Each year, The Arc Mercer works tirelessly to improve upon the quality programming we oer consumers and their support systems. As you will see as you read through this report, we have enhanced our operations across the board during 2010, focusing on programs and services that build on our strengths and where the need is greatest. At The Arc Mercer, we will continue to make strides with the invaluable services we oer.

The Arc Mercer received an unqualified audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30,2011. It was noted that The Arc Mercer has decreased its reliance on Governmental sources of revenue primarily due to increases in business services revenue.

ARC MERCERS HEALTH CARE CENTER OPENED ITS DOORS IN JUNE 2011. THE FULL SERVICE FACILITY OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES FROM PHYSICIANS AND MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO THE ARC MERCER AS WELL AS TO RESIDENTS OF MERCER COUNTY.

Offering a wide range of programs is important to The Arc Mercer's success, but ensuring quality is critical. Our Quality Assurance Division makes sure we keep the focus on quality in everything we do. The division is headed by former FBI agent Wayne Girardet, whose expertise led to the creation of the Critical Incident Reporting System. This updates all stakeholders about incidents and gives them an opportunity to join our eorts to maintain the highest possible standards of quality. Families are central to the success of what we do at The Arc Mercer. They provide support and encouragement to their loved ones in our programs and help guide our eorts as well. Our Family Advisory Committee, made up of family members, oversees our quarterly informational meetings and our quality control eorts. Surveys and a proactive family outreach eort are core to how we communicate with our families.

I 2012 NonGovernment Funding The Arc Mercer constantly strives to oer the cutting-edge in terms of programs. Over the past year alone, we have added new programs and systems in every department to better serve those with developmental disabilities and their families. We believe that our focus on the consumer, our commitment to ongoing improvement and our steadfast dedication to helping consumers progress and improve upon their skills, sets us apart and points toward an innovative and successful future.

Three behavioral specialists create individual behavioral plans that help consumers reach their highest possible level of achievement. This has contributed to a decrease in the use of prescription medications. Along with newly initiated psychiatric services, including medication monitoring and therapy, our consumers are presented with new opportunities to develop the skills needed to express their wants, needs and desires in a healthy, constructive manner.

The Arc Mercers eet of 56 vehicles logs thousands of miles every day and provides more than 166,000 one-way passenger trips every year. Arc Trans supports our programs with quality transportation. Every one of our drivers receives safety training and strictly adheres to NJ Department of Transportation standards. The Arc Mercer has an array of options in vocational training, all with the goal of progression in mind. We focus on skill exploration in larger groups, skill development in smaller groups, job placement in many of our businesses and finally, placement into a community setting. Once consumers decide whether to pursue a career track, they have the opportunity to move into one of our business enterprises:

Janitorial Services

Touch of Taste Catering

The Arc Mercer boasts the only full-service catering and training program in Mercer County. Our consumers work side-by-side with trained professionals to learn skills such as food preparation, baking, serving and proper sanitation techniques. They gain valuable experience by helping to prepare more than 200 meals daily for Meals on Wheels.

Fulfillment Services

If its fulllment services you need, youve come to the right place. The Arc Mercer provides approximately 1 million units of fulllment services every year and oers NAID-accredited shredding services, bulk mail and packaging, all done at our Occupational Training Facility. Working in this area helps prepare our consumers for an external job opportunity while they earn a paycheck.

Landscaping

Our vocational consumers are blossoming in a new program that teaches landscaping and horticulture. Working together with in-house sta, our consumers maintain the grounds at all 20 of our properties and perform 50 percent of the seasonal work.

AT STEP AHEAD, OUR PROGRAMS AIM TO MAXIMIZE EVERY CHILD'S POTENTIAL IN A NUMBER OF AREAS, INCLUDING SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, LANGUAGE AND COGNITION.

The Arc Mercer provides professional cleaning services for more than 2.5 million sq. ft. of oce space every year, with a workforce made up primarily of people with disabilities. Through the ACCSES-NJ CNA Services program, The Arc Mercer has expanded the opportunities open to its consumers and has placed many in jobs throughout the community. Work does so much more than provide a paycheck participating in this program gives our consumers the opportunity to build their confidence and gain a greater level of independence, as well as learn skills necessary to progress to regular employment in this eld.

Step Ahead Early Childhood Learning Center

Step Ahead, licensed by Division of Youth and Family Services, oers early intervention to children up to age 3. Our teachers and aides are trained to implement the family support plan and have tremendous success at ensuring our children excel. In addition to our excellent stang ratio, we are proud that almost a third of our teachers and aides have been with us for more than 30 years.

Day Programs
Arc Mercer day programming gives consumers the opportunity to pursue non-vocational interests to enhance their quality of life. Fine art, music, horticulture and jewelry making are just some of the programs designed to encourage progression and personal development. Larger groups explore common interests, smaller groups work toward cultivating their skills and one-on-one training supports individual growth.

Programs for Progression

When it comes to helping individuals reach their highest potential, The Arc Mercers programs are structured for success. By setting eective life goals for independence and sharing goal completion with families, we help consumers progress to their highest possible level of independence. Whether its living more independently in a group home or supervised apartment, developing skills for job placement or enjoying some down time with peers, our programs provide opportunities for growth, improvement.and progress. The Arc Mercer also provides essential support through centralized medical, behavioral and transportation units that work in tandem with our programs to ensure seamless services. And, in 2011, we launched our own Health Care Center to provide doctors, psychiatrists and other signicant medical support not only to The Arc Mercer, but to the entire Mercer County community as well. A number of systems are in place to help ensure the quality of our programs and services: superior tracking and reporting functions, an active Family Support Advisory Committee, stakeholder surveys and quarterly consumer report cards. Theres no question about it everything we do at The Arc Mercer is rooted in our commitment to Progress and Opportunity.

Residential
With 10 group homes, four supervised apartment complexes and more than 35 individual apartments, The Arc Mercers Residential Program gives more than 130 residents the opportunity to develop and refine the skills needed to live more independently. By setting effective Individual Habilitation Plan (IHP) goals for independence and sharing track goal completion with families, we help consumers progress to their highest possible level of independence.

Recreation/Respite

These programs oer a chance to enjoy some down time through a variety of activities: monthly trips, dances and an array of weekly activities.

Horticulture

Local horticultural enthusiasts join with our consumers to teach them gardening skills.

Celesta Baier has made great progress with the goals set in her IHP and has been living in an Arc Mercer group home since 2009. Celesta, shown with her husband Scott Baier, has mastered the cleaning part of the program and continues to work on cooking skills and matching her clothing. But she is striving to reach her goal of moving into her own apartmentand we have no doubt shell be there soon.

Music

This regionally renowned Music Program strikes a chord for any level of musical interest listening, learning to play an instrument or participating in a musical group. It was recently recognized in a front page article in The Times of Trenton and later cited in an editorial in that newspaper for its innovative approach.

Art

An interest in art is nurtured through arts and craft projects, working with a small group to experiment and dabble in a new eld or taking lessons one-on-one with local artists.

Sports

Through Special Olympics as well as our own programs, consumers learn about and participate in a variety of sports. Athletes of all skill levels enjoy basketball, quoits, even biathlons and triathlons, just to name a few.
