Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners; A couple of weeks ago, I listened to some very disturbing information. Now, granted I dont live in the world which was being spoken about, nor do most folks I know. But it is a world that Catholics have taken a moral stand on, sometimes in opposition to each other. The world is that of persons who have been convicted of committing a capital crime and are awaiting their sentence on death row at San Quentin State Prison. The presenter was a woman who worked at San Quentin for 26 years, some of that time as Warden. She oversaw 4 executions during her time as Warden. After working in the system she came to the conclusion that the present Death Penalty is a flawed public policy and needs to be ended. After each execution, she asked herself the question Is the world better or safer because of what we did tonight? She had to answer, No. She gave some very compelling reasons, in part because of the overwhelming costs (since 1978 13 persons have been executed in California costing 4 billion dollars), the hollow promise of retribution, that life in prison without parole can be more difficult, and the need to change some of the ways we police in California. This weekend, parishioners will be outside after Mass gathering signatures for the SAFE CA ballot initiative which will replace the Death Penalty with Life in Prison without the possibility of parole. Signatures by registered voters are needed to place this critical initiative on the 2012 CA ballot. Together in Christ;

Father Steve Sallot Pastor

RESPECT LIFE PROTECTION OF THE PRE-BORN "Since it (human life) must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be protected in its integrity, cared for and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being." Catechism of the Catholic Church (2274) Stephen Ministry Christ Caring for People through People. CONFIDENTIAL! Thats what Stephen Ministry is. Everything a person tells his or her Stephen Minister is kept in strict confidence. People are often afraid that if they tell someone what is troubling them, word will get around and others will look down on them. But a Stephen Minister keeps everything a care receiver shares confidential, and through the sharing God works miracles of healing and peace.
