in 1894, harry phillips Sr. built and occupied the first permanent residence on the palos Verdes peninsula, a small cottage near the present rolling hills city hall. it was replaced in 1910 by a larger farmstead called the farmery which was built in Blackwater canyon on the current-day lariat lane just southeast of the intersection of palos Verdes drive north and rolling hills road where the family lived until the late 1920s. harry, an englishman, came to the palos Verdes peninsula in 1887, settling in San pedro. the peninsula, covered with chaparral, had almost no trees, and water was scarce.

harry phillips Sr. was hired by the Bixby family in 1894 as the foreman of the 16,000 acres Bixby cattle ranch. phillips got the job partly because of his knowledge of the peninsulas limited water resources. the Bixby family had acquired the land a few years earlier from the Sepulveda family, who had title to an old Spanish land grant. phillips was responsible for planting the first groves of eucalyptus and pepper trees in the city of rolling hills estates. phillips also was responsible for planting for firewood the extensive groves of eucalyptus and pepper trees in what is now the Valomonte area of palos Verdes estates.

phillips brought agriculture to the region. he upgraded the Bixby cattle by introducing thoroughbred hereford bulls and marketed the beef to a growing, hungry los angeles and had a herd of approx. 2,000 head of cattle. harry farmed large areas of hay and barley, as well as lima beans and other dry farming crops. phillips encouraged Bixby to lease coastal portions of the ranch near portuguese Bend to Japanese farmers for $10 an acre. about forty families took him up on the offer, including longtime South Bay farmers the ishibashi family. they raised a variety of vegetables, particularly tomatoes and peas. henry phillips Jr. and John Jack phillips, the first son of harry phillips Senior. built their own ranch houses in the early 1910s located near the east end of the area that became the palos Verdes golf course in the Valmonte area of palos Verdes estates. another early ranch was built at about the same time in the same area by raymond mccarrell and was known as the mccarrell ranch the Bixby ranch was sold in 1913 to new york banker frank a. Vanderlip Sr., who ultimately developed the peninsula. phillips continued to run the ranch until 1920. two years later, he died of cancer in lomita at age 59, according to his grandson, harry phillips iii.

going through the highs and lows of owning a restaurant in its first year of business, chris Bredesen, a co-owner of the rockefeller in hermosa Beach, has come to one very important conclusion. it really is all about the chef, Bredesen said. if you dont have a good chef, your place will not be successful. thanks to wesley pumphrey, that is something the rockefeller, located at 422 pier avenue, now feels like they finally have. hes been the key to the restaurants resurgence since taking over as head chef in december 2011. people come to restaurants to eat food. you can have a great atmosphere and great employees, but it comes down to having great food, Bredesen said. the changes he made to the menu and the things he added have given the menu a whole new dimension. he even improved some of the normal items. following the restaurants motto of being simple, yet gourmet, pumphrey offers such unique options as a lobster pot pie, kalbi cheese steak and BBQ pulled duck sandwich. he even created a new happy hour menu with items that include: chicken flautas, ahi sliders and tacos del calle. with 24 beers on draft and another nine out of the bottle, the rockefeller also has everything from fruity beers to dark lagers. the restaurant also offers over 20 different
wines to choose from, nine of which are only $5 a glass during happy hour. doing its best to create a social atmosphere, the rockefeller also has a long wooden table known as the social table and a patio where groups can enjoy the beautiful hermosa Beach weather. people love the social table. it is pretty cool. you sit down, look to your left or right and start chatting with strangers, Bredesen said. the openness on the patio has also been a key for us and is probably the most popular place to sit. its fun now when you come in on the weekend or even times during the week and it is packed. it looks like everyone is having a good time. the restaurants motto of simple, yet gourmet has also taken shape in the decor. from the walls to the tables, the restaurant is covered in dark woods and black and white photos, including one of coney island from the 1940s. we have simple features, but then when you look at the fixtures, it has something extra that makes it nicer, Bredesen said. we dont have the white table cloths, but we still have the black napkins. we just dont want it to be stuffy. we are a somewhat classy place, but you can still come in here in sandals with just a really nice atmosphere.

