Pinkston bags the big check at Bass N Bucks
with a 14.62 lbs sharelunker!
With high winds at the end of the week, Toledo Bend must have turned up some big fsh! Huge big
bass were seen throughout the day at Bass N Bucks Toledo Bend Team Tournament Trail on Saturday
Feb. 25 with the frst coming in at 9 a.m. Robert Moore brought in a 9.86 lbs big bass frst thing that
morning seemingly assuring a big bass win and weighed in an additional 15.64 lbs with four more fsh
at the weigh in giving him a total of 25.50 lbs and the lead for a good while. Throughout the weigh
in there were plenty of big fsh with another coming in at 9.38 lbs and yet another show rocker at an
astonishing 11.20 lbs! But it was Ryan Pinkston who shattered the competition with a scale shaking
14.62 lbs sharelunker! Pinkstons big bass landed less than a pound short of a record on Toledo Bend.
Pinkston fshed without a partner on Saturday, his usual fshing partner, Scooter Clark, was not able
to go that day due to attending a funeral. Pinkston said that overall he had a great day of fshing and
although his partner couldnt make it gave it his all. He said that he caught an early limit, started
throwing Big Bite Bait Lizardsand started the day with 16 lbs Pinkston said that he didnt have
a bite until about 8:30 a.m. and moved around a lot throughout the day. He said that the catching died
around for a while until about lunch and it turned around then. He slowly culled his way up to about
20 lbs at that point and he said, around two is when everything got crazy. He said he had straightened
a hook on one lizard and thats when he knew that he needed heavier artillery. He switched out to a
Jewel Heavy Cover Football Head jig and on his second cast caught the big one. He claims it was a fght,
and still didnt know exactly what he had until it was in the boat and he said he just stared at it. He said,
Ive caught tens, but Ive never even seen anything like this beforeI threw right back in can caught
an eight and decided to just keep fshing and culled another 5 pounder. Pinkston said that he fshed
in four to six feet around stumps. He also credits the sensitivity of his St. Croix rod because the bass
were biting very subtly and he believes that the rod really helped to catch his limit for the day. Pinkston
landed in frst with a total weight of 36.06 lbs. He would like to thank Texas Farm Bureau Insurance,
Wulf Outdoor Sports, St. Croix Rods, and Jewel Bait Company. Pinkston has previously fnished second
fve times in the Bass N Bucks Trail, and fnally got his win with one whopper of a sharelunker.
Second place was won by Ronnie Bland and Rusty Clark who weighed in a 28.12 lbs limit with a 9.02
lbs big bass; defnitely nothing to bat an eye at neither. They fshed outside grass lines with football jigs
and Carolina rigs at the south end of the lake. Bland and Clark had a pretty consistent day all day long,
they hit a little lull at one point but overall had a pretty steady day. They would like to thank God and
their families for their day on the lake; also, Golden Triangle Industries and Cast Away.
Third place went to Robert Moore and Rick Stephens who had held the frst place position for quite
a while during the day. Their 9.86 lbs early big bass almost assured them a frst place win, but no one

was counting on all the big fsh caught out of Toledo Bend that
day. Moore said that he caught the big fsh on a jig frst thing in
the morning and fshed 27-28 feet of water and just ran and hit
points all over the place. He said he probably hit about 20 places
all day just crankin with a Sixth Sense Lures and a crank bait
prototype. Moore said he caught fsh here and there[but]
didnt catch more than two fsh in one spot. He would like to
thank Theme Design of Houston, Sixth Sense Lures, Scottys
Taxidermy, and Bass Kandi.

ShareLunker program
Coordinator to Retire
David L. Campbell, coordinator of Texas Parks
and Wildlife Departments ShareLunker program,
will retire at the end of March.
Campbell has worked for Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department for 46 years. He was inducted
into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame
in 2011.
As manager of the Tyler Fish Hatchery, he
was instrumental in the introduction of Florida
largemouth bass into Texas and has helped stock
fsh into almost every public reservoir in the state.
He has been associated with the ShareLunker
program since its beginning. He picked up the frst
fsh entered into the program in 1986 and most of
the more than 500 entered since.
Through his years of experience of caring for
trophy largemouth bass, Campbell contributed a
great deal to the knowledge of how best to care
for big fsh and communicated this information
to the public through countless interviews with
media from newspapers, magazines, radio and
television. This emphasis on the proper way to
handle big fsh appeared in newspaper articles
as early as 1990 and may prove to be one of
Campbells most enduring legacies. Coming as
it did at the same time catch-and-release of big
bass became the norm, the impact of proper fsh
handling on the conservation of trophy bass can
hardly be overestimated.
David Campbell and the ShareLunker
program are almost synonymous, said Gary Saul,
director of TPWDs Inland Fisheries Division. He
is without doubt the number one ambassador
for the ShareLunker program, which is TPWDs
most highly visible program, gaining more media
coverage annually than all other TPWD programs
combined. To hundreds of anglers and the public,
Campbell is Mr. ShareLunker.
David Campbell has been one of the most
dedicated employees of TPWD I have ever worked
with, said Allen Forshage, director of the Texas
Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, where the
ShareLunker program is headquartered. His
work ethic is legendary within TPWD. Few people
have so completely and selfessly dedicated their
lives to making fshing better for the anglers of
Texas as David has. Every big bass caught from a
Texas reservoir is part of his legacy.
Following is a synopsis of Campbells career
with TPWD.
Campbell started work in 1965 as a fsh
hatchery assistant at the Lewisville State Fish
Hatchery and worked his way up to Hatchery
Manager at the Tyler Fish Hatchery and later the
Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. He has raised
and stocked literally millions of fsh in Texas
waters including black bass, channel catfsh, blue
catfsh, crappie, striped bass, hybrid striped bass,
northern pike, walleye, peacock bass and several
sunfsh and forage species.
In 1973 Campbell went to Florida to collect
Florida largemouth bass. The stocking of Florida
largemouth bass into Texas public reservoirs
elevated trophy fshing in Texas forever and
earned Campbell the nickname Godfather of
Big Bass. Under the direction of former TPWD
Fisheries Director Bob Kemp, Campbell began
breeding and stocking pure Florida bass as an
experiment to increase the size of trophy bass in
Texas. By the early eighties, these efforts began to
pay off as the 13.5-pound state record that had
existed since 1943 was broken four times in six
years. Then in November 1986, Mark Stevenson
caught a 17.67-pound bass named Ethel out
David L. Campbell was the coordinator for
the ShareLunker program from its inception
in 1986 until his retirement in 2012. He
was a valued employee of Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department for 46 years.

records, garnered nationwide media coverage, and
changed fshing in Texas forever.
Campbell spent hours every night trying to get
the fsh to eat until he fnally nursed her back
to health. The importance of the success of that
effort is enormous: In part because that fsh lived,
a series of events took place that had a national
impact on bass fshing, a huge impact on the
Texas economy, and signifcant improvements
in the TPWD hatchery system, including
construction of a state-of-the-art hatchery,
ShareLunker care and breeding facility, visitor
center and Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.
With Ethel the ShareLunker Program was born,
and catch-and-release conservation became a
way of life for trophy bass anglers. Since that time,
there have been more than 500 entries into the
ShareLunker program, and Campbells research
and insight into trophy bass have not only given
TPWD the largest collection of data on big bass in
the world, but have earned him the respect and
admiration of anglers and outdoor writers alike.
In addition, Ethel proved to be a fsh that
changed the world of bass fshing. After Campbell
nursed the fsh back to health, she was put on
display at Bass Pro Shops in Springfeld, Missouri,
where she pulled millions of visitors into the store.
Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris credited
Ethel with much of the success of the business,
saying that she was the best thing that ever
happened to Bass Pro in terms of getting people
into the store. In recognition of that contribution,
Morris donated $650,000 for the construction
of the Richard M. Hart and Johnny Morris
Conservation Center at the Texas Freshwater
Fisheries Center, which was built largely to house
the ShareLunker program.
Bass Pro Shops now has more than 50 stores
and donates millions annually to conservation.
As the coordinator of the ShareLunker program
for most of its 26-year history, Campbell picked
up most of the fsh from anglers, driving 10,000
miles or more annually and working all night and
many weekends to do so.
Campbell is untiringly modest about his
achievements, preferring to give credit for
his success to others. What stands out more
than anything else from the 26 years of the
ShareLunker program is the cooperation from
the anglers, he said. Anglers have been very
supportive of the program. They have learned how
to care for their big fsh, and they understand the
objective of the program is to increase the number
of trophy bass caught in Texas. If you dont have
the support of the people using the sport fshery
itself, you havent accomplished anything.

deal.

David Driskell and Craig Darby Top the Field
at Patriots Challenge Fishing Tournament
The early spring weather was windy as a front blew in to
challenge a feld of 18 competitors at the Patriots Challenge open
fshing tournament on February 25th. David Driskell and Craig
Darby got off to a great start and never looked back. Their fnal
weight of 22.91 lbs. included a nice 5.67 lb kicker to put them in
frst place. Their strategy was to stick to Carolina rigged plastics
and swim baits with a slow presentation. Jay Bennett and Steve
Evans brought in the days Big Bass with a 6.70lb caught at midday
with a Watermelon Fluke in 4 ft. of water, they also found fsh
hitting white spinner baits throughout the days fshing to help
them to a second place fnish with 20 pounds even. Third place
was James Merrill and Sam Loftin who turned in a respectable
18.28 lb. sack of fsh.
All but two teams weighing in had their fve fsh limits with fve
fsh in the six pound range. The spring spawn is here and with the
weather holding steady should produce some great fshing action
for everyone throughout the month of March.
The next Patriots Challenge is set for March 17th and will be
introducing the Honor and Remember Flag campaign to recognize
everyone who has sacrifced their life in the service of our Country.

