call me crazy? Would she think it was a scam or joke of some kind? I caught her eyes and went up to her and the dialogue went something like this: LK: hi maam, can I ask you a random question? Lady: sure LK: what size shoe do you wear? Lady: 9 (Side note... I wear a size 9 and I knew that she was going to say that, I knew she was going to wear my exact size shoe!) LK: omigosh! Thats so awesome... well, I know this sounds crazy, but I feel like God wants me to give you my shoes. Lady: I dont want to be some cover story LK: oh, trust me! This is no cover story... Im no writer! Im a Christian singer and I just want to give you my shoes (Side note: at my mention of being a Christian singer, she perked up, so I

thought that was my green light, but then things just went south) Lady: well, I dont want your shoes, these are fine, and I dont need your shoes I proceeded to tell her about mother Theresa and about how Id been given so much through Christ especially this Easter season and I wanted to give to her from what God had given to me. She was skeptical and very standoffish. The dialogue continues

So at this point I realized that she was, indeed, homeless. Im unsure as to how she got on the plane, but I did know that she had no one. She wasnt flying to visit family. She wasnt on a business trip. She was alone. With no one to greet her with flowers. She was alone with only the clothes on her back and some other garments in her plastic sack. She was about to walk out into the freezing cold rain with worn out house slippers. She was sad and I didnt know what to do. I wanted to grab her and hug her and tell her that Jesus loved her and that everything would be ok. I wanted to take the love I feel in my heart for God and the love Ive experienced from Him, and I wanted to stuff it into her heart. I was hoping that she would see the shoe offer as an act of love from God directly to her. But she continued to refuse the shoes. No matter what I said, she said no. She ended up walking ahead and me and I could tell that she wanted me to leave her alone. So I did. To my complete and utter surprise and sadness, I let her walk off. Shoeless and sad. Five seconds didnt go by before I started weeping. I wasnt crying because she rejected my shoes and hurt my feelings. No, my tears were birthed from a much deeper place. I was crying because I so badly wanted that woman to know the love and hope of Christ. That He died for her, but 3 days later rose again to give us victory over death and to give us hope in this life. I was terribly broken and confused as to why she wouldnt accept a free gift with zero strings attached. I didnt want to make this a charity case. I didnt want to do something for her so that I would feel better about myself or add another notch to my good works belt. No, I simply wanted to do what I felt God

LK: do you believe in God? Lady: I dont know, not really sure LK: thats ok! Regardless of what you believe about Him, I know He loves you and He wants you to have some sweet new shoes! And I would love to give you mine! Lady: no thank you. No. LK: if you dont want my shoes, can I ask why? Lady: I just want income LK: do you have a job? Lady: no LK: do you live here in Austin? Lady: kind of, I dont know, I guess 6 Front Yard Worship

wanted me to do. Give her my shoes. So as she walked off and my tears ran down my face, I got into the elevator. My thoughts ran wild: why would God make me go through all that just to fail? Why did the woman not receive a free gift when she clearly needed shoes? Why was I so heartbroken over this? It wasnt until I got in the car when it all hit me like a linebacker. The pain I was feeling became a doorway into a realization. In this moment, I realized a tiny percentage of what Christ must feel each time one of us rejects him in some ways. There are multiple times a day when He offers me a free gift, a blessing, a chance to obey and I reject Him. I go about my business and dont give Him a second thought. So many people reject Christs free gift of grace

and mercy. And maybe, just maybe, the Lord allowed me to go through this to give me a piece of firsthand experience of what it feels like to offer something with good intentions and love and with no strings attached but for that to be rejected. I dont say this to make you feel bad. I simply say this for two reasons. I am writing this experience in this blog to remind you how important it is to follow God when you hear that still small voice. When you feel that gentle nudge. Go for it! Im preaching to myself here because I dont always follow Him. And then secondly, think about how many opportunities we have to accept the blessings that Christ wishes to pour out on us for His glory, not ours. So, through all of this, I learned some huge lessons. I learned that even though the outcome might be different than what you thought, there is no failure when we are obedient to Gods leading. And also, every time 7 Front Yard Worship

Jesus offers me something better than what Im settling for, I need to take it. Accept it with reckless abandon. And run with Him. He is always offering us a better pair of shoes when He sees our worn-out house slippers. He knows we are about to go out into the cold, rainy world and He offers something better. Will we take Him up on His offer? He is better. He is always be better than anything or anyone this world can offer. Take Him up on His offer. He has yet to disappoint. I still have the shoes. And she still has her shoes. Im praying that somehow, even though she wasnt able to receive today, maybe a seed was planted and someone else will be able to love her and pour into her and she will, one day, accept love.

