ADC-6880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter

Overview
The ADC-6880 analog to digital audio converter converts two channels of balanced analog audio into a single AES3-1992 digital audio signal at 20-bit resolution. It can be used in any of the Leitch 6800 or 7000 series frames, and can be used as a standalone A-to-D converter, or in conjunction with several A-to-D converters linked by a common external sampling reference signal. The ADC-6880 is available with 75 unbalanced digital outputs when used in the 6800 series frame, or 75 unbalanced and 110 balanced digital outputs when used in a 7000 series frame. The ADC-6880 utilizes a 20-bit, 64X oversampling Sigma-Delta A-to-D converter that can sample the audio signal at 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz, based on an external reference signal, or on an internal reference signal generated on board. The audio signal may also be sampled at variable rates from 32 kHz to 50 kHz, based on an external reference signal. The input to the ADC-6880 can be AC- or DC-coupled, and the input attenuation can be set in calibrated 2 dB increments from +16 dBu to +30 dBu maximum analog audio input levels. A gain control allows continuous adjustment of 2 dB. Specifications and designs are subject to change without notice.

Operation

Chapter 2: ADC-6880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter

Operation
Analog Audio Input
The ADC-6880 has two balanced audio input channels that are typically used for stereo audio inputs (left and right). The audio input stage processes the analog audio signal prior to its conversion to a digital signal. In order to accommodate various nominal analog audio levels, each input channel has a selectable attenuator that allows the full-scale digital output level (0 dBFS) to correspond to the users maximum audio signal level. The attenuator can be set in 2 dB increments from +16 dBu to +30 dBu. The factory default setting is +28 dBu. Gain can be adjusted on each channel over a 2 dB range. The gain adjustments are set at the factory from a high-precision audio test reference signal such that the full-scale digital output level (0 dBFS) corresponds precisely with the calibrated selectable attenuator positions of +16 dBu to +30 dBu (described above). The gain can be adjusted by the user to match specific level requirements for full-scale digital audio signal levels. In addition to performing audio-level attenuation, the analog input stage allows the analog audio inputs to be AC- or DC-coupled. The factory default is AC-coupled, and this is the recommended mode of operation. If the ADC-6880 is set to DC-coupled, any DC signal present on the analog audio input signals will be a source of error in the A-to-D conversion. The analog input stage rejects common mode signals that may be present on the audio input signals and provides over-voltage protection for the A-to-D converter. See Configuration, on page 19 for detailed information on attenuation/ gain setting and AC/DC-coupled selection.

Operation

External Sampling Reference

See Attenuation Jumpers, on page 19 for detailed information on selecting the sampling reference.

The ADC-6880 external sampling reference input is a 75 looping BNC input that allows multiple units to be synchronized to a common AES11 sampling reference signal, such as that generated from the Leitch DAR-6880 reference generator. A standard AES3 digital audio signal may also be used. The ADC-6880 cannot accept word clock, or a video signal, as a reference input. The ADC-6880 can be locked to a video signal through the use of Leitchs DAR-6880 reference generator, which can be locked to video.

18

6800/7000 Series - Audio and Video Multi/Demultiplexing Products Installation and Operation Manual

Configuration

Chapter 2: ADC-6880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter

Configuration
There are several settings on the ADC-6880 necessary for proper operation. See Attenuation Jumpers below.

Attenuation Jumpers
The attenuation jumpers allow the digital output signal level to be set over a 14 dB range, from +16 dBu analog input = 0 dBFS digital output, to +30 dBu analog input = 0 dBFS digital output, in calibrated 2 dB increments. This range of input levels allows operators to set the ADC-6880 such that the full-scale digital output (0 dBFS) will match their maximum analog audio signal level. Because the attenuation network is of sufficient precision, the gain potentiometers do not have to be readjusted when changing input attenuation jumper settings. This allows you to set the attenuation jumper to the required setting without having to readjust the gain potentiometers.

AC- or DC-Coupling
These jumpers allow the analog audio input to be AC- or DC-coupled. AC coupling is the default setting and prevents the ADC-6880 from being disturbed by a DC voltage on the analog input signal.

