Nikes Mission Statement and Responsibility

Posted on November 10, 2009 | 1 Comment

I researched the Nike website and found that it contains many statements and goals provided by the company. The first one I found said, Nike sees corporate responsibility as an integral part of how we can use the power of our brand, the energy and passion of our people, and the scale of our business to create meaningful change. The opportunity is greater than ever for corporate responsibility principles and practices to deliver business returns and become a driver of growth, to build deeper consumer and community connections and to create positive social and environmental impact in the world. I thought this was a well stated vision of their responsibilities to their consumers and to the world by the power that their company holds. Nike understands how big of a role they play in the market and wants to use their power for the good of the environment and world. They have many projects involved in the Amazon, Africa, schooling for underprivileged children in America, the homeless, going green, gender equality, abused females, and many other projects. Another statement I found states, When Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman made this observation many years ago, he was defining how he viewed the endless possibilities for human potential in sports. He set the tone and direction for a young company called Nike, and today those same words inspire a new generation of Nike employees. Our goal is to carry on his legacy of innovative thinking, whether to develop products that help athletes of every level of ability reach their potential, or to create business opportunities that set Nike apart from the competition and provide value for our shareholders. It started with a handshake between two visionary Oregonians Bowerman and his University of Oregon runner Phil Knight. They and the people they hired evolved and grew the company that became Nike from a US-based footwear distributor to a global marketer of athletic footwear, apparel and equipment that is unrivaled in the world. Along the way, Nike has established a strong Brand Portfolio with several wholly-owned subsidiaries including Cole Haan, Converse Inc., Hurley International LLC, NIKE Golf, and Umbro Ltd. Our world headquarters is located near Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. So while the Pacific Northwest is the birthplace to Nike, today we operate in more than 160 countries around the globe. Through our suppliers, shippers, retailers and other service providers, we directly or indirectly employ nearly one million people. That includes more than 30,000 Nike employees across six continents, each of whom make their own contribution to fulfill our mission statement: to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world.

That long statement summarizes the tone and objectives of Nike. It includes how globalized the company is stating that it operates in over 160 countries. I thought it was good to end with their final mission statement: to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete. I think Nike is a good global company to profile because it is involved in many projects and has a solid and inspiring mission statement. Nike is concerned with more than just their products and profit.

M.D. Anderson Cancer Centers Mission Statement

Posted on November 10, 2009 | Leave a comment

MI read an article on Newyorktimes.com about a company that has a very important mission statement. It was published on October 24, 2009 and the title is A Place Where Cancer is the Norm. The article, about M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, opens with the fact that every employee from top to bottom can state the centers mission statement. The statement is, eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation and the world. While this mission statement may differ from those of other corporations, it is extremely important and taken seriously. This center is the worlds largest freestanding cancer hospital serving up to 90,000 patients. The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center receives the most government cancer research money than any other hospital in the country. Medicare also covers more treatments to patients here. These are some reasons why patients can receive unheard of treatment methods while staying at this center. The building is so large with its color-coded hallways that it is described as a parallel universe. One of the doctors working for the M.D. Anderson Center says that he tells new doctors coming in the only limitation is imagination.

While the center is considered a hospital it is also very much a business that took their mission statement seriously from the beginning and became extremely successful by doing so. Any hospital in America or the world can become this successful. It seems this centers key is hiring the right employees who are going to strictly follow the companys main goal.

Starbucks mission statement

Posted on November 10, 2009 | Leave a comment

Starbucks is a well known coffee company throughout the world, and they keep their customers happy by sticking to their mission statement and principles. Starbucks goes by two mission statements, one is their everyday statement and the other one is directed to the environment. Their everyday mission statement is, To inspire and nature the human spirit one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. Their environmental mission statement is, Starbucks is committed to a role environmental leadership in all facets of our business. Starbucks has principles that are based off of their everyday mission statement that they live by every day. The first one is the quality of their coffee; they are passionate about finding the best quality coffee beans. They call each other partners because it is not just their job, it is their passion, and together they embrace their diversity which is another important part of their principles. Their customers are very important to their principles, and they are fully engaged in them because it is about human connection. Another important principle is the stores because when their customers feel the sense of belonging the stores become a haven. Every one of the stores is part of a community and this is why this is another important

principle to Starbucks. They want to be invited in wherever they do business. The final principles of the everyday mission statement are the shareholders to Starbucks. They are fully accountable to get each of these elements right so that Starbucks and everyone it touches can endure and thrive.

Starbucks also has special ways of successfully fulfilling their environmental mission statement. They understand the environmental issues and share information with their partners. They also develop innovative and flexible solutions to bring about change, and they strive to buy, sell and use environmentally friendly products. Starbucks encourage their partners to share in their mission.

These two mission statements and principles are why Starbucks is a successful and well known coffee company. Without a mission statement is like not having goals and with a mission or goals a company is not going to be successful especially if it is an international company, like Starbucks. In their mission statement they have principles that set them aside from other competitors because of their environmentally friendly product, customer service, and how they treat their employees. Without these strong mission statements Starbucks would not be the company that they are today.