I began picking music apart until I couldnt listen to the radio without being critical. Before long I no longer enjoyed listening to music. I would write, write, write, and tear it up. Then I would re-write. I was working myself into a bundle of frustration. I was doodle-dashed. Have you ever been there? When I could take it no longer, I wrote a letter to a mentor of mine, Billy Simon, asking for advice on how to pull myself out of this place of despair. Billy has been a songwriter for Meadowgreen Music, Sony Music, Sparrow, Randy Cox Music, Riverstone Publishing, Crosswind, Still Working, Word Music, and Keybrothers/Jeff Silvey Publishing and is an accomplished musician and solo artist. It was my admiration of his music that caused me to seek him out to begin with, but it is his heart of humility that helped lead me out of doodledashed and put things in the right perspective. The main thing is to be calm in your gift and know that no matter who hears what you create that your gift matters and is pleasing to the one who gave it to you.

when I know where I want to go, but cant figure out how to get there. A few years ago would be such a season--it was the year I began writing songs. I had set a goal to write one song a month. As a mother of four children the task proved to be an exciting challenge. I began filling notebooks with ideas, and recording melodies that had begun playing in my head. I was on my way. And while I met my goal that year, I wasnt entirely pleased with the final product. No need to be overly anxious. Love life first then add some commentary. We song writers are not necessary in the whole scope. Only our message is. Sometimes our gift can be so exciting to us that we give it too much attention and time. Step out of your write, write, write stage and just write. Trees are vital for life on Earth. Theyre beautiful and its nice to have some in your yard. But if you plant one everywhere you think one can grow, soon you will have nowhere to play kickball. Have peace that you are where God want s you to be, to affect the people He wants you to affect. A little while later, my motherin-law, who was battling cancer that had metastasized to her lungs, confided in me her fear of dying of suffocation. She was a believer in Jesus, so she knew her destination, still the fear was mounting. As I wept with her and prayed with her, I felt inspired to write a song. The song expressed that God is still a God of Hope beyond our last breath and that no matter when she left us she would still be aliveforever. The song was an intimate song, written just for her, and God used it to minister peace. Was it a magnificent song? It was to her. Some months later my motherin-law passed away. I sang her song for the memorial and this time the words spoke to those

of us left behindreminding us of the promise of the resurrection and the hope that extends beyond our last breath. When I recorded my first cd this past spring, I included her song, and named it Resurrection. I have since heard from others who have lost loved ones; they share the encouragement they now receive from the words of the song. It may never make the top 40 on the radio, but it was a song written for a purpose; and that purpose continues to be fulfilled. What an honor! So the lesson is this: in the end, what matters most is that we minister where God plants us; that the words we write and sing feed whoever God had intended them to feed. When we find ourselves focusing on ourselves and our gifts, when we dont know where were going or how well ever get therewhen were feeling

glory is how one dedicated fan described them in a review on Indie Heaven. An ordained minister, Robbie Lee has been leading and directing youth for over 5 years, in addition to being a Husband and proud father of three young children. Robbie wrote Tiny Hearts for his wife about their loss of three unborn children. Tiny Hearts shares a hope that we can rest assured our Heavenly Father holds His children tighter than we could ever long for, and that we will see them one day. Robbie performed this song for a special live acoustic version during a United Way talent competition in November, 2005. The performance was viewed by more than 50,000 people and earned Robbie the second place award by popular vote. The band currently leads worship each Sunday morning at New Vision Church in Fayetteville, GA. House of Thomas continues to perform at church worship services, youth functions, schools, festivals, and more. They have sold out concerts, swarmed through music competitions and showcases, and continue to bring the gospel of Jesus to audiences through their musical gifts