Movement of largemouth Bass
Following tournament-release
Tournament fshing is popular at Sam Rayburn Reservoir.
TPWDs most recent estimates indicate that 52% of Sam
Rayburn anglers participate in at least one bass tournament
per year, compared to only 14% of all Texas anglers. We
also estimate that there are over 400 bass tournaments per
year at Sam Rayburn, with tournament fshing (including
practice fshing) comprising 49% of the total annual fshing
effort, and 64% of the bass fshing effort. Therefore, we
know that tournament anglers handle a large number of
bass every year at Sam Rayburn, and some of these fsh
may be relocated greater than 20 miles from their original
capture point. In addition, because a majority of the larger
tournaments conduct weigh-ins at the lower, southeast
end of the reservoir, concentration of largemouth bass at
weigh-in sites is also likely. These concerns can affect overall
angler catch rates, both in a negative (relocation) and
positive way (stockpiling following weigh-ins). If stockpiling
is severe, fsh growth, body condition, and survival may be
reduced.
At least 12 peer-reviewed studies have examined
largemouth bass movement and dispersal rates associated
with tournament weigh-in sites. Overall, combining most of
the study results, largemouth bass traveled an average of 1
mile from the release site within 40 days. By the end of the
various studies (study lengths ranged from 3 months to 2.5
years), the average dispersal distance for each bass was 2.2
miles, but 51% of fsh were still within 1 mile of the release
site. Only 14% of bass returned to their original capture site
(homing behavior), and 22% were recaptured by anglers.
The most recent studies tend to indicate higher rates of
dispersal and homing behavior. At Lake Rideau, Canada
(1996-1998), fsh were displaced from 1 to 10 miles. After 2
weeks, average dispersal distance of bass was only 440 yards.
However, 37% of fsh eventually returned to their original
capture site (all were displaced less than 5 miles). A study
at Chesapeake Bay, Maryland (2000) indicated that 64% of
largemouth bass had moved at least 0.3 miles within a week.
The average fnal dispersal distance of bass was 6 miles
from release sites and 95% were at least 0.3 miles away.
Even though fsh were displaced 9 to 13 miles from capture
areas, 30 to 40% of bass returned to initial capture areas. At
Lake Martin, Alabama (2005), bass moved an average of 5
miles from the release site after 10 weeks. After 2 months, no
fsh were in close proximity to the release site, and all fsh
tracked over 3 months returned to within the same general
area of capture.
However, the three recent studies above involved
simulated tournament conditions. That is, fsh were
collected with an electrofshing boat, implanted with
an electric transmitter, and then displaced to mimic
tournament displacement. The researchers did this to
minimize death of tagged bass by eliminating fsh stress
associated with livewell confnement and the weigh-in
process, as implanting transmitters is a signifcant stressor
by itself. Nearly all of the older studies used bass from actual
tournaments. This indicates that the rate and distance
largemouth bass disperse from a weigh-in site is related to
fsh condition. Fish in good shape likely disperse quicker
than stressed fsh.
Due to the variable results from these studies, it is hard
to make specifc conclusions relative to Sam Rayburn
or Toledo Bend reservoirs. In general, it appears that if
largemouth bass are released after tournaments in good
shape, only short-term stockpiling occurs at release sites, as
most fsh disperse from release sites within 2-3 months and
up to 40% of these fsh may return to original capture sites.
Although fsh displaced up to 13 miles have demonstrated
homing abilities, few make it back to original areas if
displaced over 6 miles. In contrast, as tournament-related
stress increases, bass will disperse less. Specifc rates of
movement following release are likely affected by available
habitat, food availability, location of release (main lake or
cove), fsh size, and water temperature.
Most importantly, a study we conducted at Sam Rayburn
in 2003-2004 indicates that population-level impacts of
tournament-related bass relocation and concentration
are likely low. No question, stockpiling at release sites does
occur, as we estimated that 31,050 bass were transported
to weigh-in sites during the one-year study. But, we also
estimated that tournament anglers transport only 5% of the
total largemouth bass population of legal-length (31,050 of
the 621,000 available bass) in one year. Simply put, only 1
out of 20 bass 14 inches in length or greater is subjected to
relocation and potential crowding at release sites per year.
Even though population-level effects are likely low,
tournament organizers should still do everything possible
to minimize potential overcrowding after release. Properly
aerated live-release boats or trailers should be used to
scatter fsh over broad areas, and weigh-ins should be spread
out over the entire reservoir. If you have questions about

Sunshine and warmer temperatures made for a good day for anglers fshing the Bud Light 2012 Big
Thicket Spring Team Division Tournament on Sam Rayburn Lake Sunday, Feb. 26.
Jim Nix and John Packard pulled ahead of the pack with a 19.53 lbs and a 6.64 lbs anchor. They
fshed the north end around Jackson Hill with Rat-L-Traps and Sixth Sense square bill cranks. They
said they had a slow day all day, but got four good ones and say that thats what won it for them. They
fshed in two to eight feet of water and said they just tried to fnd grass all day and caught the biggest
on around 7 or 7:30 a.m.
Second place, the team of Brian Branum and Keith White, was only ounces away from the win
at and stringer weight of 19.51 lbs and a big bass anchor at 8.44 lbs. Branum said that they fshed
around the 147 bridge area with his typical gear, a Santone M-Series prototype. He said that they really
didnt starting catching anything until about 9 a.m. and that White caught the frst one around 8:45
a.m. and the last one was caught about 30 minutes before they had to head to the weigh in. Branum
said that they were also fshing deeper than they normally do at around 12 feet. They would like to
acknowledge Santone Lures, R1-Bass, and the Sam Rayburn Tackle Monkey.
Third place went to Justin Sowell and Justin Cleveland with a stringer weight of 18.66 lbs.
The next tournament in the Big Thicket Team Series will be March 11 at Lake Livingston and the
next Toledo Bend/Rayburn Spring Team Division tournament will be held on March 18 at Cassels

Toledo Bend Toyota ShareLunker
Biggest of Season to Date
ATHENSToledo Bend, the sprawling reservoir on the border
between Texas and Louisiana, produced the sixth Toyota ShareLunker
of the current season Saturday, a 14.20-pound largemouth bass that is
the largest entered so far this season.
Ryan Pinkston of Center was fshing in a Bass n Bucks tournament
when he caught the fsh about 2:00 p.m. while fshing in about fve
feet of 60-degree water.
Fishing was fairly slow at frst, Ryan said. I had about 20 pounds
and knew I had to get my weight up, so I pulled out a Jewel Heavy
Cover Football Jig and started throwing it. On about the second or third
cast, I hung the big fsh. The fsh went under the boat and wrapped me
up a little bit, and of course I thought that was the end of it.
Pinkston had no idea how big the fsh was until he actually got it
in the boat. I laid it in the foor, and thats when I knew it was not a
normal fsh, he said. It was huge. I didnt know if it was 11 or if it
was 15.
Pinkstons luck continued: On the next cast, he caught an 8.5-
pounder. He fnished the tournament in frst place with 36.06 pounds.
Following the tournament, Pinkston took the fsh to Toledo Town
and Tackle in Many, Louisiana , where it was weighed on certifed
scales at 14.20 pounds. It was put into a tank with two other fsh
to await pickup. The wrong fsh, an 11.7-pounder, was accidentally
picked up, and the error was not discovered until the fsh was weighed
at TFFC the next day. By that time the other fsh had been released.
This was an unfortunate error, but because the angler legally caught
the fsh and it was weighed on certifed scales, it is a valid entry into
the Toyota ShareLunker program, said Allen Forshage, director of
TFFC.
Toledo Bend has now produced fve ShareLunkers. The last was in
2008. The largest ShareLunker from the lake before Pinkstons catch
was a 14.25-pounder caught by Tanya Sorter in 2006. The current lake
record is 15.32 pounds caught by Eric Weems in July 2000.
Pinkstons catch makes him the frontrunner for Angler of the
Year. The person who catches the largest entry of the season will be
named Angler of the Year, and if that person is a Texas resident, he or
she will receive a lifetime fshing license. The Angler of the Year will
also receive a prize package from G. Loomis worth more than $700.
The package will include a G.Loomis NRX 854C JWR casting rod, a
71, fast-action, power-oriented casting and pitching stick designed
specifcally for fshing big bass in heavy cover. Its rated for 14 to
20-pound test line and lures ranging from 5/16 to ounces.
Also included will be a Shimano Chronarch 200 E7 casting reel. The
new Chronarch E reels feature a long list of proven Shimano features
including high effciency gearing, a lo-mass drilled spool system and
super stopper. For smoothness and durability, each has a shielded
A-RB ball bearing, fve shielded SUS bearings, and a roller clutch.
The 200 weighs in at 7.6 oz.; the amount of line retrieved per crank is
30-inches. A 150-yard spool of 30-pound green Power Pro braided line
will also be included.
Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass
from Texas waters, public or private, between October 1 and April 30
may submit the fsh to the Toyota ShareLunker program by calling
program manager David Campbell at (903) 681-0550 or paging him
at (888) 784-0600 and leaving a phone number including area code.
Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel within 12 hours.
ShareLunker entries are used in a selective breeding program at
the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens . Some of the
offspring from these fsh are stocked back into the water body from
which they were caught. Other ShareLunker offspring are stocked in
public waters around the state in an attempt to increase the overall
size and growth rate of largemouth bass in Texas .
Anglers entering fsh into the Toyota ShareLunker program receive
a free replica of their fsh, a certifcate and ShareLunker clothing and
are recognized at a banquet at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center
in Athens .

Holi eld wins 1st place at Bass N Bucks
on Sam Rayburn
What an exciting weigh in at Bass N Bucks on Sam Rayburn March 3, 2012. The leader board
continued to rise and change until the very end. Both Big Bass and overall standings were topped
throughout the tournament. Massey & Holifeld won the event with 26.03 pounds, Big Bass honors went
to Stevenson & Johnson with an 8.91 lb kicker.
It was a beautiful day that included warm temperatures in the 70s, short periods of scattered rain,
and a few wind gusts for a complete mix. This marked the fourth in a series of fve tournaments for the
Sam Rayburn Series of Bass N Bucks. From the looks of things and reports from the anglers, the male
bass were hungry and caught by the plenty. Several teams lucked out and found the hungry (and bigger)
females.
The frst big sack tallied on the scales, were from the father & son team of Jason and Ty Moorhead with
18.97 pounds. While their weight held for top 10, it was beat eight times before the scales offcially closed.
After a fght to the fnish in the fnal rankings, Craig Massey & Scott Holifeld held on for a 1st place
win with their 26.03 lb sack. We almost didnt fsh this one. That wind was pretty rough in practice!
While the wind may have been daunting, they knew they were on fsh and made the right decision to
compete. We stayed in one spot all day that was out of the wind. It was about a 200 yard stretch of
grass in 12 of water. We just went back and forth across it all day using crank baits, Carolina rigs and
rattle traps. Their decision to stay fshing and not running the lake paid off with a 1st place win and an
$8,000 check. The biggest fsh in their creel weighed 7.98 pounds, but every fsh in their limit made the
difference, as they won by less than a pound. Our last cull was within 15 minutes of having to come in.
We traded a 3.85# for a fve pounder. That last cull put them over the top for their win.
I would like to thank Matt Reed for taking us out on Sam Rayburn and showing us the lake.
Mark Stevenson and Frank Johnson won 2nd place and top spot for Big Bass. Partners on and off the
lake, Frank owns Johnson Custom Baits and Mark Stevenson is known for his Lake Fork Jigs. We started
out in the backs of coves in shallow water. That yielded them keeper fsh, but they were small ones not
what they were looking for. We decided to go to deeper, pre-spawn areas. Mostly points. After 12:00, the
bigger bass started to bite. They caught their ffth and biggest fsh that weighed 8.91 lbs. That was the
start to the bigger fsh biting. We ended up culling all of our other small ones. Their best cull added four
pounds to their weight, exchanging a two pounder for a 6 pounder, all caught on Quantum rods and
reels. Their fnal weight was 25.07 for a 2nd place fnish, but their 8.91 kicker added to their winnings as
Big Bass of the day.
1st place was won by Craig Massey & Scott Holield by less than a
pound. Their limit weighed 26.03 lbs yielding them an $8,000 payday

place overall. It was a slow day for us. We didnt catch a whole lot
of fsh, but the ones we did catch were all good ones. The biggest
part of their plan was to stay out of the wind. We stayed back in a
cove, and started out with top water and jerk baits. Those efforts
were snubbed by the fsh they were looking for, so they switched
to crank baits and Carolina rigs in 2-8 of water. We boated our
frst fsh at 8:30, and didnt catch another until 9:30. Then the bite
really picked up. At 1:00 we made our last cull of the day. They

Baits and Skinny Bear Bass Jigs.

