TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

“CASE STUDY OF INDIA”

Abstract:

Tourism and Hospitality both are the two sides of same coin. The evaluation and growth of Tourism
suggest that the Hospitality industry has taken a shape as is designed by the pace and growth of Tourism all
over the world. Whether it is Tourism or Hospitality , Education, Training and Re-Training has resumed a
prominent place in the growth of this component of service sector.

Introduction:

Tourism and Hospitality has been a vital component of Indian economy for, ages, however, the scientific
and professional approach to its development and promotion has evolved in the post independence era
when the Government of India started looking for an alternative sector to substantiate its efforts to boost the
agrarian economy as well as to earn Foreign Exchange to support the desired Industrial growth rate.

The planners looked at Tourism as probably the only economic activity with a multi dimensional magnitude
generate employment (with every investment of Rs. 1 million it has the potential to generate 76 jobs as
compared to 56 in Agriculture and 43 in Manufacturing Industries), earn Foreign Exchange and Poverty
Elimination. It was with this view that planned growth of Tourism and Hospitality started National Council
for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) was set up In 1970’s and Indian Institute of
Travel and Tourism Management was set up in 1986 under the patronage of Ministry of Tourism,
Government of India to provide trained Man Power.

Objectives:

Tourism in India has just started reaping the benefits of global leap in Tourist arrivals and hence,The paper
will focus on the critical issue of whether we are prepared to cater to ever increasing number of Tourist
arrivals in terms of available skilled and Trained man power or not. If not then what are the remedial
measures while the available infrastructural and superstructural support for Education and Training in
Hospitality and Tourism in India. In India the investment in Tourism and Hospitality is expected to amount
to Rs. 35, 000 Crores in next 4 years and if we analyse this form the perspective of Employment generation

for Trained man power we can conclude that there will be one new job every 37 seconds in Tourism in
India.

Methodology:

The scope of study calls for both Primary and Secondary research and the result produced can be of
immense importance for researchers of the same field due to its practical application.