House of Thomas Let us go and die with Jesus! It is intriguing to know that these words were uttered by the great Doubting Thomas. House of Thomas has centered its focus on that one mission, helping others overcome the doubt by flooding it with faith. Directed and guided by Dove Award nominee producer CR Pendleton (John Reuben, House of Heroes), brothers Robbie and Ronnie Lee, bassist Jeff Brooks and drummer Devin Merkison, are storming onto the Atlanta scene. During their second live performance, they were presented with the third place award for overall musicianship and vocal abilities at a record label sponsored talent show. Five months later, the group took the first place award for best group performance at the North Georgia Gospel Talent Search sponsored by Crown Day Promotions and PHD Studios. In June 2006, House of Thomas released their first full-length album entitled Without a Doubt produced by CR Pendleton. Throughout this album, House of Thomas features a uniquely pervasive pop-rock sound with influences ranging from U2 and Bon Jovi, to the Newsboys, Collective Soul, and

Keith Urban. House of Thomas drove a 5 week winning streak on an Atlanta-based top 20 radio station battle of the bands program by popular listener vote. This in turn opened the door for opportunities to perform with such artists as, the Newsboys, Matthew West, David Crowder Band, Third Day, By the Tree, Mat Kearney, and Down Here. With its strong lyrical message inspired by Ronnie and Robbies grandfather, More Than Just Alive has also been used numerous times as the theme song for sermon messages, radio programs, and more. The independent release, The Way We Do was quickly voted to #1 on the top 150 song radio chart Indie Heaven. As a result, the song was selected to be included on a nationally distributed radio compilation CD in June 2006. The Way We Do also struck a match with radio listeners on when it was included in the nationally syndicated program Top 5 Live among such artists as Audio Adrenaline and Sanctus Real. House of Thomas embodies integrity both on stage through powerful, spirit-led performances, and off stage where their Christian character is reflected in their personal lives. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 Every good gift comes from our Father and every gift we receive from Him is perfect. But, we soon forget; when we are faced with a trial. I have recently been overwhelmed with an abundant flow of gifts from my Father, they just seemed to never end, one after the other, barely even time to take a breath in between. Some came unexpectedly, some I had been praying for and waiting. But, all the time knowing and trusting that my Father knows my needs and will provide them. Then one day I found myself on the pity pot, feeling uncertain about a very definite need, starting to panic, crying to God Why is this so hard? When in His most tender way He reminded me of all that He has done and asked me Do you still doubt Me. Feeling like Thomas and experiencing the tenderness of Jesus when He understands and just reassures us of that and reminds us stop doubting. The rest of the verse says our Father who does not change like shifting shadows. I am so grateful that I am secure in His unchanging love. The best gift any of us could ever receive is to be safe and secure in His kingdom as His child. What a blessing and what a beautiful gift. Why not share that with someone this Christmas. The most valuable gift ever given is free! Blessings Jackie Bennett

Have you ever felt as if God has forgotten you? Life seems bleak and you have no peace. We all get like that at times, but there is something we must learn in those situations. We need to grasp that peace, true peace, doesnt come from our circumstances, but comes rather as we understand Gods faithful, just and gracious character. Even when our life is not in disintegration mode, true peace will not come to us divorced from an understanding of Gods nature. Its His character, not ours, which is our resting place! No matter what our situation, the Holy Spirit will not give us true peace irrespective of our views of God. If we fail to grasp the true character of God, then we do not know God and we are worshiping, at best, a very fractured version of the True and Living God. It is no wonder then that there is no true peace! The Holy Spirit is holy and, being holy, He cannot bless the worship of a false God. It is only in connection with the truth concerning God, the God of all grace, that the Spirit gives peace. It is the love of the true God that He has shed abroad in our heart.

