the Market Attractiveness the Competitive Advantage of Strategic Business Unit of Evening Breeze.

In the following Portfolio, these two elements are put together and compared in order to find following out which countries are the most suitable and ready for the Evening Breeze system. countries Below you can see the process used to create the Business Portfolio and the way how the selection of the final country has been achieved. achieved.

1.1 PRESENTATION

OF THE COUNTRIES

The starting point of this analysis consists of the study and the evaluation of each country consists of each present in our area: India Ocean and South-East Africa. The countries put into area: South-East Africa. consideration are 15 in total. For South East Africa have been considered the following countries: countries: Botswana Kenya Malawi Mozambique Namibia South Africa Tanzania Zambia Zimbabwe

For the Indian Ocean area the following ones have been studied: Comoros Madagascar Maldives Mauritius Reunion Seychelles

1.2 COUNTRYS PROFILE

Initially several factors have been studied in order to evaluate every country. All these factors affect the readiness and the actual position of these countries. However, it is important to take in consideration that the main tool for the researching was is to Internet, and for this reasons in some countries the data need to be updated or it was countries data impossible to find. find. All the important information were collected and inserted in the Countrys profile charts below. See the Exhibit 1 below. As you can see from the first pillar of the chart, the factors have been clustered by 6 main categories : General Information Climate Energy resources Political Environment Economic Environment Tourism

For every category different sub-elements are included, in order to evaluate the most sub-elements included, important issues involved in the selection of the countries. For instance, for the General Information several factors have been considered like instance, Population, Size, Language, Exchange Rate and the Gross Domestic Product per capita. Language, Domestic The importance of these elements affects the choice in the selection of the countries. They can importance clarify how the market can or cannot be easily penetrable for the product. This careful examination is a very important step, it allows to compare the relative attractiveness of different products-markets using the set of criteria of attractiveness. attractiveness.

1.3 MARKET ATTRACTIVENESS

In different ways each category influences the attractiveness of the countries. Some factors each countries. need to be taken in consideration more, and others are less important. The importance and the more, and weight of these factors are related to the Evening Breeze System.

A) How the different groups of factors have been evaluated for the Market? group Market?
First of all, all the factors that have been considered important are weighted to represent their relative importance, as follows: follows

Market Attractiveness Factors

Based on the countrys profile and on the weights seen above, an accurate rating system has country above, been built. See the Exhibit 2 built. The rank goes from 0 to 3. 0 means the lowest opportunity in that market and so the attractiveness is lower. Vice versa, for countries with 3 means more opportunities and a major attractiveness in these countries. Due to this system, the rating has been done country by country. See Appendix 3 In this way all the results are based on real data and numbers, that allows to find out which allows country is the most attractive. In this part, the countries have been rated just based on the Market Attractiveness, in order to complete the Business Portfolio. These results will be combined with the Competitive Portfolio. Advantage of Evening Breeze. The countries will be ranked only at the end, when CA and MA will be evaluated in each country.

1.4 COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

As explained in the beginning of the report, the other important pillar of the Analysis is the explained the Competitive Advantage of EB. The CA of EB is evaluated in each country, based on what EB can offer in addition comparing to its competitors that are already present on the market if there are any. any. As you will deduct from the following evaluation, in the area not even one competitor can offer not the same system (in dimensions and in the saving of energy).

A) How the different group of factors have been evaluated for the Competitive Advantage?
In line with the Market Attractiveness, the same process has been followed: the

choosing the criteria and criteria giving them the right weight.

This time the rating system has been built in a more simple way because the evaluation regards only the presence of the CA we have in these countries. Here the factors are weighted Here in function of their relative importance. Rating

no competitive advantage low competitive advantage competitive advantage high competitive advantage

The rating based on the Competitive Advantage of EB has been built for the sake of the of evaluation of each country and inserted in a chart. See Exhibit 4 It can be easily deducted that EB is the only one in the market that can offer this system and deducted at the same time reduce the cost, because it consumes the 60% less energy. because In addition, it is important to point out that EB is already present in Maldives through an agent and they already built up a strategy mode and developed contacts in Mauritius, Seychelles. For Mauritius, Seychelles. that reason, EB has a strong CA in these areas comparing to potential competitors who want to enter the market now. now. After these two evaluations, the one of CA and MA, it is now possible to compare the achieved evaluations results in order to complete the Business Portfolio Analysis and find the final countries which are ready to be approached. approached.

Nevertheless, attentiveness is recommended with the Seychelles Nevertheless, Seychelle market at the moment, as it is among the most indebted countries in the world, for this reason EB should be very careful and has to consider the possible threats related threats to this situation, like the decrease of tourism (more than 15%). 15%).

