The first Wounded Warriors in Action (WWIA) fundraiser banquet and raffle has been slated Sunday, Feb. 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Holiday Lodge in Phelps. The buffet will include a ham or turkey dinner. The event has been coordinated by Lyle Scott and Karen Spurgeon and Robin and Debbie Vold, all of Phelps. All proceeds will go to provide six Purple Heart recipients an all-expense-paid twoday and three-night fishing event with local Phelps fishing guides. Sunrise Lodge on West Shore Drive will provide lodging and food at a reduced rate for the six veterans. The WWIA Foundation was established by John McDaniel in 2007, who set up corporate headquarters in Apollo Beach, Fla. A retired Army officer, he felt that his service to the American nation was not yet finished. WWIA assists more than 100 Purple Heart veterans with recovery by providing various outdoor sporting opportunities at no cost, such as hunting elk in Washington state, hunting pheasant in South Dakota and wreck fishing off the coast of New Jersey. Spurgeon is an associate of WWIA and a Purple Heart recipient.

Banquet to benefit Purple Heart vets

On Oct. 1, 2009, during deployment to Afghanistan, I was severely wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade. Although my wife and family have been the main focus for my recovery, hunting and fishing have been my therapy, he explained. My love of the outdoors has helped to get me back to what is now a normal life. On that same night of Oct. 1, Sgt. Ryan Adams made the greatest sacrifice. Sgt. Adams gave his life so that others could continue to enjoy these things, he continued. It is my hope that through the WWIA I will have the opportunity to pass on what little knowledge of hunting and fishing I have and hopefully help fellow wounded warriors back to a normal life. An account has been set up for WWIA at First National Bank in Phelps for anyone who is unable to attend. Organizers will accept items for raffle prizes. To donate, contact Spurgeon at (715) 8918161 or scott@wwiaf.org. Banquet tickets are $30 each or $50 for a couple. Only 150 dinner tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets can be purchased at Holiday Lodge and First National Bank in Phelps and The Tackle Box in Land O Lakes or by contacting Spurgeon.

Nicolets Learning in Retirement to launch winter/spring session

The Nicolet College Learning in Retirement (LIR) program will launch its 2012 winter/spring session with more than 40 different just-for-thefun-of-it learning opportunities. Upcoming topics will include moviemaking in Wisconsin, Hurricane Katrina, astronomy, nature study, cinema, geology, opera, poetry, literature and art. Outdoor activities will include snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, canoeing and kayaking, and a spring wildflower hike. Any of these offerings is a great way for active retirees to learn new things and meet new people, said Nancy Brissee, Nicolet LIR community representative. The whole point is to have fun and stay active, and every class offers the opportunity to do exactly that. Classes will be held throughout the North Woods in Eagle River, Three Lakes, Sugar Camp, Rhinelander, Minocqua, Woodruff, Crandon and Irma. Some classes will meet once, while others will be held once a week over the course of months. About 300 North Woods retirees belong to the organization. An annual LIR membership is $35. Members can take as many or as few classes as they desire. There are no tests or grades in any class. For more information or a complete class list, contact the LIR office at (715) 365-4491 or 1-(800) 544-3039, ext. 4491, or visit nicoletcollege.edu.

The noon whistle

As I drove home from a nearby town today, the noon whistle blew. No one stopped. There was no visible acknowledgement. It made me wonder what would happen many years ago when the noon whistle blew. So I ventured into the world of the Internet and found out that the whistle is usually found in factory and mill towns. I always thought it existed to let the factory workers know that it was time to break for lunch. But according to Suzanne Beechers (dearreader.typepad.com) research, Bells used to ring in small-town city halls every day at noon because people didnt have electric clocks, so when they heard the bells ringing, theyd pull out their pocket watches to wind them, and all of the housewives would get out their keys so they could wind their mantel clocks. It was the only way to keep everyone on the same time. Now when that whistle blows in our town, I initially wonder where the fire, is since what was a whistle or a bell is now a fire siren. Then I realize it is just the noon whistle. In the last town this is the fourth small town I have lived in our dog and all the dogs in town would lift their heads and howl when the siren went off. But most mills and factories are gone. No longer do we need to remind workers to stop for lunch. Many do not take the time to eat. No longer do we need a bell To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 5B