progress in our Christian lives. At the core of the gospel we discover the identity and character of the great Jehovah/Yahweh, unfolded in and by the Lord Jesus Christ. This is important to grasp for Yahweh says there is, No God else beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me.To admit then that Jesus is the Savior is to admit that He is the true God manifest in the flesh. This is the heart of the good news! He who has bought and paid for us is the Mighty God! So lets say it again, to obtain the peace of God, we need to turn our eyes to the cross for it is there we see God and His character most vividly revealed. Horatius Bonar says, See these two things, the Crucifiers and the Crucified. See the Crucifiers, the haters of God and his Son. They are you, and they are me. See the Crucified. It is God himself; incarnate love. It is the God who made you, suffering, dying for the ungodly. Can you question his grace? In the light of the cross, how can you think then that God has turned against you? How can you possibly think that God is not for you? How can you think that He has forgotten you? I know that sometimes life comes at us hard and sometimes

Yahweh who has declared himself in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is then, as we know Him, that we can learn to rest in Him and true peace will come. But be warned, contrary to much popular preaching, the Holy Spirit does not produce certain feelings in us so that we can go around thinking wonderful things about ourselves, things that might gain us a false confidence before God! No indeed, the Holy Spirit, far from generating good feelings about us, continues to show us our entire lack of saving worthiness, but at the same time declares Gods immense goodness and grace towards us in Christ. At the same time as we see our worthlessness the Spirit tells us that we are fully righteous in Christ. This brings true peace for it is a peace based upon the character of God, demonstrated by the doing and dying of Christ alone. Furthermore, the Spirit does not enable us to feel or to believe, in order to comfort us by our feelings. Even when He is powerfully working in us He turns our eye away from His own work in us and fixes it on the love of God in Christ. Mark this down; there is nothing more dangerous for the believer than to be caught up in endless hours of spiritual subjectivism.

One of the great purposes of the Spirits work is to acquaint Our spirit filled meditation will be us with the true God, Jehovah/ fixed on Christ Jesus, not on our

we are left questioning whether or not we have any place or portion in this redemptive work. "Opening the white spaces will allow for the creation of a WiFi on steroids," FCC chair Kevin Martin said in a statement issued Tuesday. "It has the potential to improve wireless broadband connectivity and inspire an ever-widening array of new Internet based products and services for consumers." Some Web companies, including Google and Microsoft, backed the plan-- as did broadband access advocates. They say that allowing white spaces to be used for Internet access will encourage companies to create new wireless broadband networks because the radio airwaves are powerful The FCC said Tuesday that new devices on the white space spectrum will not interfere with existing users. "The rules represent a careful first step to permit the op-

The FCC also said that current users of wireless microphones-including Broadway theaters and others that never obtained licenses --will be able to register their locations in a database. New devices with database capabilities will be able to communicate with the registry, which will tell the devices which portions of the radio airwaves can be used. Backers of the plan cheered the FCC's decision. "Today's vote ushers in a new era of wireless broadband innovation," Microsoft said in a statement. "Like other unlicensed facilities, which enabled popular technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth, white spaces will make possible new and creative solutions to a range of broadband connectivity challenges." Opponents, including the National Association of Broadcasters, criticized the ruling. "While we appreciate the FCC's attempt to address significant issues raised by broadcasters and others, every American who values interference-free TV should be concerned by today's Commission vote," the group said in a statement.

eration of unlicensed devices in the TV white spaces and include numerous safeguards to protect incumbent services against harmful interference," the agency said. The agency said that it will require new devices to have geolocation and database access capabilities, or alternatively, spectrum-sensing capabilities, in order to prevent interference. 21 Front Yard Worship

Ministry Friends, Ive made a new album that is completely different from anything youve ever heard from me, and maybe than anything youve ever heard at all! Reign is an ambient music backdrop for times of prayer. There are six ten-minute tracks that can seamlessly flow together for an hour-long experience. Heres how the idea started: I noticed that my most fruitful prayer times happened when my mind was occupied with something that didnt take my full attention. It seemed to keep at bay the distracting thoughts that would intrude- Im hungry! I forgot to write down that appointment. Where is my phone? My foot hurts.these are the little foxes that spoil the vineyard, as the Song of Solomon says. So, I thought of making an hour of music that is not a collection of songs but is more like aural wallpaper, and Reign was born. I put it on in my office and let it play all day. It reminds me that I have a spiritual life and that God is calling me to Himself. Reign is the first in a four

