Girls with Guitars etc, a cofee house evening of women,
music and song featuring 4 dynamic women playing their
own music in their own style.
Motes and Oats, who play fute and guitar and some-
times ukulele weaved with powerful vocal harmonies
characterize the jazz folk sound that unfolds when Mel-
issa McCready and Shannon Moldenhauer come togeth-
er. Tey meet near the shores of the Columbia River in
Castlegar to co-write songs inspired by their own lives.
Most recently you can fnd them in the recording studio
laying down some new tracks.
Evil Diane is musical duo Catherine McGrath and An-
neke Rosch. Te pair sing, harmonize and play a variety
of instruments including accordion, trumpet, trombone,
mandolin and guitar. Teir music includes originals and
traditional pieces taken from a variety of cultural back-
grounds. Catherine and Anneke also play together in
Heavy Shtetl, a klezmer swing group, Cattle Annie and the
Crooked Corral, a western swing group, and Oxygen Ork-
estar, a balkan brass ensemble.
Tis evening is a beneft for the Nelson and District
Womens Centre, a supportive place for women to relax,
get food plus a free clothing store, advocacy and resour-
ces for women and children. Come join us at John Ward

Want to improve the food production of your garden?
Looking for something new or unusual? Lardeau Valley
Seed Savers (LVSS) ofers 3 workshops to help you achieve
this goal. On the last Sunday of January, February and
March a speaker/workshop series will be held at the Lar-
deau Valley Hall in Meadow Creek. Tere is no cost for

Sunday, January 29 from 1 pm to 3 pm mycologist
Peter McAllister will present Enlivening your Relationship
with Mushrooms. Topics include using mycorrhizal fungi
to boost yields in the garden, how to harvest and cure
mushrooms to increase the vitamin D levels and how to
start, grow and harvest homegrown mushrooms indoors
and out using local natural materials.
Sunday, February 26 from 1 pm to 3:30 pm the developer
of Mycrobz Bacteria Solutions (Kaslo), Todd Veri, will share
Probiotics for your Garden. Understand how benefcial bac-
teria and yeast act as a fertilizer factory in the soil, protect
your plants, recycle all your organic waste, germinate seeds,
dispose of noxious weeds and seeds, and even save the bees.
A Seed Exchange will follow for you to obtain seeds
which the LVSS members have grown.
Sunday, March 25 from 12 pm to 4 pm - Befriending Bees
with entomologist Lynn Westcott. Learn why bees are our
champion pollinators, how to identify native bees, and
understand why we shouldnt be afraid of them. Take home a
list of the food-producing plants pollinated by bees through-
out the growing season. Build your own native bee nest and
learn how to provide pollinator-friendly yards and gardens.
Before this presentation a simple lunch will be provided
and a chance for informal garden chats. Preregistration
is required for lunch and for the nest building portion,
which is limited to 15 participants who will need to bring
some simple equipment. Tere is no need to preregister
for the presentation only, which will begin at 12:45 pm.

Lardeau Valley Seed Savers encourages seed saving as
one means of enhancing our local food/seed security by
establishing our own local seed bank. Gardening with your
own seeds, and continually reproducing them, excites the
most modest gardener. We meet monthly for an education-
al session and informal discussion. Everyone is welcome

Flourishing In Nelson
Tings fourish when they live in harmony with their
divine nature and in balance with their environment.
Flourish is a non-commercial gifing center where we
share our gifs freely in harmony with the natural laws of
love and unity. Te centre opened in November of 2011
under the guidance of Tamasine Drisdale, who has been
living extensively in the Amazon jungle with indigenous
tribes who have not forgotten how to be free beings on the
land. Inspired by the heart-centered, egoless practices of
these savages, Tamasine is ofering sacred dance classes,
exquisite hand-built pottery and pottery classes, exotic
textiles from Latin America and massage.
Flourish is also host to a circle of healers who wish to do ex-
changes on a gifing basis. We meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm
to share techniques and introduce new members to the group.
Sally Szeberenyi is at Flourish Fridays and Saturdays of-
fering Tarot Reading and sewing and mending services.
On Tursdays and Fridays, Flourish holds a community
raw food luncheon from noon to 2 pm. All are welcome to
bring organic raw foods to prepare and share in the true
spirit of healthy living.

