Dear Parishioners, Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing in those beautiful words of Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta I want to share with you all some information about my journey to the priesthood. As many of you know time flies and we dont realize how much time has passed. I still remember my first summer apostolate here at St. Albert the Great in 2009. While I was here I met wonderful people who love their priests and seminarian. Through my wonderful experience here at St. Albert the Great I decided to declare that that is my home parish. I am very proud of making this decision and I wanted to thank you for all of your support from the bottom of my heart. As time moves on in seminary and while I am getting closer to ordination to the priesthood, the seminary formation program has asked me to go to different parish for new ministerial experiences. I wanted to announce to the whole parish community that starting February 24 until May 25 I will be the seminarian Intern at St. Ferdinand Parish located on the North Side of Chicago. St. Ferdinand is a large bilingual (Polish/English) parish. This might be sad news, because I will not be able to be at St. Albert the Great every weekend like before. I will never forget about St. Albert and I will try to come once in a while to visit. Please pray for me and for all my brother seminarians in the Class of 2014 as we prepare to minister and pray with our new parishes. God Bless you. Seminarian Marek Smolka

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, in the streets of Rio and New Orleans and in the canals of Venice, Carnival reaches its height. We stand on the brink of Lenten discipline and order, of sacrifice and prayer, and like a diver for pearls, we take a deep breath of lifes abundance before immersing ourselves. Literally Good-bye to the Flesh, these once were days for clearing out the barnyard and having one last good roast before turning to fish, to eggs and cheese and porridges. In some places, masks and disguises are worn as a reminder that all falsehood must be stripped away in Lent and our true identity as the baptized must prosper. In others, the green, purple, and gold beads tossed in playful salute have their origins not only in the gifts of the magi, but also entwine the liturgical colors of Ordinary Time, Lent, and Easter. The message, sadly missed by many, is: embrace the Lenten journey, and find your life transformed. Dedicate the next few days to savoring lifes wonders, to the abundance of tables laden with great food and surrounded by the laughter of dear friends. Then, as you step forward to receive ashes on your brow, you will have already acquired a yearning for the renewing splash of Easters waters. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. FORGIVENESS OF SINS Isaiah announced the word of the Lord: [S]ee, I am doing something new! (Isaiah 43:19). And what was this new thing? A promise for a people who did not call upon me and grew weary of me (43:22); a promise of forgiveness. It is I, I, who wipe out . . . your offenses; / your sins I remember no more (43:25). Paul told the Corinthiansand tells us that Jesus is Gods yes, and that all Gods promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Does that include Gods promise to forgive sins? Mark gives the answer when he relates how some people lowered a paralytic through a hole in the roof, seeking a cure. As far as we can tell, no one requested forgiving the mans sins. But thats what Jesus did, exactly as Isaiah had announced. Then, lest anyone doubt his authority on earth to forgive sins, Jesus said, [P]ick up your mat, and go home (Mark 2:11). The man rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away (2:12). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
