In the race to become the Republican nominee for president to square off against Democrat and incumbent Barack Obama in the fall, front runner Mitt Money recovered from his three state loss last week, handily beating Rick Santorum and barely edging out Ron Paul in the election caucus in Maine. Romney won 39% of the votes, Senator Ron Paul won 36% of all votes, while Rick Santorum placed third with only 18%, a surprising reversal from his three sweep state and first place finish just last week. Santorums campaign was unable to exploit seeming momentum going into the Maine contest. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich came in last place scoring just 6% of the votes. Romney remains the Republican front runner in the contest, he leads all competitors with 123 delegates. Santorum has 72, Gingrich 32 and Ron Paul has 19. A total of 1,443 delegates are needed to become the Republican nominee. In addition to the win eked out in Maine, Romney also scored big in the important Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) poll by placing first. For the past two years Romney failed to receive their endorsement. The CPAC is widely viewed as a barometer of sentiments among conservatives, a likely indicator of how they plan to vote in the fall. 20% of CPACs members remain undecided concerning any particular candidate. Santorum, Gingrich and Paul have all attacked Romney for being left of conservative, trying to undercut Romneys own claims of being a true conservative. After scoring 38% of the CPAC votes, a result nearly identical his placing in the state caucus, a confident Romney told the media, I thank the voters of Maine for their

support, Im committed to turning around America and Im heartened to have the support of so many good people in this great state. Romney is widely considered to be the most electable of the four major Republican candidates left in the race. According to several opinion polls conducted with American voters, in a head to head competition against Obama, if the election were held today Romney would win by a few points over the president. 1.0v1 January 13, 2012 Kal K.
