Title: A research on Mobile Lives of todays Multimedia Universitys student 1.0. Introduction Previously our smartphone that can we seen at the market is only we can use for calling and even we can use it as a radio. Besides, the smartphone will have a small LCD screen and also a keypad after the LCD screen. But now the smartphone we can see now in the market is fully touch screen and features a larger screen without keypad and its also advanced capabilities such as Web access and e-mail; runs complete operating system software and can run various apps created by third parties; and features a faster processor than standard mobile phones. Besides, the students today is also keep chasing for the new and advanced smartphone. So our purposes of this research is to identify the student preference among the mobile brands and also to investigate the most frequent location where students use their smartphones other than only for voice calling. 1.1. Background The mobile phone was originally created for adults for business use (Aoki &Downes, 2003). But nowadays most of the people especially students whose buy mobile mostly is because of its function and most of them keeping update with the advance technology mobile phone. The growth of mobile phone technology is demonstrated by the fact that in 2002 the number of mobile phone users worldwide, surpassed those of fixed-phone users (Srivastava, 2005). It has been predicted that by the end of 2005, the number of mobile phone subscribers worldwide will reach 2 billion (Deloitte Research, 2005) and in Australia will reach 19.2 million (Fisher, 2005). Besides, nowadays mobile is not only for voice calling but also for people to text messaging unobtrusively. The functionality of SMS lets students send and receive messages unobtrusively (Geser, 2004). Surveys have consistently shown that young people even prefer their mobile phone to television or the Internet (Enpocket, 2005; Hession, 2001). It is seen as a fashion accessory that satisfies the need for individualisation by having choices in mobile wallpaper, ring tones, phone covers, carry bags and other accessories (Srivastava, 2005) and yet also signifies being part of the peer group (Williams & Williams, 2005). As all social life is based on ongoing interpersonal interaction, the fixed telephone has been an essential instrument to enable young people to organise their social life (Manceron, 1997). In a New Zealand study 56% of high school students reported that the most important

reason for using a mobile phone was to talk and text with friends (Netsafe, 2005). Besides, most of the people also using mobile phone to watch latest news; reading text in a mobile phone may be difficult andtext legibility is one of the biggest challenges of recoded TV news content (Knoche2005, Knoche&Sasse 2006).More generally, however, the recommendation is to stream the text information separately to the device. (Knoche&Sasse 2006). 1.2. Term of reference These researches are to study a Mobile Lives of todays by students in Multimedia University Melaka Campus. The report was requested on 6 January 2012.
