SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE

One of the most powerful wetting agent and surface tension depressant available commercially and it is widely used by the textile, rubber, petroleum, paper, metal, paint, plastics and agricultural industries.

Summary of Chemical and Physical Properties:

Chemical name Molecular weight Apperance Ionic Structure Density(20C) Solubility in water

: Sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate : 444 gr/mol : Colorless to pale yellow clear viscous liquid : Anionic : 1.08 gr/cm3 : Trends to form a gel at 10% aqueous solution; gives a clear solution at 1%

Solubility in organic Solvents : Soluble in both polar and nonpolar organic solvents. It will dissolve quite readily in oils, hydrocarbons, fats, and waxes by heating above 75C, and it will not seperate upon cooling to room temperature. : Compatible with anionic and non-ionic products and will withstand small additions of acids and alkalis. Uneffected by hard water. Biodegradability : Completely biodegradable.

Surface Tension:

Although values for surface tension of solutions of surface active agents are one of more than theoretical interest, they are not always indicative of the wetting activity of the solution. The true indication of wetting power is the rapid establishment of a low interfacial tension between the wetting solution and the surface to be wetted.

Values for the surface tension of SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE**** in distilled water are given below:

Concentration of S. D. S. SUC.****(%) Surface Tension(Dyne/cm)(40C) 40,6 0,002 0,01 0,03 0,15 0,5 1,0 1,5 3,0 38,2 31,8 29,0 28,5 26,9 26,0 25,0 23,9

Action in Acids and Alkalis: SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is an ester and as such is subject to hydrolysis in strongly acid and strongly alkaline solutions. At room temperature, it is stable for all practical purposes between pH 1 and pH 10. It should be noted that the hydrolysis of the sulfosuccinate type of surface active agent actually can be used to advantage. For example, it sometimes is adventageous to develop rapid wetting action in a solution and then to destroy the surface activity.

Application areas:

Wetting agent for textile industry SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is a very rapid and efficient wetting agent, possesing very high wetting and penetration properties, even at low concentration, especially high speed. Eminently suited to continuous processes including continuous dyeing and printing of tufted carpet, and enzymatic desizing. Concentration of SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE required depends on application and substrate. Usually 0,3-2,0 g/l is sufficient.

Antifog Compositions for Application to cloth Special wiping cloths impregnated with SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE are used to clean ant to prevent fogging of eye glasses, automobile, train, plane and boat windshields.

The optimum amount of SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE to be left on the cloth is 40-50%, based on the weight of the cloth.

Antistatic agents SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE applied from and 0,7-1,5% isopropyl solution is an effective antistatic agent for polyvinyl phonograph records and other plastics.

Automotive Radiator Cleaners An effective radiator cleaner consist of a light petroleum fraction(kerosene) contaning 40% SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE.

Battery Seperators SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE have been used effectively to improve the wettability of synthetic battery seperators, which normally do not absorb water rapidly.

Emulsifying Waxes for Oil and Wax Polishes SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is an effective emulsifier for many waxes and oils in polishes and cosmetics. It frequently offers the advantage of operating economy in this use. SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is used at 1-10% based on the weight of the wax and oil.

Glass Cleaning SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is used for cleaning all types of glass surfaces. Liquid products can be formulated using SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE, water and a mutual solvent, such as a lower alcohol.

Mold Release Agents SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is reported to be an effective mold release agent in methyl methacrylate resins. It is dissolved in the styrene or in the methyl methacrylate at a range of 0,0150,15%.

Photography SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE is effectively used in a rinse for films before they are dried. It permits the films to drain evenly and prevents water-spotting, which is particularly troublesome when high speed drying ststems are used. The developed, fixed and washed films should be immersed in an 0,15% solution of SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE for about 30 seconds and then be allowed to

drain for about 30 seconds before being dried.

Wallpaper Removal Diluted with water by the user to a concentration of 0,035% SODIUM DIOCTYL SULPHO SUCCINATE, the solution is highly effective in soaking off old wallpaper, and often renders the use of an expensive and bulky steamer unnecessary.
