The Parish of Alderley comprises the Townships of Over In early times it Alderley, Nether Alderley and Great Warford. formed a part of the vast parish of Prestbury, to which it was
styled a " Parochial Chapelry " [and therefore probably a part and parcel of the Abbey of St. Werburgh in Chester], but no record

The Marriage registers for the period under review number Volume I. contains 133I parchment leaves, measuring 16 by 7
inches, bound in leather-covered boards. It records the Baptisms, " Marriages and Burials from 1629 to 1760, and " Banns of Marriage from 1754 to 1761. The volume requires rebinding, otherwise it is
in

good condition. From the commencement to the year 1732 the have been well recorded in Latin and only in a few peaces
is the ink at all faded. It will be noticed that during the Commonwealth a fair number of Civil Marriages is given, but there does not appear to be any note of the appointment of a " Register."

He died in June. 1776, and was buried at Alderley. His wife Charlotte was buried there 3 March, 177S. L. & C. Brazenose Register."

Note. This ancient chapelry, situated on the border Cheshire and Staffordshire, was, until about the middle of the
century, a part of the extensive parish of Prestbury. The registers do not commence, however, until

the year 172S, with the institution of the Rev. John [or Jonathan] Thornley to the He signs each page of the register to the year 1764 the curacy. year previous to his death. It is stated that until a vicarage could be
built for
Church tower. and Burials from 1728 to The volume consists of 7S 1788, and Marriages from 1729 to 1750. paper leaves, measuring 12J by 8 inches, enclosed in eather covered boards, and it requires rebinding. Apart from the usual entries this volume contains much miscellaneous information. Volume II. comprises 29 parchmerjt leaves. 13 of which are blank, enclosed in calf-covered boards. This register records the Baptisms and Burials from 1788 to 1812, and is headed: '-The Register of the Christenings and Burials at Bosley in the parish of Prestbury and County and Diocese of Chester, commencing January the thirteenth one thousand, seven hundred and eighty-eight." Records of Marriages of Bosley persons other than those given in the following pages must be looked for in the registers of Prestbury. The Chapel was and still is attached to Capesthorne Hall, and was made extra-parochial to the parish church of Prestbury. In 1855 Capesthorne was united to Siddington to form one ecclesiastical
parish.
The earliest register is a volume measuring 12.$ by 6 inches, containing 5S parchment leaves, 35 of which are unused, and 3 paper It records the Baptisms from 1722 to leaves, enclosed in calf-boards. Marriages from 1722 to 1747 and Burials from 1722 to 1S12. 1812 The entries in this and the next register refer for the most part to members of the ancient family of Davenport, by whom C?.pe ; thorne was formerly used as a private chapel belonging to the family.

" Earwaker " states that Marton Chapel was founded about the middle of 14th century by Sir John de Davenport, Kt., and is built of It so remains to this day, and the recumbent timber and plaster. figure of a knight in stone, supposed to represent the founder, still rests in the belfry.
In 1707 it is called a " parochial Chapel," and until the last century was a chapelry attached to and part of the vast parish of Prestbury, from which church it is situate about 6 miles distant. The Episcopal Registers at Chester return the Marton registers This is evidently an error, probably copied as commencing in 1584. from Gastrell's "Notitia Cestriensis," which gives the same date. The registers under review consist of two volumes. Volume I. contains 69 parchment leaves, measuring 13 by 7 inches, to which is attached one parchment cover. It is in a bad condition and many of One the entries are quite lost, owing to damp and course of time. bright spot in the register is during the incumbency of the Rev. Josiah Lightfoot, who was ejected as a Royalist in 1644. The entries during his time are very neatly made and are quite legible, and he The volume contains the signs his name at the foot of each page. Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1563 to 1725. II.
Poynton has
been favoured
in those early
times was connected with the
Abbot of St. Werburg in Chester. In the year 1312 the then Lord of Poynton brought an action against the Abbot to procure the advowson of the Chapel, in which case he lost, but the Abbot bound himself and his heirs lo find a chaplain at Poynton for ever. Owing to subsequent neglect to do this the tythes were sequestrated, and the Chapelry became attached to the parish church of Prestbury, some five miles distant, in which parish it remained until Its partition in
1871.
Notwithstanding
its
antiquity, there appear to
be no registers
extant befor the year 1723. From that time until 1795 the Christenings were well recorded, and the Marriages to 1753, in a book containing
65 parchment sheets, with six blank leaves at the beginning and the end of the volume, which measures 14 by 8 inches, and is bound in brown leather covers. The entries have been excellently made, but
the register requires rebinding. The next register contains the Christenings from 1S13 to 1S26.

Included in the Marriages under review will be found the records at the old Xorbury Chanel, as it was called, which was about one mile distant from Poynton. and four miles from the church of Stockport, to which it was attached; it has long since been demolished. from 1720, although at one time they went back, so it is stated, to an earlier period. Towards the end of l8tb century Siddington Chapel was broken into and the Communion plate, consisting of silver vessels, and other articles were stolon and carried away. The Church chest containing the above was found in a field close by. The early registers, so it is said, were burned.

small estates,
owned
takes its name from a combination of two Pott and Shrigley, which, in early times, were by families bearing these names. Bishop Gastrell, in his
Shrigley
i.e.,
" Notitia," states that " Pott Chapel
is situated within the Chapelry of Macclesfield," and until the last centuiy Pott formed a part of the vast parish of Prestbury, to which, of course, Macclesfield was
also attached.

The inhabitants in the wild district above Pott, known as the " Highlands of Cheshire," used the Mother Church for Weddings and Burials in preference to the Local Chapelries, and many of them do so to this day. The Church, dedicated to St. Christopher, was founded circa
1490, by Geoffrey Downes, who, by his will, left instructions that the priests appointed should keep " noe Horse, ne Hawke. ne Hound, ne nothing that should destroy or hinder him from the service of God, and if he will not tend his booke, ne writing, ne teaching of
children, ne his beades, ne other virtuus occupations,
will that
hee
be not there."
The earliest register is a thick volume containing 75 parchment leaves that measure 15J by 7| inches. The volume was bound or re-bound in vellum, with brass clasps and corners, at the expense of the Overseers in 1S97. Births and Christenings are recorded from 1619 to 1812, Marriages, 1685 to 1751, and Burials, 16S5 to 1S12. The
entries down to the year 1733 have evidently been transcribed from another book or books and are most legible. It is a matter for note that as against the small number of Marriages and Burials (about
200) there are something like 5,000 Christenings. A very small percentage of these relate to Pott Shrigley inhabitants, but refer to persons from such places as Adlington, Bollington, Kettleshulme, Lyme, Poynton, Rainow, Woodford, Worth and other villages, that might be searched for in vain in the records of the Mother Church
of Prestbury.