Sampling Reference Selection Switch

SW3 is an edge-mounted, three-position toggle switch that controls the source of the sampling reference signal. This switch allows the sampling reference source to be switched between Internal, External or Auto mode. The internal sampling rate can be switched between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz (see Figure 2-4). Placing SW3 in the Internal mode position forces the ADC-6880 to use one of the internal crystal oscillators as a sampling reference. Depending on the setting of the sampling frequency selection switch (SW2), the ADC-6880 will sample at 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz, and will not be locked to any external sources. This mode is referred to as internal sampling or free run mode. The auto setting allows the ADC-6880 to look for, and lock to, an external reference signal present on the external reference input. If no signal is present, or if the signal becomes unusable, the ADC-6880 will automatically switch to internal Reference mode. When the external reference signal is present and usable, the ADC-6880 will automatically switch back to external Sampling mode and will be locked to the external reference signal. The external setting forces the ADC-6880 to lock to the external reference only. If there is no external reference present, or if it becomes unusable, the ADC-6880 will stop sampling audio data until the external reference is restored. The sampling reference selection switch can be changed during operation of the ADC-6880. The unit does not have to be powered down to change this switch setting.

Sampling Frequency Selection Switch

The sampling frequency selection switch determines which internal sampling reference the ADC-6880 will use when it is in Internal mode. When in the 48 kHz position, the sampling rate will be 48 kHz. When in the 44.1 kHz position, the sampling rate will be 44.1 kHz. See Figure 2-6. When the ADC-6880 is locked to an external reference, this switch will have no effect.

The internal calibration is also performed each time power is applied to the ADC-6880. The SW1 button is a momentary push button that, when pressed and released, initiates the Reset mode of the A-to-D converter IC. It also mutes the digital data at the output of the ADC-6880. During this reset time (approximately 1 second), the analog audio input signal is disconnected, and the inputs are shorted to ground. This is accomplished via relays RL1 and RL2. Inputs are not shorted to ground. The reset procedure removes any DC offsets present on the ADC-6880 input circuit and any DC offset in the A-to-D converter ICs internal input stage.

Sampling Frequency
The green sampling Frequency LEDs indicate if the ADC-6880 is sampling at 48 or 44.1 kHz. If the ADC-6880 is set to External Sampling mode, and the external reference is not at 48 or 44.1 kHz, then the ADC-6880 will indicate that it is locked to an external reference (via the Ref. Pres. LED), but will not have either sampling frequency LED illuminated. This condition is valid, but the external reference signal must be between 32 and 50 kHz for the A-to-D converter IC to be able to lock to it.

External Reference Present

The yellow Ext Ref LED indicates that an external reference is present, the ADC-6880 is locked to it and using it as the sampling reference. If the ADC-6880 is set to internal sampling reference, then this LED will not be illuminated, even if an external reference is present.

External Reference Error

The red external reference Error LED is illuminated when an error on the external reference signal is detected.

The ASM-6800 doubles as a serial distribution amplifier providing four reclocked serial outputs and an embedded audio monitor. It also provides two or four analog audio outputs derived from one or two embedded AES/EBU audio channels. The demultiplexed audio channels can be directly monitored via balanced, low-impedance analog audio outputs. The ASM-6804 provides four analog audio outputs when used in the FR-680x series mounting frames. The ADM-6800 is capable of providing both analog and digital audio output signals. It has four reclocked serial digital video outputs, two or zero analog audio outputs depending on the mounting frame, and two balanced digital audio output channels. The ADM-6804 provides two or four analog audio outputs and two balanced digital audio channel outputs, depending upon the mounting frame used. The ADM-6800C provides four reclocked serial digital video outputs and two single-ended AES channels each with two outputs. The ADM-6804BC, used only in the FR-680x series mounting frames, has two balanced AES output channels and two single-ended AES channels each with two outputs.

SMPTE 272M stipulates that embedded audio must be packaged into groups, and that each group may be comprised of a maximum of two digital audio channels in the AES format. In turn, each AES channel is composed of two monaural audio channels. Thus, one audio group may contain up to four monaural audio channels. For purposes of this manual, the main AES channels are designated as 1 and 2 and the sub-channels as A and B. Therefore, an audio group can be thought of as containing channels 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B.