Bobwhite quail
fact and fantasy
Bobwhite quail have come to the forefront in some wildlife circles lately. With this renewed interest
in the decline of quail populations some questions have popped back up. These are some of the more
common comments that I have seen and heard of lately.
The fre ants have destroyed the quail population. This one is fantasy. Fire ants are no worse
than any other thing out there on quail. Fire ants will normally only get the birds that already have
something wrong with them or chicks that for whatever reason are not able to keep up with Momma
when hatched. In the literature, it has been shown that there are examples of stable quail populations
with high levels of fre ants (Southeast) and declining populations with no fre ants (North).
Stocking pen raised quail will reestablish a population of birds on my property. This one is fantasy.
Research conducted in several areas has shown that there is basically no survival from year to year
from pen raised birds. In fact most pen raised birds are dead within two weeks after release. Farm
raised birds do work well for training dogs, shooting operations, and restaurants.
Quail hunting adds to the natural mortality. This one is a defnite maybe. The answer to this
depends on when during the season the hunting takes places, lattitude, and pressure. Generally, the
later in the season the more quail harvest adds to the natural mortality. This is because the more
stressful times (freezing weather) that kill the most quail have taken place. Latitude is important
given that the higher the latitude (further North) the lower the annual survival. Pressure means
the percentage of population harvested. Above a certain point, additional harvest decreases annual
survival.
Quail dont need surface water to survive. This one is fact. This is not to say that quail would not
use surface water if available, but they can derive enough water from other sources for survival.
The other sources are from the water content in food that they eat (such as berries, bugs, etc..) and
metabolic water. Metabolic water is water derived from the burning of the food for energy.
White-tailed deer will eat a quail nest. This one is fact. Most everything will eat a quail nest. As a
part of some nest research Tall Timbers Research Station in Tallahassee Florida has flmed two cases
of white-tailed deer eating quail nests. Video of this can be seen at the Tall Timbers Research Station
web site at www.talltimbers.org .
These have been some different things that many people have heard around the campfre or
coffee shop and may not have known what to think. Bobwhite quail are one of the most studied
animals out there and to learn more about them take a look at some of the excellent publications

Crelia and Goodwin win rst Texas Team
Trail event on Lake Sam Rayburn!

The frst ever Texas Team Trail presented by Cabelas was held on Lake Sam Rayburn on Saturday
March 10th. After a rainy week the lake level was up and the rain held off until around 3 p.m. just in
time for anglers to weigh in.
Weights were below average for the day, but in the end Phillip Crelia and TJ Goodwin pulled out a
win in the last fight with 25.23 lbs which included an 8.71 lbs big bass. They took home a Triton 18SE
boat with Mercury 150 ProXS motor, $750 for their big bass win with their total prize payout being
$25,750. They said they fshed in 5-8 feet of water in a little bit of grass and in stump areas. Crelia
and Goodwin used an assortment of tackle for their catches with Rat-L-Traps, jigs, and Chatterbait to
name a few. They admit that the day started slow, they only caught eight keepers and the big 8.71 lbs
bass all day. They had a limit at around 2 p.m. and culled about three times in the last 30 minutes
before weigh in. They are sponsored by Hometown Tackle and Marine, Legend and Roco Rescue.
The spot for second place was close with Ben Hogan and Kenny Moser taking home the prize with a
limit weighing 19.07 lbs beating out Stephen Johnston and Dicky Newberry who held the spot at 19.01
lbs for the prize money. Hogan and Moser took home $5,591 in prizes with $3,750 for second place,
$1,341 for Anglers Advantage, $250 in Ranger Bonus Cash, and another $250 in Mercury Bonus Cash.
They fshed in front of the bay within 300 yards down in greens with eight inch V&M Lizards and a
V&M Pork Pin. They admit that their day was also slow catching and only had three big bites all day.
They said that they only caught nine keepers all-day and fshed between four and eight feet of water.

$500 from Cabelas making their day worth a grand total of $4,262 in total prize money. They said
that they covered a lot of water. They started about halfway up the lake in four to eight feet of water
and when the TXTT camera boat was present caught about 15 bass and had a limit by 8 a.m. They
culled all throughout the day but never really had many four-pounders and culled some three-
pounders. They fshed inside grass lines from Caney Creek North with V&M Lizards, V&M Football
jigs, and Cyclone spinnerbaits. They are sponsored by Ranger, Lucas Oil, Mercury, Needmore Tackle,
V&M Cyclone Baits, Humminbird, Minn Kota, Talon, Foster Fence, Costa Sunglasses, Power Tackle
Rods, and Sun Line.
The Texas Team Trail is a new tournament trail to Texas and is off to a great start! There were
149 boats that hit the water Saturday vying for that new boat and big payouts. To fnd out more

KEEPING ANGLERS INFORMED
TOLEDO IS BACK!!! TOLEDO IS ON!!!!!

Hello, Anglers!! I could hardly wait to get to my computer to
begin this column because there is so much good news to talk
about. Having just spent the last fve days on the water and
many other days the past month, one thing is sure...Toledo is
Back! At press time, the lake level is 169 feet! What????? 169????
Yes....169!!! This represents over a 9 foot rise since late 2011
and just in time for spring. We should have a great spawn this
year as the spawn started very early on my favorite fshing hole.
Currently, early April, there are still a few bass on the beds on
south Toledo. However, there are not as many on beds as normal
for early April since the spawn started early down south as
well. For the frst time in my 40 years of fshing Toledo, we had
numerous bass on the beds in the last one-third of February.
The fast-rising water levels put an extra 2-3 feet over some
bass beds which has made locating them a little more diffcult
for sight fshing but the late spawners are bedding in the edge
of very shallow dead grass of the new shoreline, making them
very vulnerable. I do not sight fsh for bedding bass even though
it is legal but that is another subject for another time. If you

I must add, to me it shows a lack of respect for the awesome
largemouth bass to throw a bait countless times into her
bedding area where she is doing what Mother Nature wired her
to do....reproduce. Meanwhile.....
TOLEDO IS HOPPING: On the Easter theme, Toledo is
hopping and as far as I know, every boat launch on the lake,
over 100 of them, are open and operating. That is a far cry from
November 1, 2011 when only 7 were open and most of those were
launch at your own risk mode. In mid-March the TOBI (Texas
Oilmans Bass Invitational) tournament with headquarters at
Cypress Bend Resort brought several hundred anglers to the
area and really gave the local businesses a shot in the arm.
Also, with beautiful weather, they caught a lot of bass and had
an outstanding event. I heard from some of these anglers and
several of them commented on a very impressive demo ride they
had at TOBI with Skeeters new 20 and 21 FX High Performance
bass boat rigged with the new Yamaha SHO 4-stroke. Skeeters FX
Series is one subject that I can have input since I am in my third
FX and looking forward to ordering my fourth in a few months.
Yes, I am prejudiced, but I have never been in any bass rig that
surpasses the FX. Several other tournaments also returned to
The Bend in March such as the Cowboy Division of Bass Fishing
League (BFL) which was fshed out of San Miguel Park.
BOATS AND TACKLE: Anglers seem to be more up-beat about
fshing and all aspects of the sport as boat sales are up at area
boat dealers as I am personally aware of 8-10 guys who have
recently bought or ordered new boats whereas this time last
year few were buying or even shopping seriously for a new rig.
Also, tackle and baits sales are up at the two local tackle stores
that I frequent the most on south Toledo. These businesses are
Tidbits and Tackle, located near the dam at the 3-Way stop on
Highway 111, and Jeane Tackle located just north of Evans, also
on Highway 111. Both report a great increase in sales of gas,
rods and reels as well as lures/baits. Since sales are up so is the
selection of baits/tackle as these business owners feel like they
can invest in more stock with increased hope that it will move
off the shelves instead of sitting there for months. This is all a
win/win for everyone and we are thankful.
FISHING SCENE THUMBS UP!! Actually, the bass were not
bothered by the low water as we had the best fall/winter ever
for us catching both a lot of fsh as well as some heavy-weights
up to 10 lbs 13 ozs which was caught mid-December. The great
fshing continues with an early spring and lots of rain which has
moved a lot of the bass into shallow shoreline grass as well as
the submerged grassline in 6 to 14. Check out our full fshing

Rayburn Saturday Series

Anglers Quest 2012 Sam Rayburn Team Series # 3 out of The
Umphrey Pavilion at Sam Rayburn, Tx began this event with 118
teamed anglers showing up to fsh for the $7,820.00 purse. Any
team entering 6 of the 8 Sam Rayburn Team Series events will
automatically qualify for the 2-day Rayburn Championship. The top
team in points after all 8 events will be declared the Team Anglers of
the Year and will be awarded free entries to all 2013 Rayburn Team
Series events. The teams entering all 8 Rayburn Team series events
will automatically qualify for all 3 of the Lakes Team Series 2-day
Championships. Any team qualifying for any A/Q Championship will
be allowed to enter the Tournament of Champions on October
20-21 at Lake Falcon.
This 2nd event of 2012 was started at 6:10 am. Sam Rayburn
water was in good shape and 6.0 feet below normal pool level with
water temps running 54-55 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a
windy 44 degrees with a warming to 64 degrees by weigh in time.
The fsh catching was pretty good on Big Sam as there were 31 limits
brought to the scales, for a total of 177 bass at 407.06 lbs making the
average bass to weigh 2.29 lb.
The 2009-2010-2011 Angler of the year team of Rusty Clark from
Sam Rayburn, Tx & Cory Rambo from Orange, Tx run their bass
rig to north lake areas over grass to catch their bass throwing swim
baits & light Carolina rigs in 2-10 ft of water. They managed to cull
several times to fnish with 18.09 lbs for the win and made them
$2,200.00 for his day on the water.
Rodney Owens from Ragley, La & Scott Gill from DeRidder, La run
their bass rig to north lake creek areas to probe the ditches, drains
& points with grass to bring 16.22 lbs to the scales. One of their bass
was the Big Bass of the event, a fne 8.87 lber. They fnished in 2nd
and collected $1,300.00.
The team of Justin Joachimi from Bronson, Tx & Charles Evans Jr
from St Augustine, Tx fnished in 3rd with 15.59 lbs and took home
$950.00 for their day on the water.
The team of Richard Wagnon from Call, Tx & Sam Musick from
Brookeland, Tx fnished in 4th with 15.48 lbs and collected $750.00.
Rick Barns & Ronnie Bickham had 15.12 lbs to fnish in 5th and
collect $550.00 in this event. Tommy Hill & Bubba Frazier fnished
in 6th and made them selves $450.00 for their day on the water.
There was a total of 11 places paid in this event. The entire results