Some of us dream of having artistic talent. Others, like Linda Woiak, have that innate ability and use it to better their communities. As a child, Woiak spent most summers in Three Lakes. She later earned an associate degree in art and spent years roaming the United States, yet, in keeping true to her roots, returned to the area of her childhood. She opened Lindys Interior Painting, applying faux plaster and wallpapers, and paints freehand. She exhibits her talent with pottery and weaving when she has the time. Woiak served as the childrens librarian at Demmer Library in Three Lakes, on the Artarama Committee in Eagle River for 15 years, and is presently on the board of directors for the Reiter Center in Three Lakes. Using her artistic background, Woiak helped design the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in the Northwoods. When a group of forwardTo ARTIST, Pg. 5B

HOW WAS YOUR FIRST WEEK OF WORKOUTS?

John Schuh Phelps After the first week of workouts, I didnt realize how physical it would be and how out of shape I am. My body is not used to doing these movements. I found after a few days I feel like I have more energy and I am now looking forward to going to the gym after work.

My goal this week is to keep up with the trainers and change I cant to I can.

Margaret Rainer Three Lakes

The group workouts were tough, especially Thursday. I have decided to work out the other days at the gym or at home to build up endurance.

Tabitha Avery Eagle River

First week went well, few sore muscles, but thats what its all about. Learning some real good exercises and stretch routines I can do at home. Making some real good friends and looking forward to the new me! I know its the first week, but I know I will have this same positive attitude in the 12th week.

My first week of workouts was really good. I was sore for sure, but the burn just shows that I am working hard to get to my true goal. I love the different stretches and workouts; mixing it up keeps my mind and body going. I cant wait to start seeing the results because I am already feeling them after the first week!

The workouts are challenging. I cant remember the last time I exerted this much energy.

Baby steps. When beginning a new exercise regimen, its important to start slowly and listen to your body. Understand the difference between being sore from working out and pain from injury. The soreness felt in the beginning is much worse than itll ever be as we progress. So the worst is behind us! Right now, we are training to train, which means we are teaching our body how to do the movements that later on we will be doing with much more intensity. When first starting, notice a challenge to your balance and general awkwardness in movement. Later, youll see your stability improve and its exciting to see the change so quickly! I look forward to rockin out some killer workouts once we get beyond the initial phase! Julia John

Dr. Oz says the average number of times we fib about our eating habits per year is more than 370. I just had a small slice of cake. That means we lie to ourselves every single day and more. Keep an honest food diary. Tally up your true calorie intake no one has to know, just do it for yourself and tally up your estimated caloric expenditure. Its simple math. Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital donates ambulance to Nicolet College

Students in Nicolet Colleges emergency medical services (EMS) classes will get a real-world learning experience due to the recent donation of an ambulance to the college by Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital (MERMH). The ambulance will create a more realistic learning environment for our students, said Jason Goeldner, Nicolet College director of Protective Services. Having an ambulance on campus will create more opportunities for students to learn in a real-world setting, including when the ambulance is traveling down the road. Nicolet College instructors will use the ambulance to train future paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The donation of the ambulance is a great way to give back to Nicolet and the community, said Jeff Freese, EMS manager for Ministry Howard Young Health Care. A large majority of our EMS staff has received training from Nicolet, whether its the basic EMT, or the paramedic courses. A lot of the students who come from the Nicolet programs are employed locally, whether its at Ministry Health Care or a local fire department, added Goeldner. We also provide refresher training for those same organizations so current health-care employees will benefit from the donation as well, he added. Instructors said that its one thing to learn a skill in a spacious classroom and another to practice it in the limited space thats available in an ambulance. In the past, this type of training had to be coordinated with local ambulance services. Its a great piece of equipment because our students will be able to get in the back of an ambulance and run a call as they would in the real world, said Liz Reischel, Nicolet College emergency medical training instructor and coordinator. According to Freese, the donation could benefit Ministry Health Care in the future as well. Adding the ambulance from MERMH is going to give the students a sense of realism. Its a win-win situation for Ministry Health Care to provide the vehicle and, down the line, that student may be one of our well-trained employees, said Freese. Goeldner added that the ambulance is a great addition to the existing fleet of Protective Services training vehicles at the college, which includes a police squad car and a pumper fire truck. The donated ambulance was recently replaced and removed from service by the hospital.