Channel Swap Control

Two types of swap control are provided: A main swap which routes particular de-embedded audio channels to specific outputs. A monitor swap which is used to swap only the analog outputs for monitoring purposes. This swap does not affect the AES digital output routing. The ASM series modules provide the same module edge-control features as the ADM series, but the ASM provides only analog outputs, making the main and monitor swaps redundant. The user can use either swap to perform the appropriate routing to outputs. The intention of main swap control is to allow the user to appropriately set the routing of particular audio channels to the specific output connectors. The main swap control affects both analog and digital outputs. SW1 enables a swap between channel pairs 1 and 2. SW2 enables a swap between the A and B channels within each channel pair. This is functionally illustrated inFigure 3-1 ADM Series Modules on page 36 and Figure 3-2 ASM Series Modules on page 37, and is summarized in the table below: Main Swap

Monitor Swap
The monitor swap control is controlled via convenient toggle switches at the front of the module. As shown in the block diagram, monitor swap only affects the analog output in the ADM series. This allows the user to monitor the analog outputs on the second channel while not affecting the AES outputs.
Monitor swap affects the analog audio outputs only.

This is functionally illustrated in the table below: Main Swap

Remote control of the swap feature is supported when the module is installed in an FR-7001 frame. External contact closures are provided for this feature. This feature is enabled by appropriately setting the Swap Control mode Jumper, J3. See Figure Jumper Configurations on page 44 and Figure 3-6 ADM/ASM-680X PCB Jumper and Switch Locations on page 46.

Analog Output Levels

Peak analog audio levels are user-adjustable and accessible pots are provided at the front of the modules for calibration purposes. Outputs are factory-set to the following levels: European Countries: 18 dBu corresponds to 0 dBFS input (full-scale digital) Other: 24 dBu corresponds to 0 dBFS input (full-scale digital)

Audio Group Selection

The SMPTE 272M standard stipulates that embedded audio is packaged into groups. Serial video at 143Mb/s can only support one audio group, while serial video at 270 Mb/s can support up to four audio groups. (See the table below for the DIP switch settings.) Audio Group
For 143 Mb/s serial video applications, Group 1 must be selected.

DAC-6880 AES/EBU Digital Audio to Analog Audio Converter

Overview
The DAC-6880 Digital Audio to Analog Audio Converter converts a standard 20-bit AES3-1992 digital signal to its analog equivalent. The unit is available with a 110 balanced input or 75 coaxial input. Accepting data at 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, and 48 kHz, the DAC-6880 is a complete digital audio to stereo analog audio converter. The module receives and decodes data according to the AES3-1992 standard and will identify a loss of input or clock with a card front error LED. The D/A converter utilizes a 128X oversampled delta-sigma modulator and filtering to provide high quality interpretation of 20 bit data. Converted data is distributed to dual analog stereo outputs (two left, two right). Full-scale analog output level is jumper-selectable for either +18 dBu or +24 dBu with 6 dB card front adjustment. Outputs are subject to Leitchs high broadcast quality standards. The module is available for use in all 6800 and 7000 series frames, providing an economical standalone unit, as well as a system unit. Specifications and designs are subject to change without notice.

The maximum analog output level is +28 dBu.

Chapter 6: DEC-6801/DES-6801 Decoder with Frame Synchronizer Module

Installation
Before connecting the DEC/ DES-6801 module to primary power, check (and, if necessary, set) the input voltage selector switch on the rear panel to match the local line voltage.

To ensure stable and trouble-free service the DEC/DES-6801 has been carefully inspected, tested, and calibrated before shipping. Check the equipment for any visible damage which might have occurred during transit and to ensure that the modules have remained properly seated in the mounting frame. The DEC/DES-6801 module is designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of 0 to +40C. No special provisions for cooling are necessary, but care should be taken to prevent excessive heat rise in closed, unventilated equipment racks. The DEC-6801 module can be accommodated in either an FR-6801 or FR-7001 1RU mounting frame, or a FR-680x 2RU mounting frame. It can also be installed in an FR-7000MB MIX BOX standalone frame. The DES-6801 module can only be accommodated in FR-6804 or FR-6804-1 2RU mounting frames. A post attached to the module prevents insertion into a 1RU frame and prevents other modules from being placed too near it.

Operations

Operations
The following sections describes the controls and indicators located at the front edge of the desirable module.

Controls
The Selector 16-position rotary switch selects control parameters. See Bank B2, on page 78. The Adjuster two-position toggle switch adjusts parameter values. The Service Push button allows you to locate the position of the particular module in the network when one or multiple modules are linked together over a 75 network (DigiNet) and connected to the Central Controller (PC or Leitch DigiNet panel). The Frequency Adjust switch sets the free-running clock rate.