Need a new fshing spot? Texas Parks and Wildlife is working hard for you. Maybe you dont know
where to fsh Sam Rayburn maybe you do and a new spot would be great to add to your arsenal.
TP&W has begun an ongoing project to create and provide areas with brush piles to attract fsh
and increase angler success. We placed the fsh attractors to increase angler catch (primarily
crappie). We have folks that call and want to fsh Rayburn, but have no idea where to go. Now we
can direct them to these publically available locations/GPS coordinates. To maximize use of the fsh
attractors, we place them in areas that will be out of the wind most of the time Todd Driscoll,

March 11, 2012
Anglers Quest 2012 Sam Rayburn Individual Series # 3 out of The
Umphrey Pavilion in Sam Rayburn, Tx began this event with 24 anglers
showing up to fsh for the $2,200.00 purse. This 3rd event of 2012
was started as a trailoring event at 7:10 am. The weigh in time was
conducted at 3:30 pm. Any Individual entering 6 of the 8 Individual
series at Sam Rayburn will automatically qualify for the 2-day Rayburn
Championship. The top Individual in points after all 8 events will be
declared the Angler of the Year and will be awarded free entries to all
2013 Rayburn Individual Series events. The Individuals entering all
8 Rayburn Individual series events will automatically qualify for all 3
of the Lakes Individual Series 2-day Championships. Any Individual
qualifying for any A/Q Championship will be allowed to enter the
Tournament of Champions on October 20-21 at Lake Falcon.
Sam Rayburn water was in good shape and 6.00 feet below normal
pool level with water temps running 54-55 degrees. The weather at
takeoff was a windy 50 degrees with a warming to 63 degrees by weigh
in time. The fsh catching was decent on Big Sam as there were 7 limits
brought to the scales, for a total of 52 bass at 109.68 lbs making the
average bass weight 2.10 lbs.
Chris McCall from Brookeland, Tx run his bass rig to newly fooded
bushes and hay grass in shallow water 2-7 ft. Reporting that the
weather wasnt much better than the bite, he only had about 9 pounds
in the boat at 1:30. Then it really started raining, and between 1:30 and
2:20 he estimates catching around 20 keepers, culling all of his initial
limit with a white Santone Swim Jig, trailered with a yellow Gambler
Flappy Daddy. He fnished in 1st place with 14.36 lbs and made him
$1,000.00 for his day on the water. He would like to thank his sponsors,

Lamar Jones from Beaumont, Tx run his Bass Rig to mid lake Caney
creek areas to fnish his day in 2nd with 3 bass at 13.65 lbs, one of his

for his day on the water. Glen Kimble from Lufkin, Tx fnished 3rd with
5 bass at 12.08 lbs and collected $300.00. Rodney Dotson fnished in 4th
with 5 bass at 11.96 lbs and collected $160.00 for his day on the water.

The 2012 Bassmaster Classic returned to the Red River in Shreveport-
Bossier, Feb. 24-26, 2012 and provided plenty of excitement for all
attending. The event was billed as the Super Bowl of bass fshing and
is certainly one of the largest events ever held in this region. The Red
River fshery has hosted 10 other pro-level Bassmaster events since
2000. Many of the top anglers of the world have made their presence
known at this tournament and to win the Bassmaster Classic can indeed
be a career changing event.
The 2009 Bassmaster Classic shattered all previous attendance
records, attracting more than 137,000 fans to the Red River,
CenturyLink Center and the Shreveport Convention Center, but when
the fnal numbers are tallied the 2012 event may be just as good or
even better. The 2012 Bassmaster Classic Outdoor Expo featured 150
vendors featuring the latest in fshing tackle, new boat models and
engines, outdoor gear and was held at the Shreveport Convention
Center.
The 2012 Bassmaster Classic feld was outstanding and led by
defending champion Kevin VanDam who has been to the Classic 22
times. There were six former Bassmaster Classic champions in the feld
for 2012 Denny Brauer, Davy Hite, Michael Iaconelli, Alton Jones,
Takahiro Omori and Kevin VanDam. There were also seven former
Bassmaster Anglers of the Year in the feld Denny Brauer, Davy Hite,
Tim Horton, Michael Iaconelli, Aaron Martens, Gerald Swindle and
Kevin VanDam.
But when the smoke cleared, Chris Lane, a 36 year old pro from
Guntersville, Alabama, took home the $500,000 pot of gold and the
winners title with a three-day total of bass (5 bass per day) weighing 51
pounds and six ounces.
So how did all of this get started? Well lets take a quick stroll down
memory lane
1967 While watching a basketball game in a Jackson, Miss. motel
room in March, Ray Scott puts the idea and rules together for
the frst modern bass tournament. In June, Scott conducts the
All-American Bass Tournament on Beaver Lake, Ark. charging
106 anglers from 13 states a $100 entry fee. Stan Sloan wins
the event and earns $2,000 cash and a trip to Acapulco
1968 - The frst issue of Bassmaster Magazine is published.
1969 - Bob Cobb takes offce as the editor of Bassmaster Magazine,
replacing Ray Scott.
1970 - Roland Martin fshes his 1st BASS event, the Toledo Bend
Invitational and gets second. In his frst 25 events, Martin
wins 7 times, fnishes second 8 times.
Bill Dance becomes the frst Bassmaster Angler of the Year and
BASS has eight employees and 10,000 members.
1971 - Bobby Murray wins the frst Bassmaster Classic and collects
$10,000 in the winner-take-all championship on Lake Mead,
Nev. Classic competitors were not told the location of the
Classic until their plane was airborne.
1972 - BASS holds the frst catch-and-release tournament, the
Florida National, on Lake Kissimmee. The event is won by
Tom Mann. Today, more than 90 percent of BASS members
practice catch-and-release.
1973 - Aerators are used in livewells to conform to the new BASS
catch-and-release tournament rule.
1974 - George Perry, who caught the 22-4 world record largemouth
in 1932, dies in plane crash near Birmingham, Ala.
1975 - Angler of the Year Roland Martin is all-time leading money
winner with $47,823.
1976 - Rick Clunn wins Bassmaster Classic VI on Lake Guntersville,
Ala. the frst of his four Classic crowns.
1977 - Rick Clunn becomes the frst and only angler to win back-
to-back Bassmaster Classics, this time claiming the title on
Floridas Lake Tohopekaliga. It is the frst Classic not held on a
mystery lake. BASS announced the location of the Classic in
advance so that media and fans could make plans to attend.
1978 - Bobby Murray wins his 2nd Bassmaster Classic on Ross
Barnett Reservoir, Miss.
1979 - Hank Parker wins his frst Bassmaster Classic, taking the title
on the Texas- Oklahoma border on Lake Texoma. Ray Scott is
inducted into the International Game Fish Associations Hall
of Fame.
1980 - BASS membership reaches 350,000.
1981 - The Classic weigh-in is held indoors at the Montgomery, Ala.,
Civic Center.
1982 - BASS membership tops 400,000.
1983 - Oklahoma fsheries biologist Ken Cook turns pro after
winning $100,000 in the frst Super BASS Tournament, the
richest payout in BASS history.
1984 - Rick Clunn sets the Bassmaster Classic winning weight record
with 75 pounds, 9 ounces on the Arkansas River as he wins his
third Classic title. Honorary weighmasters at the event include
future U.S. Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
1985 - Roland Martin wins his ninth Bassmaster Angler of the Year
award.
1986 - Helen Sevier and a group of investors purchase B.A.S.S. from
Ray Scott.
1987 - Kevin VanDam fshes his frst BASS event, the New York
Invitational on the St. Lawrence River. The 19-year-old
fnishes 110th out of 311 anglers. VanDam becomes a full-
time professional angler a few years later and immediately
makes his presence known, fnishing in the top 50 of 28
consecutive BASS events.
1988 - George Bush is elected President. New York Times
correspondent Maureen Dowd reports his favorite magazine is
Bassmaster Magazine.
1989 - Hank Parker wins his second Bassmaster Classic title, this
time on the James River in VA His margin of victory is just 2
ounces, and takes top spot after a keeper bass is accidentally
dropped into the water by runner-up Jim Bitter.

1993 - Randy Dearman wins the Texas Invitational on Sam Rayburn
Reservoir using Lynch Line, a fshing line made of high-
tech synthetic material used in bulletproof vests. His victory
launches the superline revolution.
1994 - Bryan Kerchal is the 1st Federation Nation qualifer to win the
Classic. Less than fve months later he is killed in a commuter
plane crash in North Carolina.
1995 - BASS membership is 660,000, and the BASS Federation Nation
is established in 46 states, Asia and Africa.
1996 - First place prize money for Bassmaster Classic is raised from
$50,000 to $100,000
1997 - Dion Hibdon, whose father, Guido, won the Bassmaster Classic
in 1988, wins the closest Bassmaster Classic ever. He defeats
Federation Nation qualifer Dalton Bobo by a single ounce
after Bobo loses 4 ounces to a dead fsh penalty.
1998 - Guido Hibdon wins at the James River, Richmond, VA
1999 - Mark Tyler catches a 14-pound, 9-ounce largemouth bass at
the California Western Invitational on the California Delta. It
is the largest bass ever caught in BASS competition.
2000 - 54 years old Woo Daves becomes the oldest angler to win the
Bassmaster Classic.
2001 - ESPN, The Worldwide Leader in Sports, purchases B.A.S.S...
Kevin VanDam wins his frst Bassmaster Classic, claiming the
crown on the Louisiana Delta.
2002 - Rick Clunns streak of 28 consecutive Bassmaster Classic
appearances ends
2003 - Michael Iaconelli wins Classic on the Louisiana Delta, New
Orleans, Louisiana
2004 - Takahiro Omori wins Bassmaster Classic XXXIV on North
Carolinas Lake Wylie, becoming the frst foreign born angler
to claim fshings biggest title.
2005 - Rick Clunn wins ESPNs Greatest Angler Debate. Roland
Martin fnishes second.
2006 - First place prize money for the Bassmaster Classic is raised
from $200,000 to $500,000.
2007 - Rick Clunn fshes in his 31st Bassmaster Classic.
2008 - BASS celebrates its 40th anniversary.
2009 - The 2009 Bassmaster Classic in Shreveport-Bossier City, La.,
attracts more than 137,000 fans to the competition and
the associated events. The throngs of crowds shatter the old
Classic attendance records by more than 50,000.
2010 - Kevin Van Dam uses a Strike King Red Eye Shad on Lay Lake,
Alabama to claim his third Bassmaster Classic trophy.
2011 - Kevin Van Dam wins again on the Louisiana Delta.
2012 - Chris Lane wins the prestigious event with 51 pounds -
6 ounces.