Rhinelander native to perform at Nicolet

Local talent Mary Lee Cox will give a concert Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Nicolet Area Technical College Theatre in Rhinelander. An Evening With Mary Lee and Friends will showcase singer-songwriter Cox, who will perform songs from her new compact disc, My Life, as well as favorites by artists Joni Mitchell, the Rolling Stones and Bette Midler. Coxs own music is written in a country-folk style influenced by artists such as Joan Baez, John Denver and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Each song tells a personal story. Everybody Knows But Me is about love gone wrong and Mothers Song is a ballad about mother-daughter love. Titles such as Material Illusions, An Old Toy, and This Is My House convey a canvas of heartbreak, yearning, loss and love, according to Cox A self-taught musician who accompanies herself on the guitar and piano, Cox performed several times at Hodag Country Fest, at the Oneida County Fair and other local venues. She sings and plays guitar every Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church in Rhinelander. While she has lived elsewhere, including Ireland and Chicago, Ill., I always come back to Rhinelander, she said, my hometown, where Ive been performing off and on for 40 years. Guitarists Larry Wiesneske and Paul Ehlers, and prodigy guitarist Eva Senter will share the stage with Cox. Wiesneske, a local attorney, is Coxs brother. Weve been harmonizing together since we were kids, Cox said. Ehlers, an instructor at Nicolet College, likewise has been playing with the Wiesneske duo for 40-some years. Wiesneske and Ehlers are members of The Usual Suspects, a blues band featured regularly in area nightclubs and festivals. Senter, age 12, has been giving guitar performances for three years, including every summer at the Three Lakes Arts Center. Eva does an utterly amazing Star-Spangled Banner, said Cox. And she loves rock n roll. Right now shes studying to be a bass player. Mary Lee and Friends is part of our An Evening With series that celebrates local artists, explained Nicolet theatre director Jim Nuttall. Our homegrown talent is special. Its uniquely North Woods. Were hoping for a good turnout in support of these fine musicians, he said. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance at nicoletlive.com, or by calling the box office at (715) 365-4646.