LED Indicators
The Bank A/B LED indicates the selected Bank: Bank A is selected if the Bank A/B LED is Off (factory default), and Bank B is selected if the Bank A/B LED is On. The 625 Auto 525 LEDs indicate the standard: The 525/625 LEDs indicate a detected standard if the Auto LED is On, and a forced line standard if the Auto LED is Off. The Unlocked LED indicates (when lit) that the module cannot lock onto the incoming composite signal or that the Incoming signal is not present. The Service LED lights up for a short time at power up but remains Off during normal operation. If the Service LED is blinking or continuously On, a hardware failure has been detected.

Operations

Chapter 6: DEC-6801/DES-6801 Decoder with Frame Synchronizer Module

Jumpers
The Input Termination jumper is used to terminate the input video. The Fs Clk jumper is used to enable the frame synchronization clock. It must be used when the DEC- 6801 module is equipped with the 6801FS, 6801FS-1, 6801FS-2 or 6804FS sub-module. The Dec Clk jumper is used when the DEC-6801 module is used as a decoder only. Frame ID is made possible by reading the silicon serial number if it is installed in the RJ11 at the back of the frame. The two Off/On jumpers are shipped in the Off position from the factory and must both be On to enable frame ID.

The user must use either the FS CLK or the DEC CLK jumper.

Switches
SW4 and SW5 can be used to identify the frame ID if the silicon serial number is not installed. There are 256 possible numeric combinations provided by these switches.

Frame ID
Frame ID is read by the microcontroller on power up in the following sequence: 1. The microcontroller first tries to read the frame ID from the silicon serial number DS2401 placed in the RJ11 at the back of the frame. 2. If the silicon serial number is not installed, the frame ID is read from SW4 and SW5, which are placed on the DEC/DES-6801 module and set appropriately by the user.

DEC-6804 Decoder and DES-6804 Decoder with Frame Synchronizer

Overview
The DEC-6804 and DES-6804 decoders are compact, high precision 12-bit decoders that convert NTSC or PAL analog composite signals into superior quality component (4:2:2) digital video. These decoders use advanced Leitch Phase Quadrature Mixing (PQM) technology for 2-D adaptive comb filtering, and are designed for high performance and optimal value. They are both able to process vertical blanking intervals (VBIs) and handle super-black levels. The DES-6804 also adds frame synchronization features and TBC capabilities. It provides an audio sync lock with video delay and hot-switch outputs for an audio sync interface to accommodate future digital audio modules. This document includes the following topics: Main features Signal flow Front and back modules Installation Operation Parameter groups Specifications Specifications and designs may change without notice.

Features

Features
The following list highlights the features of the DEC-6804 and the DRS-6804: Analog video processing at 6 dB gain range 7.5 IRE black level 360 hue adjustment allowing full-range user control Over-sampling analog-to-digital conversion with 12-bit resolution TBC capabilities, locking to VHS or bad microwave feeds (DES-6804 only) 2-D adaptive comb filtering utilizing the new Leitch PQM technology Automatic PAL/NTSC switching (based on input signal) Full VBI handling and processing (line by line) Test signal generation (75% color bar, FCC composite, black) Full compatibility with existing frames The new Phase Quadrature Mixing (PQM) technology provides the highest degree of video decoding quality while minimizing the level of residual subcarrier artifacts associated with previous comb filter designs. The PQM decoding technology is based on a set of dynamic control signals that are derived from specific quadrature characteristics of the source video signal. These signals are filtered and subsequently used to modulate the summation of the original source video components, in a balanced mixer hierarchy that mirrors the control signal quadrature relationship.

Installation

Chapter 7: DEC-6804 Decoder and DES-6804 Decoder with Frame Synchronizer

Installation
To ensure stable and trouble-free service, the DEC-6804 and DES-6804 modules have been carefully inspected, tested, and calibrated before shipping. Check the equipment for any visible damage that may have occurred during transit. The DEC-6804 and DES-6804 modules are designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of 0 to +40C. No special provisions for cooling are necessary, but take care to prevent excessive heat in closed, unventilated equipment racks.

Jumper Settings
The DES-6804 module includes two jumpers: J4 and P5. The DEC-6804 module includes only the J4 jumper.
If the NTSC/PAL Loop-Through is not connected on the DES-6804 module you must provide a 75 termination either externally, or by setting the P5 jumper to the Internal Termination position.

Jumper J4 allows you to select either Termination On or Termination Off for video input. Jumper P5 allows you to select either NTSC/PAL input Loop-Through or 75 Internal Termination as genlock input options. When you select Internal Termination, NTSC and PAL-B can be connected simultaneously. Figure 7-5 illustrates the location of the J4 and P5 jumpers. The J4 jumper is shown in the Termination On position; the P5 jumper is shown in the Internal Termination position. See the table on Jumper Configurations on page 87 for more information.

