stronglyrecommendsthatnofurtherdevelopmentoccurwithVBAandArcGISDesktop.Users
whohavecustomfunctionalitybuiltusingVBAshouldactivelyplanstrategiestorewritetheir
applicationsusingasupporteddevelopmentlanguagesuchasPython,VB.NET,orC#sotheir
applicationscontinuetobeoperationalandsupportedinfuturereleasesofArcGIS.Tohelpwith
themigrationprocess,ArcGIS10.1willincludetheVBACompatibilitysetupthatwillallow
existingVBAcodetoexecuteuntilthemigrationiscomplete.
ArcGIS10.0isthelastreleasethattheArcObjectsSDKforMicrosoft.NETwillsupportVisual
Studio2008.
ARCINFOWORKSTATION10.0

ArcGIS10.0isthelastplannedreleaseofArcInfoWorkstation.However,ArcInfoWorkstation
10.0canbeusedinconjunctionwithnewerversionsofArcGISDesktop;knownissuesarethat
ArcDocwillnotopeninWindowsversionsthatdonotincludelegacyWindowsHelpsupport,
andthattheSDElayerandDBMSconnectfunctionalitywillnotbeupgradedbeyondthe
versionssupportedatArcGIS10.UserswillcontinuetobeabletousetheirexistingArcInfo
Workstation10versionastherestoftheArcGISproductsandtechnologiesevolve,butwewill
notreleasenewerversionsofArcInfoWorkstation.

[Added9/27/2011]ArcInfoWorkstationwillmovefromtheGeneralAvailabilityPhasetothe
MaturePhaseasofJanuary1st,2012.

ARCIMS10.0

ArcGIS10.0wasthelastreleaseofArcIMS;wewillnolongershipArcIMSinreleasesafterArcGIS
10.0.WiththeadoptionofArcGISServerandthemoveto64bitservers,ArcIMSisnolonger
therecommendedproductforproducingwebmaps.WhilenolongershippedaspartofArcGIS,
thecurrentversionofArcIMS(version10.0)willbecontinuedtobesupportedaspartofthe
ArcGIS10.0lifecycle.

componentofArcGISServerontheSolarisplatformbeyondtheArcGIS10.0release.

ArcGISServer10.0isthelastArcGISServerreleasewithsupportforlocalconnectionsfromWeb
ADFapplications.The10.1WebADFapplicationswillonlysupportlocalconnectionstoServer
versionspriorto10.1.Werecommenddevelopersusinglocalconnectionsforaccessingfine
grainedArcObjectsmigratetheirbusinesslogictoServerObjectExtensions.ForWebADFbased
editingapplications(allofwhichuseLocalconnections),weurgeuserstolookatalternative
webeditingtoolsbasedintheArcGISWebMappingAPIs.

ArcGISServer10.0isthelastreleasewithsupportfor32bitoperatingsystems.Thenext
releaseofArcGISServer(10.1)willrunnativelyasa64bitapplication,requiring64bitoperating
systems.[Added8/18/2011]ThisincludestheArcSDEtechnologycomponentofArcGISServer
knownastheArcSDEapplicationserver.

ArcGISServer10.0isthelastreleasewithsupportforVBScriptorJScriptonArcGISServerfor
Linux.VBScriptandJScriptwillcontinuetobesupportedonArcGISServerforMicrosoft
Windows.Pythonscriptingwillbeaddedasareplacementforthesescriptinglanguagesand
ArcGISDesktopwillsupportauthoringPythonscriptsinareaswhereVBScriptandJScriptare
presentlyused.

ArcGISServer10.0isthelastreleasesupportingpublishingnonoptimizedmapdocuments
(MXDfiles).Thenextmajorreleasewillonlysupportpublishingoptimizedmaps(MSDs)asthat
isthebestpracticeformappublishing.