WEDDING

LIFESTYLE An Afternoon of Song captivates audience

For her third annual Christmas Concert An Afternoon of Song, vocalist Dr. Pamalyn Lee chose an intimate repertoire of captivating music that appealed to all ages. Sponsored by the Outreach Committee of Ely Memorial United Church of Christ in Land O Lakes and Land O Lakes Area Artisans Inc., the the difficult piano accompaniment, which made the piece sound simultaneously humorous and operatic. Lee hammed it up and the audience loved it. Two late Italian Renaissance selections followed, where Lee was able to demonstrate her fine ability to portray music in other languages. Guilio Caccinis Amarilli mia bella (Amaryllis, my lovely one) was sung from the heart, the beautiful lyrics accompanied by a finely romanticized piano. Claudio Monteverdis haunting melody Lasciate me morire (Let me die) was sung with great passion, revealing the singers agony as she is left alone on an island. In both depictions, Lee expressed great dynamics. In the next three works by Spanish composer Enrico Granados, the vocalist teased the audience with her body language. From El majo timido (The Timid Man), a playful Lee made fun of a young romantic, too timid to approach the singer at her window. She then passionately sang the melancholy El mirar de la maja (The Eyes of the Beloved) against a complement of beats that kept the music moving. After a heartwarming rendering of the childrens beloved Jesus Loves Me, Lee sang a song of praise: He Looked Beyond My Fault (Arr. Elmo Mercer). This tender, interpretation was sung from the heart, and led to a fervent rendition of the all-time favorite How Great Thou Art (S.K. Hine), which began lyrically and built to a powerful presentation in the final stanza. Lee chose several lesserknown selections for the remainder of her concert. Craig Courtneys In the Bleak Midwinter set the atmosphere of the snowy season with Ribbens quiet, tinkling accompaniment and with the wintry lyrics and Lees rich soprano voice. This led to a haunting portrayal of the Canadian Huron Carol (J. Gallina) in which Lee captured, with deep feeling, the tonality and beauty of the Native American community. In addition, D.N. Johnsons Down From His Glory, was performed with powerful dynamics to the Neapolitan tune of O Solo Mio (Eduardo di Capua). Lee also sang to children of all ages. Ribbens accompanied the soprano to a moving version of J.R. Murrays beloved Christmas carol Away in a Manger. Lees concluding selections were begun in German with Philip Ledgers melodic version of Still, Still, Still. Her German was precise, bringing the sensation of warmth to this Salisbury Melody. Finally, a slow, meditative lullaby of Franz Grubers Silent Night was the quintessential selection for the evening. Once again, Lee and Ribbens gave a captivating musical performance. The afternoon was meditative, yet full of enjoyment. Barbara Wilkinson, formerly of Wheaton, Ill., taught literature at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill. selections consisted both of beloved holiday carols and of lesser-known classical pieces that Lee maintains are a little bit of everything that I like. Accompanied by exceptional pianist Harriet Ribbens, Lee held the audience spellbound throughout the afternoon with her rich, controlled soprano voice. Opening with a delightful parody of V.H. Hutchinsons nursery rhyme Old Mother Hubbard, the talented soloist charmed her audience into wanting more. Ribbens skillfully attacked

Weve had between 24 to 68 children, not including parents and grandparents, who take part in our childrens programs each time. When I walk into someones home who has hired me to paint, and there sits a stepping stone or inside hangs a birdhouse weve painted in the childrens classes, its so rewarding, she mused. Woiak appreciates visitors who walk through the art centers door and get excited about what has been done. They love that we are local. They walk into the theater and marvel at the foresight and changes, she said. Performers appreciate the nostalgia. Though she admits that her skills often involve simply a large toolbox and a ladder, Woiak is thankful that many others have brought their skills to the formation of such a facility. Many guardian angels are watching over the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in the Northwoods, she proclaimed.

looking people put their heads together in 2003, we had dreams, she said. We wanted a gallery in which local artists could display their work, a theater for live performances and movies, a dance floor and a concession stand. We want this place to be new but nostalgic. Cy Williams designed the original theater which began as a World War II Quonset hut. In 2008, many people who had the original dream for an arts center helped in remodeling the interior of the historic downtown Three Lakes building. It was fate that we all came together, she recalled. The center is donation dependent, so everything must be prioritized, according to Woiak. She is part of the building committee, has contributed as secretary, treasurer, vice president and now president of the center, and applies her experience with art and working with children as the childrens programming director.

