PROVISION OF SAFE DRINKING WATER FOR PEOPLE IN THE CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE OF UNKNOWN (CKDU) AFFECTED AREAS This refers to Director (Development) of Ministry of Water Supply & Drainage letter No:03(i)/03/51 dated 11.03.2012.

A. CKDU Areas in Eastern Province CKDU areas already identified with in the Eastern Province include Wan Ela, PadaviSiripura and Dehiattakanidya. 1. Initiatives already taken to provide safe drinking water as temporary arrangements a) Wan Ela Five (05) GNDx in the Wan Ela area are fed by a water bowser supply arrangement managed by two CBOs. Two NWSDB own bowsers have been vested with the CBOs. Operation and daily maintenance of the bowsers are by the CBOs. NWSDB provide treated water at the Kantale Water Treatment Plant to CBO at the bulk supply rate to fill the bowers. Distribution to the public is by the CBO. This arrangement is monitored by NWSDB Kantale staff. b) Padavi-Sripura It is proposed to introduce a bowser supply arrangement managed by the Pradshiya Sabha to Padavi-Siripura area. They are geared for the operation. The intakes already constructed under JICA RWS project by the North East Provincial Council can be used

for this purpose. The public perception on use of any form of ground water has to be cleared as the already constructed wells are of acceptable water qualities, and a bowser to be sourced to implement this mechanism.

Long term arrangements to provide safe drinking water to the people in the affected areas. a) Wan Ela Wan Ela pipe water supply scheme is designed to obtain treated water from Kantale Water Treatment Plant. Funds for this scheme is available under Capital Budget for this year and it is planned to commence construction within this year.

b) Padavi Siripura 80% of the population is covered under the on going JICA funded Rural Water Supply project implement by the Provincial Council. It is proposed to mobilize Pradehiya Sabha to continue the bowser supply arrangement to the balance 20%. c) Dehiattakandiya Affected areas are covered under the water supply augmentations presently carried to the existing Dehiattakandiya Water Supply Scheme with Capital Budget funds and it is planned to be completed by end 2012. 3. Details regarding any requests made by different parties/institutions and action taken by the NWS&DB None. 4. Your suggestions and action plan if any to provide safe drinking water to the people in the affected areas. Covered under 1 and 2 above

B. CKDU Areas in Uva Province CKDU areas already identified with in the Uva Province include 15 GNDS in Girandurukotte area in Mahiyanganaya DSD and Kukurampola and Rathangama in Buttala DSD, 1. Initiatives already taken to provide safe drinking water as temporary arrangements

a) Girandurukotte Theldeniyaya GND As the first step Theldeniyaya GND in Girandurukotte area is fed water by a bowser supply arrangement managed by NWSDB and 95 families are covered. NWSDB provide treated water

from Girandurukotte Water treatment plant and 10 plastic shell tanks with 1 cum capacity are placed in the area. Distribution to the public is carried out through a village society. Once a week tanks are filled from bowser supply. This arrangement is monitored by NWSDB Girandurukotte staff.

Long term arrangements to provide safe drinking water to the people in the affected areas.
a) Robariyawa & Millaththawa GNDS in Girandurukotte area These areas are covered by NWSDB through bulk supply from Girandurukotte treatment plant and distribution system with maintenance managed by Gamidiriya Foundation. About 1200 water connections have been given under this project.The total cost was beared by Gamidiriya Foundation. b) Rathkinda Proposed Wss for Rathkinda GND in Girandurukotte area One scheme is proposed from Gamidiriya Foundation to supply water from Ulhitiya reservoir after doing treatments. The community contribution for a family is estimated as Rs 14000 with 22 labour days and the community faced difficulties to contribute it. There are around 350families are proposed cover from this scheme and still the programme is not implemented.

Details regarding any requests made by different parties/institutions and action taken by the NWS&DB Gamidiriya Organization requested from NWSDB to cover the water supply in Agala oya Ihala and pahala in Girandurukotte GND from two bulk supply and arround450 families are proposed to cover from it. Estimate preparation is in progress Gamidiriya Organization requested from NWSDB to cover the water supply through two bulk supply in Ulhitiya GND in Girandurukotte area and around 375 families will be benifitted .Estimate preparation is in progress

Your suggestions and action plan if any to provide safe drinking water to the people in the affected areas.
a) Bowser supply arrangement to be expanded to balance GNDs ( 10GNDs located in 10km radius from Girandurukotte wss) b) Feasibility study to implement A new water supply scheme in Rotalawela or Aluyatawala area is in progress.

c) Pipe line Extensions from Buttala wss to be arranged to Kukurampola and Rahathangama area in Buttala DSD
