Arctic Animals Explanation Sheet Prep Checklist of Odd Items: 1. Have the book The Mitten. 2. Block of Ice for Ice Sculpture Tuesday 3. Ice Cubes & blocks and slush or snow for Thursday 4. Sugar Cubes 5. Dice and Pennies for Friday 6. Playdough Ingredients for Monday MONDAY Language Arts: Read The Mitten & Flannel Board Story Line: Read this book and cut out the attached steps, laminate and put velcro on the back. Pass out the pictures to the children and have them try to put them in the same order on a flannel board as in the book. Arts & Crafts: Stuffed Polar Bears: Have enough white lunch bags so each child has one. Draw a profile of a bear and have the child cut it out so you have 2 separate bears (or cut out if the children are too young). Staple the bears together around the outside leaving the head open. The child can stuff tissue paper or newspaper in the hole to make the bear full. Then the head can be stapled and the child can decorate the rest of the bear with a crayon or marker. Science/Math: Blue/Azul Play dough: Make the following play dough recipe with the children then suggest they create play dough water for Arctic Animal to swim in (they can use other colors of play dough to make animals). Make sure you discuss how the color is Azul in Spanish. Basic Playdough (Nonedible): Mix 1 cup flour, 2 Tbsp cream of tartar, and cup salt in a pan. Mix blue food coloring with 1 cup water, add with 12 Tbsp oil then add to dry mixture. Cook over medium heat until thick. Small Group: Skating on Paper Plates: Have the children spread out or take turns in an open area. They can step on paper plates to use as skates while they slide across the floor. Turn on fun music for them to skate toyou can have them skate to the beat (fast, slow and pause it for them to stop)! TUESDAY Language Arts: Letter A Writing Sheet: Make enough copies of the attached writing sheet for each child. Make sure to assist each child individually. Arts & Crafts: Decorate Mittens: Trace mitten shapes onto any color of construction paper. Have the children cut out and decorate their mittens with gems, sequins, markers, etc.. Science/Math: Ice Sculpture: Place a block of ice in a dishpan. Place a small bowl of rock salt next to the ice for the children to spoon over the ice. Have colored water (diluted food coloring) and droppers in bowls next to the ice for the children to make designs on the ice. Talk to the children about primary & secondary colors, blue, azul, etc.. Small Group: Hickory Dickory Dock: Print off the attached times, laminate and hand out to the children. While reading the attached rhyme, have the children hold up the correct time. You can also use your own play clock to show the matching time with hands on a clock.

WEDNESDAY Language Arts: Penguin Color Match: Cut out attached penguin, colored bowties, and color words and laminate. Have the children pick a color word, help them sound it out then place the correct bowtie on the penguin. Continue with all the colors. Arts & Crafts: Sugar Cube Igloos: Have the children glue together sugar cubes on a piece of cardboard to make a small igloo. Then add a large white cotton ball and a small pom pom to the opening for the polar bears behind. Can add glitter to the cardboard too! Science/Math: Favorite Alaskan Animals Chart: Use the chart provided to chart the childrens favorite Alaskan Animals. When complete, discuss which animal has the most, least, same number, etc..of votes. Small Group: Waddle Like Penguins Race: Pair the children up having one partner on either end of a room. The children that start will put a rolled up sock between their legs and will waddle to their partner who will feed them a goldfish cracker before taking the sock between their legs and going to the other end where theyll be fed a goldfish cracker also. THURSDAY Language Arts: Sing Songs: Use the attached songs to sing at group time. Arts & Crafts: Glitter A is for Apples: Cut out apple shapes from white construction paper. Have the children put glue all over their apples, then sprinkle with red glitter. Then put a big letter A in glue on top of the red glitter and have the children use green glitter on the A. You can also cut out brown stems and green leaves for them to glue to their apple. Science/Math: Sensory Table Igloos: Put all sizes of ice cubes in your sensory table for the kids to build igloos and be creative. The slush and snow can make a good glue for the cubes. The kids might want to put on their gloves so their hands arent so cold. Also provide sandbox toys and shovels for the children to play with. Small Group: Paper Snowball Fight: Separate a small group of kids into 2 teams. Tip a couple of tables on their sides so the children can hide behind. Have them crumple up white paper and have snowball fights. You can also place a waste can in front of each teams table and see how many snowballs each team throws in the other teams can.