ask anyone who was around the South Bay from the 1950s through the 1980s about marineland, and youll likely get a wistful, far-off look in return. for many Southern californians, marineland evokes strong childhood memories maybe the first time they saw a whale jump out of the water, experienced sea life and learned about our nearby ocean, or observed dolphins up close. in 1954, one year before disneyland opened, the worlds largest oceanarium at that time proudly opened its doors to the public. located on the serene palos Verdes peninsula coast, marineland hosted millions of visitors before it permanently closed in 1987. Bubbles, a short-finned pilot whale, was the first whale caught for captivity in 1957. caught off the catalina channel, Bubbles was believed to be about seven years old at the time. although Bubbles died a year or so later, she was replaced with another female pilot whale, also given the name of Bubbles. this was never communicated to the public, said patrick helbling, director of the marineland of the pacific historical Society. this second Bubbles continued performing for decades. Shes now approximately 63 years old the oldest whale in captivity and at Sea world in San diego. Bubbles is a wonderful testament to the care she received originally at marineland and later on at Sea world.

marineland was purchased in 1987 by harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, the owners of Sea world, San diego. although the new owners promised to keep marineland open, it was abruptly closed six weeks after the sale was completed. the treasured killer whales, orky and corky, and other animals, were moved to Sea world. it was one of the saddest days i can remember, said Jerry goldsmith, former director of exhibits. much of the infrastructure remained relatively untouched for almost 20 years. the Sky tower stood until 1995, when it was demolished. in June of 2009, the terranea resort opened on the site. former marineland employees are a close-knit group and in 2007, some gathered at Sea world for a 20th reunion and watched their beloved corky perform (now known as Shamu). ive talked to the old timers and we all agree that marineland was the funnest job we ever had, said goldsmith. it was the best time of our lives.

Access to your property has more value than you may know. There is a time when privacy and pre-set appointments are paramount for an owner, and that is understandable. All the same, homes with easy access (meaning a lock box) and limited restriction on days or times to show will always have more showings. It is not uncommon for Real Estate agents to prepare to show a property less than one hour before they get in their car. Buyers often call on a moments notice and say they are ready to go look. The first homes shown are those that are the most readily accessible. You never know when a buyer may be ready to purchase on their first time out looking. Missing out on some of these buyers can be very costly.

with its reflecting pool, sculpture garden and ample white walls, the hollywood riviera home of mike wellens and his artist wife carolyn laliberte is a case study in elegant innovation. lalibertes canvases and sculptures invite a visitor on a unique journey, one in which art becomes functional and everyday objects become portals to new ways of thinking. on the wall of the den, an oversized abstract painting slides silently to one side, revealing a plasma television screen. in the same room, handmade books by laliberte present thoughts and ideas in a way that puts todays electronic tablets to shame. people will come over and say, its like being at the mini-getty, laliberte says with a laugh, referring to the getty museum in west los angeles with its travertine walls, minimalist design and abundant water features. inspired by the Schindler house in west hollywood considered by some to be the first home built in the modern style wellens and lalibertes residence is
l-shaped, with lalibertes studio in a separate rectangular building in back. a darkblue-tiled reflecting pool in the backyard visually connects the main house to the studio. at the far end of the pool, the studios floor-to-ceiling glass walls bookend an exterior wall of rectangular natural stone tiles. here, a Buddha statue is the centerpiece of a modern water fountain. we integrated elements of feng Shui in the construction of the house, explains designer ernesto Barron, who works for the architectural firm that designed the new west hollywood public library. the idea of the reflecting pool was to use it as a mirror. at night when the fountain is backlit, the reflection on the water looks like fire, so there are multiple feng Shui elements represented. eastern-inspired philosophy is an integral part of everyday life for laliberte and wellens, both former yoga instructors who were married at the long Beach art museum, and who have traveled to Bali together. the [Balinese] people are

wonderful, kind and loving, marvels laliberte. they would make offerings to good and evil spirits, because they dont want to upset the evil gods by not giving them anything. Barron took a cue from the couples lifestyle and turned a side yard into a small Zen garden, complete with gravel, Japanese maple trees, and a low wall with a circular niche in the center, where a statue of hindu god ganesh presides over the garden. i wanted this to be a peaceful house, notes Barron. that was the purpose of the Zen garden. also, mike and carolyn practice yoga and meditate daily, so i created a meditation room. the meditation room sits in the basement level of the two-story home and features a frosted glass pocket door for privacy when the space doubles as a guest bedroom. although wellens jokingly refers to the basement as the dungeon, Barron created floating steps to bring light into the lower level. he also turned the code-required fire escape in wellens basement-level office into a natural lightbox with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. for an artist, natural light is as vital as oxygen, and laliberte revels in the copious light that floods the main residence and studio. plentiful skylights and clerestory windows throughout the home allow sunlight to filter in, from sunrise to sunset. the way the light plays in this home