TOURNAMENT
Crappie Fever is Here Again!! The Sabine
River Authority is proud to be hosting the sixth
annual Crappie for Cash tournament on
Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Cypress Bend Park
Pavilion. $3000.00 guaranteed in payout plus
100% payback of all entry fees! The Sabine River
Authority is hosting this non-proft tournament
for economic development. There are 2 divisions
this year, Open Division and Youth Division.
The Open Division must be at least one adult.
The Youth Division must be one adult and one
child between the ages of 6 and 16 years old. The
prize money will be pro-rated by the number of
entries into each division. If you are fshing with
a youth you can choose not to enter the Youth
Division and enter the Open Division. The entry
fee is $125.00 per team, this includes the big
fsh entry. A team may consist
of either one or two people. Live
or artifcial bait may be used.
Crappie must be weighed at the
offcial Crappie for Cash weigh-
in site located at Cypress Bend
Park. All contestants are subject
to polygraph testing. Since this
a family oriented tournament
no alcoholic beverages are
allowed during tournament
hours or until all polygraphs
have been completed. There will
be a Mandatory rules meeting
held on Friday April 27th at
Cypress Bend Park Pavilion at
7:00 pm. You must attend this meeting to receive

Patriots Challenge Open Fishing Tournament
Won by Ronnie Milner and Mark Couch
Honor and Remember Flag Campaign Announced
Cloudy and windy conditions welcomed anglers to last weekends Patriots Challenge Open. It was a
roadrunner tournament with teams trailering to take advantage of the windy conditions. The recent
surge of fresh water over the past several days was expected to throw a few new pieces into the fguring
out Mother Natures bass puzzle. It did not take long for Ronnie Milner and Mark Couch to take early
control of the tournament. As they eased into their frst spot Ronnie decided to throw a top water to
begin the day. On his second cast the yellow magic exploded off the water and a short time later the
guys secured the 8.41 lb. big girl. She is beautiful with no sign of using her tail to fan a nest yet. they
continued to work the area using wacky worms and carolina-rigged baby brush hogs to build their
total and before 10:30 they had their 18.10 lb sack that bested the rest of the feld. N Dee Williams and
Kyle Rawlins came in second with 15.87 and Scott Morehead and John Hale fnished third with an
11.63 lb limit of spring time large mouths.
At the weigh in Buck Collins from the Wounded Warrior Association of East Texas presented an
Honor and Remember Flag to Jackson Hill Marina and asked the group for their support in petitioning
the Texas Legislature to offcially adopt the Honor and Remember Flag as part of the National drive
to create a new National symbol of gratitude and respect to those who gave their lives in the service of
their Country.
On December 29th George Anthony Lutz II (Tony) was killed by a snipers bullet while he was on
patrol in Fallujah, Iraq. As the family endured the shock, emotional agony and overwhelming loss
of Tony they also found commonality and comfort with the families of other fallen heroes. It is every
families quest for fnal acceptance and to be at peace knowing that their loved one did not die in
vain and that they would not be forgotten. When Tonys father George Lutz discovered that there is no
universally recognized symbol that specifcally acknowledges the men and women of our U.S. Armed
Forces who never made it home. Consequently, the Honor and Remember Flag was conceived. Nine
States have already adopted the Honor and Remember Flag while Texas and eight other States have
endorsed it and twenty additional States are currently in process.
The unique feature of the Honor and Remember Flag is the ability to personalize it and the goal is
to place a personalized fag in the hands of the immediate families of every man and woman who died
in Military service to America.
Terry and Connie Sympson of Jackson Hill Marina is organizing a local effort to identify fallen
heroes from East Texas. As part of their ongoing Patriots Challenge fund raising Jackson Hill is
planning on Honoring and Remembering these fallen heroes by having each boat at their September
Championship carry the their name and to use a portion of the money raised by the tournament to
purchase fags for each of their immediate families. If you would like to help in any way, donate or
submit a name of a family member who gave their life so that we may Honor and Remember them

caught 13-pound-plus largemouth bass to lend or donate the fsh to TPWD for spawning purposes.

To qualify for a fberglass replica from The Toledo Bend Lake Association and Toledo Town & Tackle
you must comply with the following rules:
1. Fish must weigh a minimum of 10 lbs. All fsh over 12 lbs. caught between June 1st-May 30th fall
under the Toledo Bend Lake Associations Guidelines.
2. Fish must be legally caught in Toledo Bend Reservoir by sporting means; ex. rod and reel, pole
and hook. Any fsh caught by hand line, set line, net, trap, seine or snagging is not eligible.
3. Fish must be weighed on ASGS approved scales at one of the following locations: Toledo Town
and Tackle at intersection LA 191 and LA 6, Pirates Cove Marina, Huxley Bay marina, Newells
Fishing World, or weighed on offcial scales during a fshing tournament held on Toledo Bend
Reservoir.

4. Anglers must present their fshing licenses or proof of exemption to the witness at the time of
weighing.
5. Angler must agree to release their fsh to Toledo Town & Tackle to be released back into the lake
alive.
6. A designated witness at one of the above locations must verify and attest to the weight of fsh and
the live release of fsh back into Toledo Bend Reservoir.
7. A fsherman receiving a replica as part of tournament winnings will not be awarded a duplicate
replica.
To qualify for a fberglass replica from the Toledo Bend Lake Association you must comply with the
following rules:
1. The program is limited to Largemouth Bass weighing 10 lbs. or more that are legally caught in
Louisiana waters from June 1st-May 30th of the current year.
2. A replica of the lunker and a certifcate of appreciation will be given to the fsherman after his/
her transfer of all the rights for the use and ownership of the accepted lunker to TBLA.
3. An TBLA Inland Fisheries Biologist will be responsible for accepting a fsh into the program,
based on his judgement that the fsh will be able to survive.
4. The fsh must be alive and in good condition.
These replicas are always distributed at the McDonalds Big Bass Splash at Cypress Bend Park.
HANDLING TIPS:
Transfer the fsh to a well-aerated livewell or igloo cooler, out of light sunlight.
Do not hold the fsh out of water longer than 30 seconds.
Go Immediately to an offcial weigh site to have your fsh weighed.
Always wet your hands before handling the fsh. Use both hands; one frmly grasping the lower
jaw and the other supporting its weight just behind the belly, or use a knotless, fne mesh, soft
net, or plastic weigh bag to transfer the fsh.

April has arrived! Weve been getting
some much needed rain and the lake has
been coming up. The water has moved
into the feld grass and bean brushes
that grew around the shoreline when
the water was down. All that vegetation
is now making some great habitat
for the bass to use. Flipping into little
holes and pockets comes to mind and
that is always a lot of fun. If we get the
April showers it could be awesome with
the water coming up even more. The
temperatures should start to stabilize
and well see some fsh start to get into
a stable pattern before going into the
summer places. There will be fsh up
shallow and some deep, this makes for
great days to be on the lake fshing. Just
getting out, enjoying the beauty of the
lake is wonderful, and getting away from
the chaos of life helps.
There should be a lot of fsh still up
shallow with some still moving in to
spawn. One bait that comes to mind
when these fsh are up shallow is the
Stanley spinner bait. The colors I would
start with are white or chartreuse. The
blades are the next thing to look at,
sometimes they like big willow blades
and other times they want smaller blades
with less thump. This is just something
to play with as water colors and weather
conditions change from sunny to
cloudy.
The lipless crankbaits are another
good bait to use this time of year. I
have been using some Strike Pro lipless
crankbaits and running it over the grass,
this really heats things up. Some of these
fsh just attack the bait! With these two
baits you can cover a lot of water and
have a lot of fun.
If youre not into all that chunk and
wind and want to slow down, soft plastics
are the way to go. The senko and wacky
worms catch more than their share of
fsh all year long and can be a lot of fun.
Try watermelon red and green pumpkin
as a starting point for your colors. E2
Bait Company makes some great baits
like the Doodle Bug and Needle Worms
that work great this time of year. Work
them slowly through all the grass and
bean brush.
Now lets get to the Texas rig. I like to
keep mine on the light side if the wind will
let me do so. This way the bait will just
slide over the grass. There are all kinds
of creature baits and lizards to use. The
Doodle Bug from E-2 Bait Company has
been working great on bass. Sometimes
its something different that hasnt been
seen that will get the bass to bite.
Now the Carolina rig and jig, if the
bass are up shallow, what do I use these
for? There are still a lot of fsh on the
ledges around the spawning areas, some
going and some coming. This is a good
way to pick up a fsh, pull the Carolina
rig off the edges into deeper water.
The Stanley oz football is one of my
favorites. One way to use it is to crawl it
across the bottom, the other is to work it
around some kind of structure.
There should be a lot of good fsh
caught this month. The ones that have
spawned will move out and stop on
points and ledges before heading to the
summer hideouts. If you catch a trophy
bass get some good pictures, weight
and measurements and set her free. A
good taxidermy shop; like Lake Fork
Taxidermy, wont need the fsh to make
a replica that youll be proud of. Trophy
bass are hard to come by. Most people
take them home and show everyone a
DEAD FISH in the cooler. What I like to do
is go back, take my friends, and try and
catch her again in the same place. The
excitement is wonderful when they try to
catch her again. A good taxidermist can
make a replica of the Bass you caught
without killing the fsh.

I think we missed spring and went
straight to summer. Look at what the
rains have done to the lake. As of print
Big Sam is only 3 foot low and the fsh
and fshermen love it!
Bass - Fishing has been good
this spring with all the new and old
vegetation. You can fnd a lot of fsh
shallow in the old Johnson grass that is
now underwater. Using a wacky worm in
watermelon red or shad color fukes over
the grass is producing a lot of numbers.
A lot of post spawn bass can be caught on
Texas rig and Carolina rig craw worms
and lizards.
Crappie - Your crappie poles should
be bending! You can catch crappie
shallow in the backs of coves. Look for
old lily pad stems and any old weeds that
are now underwater. Some lures that are
working are Roadrunners in 1/8 oz size
with black body and chartreuse skirt.
One of my favorites is a Stanley Wedge
Tail minnow white with a chartreuse
tail. Dont think all crappie are shallow,
you can fnd some around your old
brush piles.
Bream - Take a kid fshing for these
fun fsh. The bream will start moving
up, getting their beds ready. Keep an eye
out for those circles in the sand. Once
you fnd them you can use small plastic
grubs. For the best results use worms
and crickets. Have Fun!!!!