ARCGISIMAGESERVER10.0

ArcGIS10.0isthelastreleaseofthestandaloneArcGISImageServerproduct.Thisproducthas
beenreplacedwiththeArcGISServerImageExtension.Anyexistingusersofthestandalone
ImageServerproductortechnology(usingISDeffiles),shouldplantheirmigrationtotheArcGIS
ServerImageextension.ExistingArcGISImageServerusersshouldmigratefromusingISDeffile
tousingtheMosaicDatasets,anewdatamodelinthegeodatabaseformanagingcollectionsof
imageryandrasters.MosaicDatasetsarecreatedandeditedwithArcGISDesktop(ArcEditor
andArcInfo)andpublishedusingArcGISServerwiththeImageExtension.ExistingISDeffiles
canbeaddedtoMosaicDatasetsforconversion.

[Added8/18/2011]ArcGISDesktop,ArcGISEngineandControls,andArcReader10.1willno
longersupportorprovidepopupcontextsensitivehelpinWinHelp(HLPfile)format.NoHLP
fileswillbedeliveredwith10.1.Thepopupcontextsensitivehelpmechanism,includingthe
WhatsThistoolintheStandardtoolbarofalltheDesktopapplications,isremovedat10.1.
Helpforcommandsat10.1isprovidedviaribbonstylemultilinetooltips,someofwhich
containF1linksthatlaunchspecificDesktopHelptopics.Thehelpfordialogsisprovidedvia
clickablehyperlinksorHelpbuttonsinthekeydialogsthatalsolaunchspecificDesktopHelp
topics.

ARCINFOWORKSTATION

TherearenoplanstoreleaseanewversionofArcInfoWorkstationatArcGIS10.1.However,
ArcInfoWorkstation10.0willbeabletobeusedinconjunctionwithnewerversionsofArcGIS

Desktop.UserswillcontinuetobeabletousetheirexistingArcGIS10.0version,butwewillnot
releasenewerversions.

however,wewillnolongerprovidenewreleases.Usersshoulddevelopaplanandmigrateto
theArcGISServerandWebAPItechnology.

ARCGISSERVER10.1

ArcGISServer10.1willbethelastplannedreleasefortheArcGISServerWebADFs(Application
DeveloperFramework)forbothMicrosoft.NETandJava.EsriwillcontinuesupportingtheWeb
ADFsduringthe10.1releasecyclebutonlyfixestocriticalissueswillbeaddressed.Nonew
functionalityorenhancementrequestswillbeaddressedfortheWebADFs.Webapplication
developersareencouragedtomovetoawebservicesbasedpatternwiththeArcGISWeb
MappingAPIsforJavaScript,Flex,orSilverlight.

[Correction8/18/2011]ArcGISServer10.1willnolongersupportlocalconnections(DCOM
connections).ArcGISServer10.1willbeawebservices(REST,SOAP,andOGC)serveronly.This
willhaveanimpacton:

ThewebeditingfunctionalityofdefaultWebADFwillnolongerbesupported.ArcGIS
10.1willcontinueevolvingandenhancingitswebeditingcapabilitiesontopofthenew
FeatureService(newinArcGIS10)andtheArcGISWebMappingAPIs.

Customdevelopedapplicationsfrombusinesspartnersandusersusingfinegrained
ArcObjectsthroughDCOMwillnotbesupported.Thankstotherecentenhancements
inServerObjectExtensions,developerscannowmigratecustombusinesslogicwritten
atthewebapplication(WebADF)leveltocustomArcGISServerservices.Development
againstfinegrainedArcObjectscontinuestobefullysupportedfollowingtheServer
ObjectExtensionpatternforextendingArcGISServerservices.Esrihasbeen
recommendingthisapproachforsometimealready,duetoitssimplicityandimproved
performance.

WebADFapplicationsusingnonpooledserviceswillnotbesupported.Overtheyears,
somecustomershaveadoptedapatternfortheirArcGISServerapplicationsthatuse
nonpooledservices.

ArcGISServer10.1willnolongersupportpublishing[Correction/Added8/18/2011]ofArcGIS
Desktopmapdocumentswithoutanalyzingthemfirst.In9.3.1weintroducedtoolsforanalyzing
yourmapdocumentsviatheMapServicePublishingtoolbarinArcGISDesktop.ArcGIS10.1will
notallowpublishingofmapdocumentsthathavenotbeenpreviouslyanalyzed.Byenforcing
