Le Corbusier wrote about the "Five points towards a new architecture" in 1926 which changed the face to how people design structures that we consider shelter. Through Corbu's architecture there were many ideas and design that were inspired by it's form, and purpose. One is fashion, specically Mod fashion in the 1960's. Throughout this exhibition you will see how the Five points towards a new architecture essay is related to fashion, hair, and a Mod lifestyle.

The facade extends beyond the supporting structure and is therefore allowed to be designed freely independent from the rest. This freedom is paralleled through the patterns and textures and focus on natural shapes in the 1960s. One of the best examples of this is through the introduction of the tube top where the neck and shoulders were exposed and showed off the body.

Corbusier's goal for the ground-plan was to allow absolute freedom for the design. This means that the interior walls could be placed independent from the rest of the plan. This offset the cost of concrete and allowed the supporting walls to exist as "membranes" of any thickness. The 1960s ushered in a time of independent thought where fashion reflected free design through changes in how many women saw and revealed their bodies. It also introduced new patterns and textures and innovative ideas that created the word "mod" relating to modern design and a change in the way things had been seen before.

The purpose of a long, horizontal "ribbon" window was to obtain the maximum and equal amount of illumination within a space." In the same way, stylists like Vidal Sassoon used hair as a means of opening up various angles and bringing a new light to different parts of the face or neck. These often followed the natural bone structure of the face much like the concrete foundational structure created through architectural designs by Corbusier.

"To solve a problem scientifically means in the first place to distinguish between its elements." Corbusier wanted the supports of his structures to support the piece throughly, no matter the size of the building. If they are calculated just right there is no need to consider the rest of the building, just that it's supported. "Just like the supports in Corbusier's structures women's legs are considered support figures. They are the pillars of the human body. They are supporting the body that holds beautiful fashion dresses, or mini skirts. The neck is also considered a supportive system for the head, but also it hold the hair structure, which shows contrast and a strong piece of design.

"In this way the roof garden will become the most favored place in the building". The roof gardens are considered to the place to have the most vegetation, so it would also be considered to need the most maintenance. This is to be compared with hair, because trends change, and some trends need more attention than others. The 1960's short, sassy haircuts were considered to be the more appropriate shape for the face, but take a lot of maintenance when growing out the hair cut. Also, shaping it just right for the space provided is key.

Mod plus Modern is a statement being made about how Corbusier's architecture has inuenced more than just other architects. It has inuenced the way we dress, style, and present our selves as people as well. You may not think that mini skirts, or platform shoes could be connected to pilloties or pillars used in buildings and structures now, but we'll make you think different.