TOBI donates $225,000 to exas Childrens
Hospital from 22nd Annual ournament

The 22nd Annual Toledo Oilmans Bass Invitational took place on Friday Mar. 16 and Saturday Mar. 17;
the tournament hosted 662 teams with a total count of 1,324 anglers fshing for a cause. This year the TOBI
crew was able to donate a whopping $225,000 to Texas Childrens Hospital making a year to date amount of
donations $2,625,000 over the last 22 years.
On Friday night the check was presented to Dr. Michael Braun with a very special guest in tow, a child
currently being treated at the medical center named Ray Rodriguez and his family. Braun is the Chief of
Service in the Renal Care (Kidney Center) Facility at Texas Childrens Hospital.
The tournament was founded in 1990 and is held every year on the third weekend in March at Cypress Bend
Park in Many, Louisiana. TOBIs philanthropy is the Texas Childrens Hospital Renal Unit, where the money
they donate goes to patient care and research in pediatric kidney and urinary tract diseases and disorders.
They also hold an annual event where fshermen take patients, who are able to go, fshing and spend the day
with them.
Alan Stubblehead, President of TOBI, said that the main goal of TOBI is to have fun, fsh, and raise money
for Texas Childrens Hospital. He also said that on Friday night they gave away other donations to local entities
such as the Toledo Bend Lake Association ($1,000,) the Sabine River Authority ($750,) and Army Bass Anglers
for Wounded Warriors ($1,000.)
Stubblehead said that the tournament was also sponsored by Skeeter boats, who provided free rides and the
possibility to win $1,000 in a drawing; Skeeter also donates a boat that is given away in a door prize drawing
on Saturday night.
TOBI is an invitational only tournament for the exploration, production companies, and service providers
in the oil feld and supports these entities with the goal of fnding more oil and gas for our nation and reduce
imports from foreign countries.
Several raffes are also held including those for deer hunts, exotic hunts, a fshing trip on Lake Fork, and a
big screen tv. There is also a Big Bass raffe for $1,000 and had someone broken a TOBI record on weight they
would have walked away with $5,000 additional money compliments of NewTech Global.
TOBIs main cause is the Texas Childrens Renal Care Unit and a program called the Quality of Life
Program which allows the patients to go to camp, have prom, a Christmas Party, and a fshing trip; essentially,

it provides a chance for the kids to make it through their illness and maintain a sense of normalcy
especially for teenagers who are spending more time receiving treatments than being able to hang out
with their friends and do normal things that young adults would do such as prom.
Stubblehead said that they have now also been able to garner a dedicated psychologist in the Renal
Care Unit that has helped so many patients and their families going through the stresses and grief
that more than likely accompanies a childs stint at Texas Childrens Hospital.
One patient, Jackie Benavides, was diagnosed with kidney failure at the age of 18 and is a dialysis
patient in the Renal Care Unit at Texas Children wrote a letter to TOBI that was read on Friday night
thanking them for their work, telling her story, and how benefcial the Quality of Life Program was for
her and how it helped her through her dialysis.
On Thursday night a press conference was held on the local radio station in Many, LA and included
many special guests including the Town of Many Mayor, Ken Freeman, SRA Chairman (Louisiana),
Ned Goodeaux, Toledo Bend Lake Association President, Gaynell Goodeaux, Sabine Parish Chamber of
Commerce President, Lewis McBryde, Sabine Parish Chamber Director, Garland Anthony, and Tourist
Commission Director, Linda Curtis Sparks.
Timothy and Brenda Ashee were the top anglers on day one of the tournament bringing in a limit
weighing 22.47 lbs with a 6.80 lbs big bass, while Michael Trahan and Craig Landry came in a close
second with 22.13 lbs and a 9.58 lbs big bass in their sack, they had the biggest fsh on the frst day
with its only competitor coming in at 8.16 lbs.

Forrest Vick and George Mahfouz took the top spot on day two with a 23.64 lbs limit, while Ron
Grady and Chris Glass took the number two spot on the second day with 20.26 lbs. Warren and Wayne
Maxwell weighed in their only fsh for the day and ended up with biggest bass for day two totaling
9.53 lbs.
In the end, Vick and Mahfouz won the tournament with 35.39 total pounds with just one shy of the
two-day limit. Chris Murphy and Mike McNeer landed in the second spot with 10 fsh weighing a total
of 34.52 lbs and Bill Pippen and Monte Nevils came in third with 34.26 lbs.
The Army Bass Anglers Association was also present at TOBI with a booth and guys ready to talk
about their causes. Major Cody Roberson said that they have three programs: Returning Heroes Home,
Heroes on the Water, and Veterans Outdoors. Roberson said that he was really happy that TOBI let
them come out and raise money for their causes and thanks them as well. Their slogan is Support.
Defend. Fish. Their website states, ArmyBassAnglers and the Coalition are involved in three fshing
tournaments dedicated to taking Soldiers fshing. The team volunteers their personal time to support
Take a Soldier Fishing each year on Belton Lake and Truman Lake. The whole premise behind the
events is an opportunity for the local angling and business community to thank these Heroes for their
service and sacrifces.
The website states, Annually, Choke Canyon Reservoir is the host location for Fishing for Freedom,
a tournament that pairs local fshermen with wounded soldiers in the San Antonio area for a day of
tournament bass fshing on an awesome fshery just for them. All three events are heavily supported
and only made possible through the generosity of local businesses, volunteers, and caring local and
regional anglers. There are just a few of the ways the team and organization lives up to the SUPPORT
Pillar in its three pronged mission statement. Roberson said that most of the soldiers involved are
mostly active duty, Members of the organization are currently deployed with several other scheduled
to make their second or third deployments next year.
Roberson says that although its tough for them to uphold their obligations in charity work that
their military background creates a take care of each other mentality. He explains, Each angler has
a battle buddy that he fshes two-man team tournaments with and when one member of the team is
gone, the other rucks up and carries the load for both of them, this is by design and is ingrained in
all our military training.
Roberson also says that they fsh all over the country on the World Fishing Network and on the
toughest National team tournament trails and use these experiences as combat multipliers to
promote their three causes. You can catch them on the Sportsmans Channel with a show called
Force on Force, check you local listings for times and guide information.
After the tournament food was prepared and served by Hempell and TX Marine brought the boats to
be given away and Foy Motors donated a truck.

phone-based scoring technology developed by ESPN, and how
to make minor camera adjustments for the BassCast onboard
cameras. Once you commit to being a Bassmaster Marshal, your
attendance is mandatory for Days 1 & 2 of the competition.
Participation in Day 3 is optional.
2012 Marshal Obligations
Marshals are required to have knowledge of BASSTrakk
operation. BASSTrakk operation to be explained in
tournament briefng by tournament offcials. Pros and
Marshals are to be honest and timely with catch and weight
reports. Any pro who, in the judgment of tournament offcials,
advises Marshals to neglect or false report catches or weights
may be penalized. Marshals are not allowed to carry GPS
systems or use cell phones during competition unless directed
by tournament offcials. Marshals are allowed to carry still
cameras.
Marshals must sign an entry form acknowledging
understanding of B.A.S.S. rules and report to tournament
offcials all rules violations or suggestions of rules violations.
Marshals should bring a personal PFD to each event bearing
no conficting tournament trail logos.
Marshals should bring their own foul weather gear,
sunscreen, food and drink. Elite Series pros by rule must have
storage space available for Marshals to store gear, snacks and
drinks

Final results:
The Bud Light Trail Toledo/Rayburn division held its second tournament of the season on Sunday,
Mar. 18 at Cassels Boykin in Zavalla, Texas. About 21 teams fshed the event, but despite the great
weather anglers had a tough time fnding the fsh they needed to pull out big numbers on the scales.
Tommy Rascoe and Alton Powell took the lead and won the tournament with a limit weighing 13.23
lbs which included a nice 3.30 pounder in the bag. Rascoe said that they fshed in the grassy areas
around the bank with soft plastics. He said that he and Powell caught fsh all day just couldnt get any
big ones, they culled several times. They caught their frst fsh at around 8:15 that morning, and just
had a tough day on the water with the wind picking up some throughout the day. They broke off a big
fsh early in the morning. They would like to thank Needmore Tackle, AS&W Farms, Cheeks Marine,
and Toledo Tackle.
N.D. Williams and Tim Murdock took second place with a limit weighing 12.55 lbs with their biggest
fsh weighing 3.85 lbs. Williams and Murdock fshed in shallow hay grass and threw swim baits and
worms, as well as just about everything that they could to try to catch a big fsh but like the other
anglers out there that day, they had a hard time as well. They said it was a slow day and that they had
actually done a lot better the day before in another tournament at Jackson Hill where they also won
second place. The guys also said that they were lucky just to have fve fsh to bring to the scales and
were only able to cull once. They would like to thank the Boat Center and Stanley Jigs.
Third place and Big Bass went to James Bass and Dwain Burns with an overall weight of 12.15 lbs
and a big fsh weighing 7.40 lbs. They said that they caught their biggest one around 11:30 a.m. and
caught only fve keepers all day despite catching about 20-25 fsh throughout the tournament. The
frst fsh they hooked was a pretty big one they claim, but it slipped away from them. They also said
that they caught a lot of little fsh but just really no good quality
keepers. Their account claims that it has been tough on bigger
fsh lately. They fshed in fooded areas and shallow fats with
a Swimming Senko and Crawl Tube. They would like to thank
Bandit Buster, Dobbins Rods, and Shimano.

groW your oWn ButterFlies

Master Gardeners Gene and Martha Hamilton have attended
many specialist training programs on butteries and how to
create buttery gardens. Many children enjoyed the Monarch
buttery release with the Hamiltons at Fall Fest in Jasper last
year.
At their home on the Angelina River, they catch and release
Monarch butteries with special tags that help scientists track
the annual migration of Monarchs from Canada to their winter
home in Mexico.
To attract butterfies to your garden, plant a variety
of nectar and host plants.
Lawns, no matter how green, have nothing to offer nectar-loving
creatures like butterfies and hummingbirds.
Host plants are where butterfies lay their eggs. Each different
species of butterfy requires specifc plants to nurture their young.
Even though the caterpillars that hatch eat holes in the leaves, the
butterfy and host plant are adapted to each other, and the plant will
recover quickly and be ready to host the next generation.
So, if you have nectar plants and host plants you will have
more butterfies.
You should plan your butterfy garden in a sunny area that is
protected from strong winds. Butterfies cannot fy until the suns
warmth heats their bodies.
Make sure to prepare the soil and ensure good drainage for your
plants. Then plant a variety of nectar and host plants. You can
group varieties and colors of plants together for an eye-catching
display that you will enjoy too.
Butterfies will come to any area that has a large nectar source.
That way they do not have to expend a lot of energy to feed. Be sure
to select plants that will bloom at different times of the year so there
is always a food source blooming from spring to autumn.
Some butterfies like to feed on taller plants, so its good to have
plants that are two to three feet tall, such a lantana, milkweed and
salvia as your mainstays. In front you can plant asters, cone fowers
and black-eyed Susans. Put the tallest plants like butterfy bush at
the back.
Zinnias attract butterfies, are easy to grow from seed, and come
in many varieties from dwarf to more than four feet tall; frequent
cutting keeps them bushy and blooming all summer.
Top butterfy-attracting fowers are members of the sunfower
and verbena families. Almost any plants in these groups will attract
butterfies and hummingbirds.
A good way to make your plant selections is to visit a
nursery or garden center on a warm sunny day and watch
what attracts butterfies.
When designing your garden, be sure to have a source of water,
such as a clay pot saucer. Make a puddling area by flling the saucer
with sand and keeping it moist. Butterfies like to land and lap up
water and minerals from the sand. Include a few large fat rocks for
them to bask and warm their wings and bodies.
Watch how the sun travels across your garden area and then
plant a few sturdy shrubs and trees for butterfies to roost in on
windy or rainy days. These should be on the north side or a little
ways away from the garden where they dont shade the blooming
plants too much.
Host plants let you observe the life cycle as butterfies lay eggs
which hatch into caterpillars. Then caterpillars create a cocoon
called a chrysalis, which hatches into new butterfies. Host plants
are specifc to each species of butterfy.
Black swallowtails like herbs such as dill, parsley and fennel.
Giant swallowtail like citrus trees, and the caterpillars camoufage
themselves to look like bird droppings. Monarchs need milkweed,
and the favorite of the gulf fritillary is passionfower vine.
Never never use insecticides or pesticides in your butterfy
garden or you will kill the butterfies and their larva. If you
have aphids or other pests, try mixing a few drops of mild dish
detergent in a spray bottle and spray on top and bottom of leaves.
Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and then hose off with water.
A good source for information on butterfy gardening is the North
American Butterfy Association, www.naba.org. Another webpage,
http://easttexasgardening.tamu.edu/tips/misc/butterfy.html,
provides a list of plants suitable for East Texas gardens. When you
see USDA hardiness zones for plants, Jasper and the lakes area are
zone 8, south Jasper County may be as warm as zone 9.