CHAPTER 2 Evening Breeze in South Africa - Opportunities

This country can really offer several opportunities for EB system. These opportunities are fixed in the following list, in order of importance, opportunity for the Evening Breeze system. They will be explained one by one in the next paragraphs. system. paragraphs

2.1 WHY EVENING BREEZE

SOLUTION IN

SOUTH AFRICA

How Evening Breeze can use these opportunities thes opportunities Tourism represents the biggest opportunity for EB. Thanks to the World Cup, South Africa is also investing a lot in order to offer more developed investing infrastructures. Due to these trends Evening Breeze can offer an innovative solution for the infrastructures new hotels. The company can take advantage of the number of hotels and resorts that are hotels. that being built in these days and offer a new sustainable and ecological approach on the market of air conditioning system in order to satisfy and to attract the consumers. The number of tourists and the number of visits is increasing in South Africa. The expected Africa. amount of tourists in the summer of 2010 is about 830.000. An event, as important as the World Cup, will help tourists to appreciate this area and to Cup, spread among people the enthusiasm for this country. It is a good opportunity for South Africa opportunity to show the tourists what it can offer. In a country where tourism is first of all a luxury tourism, they can offer a product in line with country it. At the same time, satisfying a country more involved, day after day, in the green issue EB can offer them an eco-product. an eco-product.

Eco Tourism and Environment: Environment: Problem in South Africa: like in every country which is a producer and consumer of electricity Africa: there are risks and environmental damages associated with the production and consumption of energy: Accidents: Major industrial accidents or major technological risks are issue a growing concern Water pollution Air pollution The worsening of the greenhouse effect Deforestation and desertification Radioactive emissions and radioactive waste

South African is ranked at the 14th place as producer of electricity all over the world with a production of 264 billions of kWh in 2008 and at the 15th place as biggest energy consumer in the world with around 241billion kWh per year. For its position South Africa really cares about and is really involved in the environmental issues.

Evening Breeze solution: Evening Breeze system takes in consideration the negative impact of solution: the air co on the environment; and at the same time how important a sustainable approach is. For instance this company takes responsibility towards the environment and knows that even if the environment is in danger, hotels need an air co system to satisfy their consumers. Thats why Evening Breeze created a system of cooling beds that a comfortable solution but giving

benefits for the environment in the energy reduction allows at the same time. Moreover its important for Evening Breeze to use environmentally friendly materials. The environmentally friendly materials goes from using FSC-approved wood to the usage of a coolant that contains no chlorine in order to not damage the atmospheres ozone layer. All these features are in line with the environmental approach that South Africa wants to continue to follow. Eco-Tourism is a real opportunity in South Africa. Eco-Tourism Africa. Eco-tourism is the reason why many international travellers visit South Africa, and as South Africa, Africa has so much environmental diversity, cultural diversity, scenic beauty and diversity, diversity incredible wildlife, it is almost impossible to tour the country without having some sort of wildlife, nature experience. There are gorgeous beaches, trendy shopping malls, great entertainment and a fast growing beaches, malls, eco-tourism industry to experience.

Eco-tourism is of utmost important to the South African

tourism industry and they are ensuring that visitors, foreign and local ones not only get to they enjoy the spectacular natural attributes, but also get to learn something new culturally. spectacular This country has showed since 1996 a particular interest in the sustainable tourism. Responsible tourism is not a luxury for South Africa. It is an absolute necessity if Africa. South Africa is to emerge as a successful international competitor (The White Paper on the Development and Promotion of Tourism in South Africa, 1996) It recognized the importance of this type of tourism. Evening Breezes aim is to offer a product Breezes able to attract and satisfy consumers in a sustainable way.

Electricity consumption solution: South Africa Situation: The main inconvenience of the air conditioning system is their Situation: electricity consumption. When a hotel decides to invest in air conditioning, it has to consider the high costs related to the electricity consumption. This high consumption is due to the fact consumption. that the air conditioning must constantly seek the ideal temperature and this research is even more laborious if the hotel is located in an area that is poorly insulated. South Africa is directly concerned by this issue because it is the 15th biggest energy consumer in the world with around 241billion kWh per year and because the prices rose with more than 40% in the last year and it is going to continue this way in the next years. Evening Breeze Solution: In a country which experienced an electricity crisis in 2008 that resulted shortages and disastrous consequences and where consumers started to reduce their electricity consumption also until this moment, the proposition of a system that can still allow to have the comfort of a fresh bed and also reducing the electricity costs by approximately 60% compared to the principal competitor Evening Breeze air co system has at this moment. According to the forecasts, these feeding power problems will limit the growth of the country for at least the next five years. For that reason Evening Breeze can really offer a solution in order to save energy and to obtain an advantage compared to the traditional air co systems.