Operation

Chapter 7: DEC-6804 Decoder and DES-6804 Decoder with Frame Synchronizer

LED Indicators
Most of the LED indicators operate in a straightforward manner. However, when you make changes to your decoder settings, you must watch the D1 and D2 LEDs together to choose the correct parameter groups. Because there are a large number of parameters on the DEC-6804 and DES-6804 decoders, you need four different parameter groups for each application. Two parameter groups are common to NTSC and PAL-B applications, and two additional parameter groups separately apply only to NTSC or PAL-B. See Parameter Groups on page 92 for more information.

D1 and D2 LEDs
To make changes in the correct parameter groups, first watch the D1 (Bank Mark 0) and D2 (Bank Mark 1) LEDs together. The on/off combination of these two LEDs shows which parameter group you have selected. For example, if the D1 LED is Off, and the D2 LED is On, you have selected parameter group C. If the D1 LED is On, and the D2 LED is Off, you have selected parameter group B. The table below shows the four D1 and D2 LED combinations that indicate which parameter group is active. Chapter 8: ENC/ENS/ENX-6801/M Encoder Modules and Accessories

Installation
Before connecting the ENC-6801 module to primary power, check (and if necessary, set) the input voltage selector switch on the rear panel to match the local line voltage.

The ENC/ENS/ENX-6801 modules are designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of 0 to 40 C. No special provisions for cooling are necessary, but care should be taken to prevent excessive heat rise in closed, unventilated equipment racks. The ENC/ENX-6801 modules can be installed in either a 1RU FR-6801, an FR-7001 frame, or a 2RU FR-6804(-1) frame. The ENS-6801 module can only be installed in an FR-6804(-1) frame. When installed in the FR-7001 frame, an ENC/S/X-6801-M back module is required. When installed in the FR-680X frame, a back panel overlay is required. For loop-through genlock input, a T-adaptor can be used because the reference inputs are high impedance. (A T-adaptor with 75 termination is required for terminating inputs.)

Deserializer and FIFO Delay

The serial digital video enters the module through a 75 W terminating BNC connector. The serial reclocking input stage removes high frequency jitter and also auto-equalizes cable losses (up to 300 m of cable) in case of a 270MHz 4:2:2 serial signal. The remaining lowfrequency portion of the jitter is removed by the 27 MHz parallel clock PLL loop that supplies the read clock for the U20 FIFO chip. The function of the 5K word length FIFO is to adjust the module's delay between the minimum latency and a maximum 2.9 horizontal line delay. The on-board FIFO can be switched to Line-store mode up to one full line, and in this case, the reference has to be within one line range. The module's functionality can be expanded by adding the 6801FS-IO frame synchronizer sub-board to the A1 connector.

Multi-Standard Encoder and Output Buffer

The multi-standard digital video signal encoding is done in U17 TDS6294 encoder chip. The encoder is capable of encoding all legal colors which fulfill the diamond display with adequate headroom. The adjustable parameters are listed. See User-Controlled Parameters on page 116 for more information. There is a user adjustment group that allows the user to correct luminance chrominance balance and hue if the input signal requires correction. However, by a disable function, the encoder can be easily switched to the Calibrated mode. The output of the 12-bit resolution D/A has a 10% adjustment range. The U39 output buffer can drive four double-terminated cable and has a cable preequalization range of up to 50 m cable length.

Genlock
The composite output video is automatically color-frame locking. If a blackburst reference signal is present, no selection is necessary. The serial digital signal and the reference have to be frequency-locked and the phase difference has to be within 5 video lines for stable colorframe locking. When color-frame locking is established, the phasing adjustment range is according to specifications and referenced to the serial digital input source.

User-Controlled Parameters

Function Description
*5 Controls fine phase for ENC/ENX-6801. For fine phase control of ENS-6801, use potentiometer on front of plug-in submodule. Controls are disabled for PAL-M standard. Increase refers to the SCH phase adjustment by 90 increments from 0 to 270. Decrease adjust the SCH phase in the opposite direction: both of these adjustments are for PAL signals. NTSC signals will change to 0 or 180 phasing when selecting either increase or decrease.

*6 *7

Delay Mode
In Line Delay mode, the clock used to input to the memory buffer is derived from the input signal. The clock used to output from the memory buffer is also derived from the input signal. In this mode, high-frequency jitter is removed at the input reclocking circuit, but low-frequency jitter will pass right through the entire unit.