Toledo Bend is almost
up to full pool with
the recent rains weve
received. In fact, the lake
came up three feet from
March 6th to March 21st.
As of this report the lake
is 170.32ft. msl and should rise at least another foot
if not more from the run-off. All the major boat lanes
are passable.
April is usually a transition month with a lot of fsh
already spawned and moving back into deeper water.
Some bass will still be on the beds and in shallow water
while others will have spawned and will be moving
back out to deeper water. Moving off the beds they will
try to fnd a comfortable environment where they can
recuperate from the spawn and gradually move into
their summer haunts. The bass will migrate along the
creeks, ditches and secondary points; so concentrate
in these areas especially areas that have some type of
structure or cover. A variety of baits will be productive
from top water plugs, buzz baits, spinner baits, frogs,
jerk & swim baits, shallow to mid diving crank baits,
fnesse plastics and your variety of worms, lizards and
jigs depending on the area you target your fsh.
Usually in the latter part of April the Bream will
start moving into shallow water for their spawn. An
ultra-lite spinning rig, cane or glass pole and a bucket
of crickets or worms will surely fll up a chest of big ole
bream. Look for honey-cone circles in the shallows
to locate the beds.
Look for the Crappie in the backs of the coves and
pockets. If you dont fnd them shallow, follow the
points and bends in the creeks as they head back out
to deep water.
This has been one of the best Spring White Bass
seasons Ive ever had. In the last two months there were
only a couple days we didnt limit out in a matter of a
couple hours and that was due to high wind conditions
keeping us from moving around. Work the main lake
sand-bars with oz slab spoons or tail spinners.

Bass~ Excellent!
There are lots of fsh
on beds and on points.
Start your day in 6 to
8 ft concentrating on
inside grass lines and
around fooded hay
grass. Use a 3/8 oz
Chatterbait rigged with a Lake Fork Magic Shad on it
in watermelon red pearl belly or a 3/16 oz TX rigged
Wave Lobster in green pumpkin red color. Then as
the day warms move into spawning areas and throw
a Wave Tiki Stick rigged wacky style in Chrismas tree
or watermelon gold fake colors or a black gold orange
bellied Rogue. The best set up for the Chatterbait is a
TFO 73 medium action rod and 20# fuoro carbon
line on 6.4:1 reel. Fish your Texas rig on a TFO 73
med/heavy rod with the same size line and reel. For
wacky worms switch to a TFO 7 medium spinning rod
with 30# FINS Windtamer braid. Make sure to have a
good pair of polarized glasses like the Flying Fisherman
Sea Stars to see bedding fsh and remember to spray all
baits with KICK N BASS
Bream- Excellent! These fsh are starting to spawn.
Look for honey combed areas on sandy bottoms in 2-6
ft of water. The best bait to use is crickets.
Crappie~ Excellent! Target the areas with 12 to 18
ft. of water over the grass and use Road Runners in
black and chartreuse or a red and chartreuse tube jig.
Remember the new size and bag limit for Toledo Bend
is no length limit and 25 per person on both sides of
the lake.
Catfsh~ Good. Fish in shallow fats at the back of
creeks using liver and trot line minnows.

Hello, anglers. It has
been a fun-flled spring
so far on my favorite
fshing hole and the
good news is that fshing
will continue to be
productive in April with a variety of patterns and lures.
On hard baits, we are catching bass on Stanley Vibra
Wedge and Vibra Shaft double willowleaf spinnerbaits. I
like to have at least one copper/gold blade, especially on
cloudy days. The Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap is also catching
bass with best results in slightly stained conditions
with Toledo Gold a great color in low-light conditions
and blue/silver in bright conditions. Also, mid-diving
crankbaits are also catching bass with the top crankbait
being Berkley Frenzy Diver (discontinued) as well as
Bill Normans DLN (Deep Little N). We are working
these on grassy ridges and outside edges of grasslines
in 6 to 14 feet. Good colors are fretiger and sexy shad
or blue/silver.
Soft plastics continue to reign with the Carolina rig a
main stay in my boat catching some really quality bass
with Berkley Power Lizards and Havocs new 4 Craw
Fatty. We are starting to fsh some of our time on post
spawn patterns (12 to 30 ft) targeting bass on ledges
and points, especially in the middle of the day. However,
there are still lots of bass in shallow water where we are
catching fsh on wacky rigged Berkley Havoc Bottom
Hoppers and Senkos, TX rigged Bottom Hoppers and
Trick Worms working them very slowly most of the time.
In addition, we are rigging a Berkley Jerk Shad, Senko
or Fluke on a TX rig with no weight and targeting the
bank back to 8 ft. Finally, deep running crankbaits,
such as Normans DD22s and Fat Free Shad are my top
choices for late spring suspending bass. The new silent
model DD22 is one of my most often used crankbaits
in late spring.
CRAPPIE: Strolling your way to a fsh-fry is the way
most perch-jerkers are getting it done. With the crappie
spawn basically over, the majority of the fsh are holding
in mid-depths just off the edge of submerged grass in 6
to 18 feet. Anglers are using the trolling motor to slowly
drag small jigs, Road Runners and Beetle Spins on the
outside edge of the grass and drop-offs. Some crappie
are also starting to show up in man-made brush-piles
in 18 to 25 feet with live shiners the best bait. If you
crappie fsh with any regularity, you should not go
hungry this month.

Hollingsworth & Hunt win over
$26,000 at Bass Champs on
Sam Rayburn with 25.05 lbs

Skeeter Bass Champs tournament trail held its 4th of fve East Texas division events on Sam Rayburn
on March 24, 2012. Well over 200 teams came to fsh for a part of $61,450 up for grabs in cash and prizes
for the top 28 teams. Rick Hollingsworth and Eric Hunt brought in over 25 pounds to win the highly
coveted and guaranteed 1st place $20,000 check. They cashed in on a whole lot more, going home with
over $26,000.
It had been a gorgeous week and continued thru tournament weekend. With temps in the 80s some
of the frst sun burns of the year were seen at weigh in. Sam Rayburn is in excellent shape as recent rains
still continue to pump more water in to Big Sam, opening all boat launches on the lake and nearing full
pool.
The elevating lake levels and muddy to murky water had contenders scrambling to fnd bass. They too
are on the move, some still in pre-spawn, many others in post spawn and trying to transition with the
lake levels themselves.
Hollingsworth & Hunt had located about fve different spots to hit during the tournament. They
started out at a ditch, lined with brush and grass. We fshed the edge of the ditch, starting shallow in
the morning about 3-4 deep with a watermelon red Senko. The day did not start out right for them, as
they broke off their frst fsh and it was a nice one. We stayed there and put a limit together. They were
really biting good and we caught a lot of fsh. They had a decent limit by 11:30, then left that spot to try
a few others. They needed a kicker. After trying some of those other spots, we decided to head back to
our frst area. It was a good call. At 2:00 Eric got the bite they needed. He landed their kicker, weighing
8.72 lbs! That was our last cull of the day. Their kicker ended up winning Big Bass of the tournament
for $1,000. Adding the rest of their limit to the scales, they had 25.05 lbs for a 1st place win! Bass Champs
presented them with the guaranteed 1st place check for $20,000. They were also fshing out of a qualifed
Skeeter Boat and won that bonus for an additional $5,000. Their total winnings were $26,200. Not bad for
a day on the lake! We would really like to thank our families. They always support and encourage us.
Timothy Griffn fshed alone in this event, and won 2nd place with a 21.94 lb limit. This time of year
I usually fsh humps on Rayburn. This time I stayed on a point that staged from 16 to 10, all the way to
5 deep. His day started out well. Fishing with a crank bait, he caught two very nice ones early on. After I
caught those, I caught an amazing number of little ones! Changing baits to a Carolina rigged magnum
fnesse worm, he backed out to a little deeper water, 5-8. I found that the smaller fsh were in less than
4 of water. Once I started fshing deeper, I started catching better fsh again. The area he stayed in was a
200 yard long stretch. It was just a big drain. All the fsh I caught looked like they had already spawned.
His kicker was a close contender for Big Bass, weighing 8.39 lbs. Tim won the 2nd place check for $5,000.

3rd place was won by Rusty Clark and Cory Rambo with an 18.75 lb limit. We didnt do anything
special, just grinded it out. They picked one spot and stuck to it all day using old faithful Carolina rigs.
It was a staging point, 8-11 deep. Rusty caught our frst solid fsh, about 4 pounds, at 9:00. We already
had several smaller fsh in the livewell. At noon, things heated up as Cory added a 5 pounder and three
over 3 pounds to their limit. We probably culled 10 times today. It was a good day. They won $3,000 for
their 3rd place fnish and would like to thank Ranger boats, Golden Triangle Industries, Castaway rods
and G& G.

The Hawg Hunters Bass Club of Lake Charles held their March tournament on Toledo Bend,
on March 3rd. A drop in temperature by 30 degrees the night prior to the tournament, along
with strong winds and sleeting rain made for a diffcult day on the lake for most. Overall,
weights were down from what was expected.
Using Carolina rigged fukes, the team of Frank Little and Tracy Bowling managed to put
together a fve fsh limit that weighed 11.34 lbs which bested the feld of anglers to take frst
place.
Guy Robertson and Trent Pharris used crank baits to secure a fve fsh limit that weighed
11.21 lbs which was good for second place. Third place was taken by Fred Berger and David
Bushnell. The third place team used senko
type baits, and spinner baits for their catch,
which weighed 10.75 lbs.
The team of Dean Jones and Jeff Latham
weighed in the big bass of the tournament, a
4.67 pounder which was caught by Jones on
a jig.
The next Hawg Hunter tournament is
scheduled for April 21st on Toledo Bend.
Welcome to the sophomore year of the (409) Bass Club! Were starting off the season with 65
members, many of them frst time members, and we still have more wanting to join. Were expecting
a great season, some fun fshing, and some lasting memories!