Climate solution South Africa Situation : When tourists go to South Africa it is a radical change for most of them. They may come from different countries where climate conditions are completely different and they are not used to live in these climate conditions. When someone changes climate type, one of the main difficulty is to sleep comfortably. The way how they sleep, if it is in warm and wet conditions, can create discomfort for the customers. In this way tourists are not able to be well-rested enough for most of the vacationtime and they cannot really enjoy their stay. Evening Breeze Solution: The first advantage offered by Evening Breeze air conditioning

system is especially the comfort. In fact, to enjoy the air conditioning means also to enjoy the ideal temperature, without thinking about the hot and humid weather. Evening Breeze can offer to its users a less aggressive impact than the traditional air conditioning system. Thanks to this system guests can sleep at an ideal temperature during all the night, without a strong and sometimes unwanted cold environment. Evening Breeze makes it possible to have your dream in a fresh environment, without being disturbing like normal systems. Every hotel, equipped with the Evening Breeze system, will provide for their customers the best solution: environmental friendliness and we can also say health friendly. In addition, Evening Breeze is the solution that allows us to sidestep temperature changes: first of all in South Africa where the differences of temperature between the night and the day are significant and can create a discomfort. Here the bed will be maintained at a constant temperature through the air conditioning system allowing the customers not to suffer from the effects of changes in outside temperature.

CHAPTER 3 Marketing Mix - 4 P: Product, Price, Promotion, Place

In the following part, the role of the 4 P will be clarified in order to reach and penetrate the South African market. How the 4 P can be used by EB? This is the main point. Product Price how EB system can be suitable for the South African market the price strategy, considering different aspects involved for the cost, the purpose in South Africa Promotion how EB can promote its system in the South African market Place different provinces, regions of the country and which are the most ready for EB, and the distribution channels

3.1 EVENING BREEZE PRODUCT

The Evening Breeze system and bed consists of a cooling-unit, an air-channel, a ventilationsock, a remote-controller and a mosquito-net. remote-controller One of Evening Breezes USP (Unique selling point) of Evening Breeze is the high sleep comfort point) in comparison to normal air-conditioning systems. People that use the Evening Breeze system dont have to deal with a sore throat or differences in temperature. This is very suitable for the South African region because the climate during the day is around African 20 degrees in the winter period and about 30 degrees in summer. Regular air-conditioning systems will cool the resorts and lodges enduring the day in such a way that when the tourists are coming back to their rooms after a day in the hot temperatures they get a cold slam when they enter the air-conditioned area, the Evening Breeze system only cools the bed and a small area around it to make a smoother transition from the hot to the cooler area. Next to this, in South Africa the temperature is going down in the night and it could be pleasant for the tourists to keep the windows open. With a normal air-conditioning system this wont be possible but with the Evening Breeze system it is. This could be a nice improvement for the South African lodges. The Evening Breeze mosquito net makes sure that in this case the mosquitos stay away. Because of the reasons mentioned above the Evening Breeze system is also very adaptable to the South African open-air lodges. A ventilator in the internal unit sucks up the air and moves it through the evaporator to the airshaft at the head-side of the bed. The cold air is heavier than the hot air which makes sure it will down. By attaching a at the bottom hermetic sealed mosquito-net only a small part of the cooled air will be obsolete. The rest of the air will be sucked up by the internal unit and the whole process will start over again. With the help of an innovative air-stream conductor the air is being circulated within the Evening Breeze bed. In this way the Evening Breeze system can lead to an energy saving of 60%. This could be a large advantage for South Africa because in 2008 the country had to deal with a numerous

