Goodie boxes for troops
THE Heswall branch of the Royal British Legion has organised a shoe box appeal for
troops headed for Afghanistan. The goodies will be sent to the Royal Welsh regiment
who are going out to the war zone this spring.
Duo arrested after off licence raid
TWO men have been arrested as a result of a robbery at an off licence in Pensby Road
which occurred in February. This crime has been identifed as being part of a series
that have been committed across the Wirral during the past six weeks. A special team
of investigators has been assigned to the cases.
Woman faked phone loss
A HESWALL woman has been arrested after it was established she had falsely claimed
that she had lost her mobile phone and claimed insurance money to the value of 320.
The woman has repaid the money and was cautioned.
Health centre opens
A NEW health centre for people in Heswall, Thingwall and Irby has been opened. West
Wirral Group Practice has merged its surgeries in each of the towns into one purpose
built centre at Arrowe Park Road, Thingwall.
GOOD luck to Hazel Williams who is planning a big
cycle ride in the tropical heat of South East Asia this
year to raise funds for the Alzheimers Society. You
can read all about her preparations in this edition.
The ladies from Heswall Soroptimist Club are
getting ready to be supermodels for the day when
they take part in a fashion show this month.

hAzel Williams, from heswall, has taken up the challenge to cycle from
ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to the iconic Angkor Wat in Cambodia to
raise funds for Alzheimers Society. She hopes to raise over 2000 by
pedalling 300
miles in the
tropical heat in
November this
year.
Hazel, a retired
primary school head
teacher, said: I
decided to take part
in this challenge for
Alzheimers Society
because my father
has dementia and I
know, from frst-
hand experience,
what a cruel disease
it is. Its great to
think Ill be raising
funds to help
support people
to live well with
dementia today and
to fund research
to fnd a cure for
the future. Ive
already started my
training by cycling
to and from Hoylake
Cottage where my
father is a resident.
For Hazel, who is 58, this will be her second challenge to raise funds for Alzheimers
Society. In 2010 she trekked in the Himalayas and raised 3,340.
Alzheimers Society research shows that 750,000 people in the UK have a form of
dementia, more than half have Alzheimers disease. In just 15 years nearly a million
people will be living with dementia. This will soar to 1.7 million people by 2051.

Catwalk queens
HESWALL & District Soroptimists are delighted to announce that they are holding
a Spring Charity Fashion Show in aid of Breast Cancer Care, Jos Cervical Cancer
Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action on Thursday 19th April at 7pm at Heswall Hall,

Youth charged with pub break-in
A GROUP of four youths have been arrested following a burglary at the Sandon Arms
pub in Heswall. One of the youths has been charged while the other three have either
received a caution or a reprimand.

Volunteer honoured
A VOLUNTARY worker from Gayton has been honoured by the local community.
An oak tree and bench were dedicated to Jamie Butler in the grounds of Heswall
Hall and at the United Reformed Church. The 47-year-old, who has spina bifda
was then presented with a letter from Sir Alex Ferguson and Tanni Grey Thompson
at a surprise party afterwards in the church hall. Jamie has raised thousands over
the years for numerous local charities, including Claire House and the family of mia
Austin, from Heswall, who has Locked In Syndrome.
Vans stolen
POLICE are warning that too many commercial vans are being stolen and on each
occasion the owner/driver has left the keys in the ignition and left the vehicle for a
feeting moment.
Man hurt himself while punching a car
POLICE arrested a man in Heswall after they saw him punch the wing mirror of a car
injuring himself in the process. The man fully admitted the offence and was bailed in
order for full cost of damage to be established.

Popular cofee venue just got bigger
THE Beacon, at Heswall methodist Church, on Telegraph Road has been
signifcantly enlarged and refurbished to provide a facility which can improve the
churchs outreach into the local community.
Already a very popular One World coffee shop open for coffee and lunches on
Tuesdays and Fridays and for coffee on Saturday mornings, with profts of over
90,000 being distributed to charities, there is now space for other activities.
Rev Ann Rigby-Jones, minister of the church, welcomed representatives from
local community including councillors, community police, schools and uniformed
organisations at the offcial opening last month.
It is hoped that groups for all ages can fnd space in a safe environment to meet,
either facilitated by the Methodist and local churches, or by renting specifed times
during the week when it is not otherwise in use.

With Easter coming up, here is a book by the ex-archbishop of Canterbury which
examines the ongoing debate about the secularisation of British society. From
the millennium Dome to the restrictions on the wearing of crosses and abolition
of nativity plays, this book argues that Christianity is being marginalised. There
is a widespread if ill-defned sense that a valuable heritage is slipping away, and
this provides a proper debate about the place of faith in modern Britain. Whether
you agree with the archbishop or not, he provides an interesting counter-
argument to those who believe that religion as a whole has had its day. The
book criticizes political leaders for outwardly supporting Christian ideals and yet
passing legislation which seems to go in a different direction.
Although basically a book for believers (whatever their faith ), this book also has something to say
to atheists and agnostics about the dangers of secularisation.
