Research Agenda For 2012

Abstract: The research agenda for Krishnan Subramanian in the year 2012 is described below. This document is bound to evolve over the year but it is good enough to give an idea of what is in store. Krishnan Subramanian Principal Analyst, Rishidot Research LLC

Research Topics
The research topics spans three areas including IaaS, PaaS and Enterprise Software but they are interconnected to fit the big picture we see coming, Great Computing Convergence. This is the outline of my research for this year and we will publish reports periodically to share our findings.

Federated Clouds (IaaS)

We will continue our research on federated clouds. With the definition of federated cloud ecosystem out of the way, we will focus on the evolution of the market in detail. We will study about interoperability between various cloud platforms, cloud service brokers, marketplaces, etc.. We will also study the trends in the federated cloud infrastructure market to understand its evolution, as PaaS becomes the entry point to cloud services. This year, we will be focusing on cloud infrastructure market in India, understanding the problems and potential for various players wanting to set up shop in the country.

Intelligent Platforms (PaaS)

We will identify the core attributes of the next iteration of Platform as a Service, which we call as Intelligent Platforms. Intelligent Platforms are required to build the next generation enterprise applications, which will consume intelligence from various data services (based on the vast volumes of data organizations collect and publicly available datasets), tweak themselves to produce even better data exhibiting self organized behavior. Once we identify the core attributes of Intelligent Platforms, we will try to understand how the federated cloud ecosystem on the infrastructure layer will fit into this model.

Enterprise Software
We will define the core attributes of enterprise cloud applications and also present a model for next generation of enterprise cloud applications. We will understand the dynamics between enterprise applications, cloud platforms, big data, analytics, etc.. We will use this understanding to tweak our model for Intelligent Platforms further.

Clouds As Complex Adaptive Systems

We will continue our understanding of cloud services as a complex adaptive system and we will try to develop a quantitative model around it. We will also try to see if we can find a correlation between Prof. Geoffrey Wests model on Cities as well as Simon Wardley lifecycle model for business and technology. If we find a correlation, we will try to find a quantitative connection. This is an ongoing long term academic project which we hope will help the industry in the coming years.