energy shortages. The prices for energy at that time were very low so the state owned energy providing company Eskom increased the prices with 70%. For the resorts and lodges now the prices of energy are rather high so if they could lower the use of energy by using the Evening Breeze system it will save them a lot of money. The cooling system is based on a compression-cooler, this technique can be considered worldwide as the most important cooling technique, this means also the air-conditioning experts in South Africa that install the regular air-conditioning systems in the resorts and lodges should be able to install the system. The cooling system is made out of an internal and external unit. The internal unit, which is completely constructed by Evening Breeze, exists out of carefully chosen parts that guarantee less noise, high efficiency, and high sustainability. With the help of copper fuses the cooling substance is led from the internal unit, which is placed under the bed, to the external unit. This external unit is placed outside of the hotel on a wall or the roof. This unit contains the noisy compressor and the condensation system which moves the warm air. While the resorts and lodges in South Africa are often very small and made of nature stones or wood this system is very suitable for the countries type of tourism. Because of the fact the noisy compressor is placed outside people are not disturbed when they sleep and they can enjoy the beautiful sounds of the South African nature. Also the interior within the room is not spoiled by the internal compressor under the bed so the real South African atmosphere can be maintained. The Evening Breeze system is made out of a cooling-unit, an air-channel, a ventilation-sock, a remote-controller and a mosquito-net. The advantage of the Evening Breeze construction is that each resort can design its own bed that fits with the interior of the rooms. Also the choice of the mattress is free, however Evening Breeze advises its customers to use harder mattresses. In this way the people who lie on the mattresses will not sink in it and hold the warmth. The manufacturing and installation of the system can be preformed by a local specialist because of the fact that the Evening Breeze system not really defers from a conventional air-conditioning system. The fact that the system can be installed by a local specialist can save a lot of costs in the first place and in the second place the South African resorts have a real authentic interior in their lodges and if the bed frame can be manufactured and installed by local specialists this native look can be maintained. The after service that comes with the purchase of the Evening Breeze air-conditioning system can be arranged as given in article 8; Guarantee, in the General Terms and Conditions of Evening Breeze B.V.1 The South African law will not cause any problems concerning the terms and conditions stated in this contract.

1 Appendix: General Terms and Conditions Evening Breeze B.V.

3.2 EVENING BREEZE PLACE

In this first part, each region has been studied in order to select the most promising for the Evening Breeze System. South Africa country is composed of 9 provinces in total, and for each province there are provinces total, different districts. The most important features of the divisions will be studied in the Where most part. In the following analysis, to make it easier, region will be used as synonym of province. analysis, The definition of the regular Place will be given as market coverage, channel member selection, logistics, and levels of service.

3.2.2 REGIONS SELECTION

For the selection among the 9 regions of South Africa, we have also analyzed three different Africa, important indicators.

1. Provincial distribution of Internal Arrivals: with the help of this chart it is possible to Arrivals: is

2. Provincial distribution of Total Foreign Direct Spend: at the first three places we find the same three provinces, Gauteng, Western Cape and Kwazulu-Natal. At the end these, three indicators being considered together can give us a total image of which these, are the regions that attract more tourists and at the same time which are more involved in the tourism activity. Considering these aspects, these regions are more interesting and more in line with the Evening Breeze System. For the opportunities, offered by these provinces, their features and the above indicators, the opportunities, provinces, 5 following provinces have been selected:

1. Gauteng 2. Western Cape 3. Kwazulu Natal 4. Limpopo

5. Mpumalanga

However, from the deep study region by region, we have discovered that Gauteng is more an However, urban area. This means that it is crowded of hotels already including air co and not suitable as area. target market of Evening Breeze. It would be wise to concentrate on the others 4 regions, where the number of lodges is higher and it is easier to penetrate.

3.2.3 ENTRY MODE & DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL

While entering a new market that is quite unknown for a company first it is safer to enter with the least risk required. In the case of Evening Breeze the best solution is exporting. This kind of mode is the most suitable if a target country has limited sales potential, little product adaptation required and it is not possible to produce in the target country as in South Africa for Evening Breeze for this moment. Under these circumstances the company is able to minimize risk and investment, have a fast speed of the entry and maximize the scale by using existing facilities. On the other side Evening Breeze will have to face the transport costs, limits of access to local information and it has to make its reputation there without having a subsidiary in the country. Export can be divided into two parts, direct and indirect exporting. An enterprise becomes an indirect exporter when its products are sold in foreign markets without any special international activity on its part. Companies with more a proactive view to international expansion will probably prefer to have more control over the export process, how their product is been sold, this can be reached with direct exporting. This method offers the company potentially higher profits and a closer relationship to the overseas market Direct exporting can mean that the company uses direct selling with sales representatives, agents, distributors/wholesales or local sales offices. In this project there are two offered strategies: The first one is working with wholesalers in South Africa, the other one is direct selling that Africa, means selling directly to resorts in the area. A foreign distributor is a merchant who purchases goods at a substantial discount and resells it for a profit. Choosing dealing with distributors over having agents gives a better opportunity to the company as a wholesaler can provide better after sales service, they usually have personnel for the supporting and servicing operations. Plus in general a distributor has more contacts than an agent who works on his own and is a bigger company because it has to have the liquidity to buy the products from the producer company, here from Evening Breeze which can take burden off the shoulder of the company. It gives a whole package to the company that is crucial especially in the case of a smaller company. Above, a market entry market selection tool was added, to show why Choosing a wholesaler is better than direct exporting for Evening Breeze. The factors are rated for a scale from 1(poor) to 5(good).