Line Store
In Line Store (i.e. line synchronizer) mode, the clock used to input to the memory buffer is derived from the input signal. The clock used to output from the memory buffer is derived from the input genlock signal. In this mode, high-frequency jitter is removed at the input reclocking circuit, and the low-frequency jitter is removed through the frame buffer.

Input Signal
The modules are shipped in line Delay mode because the timing relationships within the system are not known. If the input signal is not advanced less than one line in time from the destination, the line synchronizer in the encoder cannot provide the correct picture position.

Output Signal
The output signal will either slip a line up or down depending on whether the signal is arriving at the destination early or late.

User-Controlled Parameters

Chapter 8: ENC/ENS/ENX-6801/M Encoder Modules and Accessories

Frame Buffer
The frame buffer is analogous to a bit bucket with the input signal never overfilling or running slow enough to allow the bit bucket to empty and having a steady output at all times. The delay through the frame buffer will always be somewhere around a frame. If the bit bucket (i.e. frame buffer) overfills or empties, there will be a frame slip.

Line Buffer
The line buffer is analogous to a tiny bit bucket with the input signal possibly overfilling or not being able to fill up this tiny bit bucket. The delay will always be around a line. If the line buffer overfills or empties, there will be a line slip.

*When the analog input level is greater than 23.3 dBu (approximately -1 dBFS), a peak detector light will turn on for the corresponding input. A peak detector light will increase in brightness as the input level increases from 23.3 dBu, a light flicker to fully bright. If occasional peaks are seen on the input, a peak detector light may flash on for a period of time. The period of time is dependent upon the duration of the peak. Reduce the gain or input signal level to avoid clipping.

Toggle Switch and LED Display Operation

Any function/parameter (embedding mode, embedding group, gain, or delay) can be adjusted with the Toggle Switch. Moving the Toggle Switch (SW2) down or to the left decreases the value of the parameter. Moving the SW2 up or to the right increases the value of the parameter. If the value of a parameter is negative, all decimal points are lit. When the maximum value of a parameter is reached, the value wraps around to the opposite end of the range: up/down or left/right, depending on which way the PCB was installed (vertically or horizontally).

Control Parameters Summary

When using the MXA-6801-A2/A4 (Analog MXA), the Hex switch should be left in position 0 during normal operation. This allows the Analog MXA to operate at its maximum performance level.

To modify the values of the function, turn the Rotary (Hex) Switch (SW1) as indicated in Table 1-2. The LED display will show a different acronym for each SW1 position and flashes between the function acronym and its value. To increase or decrease the value, move the Toggle switch (SW2) left/down or right/up. See Toggle Switch and LED Display Operation on page 141 for more information.

Item
For proper operation, all preexisting ADS groups must be left-justified.

Function
Chooses the default do nothing mode. Automatically selects follow-up or overwrite embedding using sample distribution from the ROM table. Left-justify embedding after EAV. Embeds the group after the last embedded group. Overwrites the existing group. (This mode uses the same sample distribution as in the group that is being overwritten. Strips ADS clean and left-justifies embedding. Strips ADS clean and does not embed.

Off Auto Justify Follow Ovrwrite Cin-EMB Clean

See Appendix A for a detailed description and representation of graphics.

As seen in the feature list, there are six embedding modes (really five since one of them Auto selects the follow-up or overwrite mode.

Gain Value
The gain value is adjusted in increments of 0.25 dB or 0.5 dB and the delay value in increments of 20 ms. Since the Hex Display can only display three characters, the values are displayed in Hex instead of decimal. For example, if the delay value displayed is 1FE, then the delay is 10.2 ms (20 ms times 1FE [510 decimal]). Since the delay range is large, 0 to EA5F, the last digit is not displayed. The third decimal point flashes when the last digit changes value. See Hex to Decimal Conversion on on page 158 for more information.

Swapping Channels via Remote Control

Swapping Channels via Remote Control

The GPI swap controls are available only when the MXA is used in an FR-7000 frame. To control channel swapping from the GPI, set the Remote/Local jumper to Remote. The default position for the Remote/ Local jumper is Local. When the jumper is set to Local, the GPI controls will not function. When the jumper is set to Remote, the Hex switch swap controls will not function. The GPIs are active low. To swap AES1 Left/Right with AES2 Left/Right, or Channel A Left/ Right with Channel B Left/Right, the Channel GPI control should be enabled. The Left/Right GPI control should be enabled in order to swap AES1 Left with AES1 Right; AES2 Left with AES2 Right; Channel A Left with Channel A Right; or Channel B Left with Channel B Right. When the Left/Right GPI control is asserted, both left/right pairs are swapped.

