I. OVERVIEW & TYPICAL CONFIGURATIONS

The Primary Control Unit (PCU) is the intelligent interface that allows the user to communicate with, calibrate, and control the Remote Electrical Tilt (RETs) on the antennas at the cell site. With PCU User Interface Software resident on a PC, the user can change the electrical downtilt of the Vari-Tilt antennas. The PCU is AISG compliant and can communicate with any other AISG compliant antenna. The new PCU-200 provides power and monitors alarms for up to 12 TMAs (Tower Mounted Amplifiers) using dumb Bias-Ts and 3 TMAs using smart Bias-Ts. The following two figures detail how a typical cell site may be configured with Antennas with RETs, Bias-Ts, PCU, and ASIG cabling. The third figure depicts a typical configuration for the PCU-200 in an antenna system. The PCU-200 provides control to the RETs and power and alarm for the TMAs.

WEATHERPROOFING OF AISG CONNECTORS Weatherproofing must be applied between the AISG connection and the Top Bias-T. The application of an adhesive-backed heatshrink is recommended as shown in the picture below from the base of the Bias-T connector extending the entire length of the AISG cable connector, and onto the AISG cable itself. Care should be taken to not damage the AISG cable insulation when applying heat to the connection.

CSS Antenna warranties do not cover water damage caused by improperly weatherproofed connections.

IV. INSTALLATION AND CONNECTION OF PCU INTO THE NETWORK

Unit as depicted in Figure 3 is intended for wall mounting. Rack mount units (PCU100-RM19 and PCU100-RM23) are available for 19 and 23 equipment racks, respectively.

Figure 3 - PCU100, Wall Mount, Front Panel The front panel has LEDs to show status of power, data, and fault conditions. Any fault in the PCU or in the RETs that are connected to the PCU will illuminate the red RET FAULT LED. Proper +24VDC or 48VDC input power will illuminate the green LED associated with that input voltage. A successful power conversion inside the PCU to +12VDC and +24VDC output to the AISG bus will illuminate the +12V and +24V OUT LEDs. When AISG data is transmitted, the AISG1, AISG2, and/or AISG3 LEDs will illuminate (may appear to flash). The Ethernet connector on the right is where the user connects the PC using an Ethernet Crossover Cable. If a router is used at the cell site, the PCU can be connected via the Ethernet port and can be accessed remotely across the user LAN/WAN. The PCU will control up to 24 RETs. If more than 24 RETs are used at a site, multiple PCUs will be required. Contact your LAN Administrator for IP address mapping information.

In addition, you must enter the new PCU IP address at the Select PCU IP Address window.

Using the Time of Day Scheduler: The Time of Day Scheduler allows the user to use preset electrical downtilts at specified times during the day. The scheduler allows for four different tilt settings during a 24-hour period. To enable the time of day scheduler, check the Scheduler Enable box and enter the desired tilt settings and times into the fields in the Time Of Day Scheduler box. After all entries have been completed, click Save Changes button. This procedure will have to be done to each RET at the site if this is what is desired. Only one RET can operate at a time, so this will have to be taken into account as you are scheduling the tilt changes. You must exit the program to allow the scheduler to work. Changing the Password: The password to access the PCU User Interface software can be changed by clicking on the Change Password button. A pop-up window will appear requesting that you enter your new password. You will need to re-enter your new password and then click the OK button to make the change effective. Exit the program and your new password will be required to enter the PCU User Interface Software. You may change either the admin level password or the technician level password. After initial installation or after a tilt change at the site, it may be desirable to save the data for each RET. For PCU User Interface Software version 5.0, click the Save RET to Disk button for each RET in the table. Current tilt, address, and all Appendix D Data will be saved for each RET and you will need to repeat this step for each RET in the table. For PCU User Interface Software version 6.1, click the Save Data to File button, all Appendix D Data, the current tilts, and RET addresses for all RETs installed and all TMA parameters will be saved as a text file. You will be prompted for a filename and a location to save the file. This file is saved in a comma-delimited format, which also allows for easy importing into Excel or other similar spreadsheet-type programs. Checking Current on the AISG Bus Click the AISG button in the TMA box. Current is displayed in actual Current field for each of the three AISG channels. +12V and +24V readings are displayed in the AISG Power Status Box. If either voltage is out of spec, an RET Fault will be generated.

