SECTION 1 Working Principle of Ice-making

Main process for the ice maker include adding water, ice-producing, ice harvest etc. When the unit is started, first step is the working of the synchronous motor to move the ice case to the level position, then the water pump will start to pour water into the ice case. And after the ice case is full of the water, the compressor start to run. The compressor absorb the low pressure gas state refrigerant from the evaporator and compress it. After the compressing, the refrigerant get the more high pressure and more high temperature, then out of compressor and enter the condenser. The heat of the refrigerant dissipate through the condenser and the refrigerant itself change to be liquid state. The liquid refrigerant go through the drier filter, then enter the capillary. In the slim and long capillary, the pressure of the refrigerant decrease and the refrigerant change to the liquid completely, then go inside the evaporator again. The refrigerant in the evaporator absorb the heat around the surround and change to the gas, the temperature decrease and the refrigerant go into the compressor and to be compressed. The refrigerant cycles in the cooling system round and round like so, absorb the heat of the water in the ice case continuously, till once ice making process complete. Then the synchronous motor rotate to the vertical position to enter ice harvest process. Then the solenoid valve open, the refrigerant out of the compressor enter the evaporator directly through the solenoid valve, the heat of the high temperature and high pressure will be absorbed by the evaporator, make the temperature of the evaporator increase. Then the ice cube on the surface of the evaporator will melt quickly, and fall down, then the ice harvest process complete. Then the unit enter the new ice making process. The following two diagrams show the refrigerant flowing in the cooling system.

And the unit will stop running. ADD WATER Indicator for no water: When this light is on, means that there is no water in the unit. If you want more ice cube, add the water to the water tank of the unit. SELECT buttonUse this button to select the size of the ice cube. You should select the appropriate size according to the room temperature. Power button: Use to start or stop the unit. Note: Because of the different room temperature, for the same selected size of the ice cube, the actual size of ice cube maybe is different.

Description of ice making process

After you plug on the unit, and pour the water into the water tank of the unit, then press Power button to start the unit. If you want to select the size of the ice cube, the press the Select button. After pressing the Power button, the ice case will rotate upward, empty the water out. After 20 seconds, the ice case will rotate downward again and be level position. Then water pump start to work for about 50 seconds to fill the water into the ice case. After 50 seconds, the water pump stop working and compressor start to work at once to enter ice making process. After 6 min(for

small size of ice cube), 9 min(for medium size) or 12 min (for large size ), one ice making process is completed. After this, the ice case will rotate upward, empty the surplus water, at same time, the ice harvest solenoid start to work, it will work for about 20 seconds. Then ice harvest process finish, the ice harvest solenoid stop working. And ice case start to rotate downward again, at same time, ice shovel moves to push ice cube to the ice basket. The ice case is at level position again and start to pour the water again. The second ice making process start again. During these process, the compressor will always work and not stop.

Operation Procedure
1. Open the cover, remove the ice basket and pour water into tank. Keep water level below the level mark. 2. Press Power on the control panel to begin the ice making cycle. 3. Select the size of the ice cube by pressing the Select button. If the room temperature is lower than 60, it is recommended to select the small or medium ice sign button in order to avoid ice cube sticking together. 4. The ice making cycle lasts about 7 to 13 minutes, depending on the size of the ice cube selection. 5. While the ice maker is on, verify water level periodically. If water pump cant inject water, the ice maker will stop automatically, and the Water indicator will be on. Press Power button, fill water up to the level mark and press Power again. Allow the refrigerant liquid inside the compressor at least 3 minutes to settle before restarting. 6. The ice maker automatically stops working when the ice basket is full. 7. Change water in the water reservoir every 24 hours to ensure a reasonable hygiene level. If unit isnt in use, drain all water left in the water tank

E. The main parts of the ice-maker

I. Evaporator

II.

This is the main parts to make the ice cube. And during the ice-making process, it is the low pressure component; during the ice-harvest process, it is the high pressure component. It is very important that the evaporator must be installed level, otherwise the produced ice cube will be different size, and if more severely, it will obstruct the ice case and the unit will not work. Condenser

The condenser is a high pressure component, it transfers heat power of high pressure, high temperature refrigerant gas coming from compressor to air around it through its outer wall and wing plate. In our ice-maker, it is cooled by the fan. III. Compressor

This compressor belongs to piston type. Compressor is the heart of A/C refrigeration system. Flow or circulation of refrigeration for this system is depending on running of compressor. Model No.: OF789D AZ1335Y-1 for 115V/60Hz

OF1033A for 220~240V/50Hz The motor of the compressor is the PTC starting single phase asynchronous motor with external overload thermal protector. The following diagram shows the electrical connecting way for the compressor:

2 3

PTC Startor

Power Supply

Comp C

Overload Protector

IV.

