Lesson using the song Are You Lonesome Tonight by Elvis Presley:

You will need a recording of the song to play to the students. Preparation: Cut up the lyrics into strips containing one line of the song (you need a set to distribute to each student or pairs or groups, depending on the size of your class). Make copies for each student with the gap fill exercise on one side and the complete lyrics on the other. Activity: 1. Distribute the sets of cut up lyrics and explain to students that they have to listen to the song and put the lyrics in the correct order. You will probably have to play the recording at least twice. 2. When everyone has finished, remove the strips and distribute the gap fill exercise. Tell the students that they are not allowed to look at the other side of the sheet at this time. Instruct the students that they have to listen again and fill in the missing words. Again, it will probably be necessary to play the song at least twice. When everyone has finished, tell them to check their answers with the correct lyrics on the other side of the sheet. 3. Let the students ask about unknown vocabulary and pronunciation then go round the class asking individual students to read aloud a few lines of the song. 4. Initiate a discussion about the story behind the song and the students opinions about the two characters and their behaviour, etc. 5. Finally, play the recording again and let the students sing along!

Are You Lonesome Tonight?

Are you lonesome tonight? Do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart? Does your memory stray To a bright summer day

- Elvis Presley

When I kissed you and called you sweetheart? Do the chairs in your parlour seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep And picture me there? Is your heart filled with pain? Shall I come back again? Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight? I wonder if youre lonesome tonight You know someone said that the world's a stage And we each must play a part. Fate had me playing in love with you as my sweetheart. Act one was when we met, I loved you at first glance You read your lines so cleverly and never missed a cue Then came act 2, you seemed to change, you acted strange And why I've never known. Honey, you lied when you said you loved me And I had no cause to doubt you. But I'd rather go on hearing your lies Than to go on living without you. Now the stage is bare and I'm standing there With emptiness all around And if you won't come back to me Then they can bring the curtain down. Is your heart filled with pain? Shall I come back again? Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight?
