Setting a New Standard

With the smart grid comes unparalleled opportunity to transform the energy industryto refine the way that electricity and natural gas are generated, delivered and used. Better energy management, more informed consumers, increased automation and improved conservation efforts will all converge to help make the smart grid a success. OpenWay by Itron is a highly adaptable, openarchitecture smart grid and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution designed to propel the transformation of the energy industry. OpenWay is a new generation of technology built to meet the significantly broader set of advanced metering, communication, control and smart grid requirements that many utilities are facing today and that will continue to develop in the years to come. With millions of meters solving a variety of business cases for multiple utilities, OpenWay sets the standard for smart grid and AMI effortsboth in form and functionfor the entire industry. Why OpenWay is Better Boasting an innovative and integrated design, OpenWay was built with a commitment to open standards, affording utilities the freedom to evolve their technology over time. After all, innovation will play a critical role in the grids success and many of the technologies that will drive the smart grid have yet to be developed. OpenWay interoperates with solutions from other vendors to best meet a utilitys unique needs, such as utilizing security experts to protect the OpenWay network. Utilities can purchase the system with confidence knowing their investment wont be stranded.

OpenWay by Itron: Advanced Metering Defined Fundamentally, smart grid and advanced AMI initiatives require advanced two-way communications, especially with the use of smart devices. This enables utilities to meet their business needs for meter data collection, empowers all customers to actively and frequently participate in demand response and energy conservation, and supports the evolution of tools and technology that will drive the smart grid. To meet these requirements, OpenWay by Itron provides: > Open-standards architecture to enable true interoperability among systems, flexibility in communications choices, and future innovations from third-party technology providers for smart grid and AMI-related applications. > Two-way communication to every meter to enable advanced control capabilities as well as remote device configuration and firmware updates. > Wireless in-home networking for demand response and load control installed in all meters and ready to connect with smart thermostats, smart appliances, in-home displays and load control devices. > Advanced service switch for remotely connecting, disconnecting and limiting service. > Positive outage notification and restoration verification. > Data management separate from network management. OpenWay integrates with Itron Enterprise Edition Meter Data Management, setting the foundation for the utility to provide its customers with much more granular energy use data on a timelier basis.

How OpenWay Works

A Network for the Future OpenWay provides a flexible, high-performance network architecture that is smart yet simple, easy to install, easy to maintain and requires little or no network infrastructure. Complete Communications Flexibility At its core, the smart grid is a network of networks supporting multiple applications. It will span several systems of various capabilities and capacities working in harmony to deliver the intelligent energy needed for the future. OpenWay supports this by utilizing multiple transport technologies (RF, BPL, PLC, IP) so virtually any network can be seamlessly integrated to deliver the best combination of reliability, security and cost effectiveness. OpenWay remains independent of any particular communications technology by fully supporting the ANSI C12.22 protocol for transport of device data over networks. OpenWay also supports the ANSI C12.19 protocol, which helps define the structure of transported data throughout the network.