Audio Embedding
All MXA modules embed audio data into one audio group at a time, filling positions W, X, Y and Z. See Figure 9-13 Audio Group on page 157 for more information. The group embedded is selected using the Hex switch on the module edge. The MXA-6801-A2 accepts only two audio channels: Channel A Left and Channel A Right. Positions W and X are used for Channel A Left and Right, respectively. When using the MXA-6801-A2, audio group positions Y and Z are muted. Since the MXA modules embed audio in four channels at a time, it is not possible to use a second MXA-6801-A2 to fill positions Y and Z with additional audio data. The MXA-6801-A4 accepts four audio channels: Channel A Left, Channel A Right, Channel B Left, and Channel B Right. These channels are embedded in positions W, X, Y, and Z, respectively.

Chapter 10: VFS-6801 Serial Component Frame Synchronizer Module

Operations
The following controls and indicators are located at the front edge of the module:

Controls
The HEX switch (SW1) allows you to select the control parameters. (See Switch Settings on page 168.) The Adjuster two-position up/down toggle switch (SW2) allows you to adjust the parameter values. The Service Push button allows you to locate the position of the particular module in the network when one or multiple VFS-6801 or any other modules are linked together over a 75 network (DigiNet) and connected to the central controller (PC or Leitch DigiNet panel).

LED Indicators
The 625 Auto 525 - 360, 270, 143 LEDs (green) show the standard as follows: the 525/625 LEDs indicate a detected standard if the Auto LED is On and a forced line standard if the Auto LED is Off. The Data Pres LEDs (green) lights to indicate that a valid source of serial digital video is present at the input of the module. The Service LED (amber) lights for a short time upon power up but remains off during normal operation. If the Service LED is blinking or continuously on, a hardware failure has been detected.

Jumpers
ICLK: The ICLK jumper is not used. OCLK: The OCLK jumper has to be installed. Frame ID: Frame ID is made possible by reading the silicon serial number (if installed in the RJ11 at the back of the frame). The two jumpers are shipped in the Off position from the factory and must both be in the On position to enable reading of Frame ID.

VTS-6801 Video Timing Switcher

Overview
The VTS-6801 is a dual digital video timing switcher. The VTS can be used as a digital line delay, a 2-by-1 clean-switch router, and as a backup video switch. When the VTS is used as a back-up video switch, on detection of loss of video or a noisy video input, the VTS routes the other program input source or black to the program output. The VTS can be genlocked to either program input or an external analog reference. The VTS also includes two GPIs, which can be used to control each 2-by-1 cleanswitch. Specifications and designs are subject to change without notice.

Toggle Switch and Hex Switch Operation

Any function (switching standards or reference source), can be adjusted by using the Toggle Switch (SW2). If SW2 is mounted horizontally, it is adjusted Up/Down. If it is mounted vertically, it is adjusted Right/Left. Holding the SW2 down decreases the value of the function. Holding SW2 'up' increases the value of the function. When the maximum value of a function is reached, the value wraps around to the opposite end of the range. Turn the Hex switch, SW1, to the positions listed below to modify the value of the functions indicated.

Control Function Details

Control Function Details

The following table describes the control function in detail: Switch Position (SW1)
0 1

Function
No adjustment Lock mode

Action
No parameters can be adjusted. Lock mode can be set to 525, 625, or Auto Detect. In Auto mode the system detects the standard of the chosen reference and automatically sets the system standard. Setting the Lock mode to 525 or 625 forces the system to the selected standard. If any input conflicts with the set standard, an error light will be illuminated for that particular input. This allows for horizontal timing adjustments or delays between the serial input video and the output. The adjustment is made in (37 ns) increments or decrements. Since both serial inputs are locked together horizontally, this affects both video streams. When enabled the other SDI program is routed to the program output when the currently selected SDI program input signal is not lockable. If Insert Black is also enabled on breakup or loss of signal, Video Black is routed to the program output. If Replace Serial is disabled, PGM Input 1 is routed to PGM Output 1 and PGM Input 2 is routed to PGM Output 2 regardless of the state of the input signal (and regardless of the setting of Insert Black). When GPI 1 is enabled (and the GPI 1 input is asserted). the PGM Input 2 is switched to PGM Output 1. If the GPI 1 input is de-asserted, then PGM Input 1 is routed to PGM Output 1. If GPI 1 is disabled, then GPI 1 Input is ignored. If GPI Input 2 is asserted, then PGM Input 1 is switched to PGM Output 2. If GPI Input 2 is de-asserted, then PGM Input 2 is routed to PGM Output 2.