And its a twofer because the collection of worship songs, Lord Be Glorified, is available as well. You can also download Reign at www.bobkilpatrick.com. Music for prayer & music for worship! Who could ask for more?! Reign- one hour of ambient music to serve as an aural backdrop to your prayer times. To serve God and others with the gifts and talents entrusted into my care. To minister to those who are less fortunate, give them a glimmer of hope and fulfill Christ's work as outlined in Luke 4:18-19. Melissa was born in West Palm Beach, in sunny South Florida. She was always surrounded by music as she grew up listening to her father playing classical guitar and directing choir at her church where she attended many concerts. She also enjoyed many other musical events in that community. Several of her relatives, including her aunt, are actively involved in music and she counts several cousins who are recording artists in their own rights. When crying hard as a baby, the only thing that could get through to her was a certain record. She would immediately stop to listen. It is fair to say that she's got music in her. Both her father and mother encouraged her to exteriorize the music that was inside her by

steering her into singing and the piano. While she was taking in the contemporary Christian music records brought to her she stuck to the piano. It would be later on in her mid teen years, in Texas, that she began showing serious interest in singing. However once she started, she never looked back. She was the soloist in children and adult choirs, school chorales and advanced choirs; she participated in competitions and sang the national anthem in several sporting events and even at her high school graduation. She took her music with her to Mexico where she sang on mission trips. She sang professionally at weddings and she has been performing the songs that her father has been writing at concerts and other church events. Some of these songs are featured on her debut album. She now leads worship at her church in Charlotte, NC, where she blesses the heart of the countless worshipers who are touched by her gift and genuine love for God and people. One thing that will strike you as you come in contact with Melissa is the joy and sincerity that she exudes. You have the correct impression that you are in the presence of the "real thing" and this is what she is able to convey eloquently through her music. She has a deceptively powerful voice for her frame and

that voice that will reverberate in deep areas of the soul. Melissa has been blessed with a talent that she is sharing with the world today. A ministry has been entrusted into her care and if you listen to her you will be convinced that this noble cause is hers and you will join her in helping carry the message to the ends of the earth.

Songwriter
who arent really writers. And now we know through science that our DNA can literally be scored and played. It is like a fingerprint. Everyones song is different because God cares for each of us individually.

April Underwood is a songwriter and director with Oikeo Music Inc. She says her mom, Patricia, has been the greatest encouragement in her life as a songwriter and as a child of God. Patricia listens to Aprils song ideas and gives her positive and spiritual input. The most important thing is just that she listens. So many songwriters do not have anyone to listen to them. Patricia also taught April the difference between excellence and perfection. When you are giving the best you can, that is your worship to God and he deserves our best. When you strive for perfection God is left out of the picture because you are then striving on your own. April grew up in church. She says that playing keyboard and singing in church helped

her become comfortable in front of people. Especially because in church it isnt about performing on a stage but its all about getting into the presence of God and when that is your focus you forget about everyone else around you. She has been able to reach another level of intimacy with God when she is worshiping God through music. This has allowed her to go to new depths in this special relationship, and intimate time with God. Its very hard to explain how special it really is says April.

When you become strong in your relationship with God you stop allowing issues to be a burden, but instead you become bold and aware. You actively partake of life and begin to speak with authority. Let the devil know that he cannot have you. He tries to slap us around but the bible This time with God has changed says to speak to that mountain Aprils life and now she longs that it be cast into the sea. We to see the music she has written must stop waiting for God to help others find that sweet do things for us and act out our place with God. It is a blessing faith. Faith in action impacts to sing and play the songs you others. have written and see peoples lives be transformed through I hope people will listen to the the message and music. April songs I write and know that says that songs are built from they are not alone. I honestly experience, emotions, and want them to know they can words. April journals her life depend on a higher source experiences so that she can see than our world has to offer. I where God has changed her have experienced loneliness and get an idea of how he wants and can say that this is a true to work in her. Everyone has statement. Music isnt just a song of worship, even those about good songs or good

lyrics when you have the Holy Spirit in you. It is far more than that. Music changes the atmosphere around you when it comes from the spirit and the deep places where God takes you. This makes me feel like these experiences are not only precious, but useful for everyone. Then it is lasting, not a fad. I want to always go where God is telling me to go and do what he is asking me to do. I want to be known for being obedient. I truly hope that kind of relationship comes across in the music I write.

