What to Expect in First Couple of Days Your new Win 7 laptop may behave a little slow and sluggish at times for the first day or two. Here is why Outlook downloading messages to be cached for offline use Items on disk being indexed for faster search Disk being backed up for the first time Disk being encrypted. Please note that depending on the amount of data transferred, it may take a day or two for the disk to be completely encrypted. Additional software and patches being downloaded and installed in the background

Please try to keep your laptop connected to the network (either in office or through VPN) and restart it every day for the first few days. This ensures that the above network-dependent activities can successfully complete in the shortest time possible.

McAfee McAfee is the new end-point protection software that replaces Symantec AV and Checkpoint Integrity Firewall. Your laptop has the following McAfee components installed: Virus/Malware Scan (VSE/ASE) o On Access Scan (Real Time Scan) o Daily Quick Scan around noon o Weekly Full Scan around noon on Wednesdays o Quarantined email attachments can be found in the Quarantine folder in Outlook. For example, McAfee automatically quarantines attachment with multiple periods in the filename. Use care when opening attachments in the Quarantine folder ensure that you know the sender and you are expecting the attachment. Host Intrusion Protection (HIPS) which includes Firewall o Most used applications have already been added to the firewall o Minor version upgrades for most applications don't require firewall updates o Run C:\ITDocs\export_fwlogs.bat to export firewall logs if applications are blocked Endpoint Encryption (EE) o All local disks are encrypted by default o Transparent to users o No degradation in performance Site Advisor Enterprise (SAE) o Helps to identify risky sites o User should enable this add-on in Internet Explorer Data Loss Protection and Device Control Software (DLP) o Future security enhancement o Only test policies enabled for test

Full Disk Encryption Your new Win 7 laptop has McAfee full disk encryption enabled. This is an extra security measure to protect against loss or theft. Normally full disk encryption taxes system resources and degrades system performance but because of the overall hardware and software improvements, you would not notice any performance degradation. Also, McAfee full disk encryption works in the background, is nonintrusive, and you dont have to do anything special to use it other than the first time setup.

After you received your new laptop, McAfee works in the background to encrypt the entire SSD. This initial encryption process may take a few hours to a couple of days depending on the amount of data you have and how often you use your laptop McAfee only uses idle system resource and not compete with what you are actively doing. You can tell that McAfee has completed the initial encryption process when you restart your laptop and be presented with a McAfee logon screen for the first time. It is very important that you perform the following steps the first time that you see the McAfee logon screen unless McAfee has finished encryption and your tech has completed these steps for you: 1. At the user name prompt, enter your regular Windows user name. 2. At the password prompt, enter qwerty! without the quotes. 3. You will be prompted to enter and confirm a new password. Enter your regular Windows password. Please be sure to double check that this password matches what you normally use to logon Windows. After this 3-step one-time setup, every time you startup your laptop, you only need to enter your regular Windows user name and regular Windows password. No other credential is required to decrypt data. Access to Rambus File Servers/Shares Access to Rambus File Servers/Shares is now available via a Shortcut/Folder Rambus Shares on your desktop. Access to these shares via the Network Icon on the Desktop or My Computer is not supported anymore. Click on the Rambus Shares folder to explore/access different file servers for all sites. These share locations can also be accessed via a new location (For \\rambus.com\hq for Sunnyvale shares, \\rambus.com\nc for NC shares etc..) Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Resume You will notice shorter wait time during normal startup and shutdown compared to your previous Win XP laptop. This is due to improved hardware and software components. Win 7 also features a much more robust sleep and resume function. You can reliably put your laptop to sleep which allows quick resumption in seconds. We recommend that you use sleep instead of shutdown for everyday use of your laptop. To put your laptop to sleep, do either one of the following 1. Press the power button 2. Press the sleep button (the key with the crescent moon icon): typically Fn-F1 on Dell laptop keyboards 3. Close the lid when the laptop is not on A/C power this can be changed (see next section) 4. Select Sleep from the shutdown menu:

To resume your laptop from sleep, press the power button. Here are some best practices During sleep, your laptop memory is maintained by battery power. If there is a mechanical failure, e.g. loose battery contacts, your laptop will not be able to resume and will have to be restarted. Therefore, its a good practice to save all open files before putting your laptop to sleep. You can leave most applications running (including Outlook) and there is generally no need to actually close open files. While Win 7 sleep and resume functions should be used in place of normal startup and shutdown, try periodically rebooting your laptop by selecting Restart in the shutdown menu. Restart flushes memory and reloads drivers. Restart is also needed for system patches that IT pushes out to laptops in the background. Please restart at least once every two weeks. Customize Power Options Prefer a different power setting or what the power buttons and the laptop lid do? Customize them using Control Panels Power Options! Control Panel is located in the Windows Start Menu the bottom left-most button on the task bar. Click Power Options in Control Panel to reach this screen for customizations:

Wheres the Show Desktop Button? Want to see your desktop without minimizing all open windows? Use Show desktop button. Its the bottom right-most button on the task bar next to the time and date display. Hover your mouse pointer on top of it to peek at the desktop or click on it to minimize all open windows at once.

Use Snipping Tool to Capture Screen Shots You can use Snipping Tool to capture a screen shot, or snip, of any object on your screen, and then annotate, save, or share the image. You can find Snipping Tool in Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories.

You can capture any of the following types of snips: Free-form Snip. Draw a free-form shape around an object. Rectangular Snip. Drag the cursor around an object to form a rectangle. Window Snip. Select a window, such as a browser window or dialog box, that you want to capture.

Full-screen Snip. Capture the entire screen.

After you capture a snip, it's automatically copied to the Clipboard and the mark-up window. From the mark-up window, you can annotate, save, or share the snip.

Windows Help Windows 7s built-in help and support system has a wealth of information designed to get you started and to help you navigate day-to-day tasks in Windows. To access, go to Start Menu -> Help and Support. Follow on-screen instructions to search for a topic or browse for answers. You will be surprised at how useful it is.

Connect to Home Wireless Network (WiFi) It is easy to connect your new Windows 7 laptop to your home wireless network or to another WiFi hotspot while you are traveling. Click on the network connections icon located near the clock display on the task bar. Select the hotspot that you would like to connect to. Click connect.

When prompted, enter the security key for the hotspot that you are connecting to:

Remote Access Rambus Network (VPN) To access Rambus network from home or from other locations, you can use the new and improved VPN client, Cisco AnyConnect. 1. Ensure that you have a working Internet connection. 2. Find the Remote Access menu on the task bar, click >> arrow, and select Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. 3. Click Connect:

Add Network Printers Parked in a conference room and want to print to a nearby printer? Simply enter \\print in the Search programs and files dialog box in the Start menu. You will be presented with a list of available network printers. Double click on the one that you prefer and allow printer driver installation to complete and

select it as your default printer. You can now print to the new printer. You can also add printers by clicking on C:\ITDocs\AddSVPrinters.qds to view and add printers in SV.

Multiple Outlook Windows Want to multi-task in Outlook? Try opening multiple Outlook windows one for email, another one for calendar, etc. Right click on the running Outlook icon on the task bar to bring up the following menu. Click Microsoft Outlook 2010 to open a new Outlook Window. You may repeat this several times to open several Outlook windows.

Bluetooth Mouse Disconnecting If your Bluetooth mouse disconnects from time to time and doesnt reconnect, try disabling a powersaving feature. Go to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Bluetooth -> Dell -> Power Management and turn off the button "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