To check the compressor is good or breakdown, remove the PTC startor and overload thermal protector, use the multi-function meter or resistance meter to measure the the resistant of main coil (between M terminal and C terminal) and secondary coil(between S terminal and C terminal), if the resistance is zero or infinite, then the compressor is breakdown. Normal the resistance is about several hundred or ten ohms. And at the normal temperature, the overload protector is not open and the resistance of the PTC startor is several ohms. Fan Motor for condenser

V.

VI.

This type of the motor of the fan is synchronous motor impedance protected. Model No.: SP100A, P/N: 1123XSL for 110-120Vac/60Hz SP100A, P/N:2123XSL for 220-240Vac/50Hz Pressure Switch (Optional) This is the low pressure protection switch. When the pressure in the cooling system is high than 1.25Mpa, the it will close and the fan motor will start to work to dissipate the heat inside the condenser. And the pressure lows down with the fan working, this low pressure switch will open again. Motor for ice shovel rotation

VII. VIII.

This also is the synchronous type motor with impedance protected. The speed is about 3.5RPM for 50Hz power and 4.1RPM for 60Hz. This motor is to move and rotate the ice case, so the torque is very important. Solenoid Valve It is very simple, you can measure the resistance of the coil to check it is ok or not. Water pump

IX.

Refrigerant Filter

This filter is located between the condenser and capillary. Its main function is to eliminate the dust and humid in the cooling system. Purpose is to avoid obstructing of capillary and maintain the good cooling result. X. Transformer Transformer used in this unit belongs to class 2 transformer or isolation transformer, and is thermal fuse protected. Model: JPT44-77 for 115V,60Hz, Primary:110-120Vac, Secondary:10.5V,350mA WJ-41105300A1 for 220-240V/50Hz,60Hz, Primary:220-240V, Secondary:10.5V,350mA

F. Control for the ice-maker

I. Ice-making control When selected for the size of the ice cube, each ice-making time is controlled by the microcomputer of the main controller and is invariable. So if the room temperature is different, for the same selected size of the ice cube, the actual size maybe is different. Water Control When the water pump start to work, after 3 seconds, if the stainless steel tube and stainless piece on the water out mouth underneath the top cover cant remain be shorted for 3 seconds, then the main controller will confirm that there is not enough water in the water tank to make the ice again. And the add water indicator on the front panel will lit on. And on the contrary, if the stainless steel tube and stainless piece on the water out mouth underneath the top cover always be shorted, and actually there is no enough water on the water tank, so it will not tell there is no water. And the unit will work continuously but cant produce the ice. Ice-cube full control To detect the ice is full or not in the ice basket, the main controller will detect the temperature of the sensor on the up edge of the ice basket. If the temperature attain below or equal about 4.5 centigrade, means the ice basket is full of the ice cube. And the unit will stop working and the indicator of ice full on the operation panel will lit on. If the temperature is rising again, the unit will start again automatically and the indicator of the ice full will be off. Fan control The fan is controlled by the pressure protection switch. If the pressure of the cooling system is above 1.25Mpa, then the fan will start to work. And if the pressure of the cooling system is down and lower than 0.8Mpa, the fan will stop at once. This is to keep the condenser cool and maintain the ice making effect. Note: In future will use another sensor to control the fan motor. The sensor is put on the condenser. If the temperature of the sensor is higher than 35 centigrade, the fan will start to work. And if the temperature of sensor of low again and is lower than 32 centigrade, the fan will stop at once. Compressor Control During the ice-making and ice-harvest process, the compressor will always run and not stop. When there is no water in the water tank and the ice basket is full of the ice cube, the whole unit will stop working and the compressor also stop running. If the compressor want to restart again, it must be after 3 minutes of the compressor stop.

SECTION 4. MAINTENANCE
A. Important Safety
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons or property. Read all instructions before using any appliance. Do not operate this or any other appliance with a damaged cord. Connect to properly polarized outlets only. No other appliance should be plugged into the same outlet. Be sure that the plug is fully inserted into the receptacle. Do not run cord over carpeting or other heat insulators. Do not cover the cord. Keep cord away from traffic areas, and do not submerge in water. We do not recommend the use of an extension cord, as it may overheat and become a risk of

fire. If you must use an extension cord, use No.14 AWG minimum size and rated no less than 1875 watts. Unplug the ice maker before cleaning or making repairs. Exercise caution and use reasonable supervision when appliance is used near children. Do not clean your ice maker with flammable fluids. The fumes can create a fire hazard or explosion. Do not tip over. If the ice maker is brought in from outside in wintertime, give it a few hours to warm up to room temperature before plugging it in.

