ASSIGNMENT-2 1) A rolled steel beam HB 300, @ 0.588kN/m is used as a column. The column is fixed in the position but not in the direction at both the ends. Determine the safe load carrying capacity of the column if the length of column is 4.5m. 2) A single angle discontinuous strut ISA 130mm x 130mm x 10mm (ISA 130,130 @ 0.197kN/m) with single riveted connection is 2.5m long. Calculate the safe load carrying capacity of the section. 3) A double angle discontinuous strut ISA 150mm x 75mm x 10mm (ISA 150,75 @ 0.165kN/m) long legs back to back is connected to both the sides of the gusset plate 10mm thick with 2rivets. The length of strut between centre to centre of intersections is 3.5m. Determine the safe load carrying capacity of the section. 4) In problem no 3, if A double angle discontinuous strut is connected to one side of a gusset, determine the safe load carrying capacity of the strut. 5) A built up column consists of the two MC 400, @0.494kN/m and two plates 500mm x 10mm. The clear distance between back to back channels is200mm. One plate is connected to each flange side. Determine the safe load carrying capacity of built up section if the effective length of column is 5m. 6) Design a rolled steel beam section column to carry an axial load of 1120 kN. The column is 6.20m long and adequately restrained in position and direction at both ends. 7) Design a single angle of discontinuous strut to carry 80kN load. The length of the strut between centre of intersection is 2.75m.

8) In a roof truss, a diagonal consists of ISA 80mmX80mmX10mm (ISA 80,80 @ 0.118kN/m) and is connected to the gusset plate by one leg only by 20mm diameter power driven rivet in one line along the length of the member. Determine the tensile strength of the members. 9) A double angle tie ISA 125mmX95mmX10mm (ISA 125, 95 @ 0.165kN/m)( short leg back to back) of the roof truss is connected to the same side of the gusset with rivets 20mm in diameter, such that each angle is reduced in section by one rivet hole only. Determine the tensile strength of the member. Stitch rivets have been provided at suitable spacing. 10) Design a single angle section for a tension member of a roof truss to carry a pull of 100 kN. The member is subjected to the possible reversal of stress due to action of wind. The length of the member from centre to centre of intersection is 3.5m. 11) Design a tension member consisting o a pair of angles and connected by their short legs to the same side of the gusset plate. The member is to carry a pull of 180 kN.