This option controls the GPI status with the use of the switches instead of the BNC connector. The effect on the input switching is the same as when using the BNC, it is also affected by the polarity option. Corresponding outputs are listed in the table in the next section; See page 183. This option will only work if the GPI is disabled (SW1 position 4 and 5). Same as for GPI 2 above.

External Reference Type Test mode

Action
Sets the type of External Analog Reference connected to the VTS. If set High, then sync input is selected (4 V sync); if set Low, then composite input is selected (300 mV). Toggle On to enable the Test mode. If an RS-232 port is connected to J1, then debug messages will be transmitted from the VTS to the RS-232 port. Set the computer terminal interface to no stop bits, 8 bits, and 1 parity bit (N81). This mode is meant for debugging purposes and should not be accessed during normal operation. Replace Serial Time Delay works only if Replace Serial (SW1 position 3) is enabled. If Insert Black (SW1 position B) is set for Output other PGM Input, the Time Delay is set to X value other than 0 sec (0 to 15 sec in 0.5 sec increments). When either output is replaced by Serial Input on PGM 1 IN or PGM 2 IN due to signal loss or noisy signal, it will take X amount of time to recover from the moment when the original Input signal is fed back to PGM 1 IN/PGM 2 IN. Example: When PGM 1 IN is lost, PGM 2 IN is fed to PGM 1 OUT until PGM 1 IN becomes continuously valid throughout the delay time. Once valid and delay time has passed, it will switch back to PGM 1 IN to PGM 1 OUT. The process is identical for PGM 2 IN.

The effect of a high or a low from each GPI control is also affected by the polarity option of SW1, positions 6 and 7. The following tables describe the actions and effects when the polarity is active high, the opposite of this is true for a polarity of active low. If the GPI signal is low, then the input is passed straight through to its appropriate output. In contrast to this, if the GPI signal is high, then the input is switched to the opposite output. Shown below are the possible combinations of GPI controls and the input which appears at each output.

General Issues

General Issues
If the VTS is used as a back-up switcher or as a clean-switch router, the External Analog Reference should be used as the board reference. If the VTS is used as a back-up switcher, a certain amount of noise on the PGM inputs will be rejected. The PGM output will switch back and forth between the primary video input and the secondary video input, if the primary signal is intermittently noisy. The VTS processes the video sync information on the PGM inputs to prevent the PGM outputs from failing under moderately noisy conditions. If the PGM inputs contain illegal data during the active picture area, the VTS will legalize the video data.

Left Mode Justify

Left Mode Justify

This mode embeds audio after EAV. The audio is embedded as specified group number (EMBED_GROUP), and any existing auxiliary data packets (ADP) not using the ADS area used by the audio groups is kept (if an ADP is located just after the EAV, it is overwritten with the new embedded audio group). Fragments may remain in the ADS if the audio group partially overwrites an existing ADP. This is not a problem for most De-Muxes, but may cause odd behavior in some equipment. EMBED_GROUP will not be embedded and an error will be reported if the group specified already exists in the ADS.

Follow Mode Part 1

Follow Mode Part 1

Follow mode starts embedding after the last embedded audio group. The audio is embedded as the group specified (EMBED_GROUP). It will not destroy any ADPs already present in the ADS.
EMBED_GROUP will not be embedded and an error will be reported if the group specified already exists in the ADS.

Existing packets in the ADS will be left justified. If the pre-existing ADDs are not left justified (and do not follow each other within a 3 or 4 of clocks), the embedder will report an error and not embed.

Overwrite Mode Part 1

Appendix A: Embedding Modes Graphic Description

Overwrite Mode Part 1

Overwrite specifies the groups you want overwritten, and which groups you want to embed audio data onto. If the specified audio group to overwrite (OVERWRITE_GROUP) exists, the embedder will embed the group as EMBED_GROUP. EMBED_GROUP and OVERWRITE_GROUP do not need to have the same value. If the specified overwrite group does not exist, the audio group is not embedded, and an error is reported. Audio groups are embedded with the same sample distribution as the overwritten groups.
