ACS Cobham High School English English 9 Scheme of Work

Our Philosophy We believe our English programme should be: student-centred ready to meet the needs of all students admitted to the school up-to-date and relevant to contemporary educational contexts enjoyable and motivating for our students based on high standards of achievement and performance. Strands and Objectives Six strands run through our High School English courses, within each of which we seek to develop a number of core objectives. 1. Textual Understanding and Analysis Students will learn to understand and analyse a wide variety of written and oral texts in from different periods, styles and genres develop their understanding of how writers and speakers choices are influenced by audience, purpose, text type and context develop their understanding of the relationship of form and content in texts develop their knowledge of persuasive and rhetorical strategies in speech and writing develop an interest in and enjoyment of language and literature appreciate and understand the literary traditions of English speaking cultures but remain open to the

perspectives, values and traditions of other communities

2. Textual Process Students willDevelop effective skills and habits for producing written and oral texts. These will include Note taking Organising class materials Brainstorming and generating ideas Finding and using evidence Planning/Outlining Drafting Editing Understanding and applying assessment criteria

Textual Production Written Students will develop their abilities to write effectively in a wide variety of contexts and genres think critically and construct coherent arguments based on well-chosen evidence express themselves in writing clearly and effectively for a wide range of audiences and purposes