Criteria how the foreign distributors were chosen: It was taken into consideration that the company has to have long-term experience in selling air-conditioning systems. It means knowledge in the products, in the needs of target customers. The distributor needs to have well-trained after service personnel or to have a reliable relationship with a service provider company. Another factor that needs to be considered is the market share of the distributor in that market, which results more contacts, more possibilities, a network. The best solution is to find a company that has branches all over the country. Normally with a high market share the good reputation comes together. This is an other essential part of the desired distributor. The distributor has to be willing to deeply get to know the product that is really important in the case of Evening Breeze as it is an innovative, eco-product. It needs to have a positive attitude and attention towards Evening Breezes product program, to its marketing, and to keep the image it has been built. Taken the above mentioned criteria in account there are four potential distributors active in South Africa that could form a good match with Evening Breeze. 4 Seasons Air-conditioning: supplies, installs and maintains all types of air-conditioning and Air-conditioning: refrigeration. Future Opportunities KwaZulu Natal

Mkhambathini Game Reserve

The area is located immediately to the north-east of the N3 motorway linking Durban and Pietermaritzburg - the western extent of the proposed reserve actually borders on Pietermaritzburgs eastern suburbs. A limb of the area crosses the N3 at the Mkhondeni River and may enable the established Bizley Nature Reserve in Pietermaritzburg to link with the new park. A major feature for the reserve will be the Msunduzi River which meanders along the northern boundary. In addition, there are a number of smaller rivers running through the reserve draining into the Msunduzi. The terrain itself is eminently suitable for the variety of species planned. The proposed development is expected to cover approximately 15 000 ha of valley bushveld and grassland from the N3 to the Msunduzi river. A large portion of it falls within the Mkhambathini Municipality. It is expected to act as a catalyst in promoting and encouraging Municipality. further development along the Corridor. It is anticipated that the Game Reserve and adjacent historical and cultural tourism attractions will provide tourists with a range of unique experiences and destinations within easy reach of Durban. Durban. Accordingly, the development proposal has been supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority as an important new tourism product development, which would create new tourism plant. Planned Facilities: The reserve, which will be eleven thousand hectares in extent, is Facilities: currently undeveloped. Promoters plan a network of rest camps, exclusive lodges, exclusive lodges, bush camps, conference facilities, restaurants and game viewing roads. A few upmarket houses on sectional titles are planned.

Cengeni Game Reserve Re

The proposed project is located adjacent to the KwaZulu-Natal s flagship game reserve, HluhluweUmfolozi Park. The plan is to develop a multi-purpose Park. zone that would directly benefit the local inhabitants who are, by and large, poverty stricken and highly dependent on initiatives such as this as they strive for a better life. The large concession area will enable the investor and partners to build a unique destination with a competitive array of products and attractions. The relatively large size of the reserve allows for an increased capacity for rooms and hospitality facilities. In terms of size, the reserve could possibly provide for two sensitively designed medium-sized lodges of approximately 40 beds each without detracting from the wilderness of the area. Alternatively, in addition to one main lodge, a leisure residential ecoestate could be developed in the reserve and be placed far enough from the lodge to not have any impact on it. One of the major impacts of establishing a suitably large reserve is that it becomes a destination in which a whole package of exclusive eco-tourism activities can be undertaken. The opportunities above all fit within the overall product development theme of culture and wildlife matches which itself is aligned with the product development strategies of Zululand District Municipality and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal. 3.3.5. Promotion Costs

