CATALINA RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FEATURING GPS TRAINING AND ANCIENT SITE SURVEY ON CATALINA ISLAND MARCH 2-4, 2012 ***OPEN TO ARCHAEOLOGY MAJORS***

USC undergraduate archaeologists are invited to apply for funded positions as team members in USCs new research experience: Catalina (Pimu) Island Archaeology Survey
WHEN? During the first weekend of March, 2012 WHERE? USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast from Los Angeles WHAT? You will discover and document unrecorded ancient Native American sites created by the original inhabitants of the island: the Tongva. You will learn how to use one of the most transformational technologies to impact archaeology - global positioning systems (GPS) - and its use in geographic information systems (GIS). You will be an explorer, a scientist, an archaeologist. WHY? As an archaeology major at USC, you can make a difference in a research project while gaining skills that future archaeologists wont be able to live without: global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS). The tools and methods you learn here can be applied anywhere in the world. SCHEDULE: Thursday Mar 1 4-6 pm @ USC Spatial Science Institute, Room B57J training in using Trimble geospatial positioning device Friday Mar 2 afternoon travel to Catalina Island on USCs boat afternoon boat to Catalina with orientation from leading archaeologists; arrive at USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, where we will have our meals and lodging. Saturday Mar 3 all day on Catalina Island archaeological survey in coastal areas near USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, followed by group event in the evening Sunday Mar 4 all day on Catalina Island with return to Los Angeles in late afternoon site exploration and documentation for publication; debrief, return to Los Angeles on chartered boat Thursday Mar 8 4-6pm @ USC Spatial Science Institute, Room B57J training in post processing of data and visualizing results in GIS system HOW TO SECURE YOUR SPOT ON THIS RESEARCH TEAM: Space is limited and funding for this program is competitive. Interested students who can commit to attending each and every session are invited to submit this one page application via email to Lynn Dodd (swartz@usc.edu) by Friday February 4th at 5:00pm. Students will be notified of their application status by February 11th.