is amazing, laliberte says. i can sit here and just look at the light. youll notice things you didnt before. its kind of like watching a movie. true to the modernist style, Barron, who also designed the landscaping, created the home as a glass box, not only maximizing natural light, but also blurring the lines between indoors and the outside. Very few rooms in the house have shades, because Barron created a green wall of bamboo that surrounds the home, providing both privacy and, from the inside, a view of natural green foliage to accent the homes black and white interior dcor. the master bath has no blinds or shutters. instead, the Japanese maple in the Zen garden is visible through a large picture window, providing a natural green curtain. this luxuriant greenery complements the pale limestone color palette of the master bath, with its cream-colored walls, surfaces and flooring. in keeping with the homes open, modernist design, a direct sight line leads straight from the den in the very front of the house to the corner window of the master bath at the back of the home. the sight line is interrupted only when the master bedrooms oversized pocket door is pulled open, revealing an elaborate, open-carved indonesian portal mounted on clear glass. i wanted to introduce elements of surprise, Barron says of some of the homes more striking features. case

in point: the only feature in the house that is not black or white is a deep scarlet interior wall that spans from the basement to the second-floor ceiling. positioned near the 90-degree angle of the main homes l-shape, the wall serves as a visual anchor and supports the floating staircase. according to feng Shui, red signifies fire, Barron notes, and fire is a powerful element representing passion and energy. the shock of color infuses the core of the home with warmth, an energy that prevents the house from feeling like a cavernous museum gallery. lalibertes museum-quality creations are displayed throughout the home, tastefully arranged to spark interest and surprise around every corner. perhaps the most provocative installation is one that can literally be walked on. the stairway landing closest to the basement level is a transparent glass floor that gives one the sensation of floating above the basement. directly beneath the glass floor, a white clay sculpture of a stylized human form stands in a field of white stones. laliberte says her two dogs, who normally follow her everywhere, instinctively stop short of the clear glass landing. it appears some humans are equally apprehensive. our house was featured on an artists home tour, recalls laliberte. it took people a while to get used to walking on a seethrough surface. Barron intentionally designed the home to serve as a blank canvas that could showcase lalibertes art, but he notes that during the design process, she expressed concern that a modern home would feel cold and hollow. the house is contemporary, Barron affirms, but i added ancient elements natural stone and wood to tone down the modern and add character. furnishings throughout the home incorporate natural elements in an artistic yet functional manner. an industrial, brushed-steel dining table is surrounded by an eclectic mix of fabric-covered chairs and a long wooden bench. in the living room, black leather Barcelona chairs, modeled after the futuristic pieces showcased at the 1929 Barcelona international exposition, stand out in an almost all-white space. and in the kitchen, three glass bulb lighting fixtures dangle like elegant teardrop earrings above a limestone chefs island. unfinished concrete floors throughout the house complete the sense of being in an intimate art gallery, one that invites a visitor to explore and touch and linger, without the feeling of being under the watchful eye of a museum guard. a low, glass-topped blueprint cabinet, similar to taller cabinets that display rare books or small art objects in museums, serves as a coffee table in the den. Showcased inside are lalibertes handmade books. unlike at a museum, these cabinet drawers are kept unlocked, and laliberte pulls open the top drawer to show a visitor the grey matters book she created. an admission ticket is pulled from the grey front cover, which opens to a series of thick pages bearing stylized images and wordplay on the idea of creativity and the brain. the books last page is an accordion-like panel that pulls open to reveal three-dimensional theater seats and small figures on tiny trapezes, flying above the theater of the mind. people will come into the home and say, i dont want to leave. what a great compliment, says laliberte. i like people to come here with an open mind, and when they leave, i hope they can leave with a good memory. more than anything, i want them to be inspired.