or siren to tell us the time as clocks surround us on our wrists, cell phones, laptops, dashboards and more. So why do small towns still sound a noon whistle? Perhaps it is just nostalgia, I thought, a reminder of days gone by. Little did I know that my guess was right on. As I roamed around the Internet, I learned that many small towns still have a noon whistle and it is purely nostalgia. In one town, a resident complained about the noise since he lived across the street from the fire department. So the town silenced the whistle until other townies complained and it was reinstated. The complaining resident moved. I like the thought that the whistle is sounded because of nostalgia. We seem to move so fast these days and I wonder how many traditions we really hold on to. Many no longer send Christmas cards, write

handwritten notes or welcome a new neighbor with a pie. So many of these special traditions are either being lost or have been long forgotten. The real Christmas tree was replaced with first metal and now plastic trees in many homes. The large colorful bulbs on those trees are now LEDs that last many lifetimes and save energy. I like traditions and, when the towns noon siren goes off, I usually pause for a moment and just enjoy it. I also enjoy the sound of the train whistle as it blows at all five intersections in town. Traditions? Meaningless? No way! Mary Friedel-Hunt, MA LCWS, is a freelance writer and psychotherapist in the Madison area. She can be reached at mfriedelhunt@charter.net or P.O. NorthStar earns quality award

NorthStar Health System has received the Michigan Center for Rural Healths 2011 Michigan Rural Health Quality Improvement Award for Quality Improvement Achievement. The award acknowledges quality improvement efforts in inpatient clinical performance in the care and treatment of heart failure and pneumonia, outpatient clinical performance in the care and treatment of chest pain and acute myocardial infarction, and improving care related to emergency department transfers. This is the third year the Michigan Center for Rural Health has offered this award. This select group of award recipients has shown exceptional commitment to providing their patients with highquality health care, said John Barnas, executive director of the Michigan Center for Rural Health. NorthStar is committed to the tenets of quality improvement that embrace evidencebased medicine to improve health outcomes, said Deb Han, RN, director of quality/risk management. Clinical indicators for the award in inpatient and outpatient clinical performance were based on the Appropriate Care Measure, a composite score of 85% to 94% that captures whether or not a patient received all the care that he or she was eligible to receive. The Quality Improvement Achievement Award in emergency department transfer performance is based on an emergency department transfer score of 90% to 97%. NorthStar was honored at an awards ceremony during the 12th annual Michigan Critical Access Hospital Conference last October in Gaylord, Mich.

A chili supper sponsored by the Community United Church of Christ Womens Guild will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, located at 1315 Highway 155 in St. Germain. School to start STEP program

Phelps Elementary School students will be among more than 5,500 students in 250 classrooms statewide who will learn to prepare for disasters and react to emergencies thanks to a program called Student Tools for Emergency Planning (STEP). The students involved in the STEP program will gain very important and potentially life-saving knowledge, said Tod Pritchard, Wisconsin Emergency Preparedness coordinator. Students then take that knowledge home and share it with family and friends, making their communities better prepared for an emergency. The program is a turnkey classroom curriculum for teachers to prepare fifthgrade students for various emergencies including tornadoes, flooding and storms. It also shows students how to put together an emergency kit and develop an emergency plan with their families. Teachers signed up for the program this past fall and are JANET GARLING (715) 479-9265 required to teach the STEP curriculum before the end of the 2011-12 school year. The STEP program provides teachers with materials at no cost to the schools. This includes instructor guides, copies of student handouts and starter emergency kits students can take home, according to Pritchard. The basic lesson is one hour of instruction, but teachers can expand the lessons to cover eight hours of materials, he said. Last year, Wisconsin became the first state in the Midwest to teach the STEP program, which is sponsored by Wisconsin Emergency Management; the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction; Office of Justice Assistance; Center for School, Youth, and Citizen Preparedness; and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The ReadyWisconsin website at readywisconsin.wi.gov also has a video of STEP being taught at two different Wisconsin schools. For more information, contact Pritchard at (608) 2423324 or tod.pritchard@wisconsin.gov.

