ELS ELOIS- ENGLISH

It is the old trade that the brotherhood of Els Elois celebrated and organized in Berga. The first celebration of the trade was in 1379. The brotherhood of Els Elois was formed by carriers, blacksmiths, silversmiths, nailsmiths, cobblers, millers and the majority of traders of the time. The trade was very large and the festivities that they organized had a lot of importance for the people that helped to organize them. All brotherhood had a saint because they were religious. The saint of the brotherhood of Els Elois was Saint Eloi. He was the patron saint of more trades and for this reason he was chosen the saint of this trade. The Elois festivity was celebrated in more populations because the trades were held in more places. Elois were celebrated in Berga, but also in Prats de Lluans, Ripoll and Campdevnol. This celebration was based on doing different rides along the city with the best galas and mounts.

Information of Plaa de la Font del Ros 1 This square was built in 1910. It was similar to a big arena and next to the square there was some empty land where people parked their vehicles. In 2010, some neighbours decided to build a new square, totally reformed, a very large and crowded place, which is a meeting point for children and adults. The reform consisted on the paving of the square, the extension of the playground for children, the arrangement of the sand and the construction of the fountains. Also, they built some new stairs for the entrance of the square and they built some new toilets. All the work was very hard but finally the square was very beautiful and modern. Information of Carrer del Roser 2 This street was built many years ago. In this street there was an old chapel but today we cannot find it. It is a long and narrow street where even some flats or buildings are preserved. While walking up the street there are two corners; the one that looks at the south is Carratera Sant Fruits, and the one that looks at the north and climbs up the street is Fra Federic de Berga. When you walk down Carrer del Roser, you find Plaa dels Pasos Catalans. After walking up it you can find Passeig de la Pau. Information of Plaa del Pasos Catalans 3 This square was built at the end of the 20th century. This new square has an area of almost all natural grass. Just in the middle of this square there is a copy of the pine The three branches pine, surrounded by trees. In another place we can find a mini statue... In this position, throughout the ride of Els Elois, the neighbours put a big inflatable pool and it is one of the points where there is more water.

Information of Plaa Sant Joan - 4 This square is a medieval square. It was opened in the first section of the Main Street. This square was built in 1220, in the 13th century, following the orders of the hospitality of Sant Joan. The church was built in this square and has a Romanic origin. The church has a central and lateral nave with open churches and ribbed arches. In front of the church of Sant Joan, there is an old palace, Palau de Peguera, a lordly house which is divided into flats and the ground floor is occupied by a bar. However, it conserves some interesting elements, such as the windows. located on the third ground.

Information of Carrer Major 5 After Plaa Sant Joan, walking up Carrer Major, we can find other important buildings, for example Casa Barons or Casa Solanes, a brick building built by Ramon Cot i Cot at the beginning of the 20th century. Another building in Carrer Major is Casa Toms Pujol, built in 1925 and which still remains as a modernist style. Another important ecclesiastical building, located on the left of Carrer Major, walking up Plaa del Forn, is the church of Sant Franscesc. At the top of Carrer Major there is Placeta de la Ciutat, which, as it is so narrow, is integrated in the street. At the end of the square, and looking at the street, there is Mol de Sal (Salt Mill). It is an eighteenth century building with porches and doorways adovellats at the top of the facade, which is made of thick masonry. This mill is a house that commemorates the time when the activity of the salt had an economic importance for the city. Once Carrer Major is finished, Carrer dels ngels arrives at Plaa St. Pere. Throughout this section is where most people enjoy the ride because the street is very narrow. Information of Sant Pere 6- This square has a medieval origin that matches with the church of Sant Pere, a romanic building that was pulled down in the 18th century to build the new one of Santa Eullia. This is the main area of the festivity of La Patum. The church of Sant Pere de Cors, which nowadays is the church of Santa Eullia, was founded by Pere II of Berga and consecrated by Abril, bishop of Urgell, on the 2nd of January 1267. It was built so that the inhabitants of Berga could have an access to the culture without having to go up to the parochial church, situated by the castle. The new church has a central nave and several side-chapels and a creueria arch. It is a very important point because it is where the cardinal blesses the donkeys. Information of Capella de la Pietat 7- In the center of the square of Sant Pere, and going towards the castle, there is Capella de la Pietat, located in the street of the same name, which is possibly the oldest one in Berga. It includes

some elements that may be pre-Roman. It has a shaft arch, currently covered by another neoclassical arch, and three square apses. Its antiquity is confirmed by the fact that it is documented that the bricklayers who built the church of Santa Maria dAvi (12th century) worked in the reform of this chapel.

Information of the Sink (Carrer de La Pietat) 8- Inside the street of La Pietat, we can find the sink of the street of La Pietat. In the period of the old regim, 16th and 17th centuries, public sinks were an important element in the collective hygiene. Berga had five facilities of this type: Pietat, Fonts de dalt, Ribera; Font de la Gratella and Llad,. In the square of Santa Magdalena there is the only low medieval portal preserved in the city. It communicates with a royal road from Berga to Bag and Ripoll. Its name comes from an old chapel that was near the site and devoted to Saint Magdalen. This is the place where the donkeys have a rest and people have hot chocolate.
