Catalog Course Description: This course covers inferential statistics, analysis of variance, multiple regression, time series forecasting and their application in business decision making process. Excel and/or statistical software will be used throughout the course. Prerequisite(s): One of the following courses: Math 131 or OMG 221 Text: Anderson D.R., D.J. Sweeney and T.A. Williams, Statistics for Business and Economics, 11th edition, 2009 , Thompson/South-Western. (Please note that assigned homework problems are based on 11th edition of the book) Students Learning Objectives: Participants in this course will study the basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics and their application in business decision-making process. Focus is on the applications of statistics to the functional areas of business: accounting, finance, management, marketing and operations. Upon completion of this course students are expected to: Define and explain the relationships of statistics to other business areas. Apply the statistical analysis methods such as hypothesis testing, ANOVA, regression and forecasting methods in business decision making. Identify and use the appropriate statistical technique for analyzing data Interpret the results of statistical analysis and communicate the results with people not familiar with statistics Apply the statistical methods on real data using MS Excel or a statistical software package e.g. SPSS. Course Expectations and Policies: Course Expectations: Each student is expected to read the text BEFORE each class meeting time. The university standard for course workload is two hours of outside work for every hour in class, i.e., a 3-unit course requires 6 hours of work per week. You must also carry the text book in all class meeting.

Attendance Policy: It is expected that students will attend class regularly and participate in the class discussion throughout the semester. More than two sections absences will adversely impact your grade. Missing quizzes and course materials are the sole responsibility of students and there is no MAKE-UP quizzes. Academic Integrity: Cheating or plagiarism in connection with an academic program or class at a campus is subject to discipline as provided in Sections 41301 through 41304 of Title 5, California Code of Regulations. Please see the University Catalog for further information. Due Dates/Make up Work: Exams must be taken as scheduled; Assignments are due when scheduled. Make-ups will be allowed only if the student has contacted the professor before the due date, detailing a serious problem. There is no make up for quizzes. Disabled Students Services: Students with verified disabilities are eligible for a variety of support services from the Disabled Services Office. Information regarding special facilities and services available to students with a disability may be obtained from the Director of Disabled Student Services Office, located in WH B-250. II. The final course grade will be determined based on the following weights: Midterm I ..30% Midterm II ..25% Final ...25% Homework and Quizzes (HQ) 20%

Exams: Exams consist of multiple choice and problem solving questions. Students must write one short paragraph in plain English explain their findings for each problem they solve. Quizzes: A list of the selected problems at the end of each chapter is provided on the course outline table. The answers of these problems are provided on Blackboard. Students are responsible for solving and understanding these problems and preparing themselves for the quizzes and exams. The pop-up quiz will be held randomly in different sections of the class. Selected exercises and problems will be discussed in the class. Students may need to use Excel to solve some of the assigned problems.

Homework: A set of questions/problems for each chapter is provided on blackboard under the Assignment tab. Students must answer the questions online before the due date. The link will be unavailable after the due date). Study Hints: Do not hesitate to ask questions in person during office hours or via email. Read the text BEFORE you come to each class meeting. Do not MISS the class meetings and participate in discussions. Attend classes on time to make sure to take all the quizzes. After each class meeting re-read the text and do the exercises.