B. How to open the unit

1). Remove the back panel first

Unscrew the screw on the bottom and back of the back panel of the unit, then slide the back panel down. 2). Remove the right and left side panel

Unscrew the screw on the bottom of these two sides panel, then slide it down. After you remove the back panel and side panel, you can see the compressor, pressure protection switch, condenser fan, solenoid valve, micro switch, synchronous motor for rotation of ice case, condenser, drier filter, and control box. 3). Remove the cover of the mail control box.

These figure shows the cover is removed. After removing the cover of the main control box, you can check the main control is working good or not. You can measure the output of each electrical parts. If the main controls output is normal, then the problem is at the electrical parts itself. 4). Remove the top cover Unscrew the underneath screw of right and left side of the top cover.

After removing the top cover, you can check the water detecting parts, the stainless steel tube and stainless piece on the water out showed in above right figure is ok or not.

C. Some point should be checked when maintenance

1) Check the water filter in bottom of the water tank for one or two month. If your water is not so very clean or something is left in the water tank, then the water filter will be obstructed and the unit will not work normally. 2) The drain cap should be tightened. If the drain cap on the left side of the unit is not tightened completely, it will cause the water leakage. And if the water leakage produce, you should check each of the connecting point of water flowing way. 3) The micro switch should be installed correctly. It is very important that one should be exact horizontal and another should be exact vertical. These two micro switch is used to detect the position of the ice case. 4) When cleaning, you should not touch the sensor on the top edge of the ice basket. It is used to detect if the ice basket is full of the ice cube or not. So make sure not to touch and move it. Otherwise the unit will not work normally. 5) Leave enough space on the two sides and the back of the unit. Keep airflow free. And there is no obstruct substance block the air inlet and outlet of the unit.

D. Checking the cooling system

1).After long time using, make sure the surface of the condenser clean. 2).There is no refrigerant leakage in the cooling system.

SECTION 5. Troubleshooting
A. Normal Example

PROBLEM Water indicator is on. Ice indicator is on. Water and Ice indicator are both flash.

POSSIBLE CAUSE Lack of Water. There is too much ice. Ice shovel can not move.

SOLUTION Stop the ice maker, fill water, and then restart it. Remove ice from ice basket. Check if the ice is blocking the ice shovel, otherwise, consult a certified technician. Stop the ice maker, and restart it when the ice blocks melt. Select the small ice button. Change the water in the inner Tank. Temperature of water is better set between 45-90 . Please run the ice maker below 90 and pour colder water into tank. Verify by a qualified technician. Verify by a qualified technician.

The ice cycle is too long. Ice cubes stick together. Water temperature in inner tank is too low. Ambient temperature or water temperature in inner tank is too high. Refrigerant liquid leakage. Pipe in the cooling system is blocked.

Ice making cycle is normal but no ice is made.

B. Abnormal Breakdown Problem

There is no water in the unit, but the unit is still making ice and will not stop

Possible Cause
Maybe the stainless steel tube and the stainless piece on the water outlet is shorted. So the controller cant find there is no water in the unit. Maybe the two pin of water detect plug on the PCB is shorted

Solution
Open the cover of the unit, check it and make sure that the up water inlet pipe does not contact with the stainless steel piece underneath of top cover. Check the pcb.

There are enough water in the water tank, but the indicator of add water lit on and the unit stop working.

Maybe the lead of the water detecting is broken. Maybe plug on the PCB is broken. Maybe the water pump is breakdown.

Check the lead, and change a new one. Check it. Check it and change to a new one.

Maybe the water filter on the bottom of the water tank is blocked. Maybe somewhere of water flowing way obstructed. During one ice-making process, some ice cube are very small, some ice-cube are normal the is

Remove the water filter and clean it, the reinstall back. Check it, substance. remove the obstruct

Maybe the ice case is not level If the ice case is level, maybe the micro switch is installed incorrectly. May the unit is too hot.

Open the top cover, adjust the ice case to level position. Remove the left side panel, check the micro switch position. Check the fan motor is work or not. Dont let the condenser too hot, otherwise the cooling will not work normal. Change another motor. Remove obstruct. It is too low, normally people will not let the unit work to produce the ice cube. If you want so, move the unit to a little high temperature environment. Remove the ice cube, wait for some minutes to let the unit restart again.

The ice case cant move to the correct position.

Maybe the synchronous motor is breakdown. Maybe something obstruct the ice case.

There is no enough ice cube in the ice basket, but the indicator of ice full lit on.

May the room temperature is too low, like 10 centigrade.

Maybe the ice cube touch the sensor occasionally when the ice case push the ice cube into the ice basket.
