Chemlok 205/220 Rubber-to-Metal Adhesive System

Description
Chemlok 220 adhesive bonds a variety of elastomers during vulcanization. Adhesion is greatly improved when Chemlok 220 adhesive is used in conjunction with Chemlok 205 primer. This ensures a stronger bond to metal substrates and increases the environmental resistance of the elastomer-tometal bonded assembly.

Features and Benefits

Versatile bonds a wide variety of rubbers such as: natural rubber, SBR, polychloroprene, nitrile, and polyisoprene to various metals and other rigid substrates. Environmental Resistance provides superior resistance to heat, water, salt spray, chemicals, oils, solvents, and corrosive atmospheres. Easy to Apply can be applied to metal parts in a variety of ways, including: dip, spray, brush, or roller coat methods.

Surface Preparation Metal Preparation

Thoroughly clean metal surfaces prior to primer application. Remove protective oils, cutting oils, greases, etc. by solvent degreasing or alkaline cleaning. Remove rust, scale, or oxide coatings by mechanical or chemical cleaning methods. Apply Chemlok 205 primer to stainless steel, aluminum, brass, or other nonferrous substrates within one-half hour after cleaning. For ferrous substrates such as steel, a longer layover can be tolerated if no rust is formed. For additional information on Chemlok 205 primer, refer to Bulletin DS92050L.

When using Chemlok 205 as a primer under Chemlok 220 adhesive, apply a thin uniform coat of the primer over the prepared metal. A dry film thickness of 0.2 - 0.4 mils (5-10 microns) is normal. Then apply Chemlok 220 adhesive over the Chemlok 205 primer layer. A dry film thickness of 0.5 -1.0 mils (25-50 microns) is normal. These thicknesses can be obtained using the guidelines shown in Table 2. Optimum film thickness is dependent on the rubber formulation and the level of adhesion required. Allow the adhesive to dry until visual examination shows that all solvent has evaporated. Drying time, at room temperature, will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes for the Chemlok 205 primer and 45 to 60 minutes for the Chemlok 220 adhesive. Drying times may be shortened by the use of hot air drying ovens or tunnels. Moderate drying temperatures of 150-200F (66-93C) are satisfactory, but temperatures as high as 300F (149C) may be used for short periods of time. Actual metal temperature should not exceed 180F (83C). Maximum air flow at minimum temperatures will give the best results. Refer to the Chemlok Guide to Application and Handling for further details.

Rubber Preparation
Good bonding practice requires the presentation of a fresh, free-flowing stock surface to the bond interface. Excessive heat during preparation may pre-cure the stock and interfere with bond formation. Certain compounding ingredients such as oil and plasters may detract from the bondability of many natural and synthetic rubber compounds. Avoid excessive amounts of oily or waxy compounding ingredients that have limited solubility in the polymer. Milling or mixing techniques should assure maximum dispersion of all ingredients. Proper rubber compounding, adequate scorch-time, and appropriate wetting at the elastomer-adhesive interface will improve adhesion.

Curing
Chemlok 220 adhesive can be used to bond rubber by compression, transfer, injection molding, or by other molding procedures used to make bonded parts. As with other Chemlok adhesives, maximum adhesion is obtained when the rubber stock has completely cured. Ideal bonding conditions exist when both the adhesive and the rubber cure at the same time. To accomplish this, the adhesive coated metal parts should be placed in the mold and the cavity filled with rubber as quickly as possible. Dry films of Chemlok 205 primer and Chemlok 220 adhesive remain firm at molding temperatures. During transfer or injection molding operations, the adhesive shows minimal tendency to wipe or sweep. Loading of multiple-cavity molds usually results in pre-baking the first metal parts to be loaded. Be aware that during multiple-cavity loading, the pre-baking begins with the first loaded metal parts. Keep mold loading cycles to a minimum to prevent adhesive and rubber pre-curing.

Mixing
Stir both Chemlok 205 primer and Chemlok 220 adhesive thoroughly before use. Agitate sufficiently during use to keep dispersed solids uniformly suspended. Use a high speed propeller type agitator or the agitator supplied with the drum.

Application
Chemlok 205 primer and Chemlok 220 adhesive can be applied by using spray, dip, brush application methods, or by any method that gives a uniform coating and avoids excessive runs and tears. When using brushing or roller coating methods, the best bonds will be achieved by a uniform and complete surface coverage. When dipping, proper withdrawal will help reduce the occurrence of tears and drip edges. When spraying, the adhesive must by wet when it reaches the metal part. If drying occurs in the air before reaching the metal, cobwebbing and poor adhesion will result.

However, Chemlok 220 adhesive will resist moderate pre-baking times without effecting bond performance. Transfer or injection molds need properly designed runners and sprues, as well as adequate pressures. This prevents rubber precuring before the mold cavities are completely filled.

Storage
Store unopened container at 40F - 90F (4C - 32C), and preferably at 70F - 80F (21C - 27C).

Performance Tests Using Chemlok 205 Primer and Chemlok 220 Adhesive
A. Bonding to Various Rubber Stocks Test results given in Table 3 show that a variety of rubber stocks can by bonded using Chemlok 220 adhesive. Cold rolled steel was selected as a typical metal for these tests. The steel was prepared by vapor degreasing, blasting with steel grit, and vapor degreasing again. An exceptionally wide variety of stocks can be bonded with Chemlok 220 adhesive although variations in compounding can cause differences in the bondability of some rubber stocks. In such cases, specially designed Chemlok adhesives are available. B. Bonding to Various Substrates Tests results given in Table 4 revealed two outstanding features of Chemlok adhesives; 1 The ability to bond a wide variety of substrates using Chemlok 205 primer with Chemlok 220 adhesive, 2 The ability to bond many substrates with a minimum of surface treatment. C. Environmental Resistance Test results given in Table 5 demonstrate the resistance of Chemlok bonded assemblies in adverse environments. Test samples were stressed with a high peel load during environmental exposures in order to encourage failure.

Clean Up
Solvents such as xylene and MEK have been shown to work well before heat is applied. Once cured, cleaning can best be accomplished by mechanical blasting methods.

Subsequent Processing
Although the hot tear strength of Chemlok 205 and Chemlok 220 adhesive is excellent, care should still be used when removing parts form the mold. Bonds formed with Chemlok 205 primer and Chemlok 220 adhesive are resistant to many adverse environmental conditions. Electroplating or anodizing of metal parts after fabrication will not affect bond strength. However, bonded assemblies should not be treated with ketone base paints or solutions as bond strength may be weakened.