From the above mentioned categories, it would be a wise idea to primarily focus on trade fairs & magazines, as it is a good method to gain awareness in the market. As it was previously mentioned, trade fairs are a good opportunity to meet the right people, whereas the magazines are the best way to bring to the right attention on your product. Besides, a company should also advertise on some online directory portals, as the company information will basically be accessible from every corner of South Africa. Some sites even Africa. have free of charge services. After some market awareness was attracted and future investments in the market are planned, the company can consider subscribing for some trade organizations, which would facilitate its overall activities in the market. In the table below, an estimation of the promotion cost involved over a period of 8 months, from august 2009 to March 2010, is shown. Our first promotional initiative will be in 20-21 August, when the Greening Southern Africa trade and exhibition will take place. A 3X3 stand at this event costs around R 11 286. For the months september, november and january we chose to advertise in Heating & Cooling, a trade magazine that is published alternate monthly (six times a year). For the Cooling, first month (september) it is wise to opt for a more visibile adevertisment, but not the most expensive, as the budget is limited. A horizontal, at the rate of R4900 is a good compromise. In the following months, based on the previous results, future advertisments will be taken into consideration. In february and march, another two important trade fairs will take place, respectively BuyEnvironmental Trade Show and Conference in February, with a rate of R 15 000 per 3x3 stand and Hostex in the period 8-10 March 2010, with R 4 170 for the stand. For the online directories no rates are e published, so we dont know the exact costs involved. It is the same with the transportation costs to the trade fairs. The total expenditure with the promotion for 8 months would reach in this case R 43 856, which converted into euro at the exchange rate of 14.06.09, is 3894 . 3. Costs Involved
Hereby we calculated an estimative final price. We took as basis the FOB price given to us by Evening Breeze and we added the transportation cost (shipment) from China to South Africa. A Africa. 20G container costs 450 USD to Durban and 750 if we want to transport it by truck to Johannesburg. At the current exchange rate (14.06.09) 750 USD is the equivalent of 535. Johannesburg. We set a realistic target of 30 Evening Breeze sets to be shipped in the next 8 months and we calculated the volume prices accordingly. In one container fit 10 pallets, each pallet containing 3 indoor units, 3 outdoor units and 3 air canals. So, for 30 sets we need one 20G container, if it is to ship all the sets at once, or more, depending on the quantity. In our calculation, we considered that we will ship all the sets in one shift. The next step was to add the Import duties of 15%. For the wholesaler we considered an estimative margin of 20%, as we didnt receive any real data. Finally, we added the promotion costs involved and applied a VAT of 14% to get to a final price of 2923. The total estimative sales amount is 87 690. As we do not have a desired margin data from Evening Breeze it is impossible for us to calculate prospect profits resulted from the sales.

Gauteng
Situated in the heart of the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, with only 1.4% of the land area, but it is highly urbanised and has a population of 8,837,178 (2001), the second-largest after KwaZulu-Natal. 2005 estimates as put forward by the CSIR Gauteng Spatial Development Perspective suggest, however, that Gauteng has overtaken KwaZulu Natal to become the most populous province in South Africa, with a total of 9.5 Africa, million people living there, growing at around 100,000 people every year. Johannesburg, Africa's largest metropolis, and Tshwane, the country's administrative capital, Johannesburg, Africa's are 56 kilometres apart. The province is home to three of South Africa's six metropolitan Africa's municipalities.

Climate Summers are sunny and hot with relief-bringing showers in the late afternoon. Summer rainfalls average 464 millimetres annually. Winters are five months long, although winter days are generally sunny despite the drop in night-time temperatures. Summers last for seven months, with temperatures hitting the early 30C during November, December and January. The average daily temperature is 22,4C and Gautengers enjoy 8,5 hours of sunshine per day one of the highest rates of sunshine in the world. Snow rarely falls in Gauteng. Gauteng.

Economy Gauteng is considered the economic hub of South Africa and contributes heavily in the financial, manufacturing, transport, technology and telecommunications sectors, amongst others. It also plays host to a large number of overseas companies requiring a commercial base in and gateway to Africa. Africa. Although Gauteng is the smallest of South Africa's nine provinces - it covers only 1.4% of the Africa's country's total land area - it contributes 33.9% of its gross domestic product (GDP). Indeed Gauteng generates 10% of the GDP of the entire African continent. Gauteng is growing rapidly, due to mass urbanisation that is a feature of many developing countries. According to the State of the Cities Report, the urban portion of Gauteng comprised primarily of the cities of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni (the East Rand) and Tshwane (greater Pretoria) - will be a polycentric urban region with a projected population of some 14.6 million people by 2015, making it one of the largest cities in the world. AIDS may however negate this projection. This rapid growth has brought with it both opportunities and challenges. As a global focal point, with access to the Southern African hinterland, Gauteng has the ability to link the world to a population approximately the same size as the United States. It is fast becoming to subStates. Saharan Africa what the Eastern Seaboard megalopolis is to America. But this also presents America. some formidable obstacles, most notably the ability to provide access to basic amenities such as electricity and potable water. Transport is also a major problem, and Johannesburg, as the Johannesburg, core of Gauteng, is beginning to experience the heavy traffic problems of cities such as Los Gauteng, Angeles and Bangkok. The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is an attempt to remedy this problem, by Bangkok. providing efficient high-speed rail between Pretoria, Sandton, Johannesburg and OR Tambo International Airport; completion due 2010. Government inability to deal with corruption adds to the problem of a region already bursting at the seams with illegal immigrants. These refugees from the rest of Africa flood into the economic hub of Southern Africa seeking a better life. They bring with them the legacies of the countries they are fleeing. It remains to be seen if this region can continue to play savior to the people of other African states, without negatively being affected.