16 years old): Logan Blackmon, Reese Durand, Emily Erb, and Dillan Metreyeon. We all want you to
enjoy the days on the lake that you spend fshing with your family, and hope these club tournaments
help ignite a passion for a great sport that will last a lifetime!
Lets talk about the February tournament. It was a fairly tight fnish; less than a pound separated
the 5th place team from the 1st place team. The 1st place team, brothers Eric Van Horn and Marcus
Van Horn, weighed in their best fve at 15.58 pounds. The 2nd place team of Ben Adams and
Bubba Courts was hot on their heels with 15.40 pounds. Both teams reported their limits coming
on rattletraps and brush hogs. Brian Carpenter and Scott Eastman were less than a quarter-pound
behind Ben and Bubba, wrapping up 3rd place with 15.19 pounds. Chester Sams teamed up with his
fshing buddy Stephen Ensign on Wednesday to take 4th place with 14.90 pounds, with 6.85 pounds
of that being contributed by Stephen in the form of the big bass of the tournament, worth $290.
Garry Osborn and Bryan Lohr were the last ones to offset some of their tournament costs with their
winnings from their 5th place position. Nine door prizes were given out, from our sponsors Daleys
Hunt and Fish, Simon Outftters, R1 Bass, and Bass Kandi. Please drop by these places of business

place winner with a fve fsh limit weighing 12.80 lbs.
A total of 107 fsh were caught weighing 230 lbs for an average fsh weight of 2.20 lbs.
Congratulations Tammy Davis for catching an 11.24 lb bass of a life time! All bass anglers,
wherever they are, dream of catching a 10 plus pound bass but unfortunately only a few
actually accomplish that goal. Tammys excitement at the club weigh-in gave everyone a special
appreciation for her accomplishment and for those who are still pursuing the 10 pound goal

LUFKIN, Texas Chad Wiley of Pineville, La., weighed a fve-bass limit totaling 25 pounds, 8 ounces
Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Cowboy Division event at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. For
his victory, Wiley earned $4,632.
It was a last-minute decision to go deep, but it paid off, said Wiley. I had pre-fshed shallow and I
really couldnt get nothing going. The fsh were biting, but they were the smaller males and only around 2
pounds apiece. I knew I could easily catch 10 pounds fshing shallow, but that wouldnt be enough to win.
So I swung for the fence and completely changed my strategy and went deep.
The decision turned out to be a good one for Wiley, as he won by 5 pounds over his closest competitor.
I fshed deep off the main river ledges, Wiley continued. I would fnd certain ledges that would serve
as a ditch for late spawners coming out of the river to go into spawn, so thats what I targeted. I keyed in on
three areas, because I did not have a lot of time to waste. I just ran back and forth to my three spots, and
I couldnt have asked for a better day. I was using a -ounce Oldhams Jig in black and blue. Whenever
I would fnd structure that it would get hung up on, I switched to a -ounce Sniper Lures Trigger Craw
cause I knew it wouldnt get hung up. I was able to catch around 20 fsh total throughout the day.
Morris snares co-angler title
John Morris of Houston, Texas, weighed a fve-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 2 ounces Saturday to win
$1,648 in the co-angler division.
After the ffth Cowboy Division tournament is complete, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on
point standings will qualify for the Oct. 18-20 Regional Championship on the Red River in Natchitoches,
La. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury
outboard and a Chevy Silverado, while co-anglers will fsh for a new Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower
Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the
season, fve in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional
tournament and compete to fnish in the top six, which then qualifes them for one of the longest-running
championships in all of competitive bass fshing the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy.
The 2012 BFL All-American is being held May 17 19 on the Potomac River in National Harbor, Md. Top
winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Lake levels are rising and the lunker bass are hiding in the stained waters. We are excited to see
the area lake levels rise to be close to normal pool level. The new cover that the bass have to hide in
is fantastic! Stained waters and fresh growth of cover have given the bass the ability to hide and give
fsherman a hard time to fnd them.
I attended a bass seminar a few years back and one interesting conversation was about the vision
of the largemouth bass. There are many senses that bass have but lets frst take a look at the vision of
the bass. First off this brings up the question Do bass see colors? The answer is Yes they do. While
other fsh see in two dimensions, Largemouth Bass can see in three dimensions. Their site ranges
from 5 inches away from their snout to about 100 feet, depending on how clear the water is. Bass are
primarily sight feeders and this is why the different color baits really make a difference.
As they close in on their prey, another much more powerful sense actually takes over.
This other Extreme sense is known as their lateral line. Their lateral line most often determines
whether theres a fnal strike and when they are honing in on prey, its this sense that becomes the
basis for their striking decision.
Largemouth Bass have what we call a lateral line. A fshs lateral line extends from the back of
its fll plate to the center of its tail and is very sensitive to vibration. Its like an organ, made up of
highly sensitive nerve endings, found on both sides of their body. It enables a bass to sense pressure
and currents, and helps to detect other fsh and objects moving through the water. The lateral line is
necessary so that the bass can fnd prey in literally, total darkness. They sense prey by their lateral line
picking up the vibrations in the water and they can easily tell what size, speed and shape their prey is.
Its these vibrations that will determine if a bass will strike or not. So youll want to
make sure that your bait and action are presented to them properly at a time thats conducive to
their seasonal habits.
Also keep in mind that bass have no eyelids and cant stand direct sunlight for very long. So theyll
be viewing their food selection from a shady hiding spot.
If the fsherman will adapt to the senses of the largemouth bass, their fshing trips will be very
productive. Remember that while fshing stained water, heavy vibrating baits such as a deep cup
spinner bait or a bright colored crank bait may be your go to bait.
You may also want to think about the gear ratio of the reel you use. Throwing spinner baits may
require a 7:1 ratio but the crank bait may work better using a 5:1 ratio reel. Then you can think about
Task Specifc rods. A task specifc rod matched to a style of fshing can help a fsherman move to the
next level of fshing.

Sanford wins 5k+ with the Bassmaster
Weekend Series on Lake Sam Rayburn

Roy Sanford won it all during the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster
Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Southeast
Texas Division 10 opener, held March 17, 2012, on Lake Sam
Rayburn.
Running out of the Umphrey Pavilion landing near Jasper, the
47-year-old Sam Rayburn angler caught fve bass going 18.03
pounds. Catching a total of nine keepers, he anchored his bag
with a 6.72-pounder that won the Boater Division big bass title.
For the Boater Division victory, he collected $5,000 with a $680
bonus for the big bass.
I fshed really shallow, Sanford explained. The pressure
was tremendous. I really had to slow down the presentation to
catch any fsh. I was throwing a weightless watermelon lizard,
just letting it sink. The big fsh came out of less than a foot of
water.
In second for the 138 boaters, Stephen Johnston, 42, of
Hemphill brought in a fve-bass tournament limit weighing
15.72 pounds with a 5.75-pound kicker. He earned a check for
$2,239.
I threw a Carolina rig and keyed on inside grass lines,
Johnston explained. The boat sat in 10 feet of water and I threw
a V&M watermelon blue lizard into about fve feet of water. I
dragged it slowly across the bottom. I caught about 18 keepers.
Phil Hennigan, 44, of Center came in third among the boaters
with a fve-bass limit weighing 15.69 pounds. He caught eight
keepers and went home with $1,492.
I ran up north, Hennigan revealed. With the water levels
coming up, I really didnt have any preconceived ideas on what
to do. I just went fshing. I was sight fshing with a fuke. After
the sun got up, I switched to a swim jig. I also fipped a 3/8-
ounce green pumpkin watermelon jig with a watermelon candy
speed craw.
Bradley W. Stringer of Huntington took fourth place with fve
bass at 15.65 pounds including a 4.50-pound kicker. William
Bill Lee of Harker Heights rounded out the top fve boaters
with fve bass at 14.76 pounds including a 6.01-pound kicker.
In the Co-Angler Division, Melvin Henslee, 71, of Beaumont
took it all. He landed three bass going 15.64 pounds for a 5.21-
pound average. He capped his bag with a 7.68-pounder that
set the tournament lunker standard. For the win, he pocketed
$2,500 with an extra $338 for the bucketmouth.
I caught all of my fsh before 8:30 a.m. and we continued to
catch fsh all day, Henslee said. I probably caught 40 fsh. I was
throwing a weightless watermelon magic fuke in very shallow
water, less than two feet deep. I worked very slowly. The wind
came up around 8:30 a.m. and the big fsh moved out of the
grass into deeper water.
In second for the co-anglers, Jeff C. Stimits of Buna landed
a three-bass daily division limit weighing 11.71 pounds. He
anchored his bag with a 4.82-pound kicker.
Dusty R. McFadden of Nacogdoches took third among the
co-anglers with three bass and 10.54 pounds capped by a 5.06-
pounder. Rocky Wostal of Humble brought in three keepers for
9.63 pounds with a 4.64-pound kicker. In ffth place for the
co-anglers, Tommy Nail of Dayton found three keepers weighing
9.11 pounds with one 5.07-pound kicker.

ZWOLLE, La. Chris Wilkerson of Conroe, Texas, weighed a
fve-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 1 ounce Saturday to win the
Walmart Bass Fishing League Cowboy Division event on Toledo
Bend. For his victory, Wilkerson earned $4,071.
I fshed the frst FLW Tour major of the year last week on
Hartwell, said Wilkerson. I had a real rough tournament, so I
decided to fsh this event to try to regain some of my confdence.
Its nice to be able to prove to myself that can I still catch fsh and
win. Everyone has the same tools and equipment; its totally a
mental confdence game.
I was sight fshing for the entire day, Wilkerson went on to
say. There was a tremendous amount of boat traffc due to a few
other tournaments taking place that day, and there must have
been close to 1,000 boats on the lake. I wanted to just blow in,
drop the poles, jerk the fsh and move on. This was impossible for
me due to the traffc and congestion, so I had to slow down and
take it easy and ease around all the boats to get my fsh.
I was fshing a Bruiser Baits Intruder in 5 to 8 feet of water for
pretty much the entire day, Wilkerson continued. I was fshing
the south end of the lake, all the way to the dam. We went out of
the north end of the lake, so it was two hours of running just to
get there. I expected to catch a bigger bag of fsh than I did, but
Im glad I regained my confdence and Im ready for the next FLW
Tour major at Table Rock.
Rose nets co-angler crown
Keith Rose of Harleton, Texas, weighed a fve-bass limit totaling
13 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win $1,535 in the co-angler
division.
The next BFL Cowboy Division tournament is scheduled for
April 28 on the Atchafalaya Basin in Morgan City, La. After the ffth
Cowboy Division tournament is complete, the top 40 boaters and
40 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct.
18-20 Regional Championship on the Red River in Natchitoches,
La. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518 with
a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a Chevy
Silverado, while co-anglers will fsh for a new Ranger Z518 with a
200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers,
with 120 tournaments throughout the season, fve in each
division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division
qualify for a regional tournament and compete to fnish in the
top six, which then qualifes them for one of the longest-running
championships in all of competitive bass fshing the Walmart
BFL All-American presented by Chevy. The 2012 BFL All-American
is being held May 17 19 on the Potomac River in National
Harbor, Md. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart
Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Toledo Bend Reservoir after landing a total catch
of 17 pounds, 1 ounce. For his efforts, Wilkerson
netted over $4,000 in winnings.
Keith Rose of Harleton, Texas, took rst place in the
Co-angler Division at the March 17 Walmart BFL

after landing a total catch of 13 pounds, 3 ounces.
Rose took home over $1,500 in prize money.