April is the winner of the Beyond Music Conference 2008 songwriters contest. She won with the song I Will Stand which is a great song of testimony on many levels for April.Youll find the chart in this issue. Please report the CCLI# when you use it. The Michael Gungor Band, Lisa Gungor, and Johnny Ramirez Band were the 10 judges for this contest. She will have her song professionally recorded soon and hopefully youll be able to hear her amazing, golden,

Becoming Useful In Your Church

Chapter 6
What is the vision of your church? You may wonder why that is important. Writing with the vision of your church in mind can help you be heard when presenting your songs. The bible clearly tells us to edify the body of Christ in all that we do. As songwriters our goal is to write in and for the environment of the church we are serving in. Of course we are assuming you understand there are other important venues for your music. We are focusing on worship in the church. It is a good idea to spend some time getting to knhow your worship pastor and senior pastor before you present your music to them. Having a genuine relationship with them will help tremendously. Once that has been established let your worship pastor know that you have a vision for original music. Just remember that initially you may get a hesitant response, but you have faithful to make the attempt to communicate. God will do the rest in time. More than likely all of us have experienced that moment when we barely received a nod of the head while expressing our vision. It takes time for ideas to sink into the hearts and minds of those we have communicated them to. Here are some tips that might help: Make an appointment so that you will have the full attention of your pastor while communicating. Formulate your thoughts ahead of time so that you can communicate clearly and simply. Allow your pastor time to process what youve shared. In case your vision does not find its way into your pastors heart, spend time in prayer seeking a support group. If your pastor does receive the idea, begin to take notes during sermons so that you can fully grasp the vision and heart of your pastor. Your pastor may not be a musician or singer, but he knows theology. Ask him to check your songs for any mistaken ideas or thoughts. It might be a good idea to ask your worship pastor if you can start a worship band of your own. This is a good way to teach and learn original music without stepping on the toes of other leaders. Dont ever stop pursuing your goals just because one avenue doesnt work. You may have to pioneer the way. It is well worth the effort and there are more tools available than ever before. What about asking your worship pastor if he needs any help with projects. If he writes music maybe
35 Front Yard Worship

he would like some help typing the lyrics into the computer and saving song files. You will learn about his or her heart when working together on projects whether they are original music or not. Eventually you will build trust and that is when you can share your music. Most people dont get far because they are too busy thinking of themselves. Ask around in your church and see if there are any other writers willing to develop a songwriters guild or group. This is a great cell group format where thoughts and devotions can be shared along with new song ideas. What if it takes off and you have so many songs but no place to play them? Isnt that a great problem to have. One thing we did is organize a fund raiser concert where all our songwriters presented their music to a crowd of people supporting the food bank. There are many ways to make your group a win win situation. All you have to do is put others first and care about each other.Youll find that your group becomes family. We have. We are spending Christmas week together at a lodge!

know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Inside of me there is much more than unfinished symphonies. There are larger things than unknown works. Larger than unseen universes. Inside of me dwells the Spirit of the Almighty God. If that doesnt shake your core, you are quite possibly missing the reality of that scripture. Fellow artists, I want to release such a violently joyful scream right now. It would actually make those atomic ripples we always see in the movies. REJOICE! REJOICE! Again I say REJOICE! God is not far away. He is not disgusted by me. God wants to be so close and so accessible His Spirit dwells in me! Do you feel the joy of your salvation? There is God in heaven and He loves you! Hi, my name is Rich Irwin. Im a ministry leader at Anchorage City Church and these are encouraging words for Artists. God space. I like the word space. My mind thrills with all the meanings and possible varieties of the word, space. Do we mean the distance between this thing or that? Do we mean the large nonlife supporting gaps between the planets? Do we mean the physical area where all time and matter exist? Like I said, that word is far too big to leave alone smashing around in my fragile little brain. I really like these two words together....God Space. It is so big it calms me down. Really, every space is God space. Here is the thought that makes my spirit well up and my eyes water. I am God space. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not