Tourism Introduction 1. Gauteng's share of the South African tourisms growth has remained constant at about 50 Gauteng's percent of all international tourists to the country and the share in domestic tourism stands at 20 percent. The majority of these domestic travellers (68 percent) are people visiting friends and relatives. 2. Gauteng Tourism Authority It is pleasing to note that Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has identified tourism as a key sector to drive economic growth and development and one of the key mechanisms in achieving the goals set out in the Gauteng Growth and Development Strategy, the Gauteng Spatial Development Perspective and the Gauteng 2014 Vision. This proactive approach aligning the brand position of Gauteng to the South African "alive with possibilities" brand

position and developing it from a competitive Global City Region perspective to act as a catalyst for improved integration and co-ordination of institutions leading to higher rates of economic growth and development is a commendable initiative. This will in turn ensure positive impact to the goal of increasing visitor numbers and bed-nights spent in the province as well as visitor spend and tourism's contribution to the provincial economy. Gauteng province boasts advanced infrastructural and facilities development. The provincial tourism authority should take advantage of these high level pillars to provide a framework for integrating tourism activities and partnerships within a common purpose but the implementation of projects and programmes will be the real measures of success. The strategy further seeks to facilitate customer visitation on the one side, with the areas of management required to facilitate customer satisfaction and repeat visitation on the other side, as an integrated process. 3. Tourism growth, job opportunities and the economy With an increase of 8,3 percent in visitors to the country from 2006, South Africa's tourism Africa's industry is a significant part of the country's GDP. To date, the industry caters for seven percent of South Africa's jobs. The industry is vital for the continued growth of the economy. Ecotourism In view of the importance of ecotourism and the role this sector plays in the industry, the sustainability of associated resources is paramount. KZN Wildlife provides a broad spectrum of eco-accommodation facilities catering for most income groups. Such facilities include camping, hutted accommodation, luxury lodges and bush camps. These facilities are scattered throughout the KZN Wildlife reserves with two dominant spatial concentrations, namely the Drakensberg and the northeast Zululand/St Lucia area. The annual occupancy rates vary between different accommodation facilities and different reserves. Seasonal fluctuations, marketing, popularity of locality and visitor preferences also influence occupancy rates. Therefore, an across the board annual occupancy rate does not provide a true reflection of the use of KZN Wildlife accommodation. When the accommodation is divided according to type, the picture becomes clearer and occupancy rates are as follows: Camping and caravanning (R30 R60 per person per day): 45% Hutted accommodation (R65 R250 per person per day): 60% Luxury hutted accommodation (R300 R600 per person per day): 85% The tourism boom is expected to continue, generating higher occupancy rates throughout the spectrum of possible accommodation. Of interest is the high occupancy rate for luxury hutted accommodation, illustrating a high demand for that standard of accommodation.

Northern Cape
The province of Northern Cape, on the western side of South Africa is bordered to the north by Namibia and Botswana, to the east by North-West, Free State, and Eastern Cape provinces, to State, the south and southwest by Western Cape province and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It Ocean. covers 29,7% of the total land of South Africa. Africa. It is a region of startling contrast very well known for its diverse natural and cultural heritage. The Northern Cape lies to the south of the mighty Orange River and comprises mostly desert and semi-desert. The landscape is characterized by vast arid plains with outcroppings of haphazard rock piles. The cold Atlantic Ocean forms the western boundary.

Climate, Temperature and Rainfall Northern Cape has a mostly arid to semi-arid climate, few areas in the province receive more than 400mm of rainfall per annum. Rainfall generally increases from west to east. The west experiences most rainfall in winter, while the east receives most of its moisture from late summer thunderstorms. Many areas experience extreme heat, with hottest temperatures in South Africa measured along the Namibian border. Summers maximums are generally 30C or higher, sometimes higher than 40C. Winters are usually frosty and clear, with southern areas sometimes becoming bitterly cold, such as Sutherland, which often receives snow and temperatures occasionally drop below the Sutherland, -10C mark. Economy Northern Cape is contrained by climatic extremes, limited water resources and a vast land mass that must be covered to effect efficient service delivery. Thses challenges influence the development of economic environment.

