Create a TNS Entry

This instruction covers how to create a Net Service Name in the tnsnames.ora File.

These tasks are performed whenever you need to make a connection to a database.

1. Go to the Start Menu_Oracle Developer Suite Ora10gds_Configuration and Migration Tools_Net Configuration Assistant.

Select Local Net Service Name configuration on the Welcome box. Click Next.

Select Add. Click Next.

Choose Oracle8i or later database or service. Click Next.

Enter in the Service Name field ods.qa. Click Next.

NOTE: Service Names ods.qa qa equals the instance of the database your accessing ods.prod another example of the service name accessing the production instance 6. Highlight TCP Protocol. TCP has been configured for the Listener. The protocols must be installed on the client machine in order for the Listener to run. Click Next.

Enter in the Host Name field quito.ithaca.edu. This is the name for where the database is located.

NOTE: Host Names quito.ithaca.edu quito accesses the qa instance vista.ithaca.edu vista accesses the prod instance

NOTE: Upon connection to ORA-01017, you will receive a message indicating, The test did not succeed. This message is telling you that your attempt to login to the database was unsuccessful, but you have been able to connect to the server. If the database and listener are not running at the same time, select, No, do not test, and then choose Next. 8. 9. When the test is complete, click Next. The Net Service Name Configuration box appears. Enter ods.qa in the Net Service Name field and then click Next.

10. Select No if you do not want to configure any more net service names or Yes to configure another net service name. Click Next.

NOTE: If you select Yes to configure another net service name, you will need to repeat steps 4-9 of this document.

11. When you have finished with the configuration of another Net Serve Name, click Next. A final box will appear indicating you have completed the configuration process.

12. Click Next and then Finish. You have successfully made a connection to a database.