Starbucks mission and statement goals

I decided to research the company of Starbucks and its mission statement and goals. Their mission statement is to inspire and nurture the human spirit- one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. Starbucks is committed to a role of environmental leadership in all facets of our business, is their environmental mission statement. It is obvious that the company has used their mission statement as a strategy to help their company grow internationally. Starbucks currently has over 4500 coffee houses in 47 different countries. They seek to be a global company, making a difference in peoples lives by leveraging their brand and the coffee experience to foster human connections. Although the company is spread out all over the world, they still like to think of themselves as one neighborhood. Their first international coffee house was in Tokyo in 1996 and since then Starbucks has been accepted globally in many international markets. Their development strategy adapts to different markets addressing the local needs and requirements. The companys international strategy includes a strong visibility of their brand, which has played a significant role. Also in their international business strategy is the choosing of international partners.

The company looks for partners who share the same values and commitment to bringing the Starbucks Experience to their customers worldwide. Some qualities they look for while choosing partners are strategic fit, sufficient financial and human resources, involved and committed top management, real estate knowledge and access, strong track record developing new ventures, and food and beverage experience. Also, Starbucks has a passion for quality. This passion affects their profits because their products hold the perfect quality that their valued customers look for.

Fords mission statement

Posted on November 10, 2009 | Leave a comment

For this weeks essay about mission statements and global/multi-domestic strategies, I have decided to write about Ford motor company. Ford is a multi-domestic company, with a large product line up that varies by country, taking into account cultural differences and regional necessity. The sources that I have gathered are mission statements, basically used to convey to prospective employees what Ford is all about. Ford is spelling out its future goals, as well as what is expected of its employees. The One Ford website says that Ford has four plans for the future. The first is to aggressively restructure to operate profitably at current demand changing model mix. Indeed within the past few years, Ford has added (and taken away) several models, and redesigned even more. With the current economy, demand for new automobiles is lower than in previous years, and Ford has had to lay off many workers, to remain profitable. The second one says that they want to accelerate the development of new products our customers want and value. The third plan is to finance (their) plan, and improve (their) balance sheet. The fourth and final plan, is to work together effectively as one team. All of these plans tell customers and potential employees what Ford expects from itself and its staff. Their main goal is to have an exciting viable Ford delivering profitable growth for all. Meaning, they want not only themselves to benefit from their business, but also their customers, employees, unions, investors, and community.

From my personal experience I can say that Ford is one of the leading automotive companies in the United States and abroad, due to their new lineup of fresh, interesting looking vehicles. Ford is one of the least likely American big three automotive companies to go bankrupt because of this. Coming to Europe, I was very surprised to see as many Ford vehicles and I have. GM and Chrysler would do well to take a note out of Fords book.

Coca-Cola mission statement

Posted on November 10, 2009 | Leave a comment

This week I found information on The Coca-Cola company from their website www.thecocacolacompany.com. The Coca-Cola mission statement declares the companys purpose and serves as the standard in which actions and decisions are made, and includes three parts. Coca-Colas mission is to refresh the world, to inspire moments of optimism and happiness, and to create value and make a difference. The Coca-Cola vision statement guides every aspect of the business by describing what needs to be accomplished in order to continue achieving sustainable, quality growth. Coca-Colas vision statement includes People: Be a great place to work where people are inspired to be the best they can be, Portfolio: Bring to the world a portfolio of quality beverage brands that anticipate and satisfy peoples desires and needs, Partners: Nurture a winning network of customers and suppliers, together we create mutual, enduring value, Planet: Be a responsible citizen that makes a difference by helping build and support sustainable communities. Profit: maximize long-term return to shareowners while being mindful of our overall responsibilities, and Productivity: Be a highly effective, lean and fastmoving organization.

Coca-Colas value statement serves as a compass for their actions and describes how the company behaves in the world. The value statement includes Leadership: The courage to shape a better future, Collaboration: Leverage collective genius, Integrity: Be real, Accountability: If it is to be, its up to me, Passion: Committed in heart and mind, Diversity: As inclusive as our brands, and Quality: What we do, we do well. Coca-Cola Company also has a company focus on sustainability. Live Positively is Coca-Colas platform for sustainability and is Coca-Colas commitment to make a positive difference in the world by redesigning the way we work and live so sustainability is part of everything we do. Coca-Cola is reaching across borders through collaboration and partnership to connect and change, is using optimism to stir hope, build solutions, create possibilities, and touch communities across the globe, and with their actions change can be inspired in the world now and in the next generation.

I think that the Coca-Cola Company did very well in defining the mission, values, and vision of the company in all of their statements. I was very impressed with all of the focus on making a difference in the world, and their sustainability program called Live Positively. It is reassuring to know that huge companies like Coca-Cola who have a presence throughout the world are concerned with environmental issues and focus on recycled packaging, reducing emission of green house gases in their production processes, inspire a diverse work force, and promote living an active, healthy lifestyle by offering a wide variety of beverages. Reading about all of the Coca-Cola Companys efforts to make the production of their product as environmentally friendly as possible at this time made me respect the direction the company is moving in, and made me interested to see what further changes they will make in the future in regards to packaging materials, and other sustainable ideas they are working with.