There is a disprportionate ditribution over 29,7% of the total landamss of South Africa. Thism Africa. amounts to the lowest population density in the region. Consequently there is an inadquate local market for local consumption of products. The low population density over a predominantly rural province impacts on the national budget allocation. The region is underdeveloped and the economy relies heavily on primary production in the mining and agriculture industries. The economic growth rate remains moderate (3% in 2004) and the province shows the lowest contribution to the countrys GDP (just over 2% in 2004).

Tourism Tourism has not been a flourishing sector in Northern Cape, restricted to through-traffic and a Cape, linited number of tourists who visited four main attractions: the Augrabies Falls National Park, Park, Namaqualands flowers, the Big Hole in Kimberly and The Kalahari National Park. Namaqualands The National Botanic Institute and DEAT firmly believe that tourism in North Cape is linked to biodiveristy. The total number of trading businesses owned by emerging tourism entrepreneurs in 2005 was 15. This number grew to 49 in 2008 which represents a growth of 226 percent over the past four years. 66 tourism accommodation establishments have been graded out of a total of 706 establishments. This provides the Province with 3 963 quality graded beds out of a total of 8 135 beds. The Northern Cape also raised interest from the select international panel of the prestigious Luxury Tourism Awards, who nominated the province for an award.

Regions Northern Cape has 6 well-defined regions, as follows: Green Kalahari Kalahari Diamond Fields Karoo Nmakva

Green Kalahari - Vast tracts of bleak, shimmering semidesert contrast dramatically with lush green vineyards filling the Orange Rivers fertile valleys. Rivers Today, you can travel peacefully from wine cellars to tearooms in the desert; from a luxurious lodge to the desolation of Verneukpan. Yet, not all is tamed. The mighty Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Africas first transfrontier park, comprises almost 3.7 million hectares of Park, Africas sparsely vegetated, red sand dunes and dry riverbeds. One of Africas last pristine game reserves, the size of the park allows for the mass migration Africas of different species. The reserve provides sanctuary for gemsbok, springbok, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, eland, lion, leopard, cheetah and smaller game. Kalahari a desert area, part of the huge sand basin that reaches from the Orange River up to Angola, in the west to Namibia and in the east to Zimbabwe. Red desert dunes, diverse wildlife, thorntree savannahs and wide open spaces are all part of one of Africa's largest untouched wildlife sanctuaries, the Kalahari Transfrontier Park. With no Park. border between Botswana and South Africa, an area of over 3,6 million hectares ( twice the Africa, size of the Kruger Park ) allows large game to still roam in unspoilt freedom. Diamonds Fields Karoo - is a semi-desert region of South Africa. Its attractions fall within a semi-desert region semi-desert Africa. divided into the arid northern Great Karoo and more temperate southern Little Karoo.

This 75 000 ha reserve hosts the Park. riverine rabbit and black rhinoceros, both once virtually extinct, as well as the quagga - which did become extinct in 1883, only to be recreated, incredibly, from genetic code taken from a stuffed quagga in a museum. South of Beaufort West lies the Little Karoo, a fertile valley bounded by the Swartberg, Langeberg and Outeniqua mountains. Charming towns in valley after valley offer the best in Karoo tourism: hiking, mountain climbing, 4x4 trails, canoeing, horse and ostrich riding, fishing ajd caving. The accommodation alternatives range from backpackers to campsites, caravan parks, selfcatering, bed-and-breakfast, guest houses, lodges and hotels. Every year from July to September, the Namakwaland desert explodes into life. No fewer than 4 000 species of flowers, 1 000 unique to the region can be seen. The Namakwa District has tourism potential in terms of eco-tourism niche market, as it has a vast open land, unique natural flora and a number of national parks and conservancies: Namaqua National Park (Kleinzee / Koingnaas), Tankwa Karoo National Park (Calvinia, Sutherland), Richtersveld National Park The Orange River Mouth Groenspoeg Coastal Park

Eco Tourism Since 2001, The Department of Economic Affairs and Tourism recognized the increasing number of eco tourists, e.g. tourists seeking natural beauty, landscape, wildlife, culture, flora, historical and community tourist experiences, the Northern Cape is ideally suited to capitalize on these trends given its relatively pristine natural environment and rich cultural heritage. Since 2008 Northern Cape is crossed from Diamond Route, the route is geared for both Route, ecotourism and general tourism. Anyway, the opportunity presented in these countries are still high but the eco tourism infrastructures offered by this regions still remain low confronting what is possible to find out in the other provinces of the South Africa. Here the eco-tourism is more concern on the natural tour around the natural landscapes.
