HANOI BEVERAGE CORPORATION HANOI LIQUOR JOINT STOCK COMPANY

OVERVIEW OF ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM STARCH AT HALICO

Hanoi, 3/2009

INTRODUCTION
Hanoi Liquor Joint Stock Company, former known as Hanoi Liquor Factory, was built by Fontaine Liquor Company from France in 1898 at 94 Lo Duc street. Initial designed productivity was 2.5 million litres per year. Over 100 years of founding and development, with liquor production technology combined between conventional fermentation and advanced technology, Halico has become the biggest liquor production company in Vietnam. Our annual production can achieve up to 10million lit ethanol. In 2008, ethanol production achieved 7.2 million L, liquor production was 21 million L. Our annual growth rate is 15-20%.

Our brands
Our well-known brands including Blue bird Vodka, Vina Vodka, Hanoi Vodka, Hanoi Liquor, La Mi, Np Mi, Thanh Mai, etc. are very well accepted by local and international consumers with unforgettable impressions on aromatic and smooth flavour, typically characterized for Vietnamese wet rice civilization. Liquefaction:
Before 2000, the main raw material used for ethanol production was cassava. From 2002, rice and corn have been used as raw materials to produce high quality Vodka, gaining major market share of domestic liquor of Vietnam. Liquefaction at Halico is a batch process. The entire process takes place in the same equipment, with the advantage of simple quality control and the disadvantages of high time and energy consumption (no steam utilization). Previously, sulfuric acid was added during liquefaction to adjust pH. However, stillage has replaced acid in adjusting pH for the last 2 years, resulting in improved yield and labour safety.

In the coming year, our new factory at Bac Ninh will come into operation with the continuous liquefaction process imported from India, resulting in yield increased to 80-90 tones rice powder/day. Superior compared to batch process, continuous liquefaction allows the utilization of secondary steam, shortened liquefaction time, thus reducing loss due to caramellization. More specially, the whole process is automatic.

Saccharification and fermentation Batch saccharification and fermentation are currently

practiced at Halico. However, saccharification and fermentation are simultaneous (this technology is also applied at our new factory). After the addition of hydrolytic enzyme, the solution is cooled to 32-34oC and pumped into fermenting tanks. Yeast is then added together with the suitable nitrogen source. Fermentation process takes more than 72h, then mash is transferred to distillation unit.

Currently, an advanced ethanol production line is

being installed at our new factory in Bac Ninh. In comparison to the current batch system, the continuous cooking line can improve equipment productivity, reduced floor area, reduced saccharification and fermentation time, thus reduced production cost.

Distillation and purification

Distillation system at Halico consists of 3 columns, namely distillation, aldehyde and rectification columns. The final product is purified or food-grade ethanol with concentration of 96.2 96.5%. Purified ethanol produced in each shift is examined for its sensory and physico-chemical characteristics. Product meeting the specifications is stocked, otherwise it is sent back for purification. Qualified products are stored accordingly (as per the raw materials used e.g. rice, corn or cassava).

Halicos new distillation system at Yen PhongBac Ninh

In our effort to improve quality of purified ethanol, Halico has invested the modern distillation system imported from PRAJ- India for use in our new factory in Bac Ninh. This system consists of 7 columns, namely distillation, aldehyde, pre-rectification, rectification, recovery, fusel and methanol columns. This distillation system is energy-saving due to steam utilization among columns. The process takes place at maximal pressure and in specialized columns e.g. methanol and fusel columns, thus ethanol yield and quality is greatly improved.

FUTURE POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF HALICO

The general development plan of Vietnams beverage industry, approved by Ministry of Industrys Decision numbered 18/2007/Q BCN publised on 08 May 2007, identifies the specific targets as following: Developing liquor production companies with modern technology, improving quality of traditional liquors to meet the domestic and exporting demand, to achieve the target of national industrial liquor production of 145 million liters per year. Halicos target is 50 million liters per annum.

Encouraging local companies to corporate with international enterprises in order to produce high quality liquor from local materials. Development of raw material supplying zones and cooperation with local farmers. In addition to the production of food-grade ethanol, accelerating the production of biofuels from agricultural wastes and by-products. Vietnam is an agricultural country with abundant plant wastes, especially in provinces where corn, potato, cassava, sugarcane, pineapple, etc. are planted. Development, production and application of biofuel is one of the approaches to energy saving and poverty reduction.

In conjunction with industrial development orientation, and the application of advanced technology and modern equipments, quality control system ISO 9001-2000 has been implemented since 2008 at Halico. The food safety control system based on ISO 22000-2005 is currently being applied, with the aim to generate our force in the attempt to become the biggest liquor producer in Vietnam.

Halico is planning to move to a new factory at Yen Phong industrial zone, Bac Ninh with the total surface area of 15 hectares and advanced equipments. Ethanol production is targeted to improve to 40,000 L/day and bottling line to 20,000 bottles/h