Amnesty International Film Fest
On Friday, January 20 Kaslo will be hosting its 4th An-
nual Amnesty International Film Fest in conjunction with
the Kootenay Regional Amnesty Film Fest with the show-
ing of a very powerful flm.
Children of War (75 min) is a unique documentary
which follows a group of former child soldiers from
northern Uganda as they escape the battlefeld and reach
the sanctuary of a rehabilitation centre. Here they under-
go a remarkable process of trauma therapy and emotional
healing with the help of a remarkable group of trauma
counselors. Tis flm won the Best Feature Award at the
Los Angeles Film Festival and Te Justice Award at the
Berlin Cinema for Peace Festival.

Lily is a beautiful 3 year old female chocolate
brown pit-bull X.
Her original home wasnt able to provide for
her adequately, so she went into the care of a
relative. There she was able to gain weight and
confdence but unfortunately, she was too much
work for the owner as he had another dog.
We have found that Lily has an abundance
of energy and playfulness, which can be too
much for another dog to handle, so in our
opinion, Lily would do better in a home where
she is the only dog.

Years resolutions made, and spring is around the corner.
Before you know it, tax season will be here. Before you
start fling your taxes, here are 10 ways that may help you
reduce your tax bill and may even land you a refund.
For individuals
1. Plan ahead Make sure to gather your receipts and
NETFILE code, register for My Account, and sign up for
direct deposit before April 30. Submitting your income
tax and beneft return before the tax-fling deadline means
you can avoid having to pay late-fling penalties.
2. Tax-free savings account A tax-free savings account
(TFSA) is one great way to save money, since you dont pay
tax on any income you earn from investments in your TFSA.
3. Registered retirement savings plan Any income you
earn in a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) is ex-
empt from tax, as long as the funds stay in the plan. RRSPs
help you save for your retirement and get a break at tax
time too.
4. Public transit tax credit If you or someone in your
family is a regular user of public transit then you may be
able to claim a non-refundable tax credit based on the cost
of eligible transit passes.
5. Pension income splitting If you are receiving income
from a pension, you can split up to 50% of eligible pension
income with your spouse or common-law partner to reduce
the taxes you pay.
6. Students Are you still in school? Students can claim
the tuition, education, and textbook amounts. Have you
graduated recently? You may be eligible to claim the inter-
est you paid on your student loans.
7. Child care expenses For those who have children,
you may be able to claim child care expenses that you or
your spouse or common-law partner paid so that either of
you could work, do research, or go to school.
8. Home buyers tax credit If youre a frst-time home
buyer you may be eligible to claim $5000 on the purchase
of your new home, which can save you up to $750.
For people who are self-employed
9. Hiring an apprentice Did your business employ an
apprentice? A salary paid to an employee registered in a
prescribed trade in the frst two years of his or her appren-
ticeship contract qualifes for a non-refundable tax credit
for the employer.
10. Creating child care spaces Did your business
(which is not mainly a child care services business) create
licensed child care spaces for the children of your employ-
ees? If so, you may be eligible for an investment tax credit
for the child care spaces you created.

Te 16th of this past December, the sale of the Anglican
Church Hall, where the AFKO of ce is located, was fnal-
ized. Teresa Hart, owner of Cottonwood Falls Animal
Clinic in Nelson, is the new building owner.

Amnesty International Film Fest
Hope for the future begins at home, where the big
screen ofers the big picture on Tursday, January 19 at
Castlegars Amnesty International Film Festival, this year
again the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College. As you
likely know, Amnesty International is an independent
organization that works to protect human rights around
the world through education and advocacy. Te annual
flm festival is one way to reach out and engage, educate,
and inspire, the better to foster understanding of human
rights issues. Te two flms to be shown are:
At 7:00 pm the Danish/German flm Blood in the Mobile
comes close to home indeed. Most of us dont know that
the ubiquitous presence of cell phones in our society is
contributing to violence in the Democratic Republic of
Congo, where the worlds thirst for the mineral cassiterite
creates an industry rife with corruption, violence, and hu-
man exploitation. Danish director Frank Piasecki Poulsen
takes what he fnds to the mobile phone giant Nokia.
At 8:45 pm the flm Cultures of Resistance asks whether
music and dance be the weapons of peace? Director Iara
Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world
embroiled in confict. She found hope for the future in
graf ti artists fghting government oppression in Iran,
musicians reaching out to slum kids in Brazil, hip-hop
artists saying their piece in Palestine and other examples
of art in the name of peace and justice.
