OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE UCONN MENS GOLF TEAM

There are many ways to improve your golf game. You can hit balls on the range, practice putting on the green, or work on your short game. One area of the game that often gets overlooked is the course management. Like all other facets of your game, course management takes practice. I would like to talk today about aiming. I see many amateurs who simply dont know what to aim for. Every shot is aimed dead at the agstick. Sometimes, taking dead aim is not the right play. Part of the reasons that the pros are so good, is because they know when they can re at a agstick, and when they shoot for the middle of the green. Take the picture on the left for example. By going for the agstick here, you have to deal with water short, and water right. The percentage shot would say that going for the middle, or even left of the green will be a better play than going right at the agstick. When faced with a shot such as this one, you must weight

the options. I would ask myself, do I feel like going for the agstick over the middle of the green would save me strokes more than 50% of the time. If the answer is no, my decision is simple. I will play it safe to a spot I know I feel comfortable attacking. The same is true with driving the ball o the tee. Sometimes aiming straight down the center of the fairway is not always the right play. Now, the picture below on the right has a creek that runs down the entire right-hand side of the fairway. In this situation, it may be best to aim for the right side of the fairway to try and take the water out of play. For the more advanced play, I would start it down the left hand side of the fairway with a little cut. You have to stand up on the tee knowing that it is better to be in the right-hand rough, than in the creek. Try these ways to think your way to a better game.