Red Solo Pub Walk raises funds for trails

Organizers Anita Kendall and Cher Boers recently held a Red Solo Cup Pub Walk based on the Toby Keith song Red Solo Cup, raising a total of $500 for Three Lakes Trails Inc. to help maintain the snowmobile trails in the Three Lakes area. A group of women each donated $10 to participate in the walk. In return, they received a red Solo Cup Co. cup with their name written on it. The women began the walk at Terlizzis Loon Saloon where a light brunch was offered and proceeded to walk from tavern to tavern. The group raised additional money by playing games involving the cups. At each stop, patrons of the establishments had the opportunity to donate and join in the games. We wanted to have some fun walking with the hopes of raising money to help the community, said Kendall. Both Kendall and Boers said the donations were appreciated and that plans were under way to have the event again next year. Taverns participating in the walk included Terlizzis Loon Saloon, Crowleys Irish Waters, American Legion Bar, Oneida Village Inn, Black Forest Pub & Grill and Bonnies Lakeside.

Genealogical society plans meeting at Demmer Library

The Three Lakes Genealogical Society will hold a meeting Monday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. in the lower level of the Demmer Library in Three Lakes. The program presentation will be titled Family Search: The New Ordering System. The Demmer Library is an authorized Family Search affiliate, meaning that local genealogists can order Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints microfilms and have them sent to the Demmer Library for their use. Ordering was previously done at the library, but now with Family Searchs online ordering, genealogists can order and track their orders directly from the Family Search website. This program will discuss setting up an account and will show the steps required for ordering films. All family history enthusiasts are welcome to join the Three Lakes Genealogical Society. The society meets the fourth Monday of each month at Demmer Library. A society member is available one-half hour before each meeting begins to assist anyone with genealogy questions. For more information, call Debby at (715) 546-2757.

ST. GERMAIN/SAYNER
St. Germain Town Board members met in closed session before its monthly meeting Monday, Jan. 9, to discuss final details agreed upon with Margo Rogers-Anderson, who was hired by the board as the new golf pro for the St. Germain Golf Course. The regular meeting had been rescheduled from 6 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Two citizens, Patricia Falkenstern and Gary Peske, a candidate for county supervisor, voiced their concerns that the change of meeting time was an inconvenience to the citizens of the town. Town Chairman Walt Camp and Supervisor John Vojta indicated that their membership on the St. Germain Volunteer Fire Department and its training schedule had interfered with meeting times in the past. Camp addressed the concern: We are going to bring bylaw changes on behalf of the fire department to the town board to allow for a different training schedule. This will also allow volunteer firefighters the opportunity to attend the town board meetings. I want to make the town board meetings more accessible. The snowmobile route issue was discussed. The goals are to secure a new safe route, still make use of the bridge across Lost Creek and alleviate snowmobile traffic on Big St. Germain Drive. No construction, cutting of trees or clearing will take place until all options have been explored, said Camp. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is currently conducting a speed study along a section of Highway 155 which is marked with a suggested safe speed of 45 miles per hour. If the study warrants, the speed limit will be changed to an enforceable speed of 45 miles per hour. The towns yard-waste site may be duplicated on the current garbage transfer site. Waste accumulated at the present site needs to be given time

to turn itself into usable mulch. Changes in building permit fees also are under consideration by the board. The town is not looking at the increase in fees as a way of generating revenue, just making sure the taxpayers are not

footing the bill. The proposed 61% increase achieves this goal, said Vojta, chairman of planning and zoning. Carol Radtke reported on behalf of the St. Germain PrimeTimers regarding The Snowflake Dance.

Church begins The Story series

The Story, a series that looks at the Bible as one continuous story, has recently begun at St. Germain Evangelical Free Church in St. Germain. The Rev. Josh Reese will take the congregation through the entire story of the Bible in 31 sessions to be held Saturdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m. at the church, located at 6065 Highway 70 E. in St. Germain. This is an opportunity for our community to journey through the Bible together. There can be no greater investment on our part than to study Gods word as it shows how deeply God loves us and wants to be in a personal relationship with us, said Reese. Each session is self-contained enough so that visitors can join the journey at any time. The Wednesday night adult study that meets at 6:15 p.m. and small group discussions will incorporate companion material and information as well. Childrens ministries also will use The Story curriculum during their time together. For more information, contact the church at (715) 4792173.
