Merlin Gerin)s MULTI 9 breakers have been designed to continuallyadapt to these evolving needs using new
innovative solutions. A COMPLETE MODULAR RANGE . Multi9 is not just a name. The significance of '9' is most important for design, as the width of each module is in multiples of 9 mm. auxiliaries viz. shunt trip, undervoltage release, auxiliary contact - all adaptable in field without any special tools and without interrupting power supply. Multi 9 C60H MCB can be used as an incoming breaker and easily co-ordinated with Merlin Gerin MCCBs through effective discrimination & cascading. No line/load restriction ensures that any of the terminals can be used as incoming or outgoing. Suitablefor400 Hzas wellas DCapplications. inadditionto 50 Hz). ( Can be mounted easily in any of the regular distribution boards.

ENERGY SAVING . IEC 898-1995/ IS8828-1996 have recognised the growing importance of limiting power loss in switchgear devices and stipulated maximum permissible power loss values per pole for MCBs. Merlin Gerin C60H MCBs having power loss figures of 40-75% of the stipulated v,alues contribute significantly to this energy saving. '

lEI Residual Current G Circuit Breakers

From large building

to private homes, from industries to hospitals,

electricity is essential.

The daily use of electricity has

become so common place that we tend to forget that it can be
hazardous.

Every year, a large number of people become victims of accidentscaused by negligent use of electricity, and a large number of industrial & domestic fires are attributed
to "electrical fires".

,
I

'- ~,~

The flowof current through electrical facilitiesalways involves risks. Poorly insulated apparatus, faulty wires or the incorrect use of an electrical device cause current to flow through the wrong path (Le. through the insulation)to the earth. This current is called the 'Leakage Current'. Leakage current in an electrical system poses two major risks:

S.~;~;'N GERIN

i;.F';:'-

=--

RISK OF FIRE RISK OF ELECTROCUTION

u~1

...

RISK OF FIRE

A poorly insulated wire, or a loose connection i, enough to create fire hazard: a portion of the current which normallyflows in the conductor can find a way backto the earth through these "leaks", and through materials withvarying degrees of conductivity(metal frames, wet dust, etc.). These materials are not intended to conduct current, and may heat up to such a degree that they will set fire to whatever they are in contact with (insulation, sawdust, etc.). This is the start of a fire. .
8

RISK OF ELECTROCUTION Electrocution is the passage of current through human body, which is dangerous. The flow of current through human body affects two vital functions: II breathing II heartbeat

Id = Un I Rh

Effect of electric current through human body has been well researched and following chart summarizes the results:

500mA

~
~.
Cfb

---t

Immediate cardiac arrest resulting in death.

70 - 100 mA

---t

Cardiac fibrillation; the heart begins to vibrate and no longer beats at a steady rate. This situation is dangerous since it is irreversible.

20 - 30 mA

---t

Muscle contraction can cause respiratory paralysis.

10 mA

---t

Muscle contraction: the person remains "stuck" to the conductor.

1 - 10 mA

TI

---t

Prickling sensations

However, electrocutionshould not be viewed in terms of "current"alone but in terms of "contact voltage" also. A person gets electrocuted by coming in contact with an object that has a different potential from his/her own. This difference in potential causes the current to flow through the body. The human body has known limits: II Under normal dry conditions, voltage limit = 50 V II In damp surroundings, voltage limit = 2$ V II 30 mA is considered to be the allowable maximum current that will not cause irreversible harm.

.
SOLUTION Merlin Gerin's range of residual current circuit breakers offer complete protection against risks of fire and electrocution.

Residual Current Circuit Breakers

I.

Merlin Gerin's RCCBs are capable of detecting earth leakage currents as soon as they appear and breaking the faulty line.
OPERATING PRINCIPLE

. They have a residual current operated electromechanical

release which operates without any auxiliary source of supply to open a circuit automatically in the case of an earth leakage fault between phase and earth greater than or equal to a threshold of 30, 100 or 300 mA. .

Detection

Measurement

. They are set to trip at a maximum value called a "threshold" or sensitivity level which is measured in milliamps. The maximum values coincide with the safety limitsfor the human body or for preventing fires. Positive contact indicationand trip indicationare provided on the front face by red flag indicator.

PROTECTIONOF PEOPLE A 30 mA RCCS will trip instantly when it detects fault current greater than or equal to 30 mA.Allrisk of serious electrocution is avoided. The 30 mA unit provides complementary protection against direct contact; This is referred to as "Protection of People".
PROTECTION OF PROPERTY

. ~m_mmlr
Tripping

. The consequencesmayofbe limited of fault currents through detection the flow priate materials by systematically using
inappro-

devices set to 100 or 300 mA. These devices are capable of detecting any earth leakage current greater than 100/ 300 mA. All risk of fire is avoided. This is referred to as "Protection of Property". NUISANCE TRIPPING All Merlin Gerin RCCSs incorporate a filtering device preventing the risk of unwanted tripping due to transient voltages (lightning, line disturbances on other equipment...) and transient currents (from high capacitive circuits...); . The sensitivity of Merlin Gerin RCCSs does not vary with time assures trouble free operation for years.

DISCRIMINATION time-delayed version, 300mA IS] RCCS provides discrimination with downstream 30 mA and~ 00 mA sensitivity instantaneous residual current devices.