TMAs connected to the AISG bus In addition to providing power and control to the RETs, the PCU-200 provides output power and alarming for any manufacturers TMAs. The user may configure cabling to provide TMA power via the AISG channels using Smart Bias-Ts, or from the +12V Out To TMA connectors using +12V Dumb Bias-Ts. To set up the alarm parameters on the AISG powered TMAs, click the AISG button in the TMA Box. TMA descriptions can be entered into the fields for each channel. Because the RETs are connected on the same AISG bus as the TMAs, all site cabling to the TMAs and RETS must be in place to get accurate current measurements. Actual current is displayed for each AISG channel. Click Capture button and actual current reading is copied to the RET/TMA Expected field. Consult with TMA manufacturer to insert Alarm and +Alarm thresholds, which will generate alarm for + or the actual current reading, signifying a TMA fault. Click Save Changes button. Clone Data button is used to duplicate the same parameters for TMAs to all other AISG channels. Click Save Changes button after any changes are made. If a TMA goes into alarm, the virtual LED on the screen will turn red next to the TMA that causes the alarm condition. The TMA FAULT LED will illuminate and the TMA Alarm contact will energize.

VI. TROUBLESHOOTING THE CSS VARI-TILT ANTENNA SYSTEM The most predominant area of problems that is expected with a Vari-Tilt Antenna system is the lack of communications between the PCU and the RET. What to Check: 1. Connection between PCU and PC. 2. Connection between PCU and RET. 3. Improper AISG Cable Connection 4. PCU or RET 5. Missing Termination Plug on the last RET connected. 6. Over-tightened AISG Cable Connection may damage AISG connector. DO NOT USE A WRENCH TO TIGHTEN ANY AISG CABLE CONNECTOR. HAND TIGHT MEETS ALL WEATHERTIGHT REQUIREMENTS A. Improper connection between PCU and PC: 1. Verify the cabling from the power plant is correct into the PCU and verify input voltage is 18-60 VDC. 2. Verify the power plant breaker that feeds the PCU is ON. 3. Verify the LEDs are lit for the input voltage and for the +12V and +24V outputs. If these LEDs are not lit, and you have confirmed proper power into the PCU from the power plant, contact CSS Antenna to obtain a replacement PCU. 4. Verify that you have an Ethernet Crossover Cable connecting the PCU Ethernet connector to the PC Ethernet connector. The communication will not work without an Ethernet Crossover Cable. B. Improper connection between PCU and RETs: If the connection between the PCU and the RETs is correct, you will be able to communicate with every RET in the chain using the RET Roll Call function in the PCU User Interface software. If you are unsuccessful in communicating with all RETs, then the system must be troubleshot for connection problems. C. Improper AISG Cable Connection: Because of the daisy chain nature of the AISG cables in the network, it is imperative that you break down the network into smaller sub-sections to effectively troubleshoot the problem. Try breaking the network down to the sector level to communicate between the PCU and one sectors RETs. If a problem is found, correct the problem and re-try to communicate with the RETs from the PCU. Move on to the next sector daisy chained to the known working sector and re-try to communicate with the RETs from the PCU. Continue in this fashion until the problem is isolated and corrected. 1. If you cannot communicate with certain RETs, check to make sure that the AISG cables are connected properly into the PCU, Bias-Ts (where used), and into the first RET. Remove all AISG cables from the PCU and check the voltage at one of the three AISG connectors on the PCU. Verify the voltage at the PCU is +14.0VDC +/- 0.5V between pins 1 and 7. Also verify that the voltage is +24.0 VDC +/- 1V between pins 6 and 7. Refer to Figure 5 (AISG Connector Pin Out) for pin configuration when looking into the end of the connector. It is recommended that you use a voltmeter with thin probes to

2. If your network is equipped with Bias-Ts, remove the input AISG cable from the Bias-T and verify the voltage at the Bias-T input ASIG cable is +10-14.5VDC between pins 1 and 7. Refer to Figure 3 for pin configuration when looking into the end of the connector. If the voltage is +10-14.5 VDC between pins 1 and 7, and +21-24.0 VDC between pins 6 and 7, then proceed to step 3. If the voltage measurement is less than +10V, then contact CSS Antenna for a replacement AISG input cable. 3. If the Bias-T AISG cabling is not damaged or checks out OK, then proceed to troubleshooting the cabling at the first RET input. Remove the input AISG cable from the first RET. Verify the voltage at the first RET input ASIG cable is +10-14.5VDC between pins 1 and 7. Refer to Figure 3 for pin configuration when looking into the end of the connector. If the voltage measurement is +10-14.5 VDC, then proceed to step 4. If the voltage measurement is less than +10V, then contact CSS Antenna for a replacement AISG cable. 4. Proceed in the manner of checking the voltage at each RET input cable between pins 1 and 7 to verify +10-14.5 VDC. If this voltage level is present, continue working down the daisy chain to isolate the problem. Also continue to re-try communication efforts from the PCU.
