DISINFECTION POLICY Item Plastic-ware in contact with bacterial cultures Petri-dishes containing bacterial colonies Liquids e.g. culture supernatants etc Surfaces including benches and floors Minor surface contamination Larger spillage of bacterial cultures Virkon Concentration/ Decontamination Time autoclave 1% solution Autoclave bag Final concentration of 1% when liquid is added 1% solution 1% solution Granules Overnight fully immersed Autoclave: 121oC/30min At least 30 minutes, preferably overnight Wipe over 10 minutes 10 minutes
After disinfection, waste fluid may be poured down the laboratory sink with copious amounts of water. Plastic-ware soaked in Virkon should be rinsed in water and disposed of in clinical waste bags. Autoclaved material should be disposed of in clinical waste bags. NOTE: SOLUTION SHOULD BE MADE UP WHEN PINK COLOUR HAS FADED; LESS EFFICIENT ONCE COLOUR FADES
