ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES

The first eleven examples below are taken from The Cosmic Computer- Abridged Edition showing some applications of the Vedic formulae. The references given are to this book. Please note that it is not possible here to show the layout and the odd carry figures that occur as in the Abridged book 1. 75 = 5625 Using By One More than the One Before we write the answer straight down. We multiply the 7 by 8 (the number "one more" than 7) to get 56 as the first part of the answer. And we put 25, which is 5, as the last part. Example 1 page 51. 2. 568 998 = 566864 The answer is written straight down by mere mental arithmetic using All from 9 and the Last from 10. Example 5 page 39. You may see how this is done if you look at the difference of the numbers from 1000 and think of the answer in two parts. The remaining examples are given without explanation to show some of the range, simplicity and flexibility of the Vedic system. 3. 35567 - 11828 = 2 3 7 3 9 No crossing out, 'borrowing' etc. Example 5 page 8. The answer is found from left to right using On the Flag. 4. Fractions can be added and subtracted immediately: e.g. 4/5 - 3/4 = 1/20 No common denominators- we write the answer down immediately using Vertically and Crosswise. Example 2 page 84. 5. Find the equation of the line through A(6,4) and B(4,1). Vertically and Crosswise gives the answer immediately as 2y = 3x - 10. Example 6 page 86. 6. Find the recurring decimal for 1/19. 1/19 = 0.052631578947368421 recurring

The answer appears as fast as you can write it using By One More than the One Before. From left to right or from right to left. Example 5 page 99. 7. 3201 4302 = 1 3 7 7 0 7 0 2 The answer appears in one line from left to right or from right to left using Vertically and Crosswise. Example 5 page 107. 8. 4332 = 18766224 by mere mental arithmetic. Example 8 page 109. 9. Find 40342 73 to 5 decimal places. The answer, 552.63014, can be written straight down. Example 5 page 126. 10. Is 6308 divisible by 38? Using the simple, mental osculation procedure we find that 6308 is divisible by 38. Example 7 page 146. 11. Find the first 7 figures of the square root of 10330130. The answer, 3 2 1 4 . 0 5 2, can be put down in one line to any number of decimal places. Example 9 page 156. 12. Find the integral of xsinx with respect to x. The answer can be put straight down (instead of using two cycles of the complicated formula for Integration by Parts): -xcosx + +2xsinx + 2cosx + c. From Discover Vedic Mathematics, page 137. 13. Find the square root of the complex number 15 + 8i. The answer is put down immediately: plus or minus 4+i. The solution given in a traditional maths textbook to this problem took 17 lines of working. From Triples, pages 78 and 131. 14. Solve 2sinx - cosx = 2.

x: a: x-a: x: x:

c -1 2 -4 0

s 2 1 3 5

1 sqrt5 sqrt5 5 5

The last two lines give the exact general solution in triple form. This was also taken from a conventional textbook: the complicated method involved choosing and knowing the appropriate trigonometrical formula, using a calculator at least three times and getting a final answer that is approximate. From Triples, pages 27 and 130. 15 Solve the equation (2x-3)(2x-16)=(x+4)(x-9) Here we use When the Samuccaya is the same it is zero. This gives 3x-12=0, so x=4. The same formula also gives the other solution to the equation, so x-7=0 and x=7. From Discover Vedic Mathematics, page 94.
