Week One: Main goal for this week: Introduction of novel and accompanying movies Monday Description of activities

We will be reading the poem A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes and looking at the various covers of the novel. Tuesday Read the first 2 pages (before dialogue starts) map out the setting based on the stage direction given: discuss setting and characters. Wednesday Read from when dialogue starts until before Mama enters. Students watch two movie adaptations of this scene. Thursday Finish Scene One: Put students in small groups and have them be a particular role -show movie clips that correspond to the reading. Friday Review the reading: reshow the clips from the week. Have students fill out In the movie/ in the book worksheet to find differences between assigned scenes. In groups, students will watch assigned scenes and fill out worksheet that compares the film and the play.

What students will be doing

Students will be analyzing the poem in-depth and looking at the various covers of the play and making a prediction. We will read the poem and have a class discussion about the significance. We will then lead a discussion about the different covers, asking important questions.

Students will create map of how they interpret the Youngers house to look like; map outline, colors, furniture, etc.

Students will be introduced to Walter, Ruth, Travis, Beneatha and will compare these depictions to the movies shown.

Students will be reading the remainder of scene one in small groups, having each student read a specific characters lines. Show movie clips in order to prepare them for the activity on Friday. Teacher will break up the class into 5 groups and have them read the rest of scene one. The teacher will circulate the classroom checking to make sure students are on task. After they are finished, the teacher will show the movie clips from scene one to compare the text to the movie. Students have now been exposed to all of Younger family; development of characters.

What/how youll teach

We will read aloud the first pages of the play, afterwards instruct students to map out their own image of the apartment based on the text. Lead a discussion based on the various interpretations.

Teacher will act as narrator and students will read using readers theatre and switching off roles; Then teacher will show two movie clips.

We will teach about the author/directors choices through comparing the various adaptations.

What will be learned (and how will you know?)

Students will learn what influenced Hansberry to write A Raisin in the Sun and the significance of the different covers of the novel.

Students will learn about the variety of interpretations that come from a text and the importance of setting to help learn about themes.

Students will learn the variety of ways in which an author/playwright can depict characters; stress personal interpretation.

Students will learn about authors craft and this will be evident in the worksheet.