Ben and Jerrys Mission Statement

Posted on November 11, 2009 | Leave a comment

Ben and Jerrys is an international ice cream company that was started in Burlington, Vermont in 1978. They are now located all across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. There Mission Statement is made up of three parts, a social mission, and product mission, and an economic mission.

The social mission states that they want to organize a company that understands the responsibility business has in society and find creative ways to progress the quality of life locally, nationally, and internationally. Their product mission states that they will make, sell, and distribute the best quality product that uses natural ingredients while respecting the environment. The economic part of the mission says that they will manage the finances with a sustainable model that is profitable and has increasing value and expanding opportunities. The mission continues to talk about its progressive ideals that look to meet human needs. They will do this by focusing on children and families as well as the environment and sustainable agriculture. There company goals are minimize waste, use sustainable and safe methods of food production, achieve peace and justice, and create economic opportunities for people who can not achieve them.

This companys mission statement is definitely being followed. They are doing what they can to protect the environment and help the communities in which they are located. I respect the ideas that this company is striving for and appreciate the efforts they are putting in to create a sustainable and fair trade business.

Is the Walmart Mission Statement a Good One!

The Walmart Mission Statement is "to help people save money so they can live better." Way back in the early 90's as set by the founder Sam Walton it was to "become a $125 billion company by the year 2000" but Sam's idea for his stores is really captured in the first statement above. The second statement is more a SMART goal. Click here to read more Sam Walton quotes and thoughts Walmart or Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. now serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at more than 8,000 retail units under 53 different banners in 15 countries. With sales of $401 billion, Walmart employs more than 2.1 million associates worldwide. It is a leader in sustainability, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity. A mission statement states why the company is in business and how they will conduct their business - what they stand for. It should really address 'What are they going to do for their customers and stakeholders - suppliers, employees, and communities.' It defines the companies purpose. Does the current Walmart Mission statement comply with these guidleines. Let's see? It provides the criteria to help make better business decisions as it clearly states what business your in and why. It should potentially cover a number of aspects depending what is relevant to the company's position at the time. Beliefs or Values, Moral and Ethical stance Who are the customers What are the major markets/products/services Major Competitive advantages Growth, Survival and Profitability expectations What are the major products/services Geographic Spread

As of 2008, Walmarts identified three major issues that are important at present to the company and the world under their broad mission statement "to help people save money so they can live better."

The three major issues are: health care energy efficiency ethical sourcing.

They have transformed these issues into broad objectives that they wish to achieve are as follows: 1. Making Quality Health Care More Affordable and Accessible 2. Reducing Energy Costs for Our Customers 3. Ethical and environmentally responsible sourcing around the world, including China As you can see it covers several of the aspects of a mission statement above. For each of these broad objectives they have specific goals with timelines and for each goal the strategies on they are going to achieve these goals. Objectives, goals and strategies should all be consistent with the mission statement. Is this Walmart mission statement a good one? It certainly not only addresses the customer's needs but that of their employees and communities around the world. Note their is not much mention of shareholders and profits now.

The Mission Statement, Global Vision, and Values of Apple, Inc. It was widely reported that a famous quote from Steve Jobs in the 1980's was the Apple company mission statement: "Man is the creator of change in this world. As such he should be above systems and structures, and not subordinate to them." The "official" mission statement on the Apple corporation website, however, is not really a mission statement at all, but rather a list of products and past accomplishments. As stated, Apple's "mission" is "Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices." The Mission Statement and Purpose of Panera Bread Restaurants (PNRA) The published mission statement of the Panera Bread Restaurant Chain is: "A loaf of bread in every arm." Because of its narrow focus on one product the Panera Bread mission statement falls short it in its ability to guide employees at any level in their daily operations, interactions, and decision-making. Perhaps to further clarify things, Panera also publishes its "bread leadership goal": "With the single goal of making great bread broadly available to consumers across America, Panera Bread freshly bakes more bread each day than any bakery-cafe concept in the country." Again the narrow focus on its product, rather than the overall philosophy, experience, or any type of overarching purpose, the Panera Bread company mission statement falls short.

Barnes & Noble Mission Statement: "Our mission is to operate the best specialty retail business in America, regardless of the product we sell. Because the product we sell is books, our aspirations must be consistent with the promise and the ideals of the volumes which line our shelves. To say that our mission exists independent of the product we sell is to demean the importance and the distinction of being booksellers. "As booksellers we are determined to be the very best in our business, regardless of the size, pedigree or inclinations of our competitors. We will continue to bring our industry nuances of style and approaches to bookselling which are consistent with our evolving aspirations. "Above all, we expect to be a credit to the communities we serve, a valuable resource to our customers, and a place where our dedicated booksellers can grow and prosper. Toward this end we will not only listen to our customers and booksellers but embrace the idea that the Company is at their service."
