Q. 1 An enclosures contain Helium at a pressure of 1.3 atm and has two vertical heating surfaces, which are maintained at 80 and 20 oC respectively. The vertical surfaces are 40x40 cm and are separated by a gap of 2cm. Calculate the free convection heat transfer between the vertical surfaces. (7.72, pp. 359) [5M] Two parallel planes 1.2x1.2 are separated by a distance of 1.2 m. the emissivitys of the planes are 0.4 and 0.6, and the temperature are 760 and 300 oC, respectively. A 1.2x1.2 radiation shield having an emissivity of 0.05 on both side located equidistance between the two planes. The combined arrangement is placed in a large room which is maintained at 40 oC. (a) Calculate heat transfer rate from each of the two planes if the shield were not present. (b) Calculate heat transfer rate from each of the two planes if the shield were present. (c) Temperature of the shield. (8.62, pp. 467) [10M] A horizontal tube having a 1.25 cm outside diameter is submerged in a water 1 atm and 100 oC. Calculate the heat flux for the surface temperature of (a) 540 oC, (b) 650 o C, and (c) 800 oC. Assume =0.8? (9.50, pp.510) [5M] Calculate the Heat Transfer Coefficient for the forced convection local boiling of water at 5 atm in a vertical tube. The temperature excess is 10 oC. (9.55, pp. 511) [5M] 30,000 lb/hr of mixture whose average properties correspond to hexane is vaporized from 40,000 lb/hr of feed at its bubble point at 105 psig. The boiling range is from 300 to 350 oF, and heat supplied by steam at 398 oF. Available for the service is a 19 in. ID, 1-2 exchanger containing 132 1 in. OD, 14 BWG, 1600 long tube arranged for tube passes on 1 in. square pitch. Shell baffles are spaced 12 in. a part. What is the dirt factor and the pressure drops? (15.2, pp. 508, D.Q Kern) [15M] A shell-and-tube Heat exchanger with one shell pass and two tube passes si to be designed to condense 3900 kg/hr of steam at 1 atm. Steam may be assume to enter the shell side as a saturated vapor and leave as a saturated liquid. Water is used as cooling fluid in tubes with an inlet temperature of 40 oC. Consider over heat transfer coefficient values from Table:10.1, Determine a suitable design which specifies (a)Number of tubes in each pass,(b) outlet water temperature, (c) tube diameter and length in each tube pass, and (d) mass flow rate of water and final inside diameter of the shell that may required. A gas-phase exothermic reaction is carried out in a multi-tube reactor with the catalyst in 1-inch. Tubes and boiling water in the jacket. The feed temperature and the jacket temperature are 240 oC. The average reactor temperature rises to 250 oC a short distance from the inlet and then gradually decreases to 241 oC at the reactor exit. The resistance to heat transfer is about equally divided between the bed and the film at the wall. If the tube diameter were increased to 1.5 in. with the same catalyst, what should the jacket temperature be to keep the peak reactor temperature at 250 oC? Sketch the temperature profiles for the two cases. What pressure steam would be generated for the two cases?(15.12, pp. 461, McBe & smith) [15M] List the different Heat transfer equipment involved in your plant. Also explain the governing principle or modes of heat transfer for each equipment that listed. Calculate the Heat transfer area for any heat exchanger which is listed in your plant equipment with help of process data sheet or from actual plant data. [10M] It is desired to concentrate a NaOH solution from 12.5 % to 40% in a double effect evaporator. 50,000 lb/hr of feed solution enters the evaporator at 120 oF, and steam at 15 psig is available for effecting the concentration. Vacuum in the 2nd effect is held at 24in. Hg, and water from a cooling tower is available at 85 oF. Estimate (a) quantity of feed and water require for the forward feed operation, (b) quantity of feed and condenser water require for the backward feed operation, (c) Surface require for the operation in (a), assuming U is 400 and 250 Btu/hr(ft 2) (oF) for the first and second effect respectively. UD equal to 450 and 350 in two effects respectively. (14.1, pp. 450, D.Q. Kern) [15M]

Q.10 In a catalytic cracking regenerator catalyst particle at 600 oC are injected in to air at 700 oC in a fluidized bed. Neglecting the chemical reaction, how long will it take for a 50 micron meter to be heated to within 5 oC of the air temperature? Assume the heat transfer coefficient is the same as for a spherical particle falling at its terminal velocity. (12.12, page 386, McBe and Smith) [10M] ***************
