Its very easy to say what you like in Chinese. The word for like is xhuan. So you say
W xhuan (I like )
followed by the activity or thing that you like. If you dont like something, you say,
W b xhuan (I dont like )
followed by the activity or thing that you dont like.

If there is something or an activity that you enjoy doing on a regular basis, you say
W pngchng xhuan
meaning, I normally like, followed by the name of the activity.

Lets look at the names of some activities.

d dinz yux (to play video games)

To ask for someones name in a formal and polite way, say,
Nn gu xng? (Whats your surname?).
Youll hear this often in the service industry, as this is the standard way to ask a guest for
his or her name.

The word i means love, or to love. It can also be used to refer to something that you
like to do very much.
For example:
W xhuan knsh. (I like to read.)
W i knsh. (I love to read.)

The word iho refers to a hobby. It also has connotations of something which you take
great pleasure in doing; whereas xhuansimply refers to something that you like.

Here are some more hobbies and pastimes.
d gorfqi (to play golf)
d mjing (to play mahjong)
zufn (to cook)
shucng gwn (to collect antiques)
xiq (to play chess)
jyu (to collect stamps)

To tell someone that you are able to do something, you use the word hu.
You say,
W hu,
followed by the name of the thing or action.
W b hu.
means Im not able to, or I dont know how to.

To find out if someone can do something or knows how to do something, we use hu and
ma to form a question.
N hu shu Zhngwn ma? (Can you speak Chinese?)
To answer briefly, just say hu for yes and b hu for no.
To answer in full, say
W hu shu Zhngwn. (Yes, I can speak Chinese.)
or
W b hu shu Zhngwn. (No, I cant speak Chinese.)

If you only know a little bit of Chinese, you can say
W hu shu ydin Zhngwn. (I can speak a little Chinese.)

Do you know how to do any of these things mentioned in the book?
bin msh (to do magic tricks)
d wngqi (to play tennis)

The word can has a few meanings. It means having the ability to do something (I can
speak Chinese). It also means asking for permission or making a request (Can I come in?).
The word huis used for the first meaning, and the word ky is used for the second one.

The word ydin means a little. And it works and behaves a lot like its English
counterpart.
ydin shu means, a little water
ydin jnzhng means, a little nervous
W hu shu ydin Zhngwn. means, I can speak a little Chinese.

More Yes-No questions
There are two ways to form yes-no questions in Chinese. We could add ma at the end of
the sentence, which we learned in Unit 1. OR we could use a positive plus a negative
statement to form a question.

Lets take a look at the chart in the book:
N huma? (Can you?)
N hu b hu?
N shma? (Are you?)
N sh b sh?
N yoma? (Do you want?)
N yo b yo?
N xhuanma? (Do you like?)
N x b xhuan?

Berlitz, Basic Mandarin Chinese Audioscript

10
N kyma? (Can you?)
N k b ky?
N yuma? (Do you have?)
N yu mi yu?

For example, you can change the question
N sh Migu rn ma? (Are you American?)
into
N sh b sh Migu rn?

Take note that:
* Both xhuan and ky have two syllables, so only the first syllable is repeated before the
word b.
** The word yu (meaning: to have) has its own unique negative form, mi yu. So when
we use the positive+negative form to construct a question, we say yu mi yu.

Page 105
Its easy to answer these yes-no questions. Lets refer to the book again.
N hu b hu?
Hu, w hu B, w b hu
N sh b sh?
Sh, w sh B, w b sh
N yo b yo?
Yo, w yo B, w b yo
N x b xhuan?
Xhuan, w xhuan B, w b xhuan
N k b ky?
Ky, w ky B, w b ky
N yu mi yu?
Yu, w yu Mi yu, w mi yu

For example,
N sh b sh Migu rn? (Are you American?)

Berlitz, Basic Mandarin Chinese Audioscript

11
You could say,
Sh, w sh Migu rn. (Yes, I am American.)
or,
B, w b sh Migu rn. (No, I am not American.)

To find out what someone is doing, you say
N zi zu shnme? (What are you doing?)
Zi is a special word which indicates that an action is in progress, and it is always placed
before the main action word.

For example, xing (to think) is an action word.
To form a question, you say N zi xing shnme? (What are you thinking?)

Lets take a look at some pretty common actions in our everyday life:
ch (to eat)
d (to read)
h (to drink)
kn (to look; to see)
mi (to buy)
sh (to count)
wn (to play)
xi (to write)
xu (to learn)
zho (to look for)
zh (to cook)
zhnbi (to prepare).

So, N xinzi zi zu shnme? (What are you doing now?)

If you want to catch up with someone and find out what the person has been up to lately,
this is what you say:
N zi mng shnme?
It means Whats keeping you busy nowadays?
Or, N zujn mng shnme?
It means Whats keeping you busy recently?

If the person doesnt really want to elaborate, this is what you might hear:
Mi shnme.
It means Oh, nothing.
Or, W mng gngzu.
It means I was busy working.

Page 110
The word dngxi means something, some things or thing. Its a versatile word,
and its pretty useful when you want to be vague in your replies. Or when you genuinely
dont quite know how to put it, or how to say something in Chinese.

For example,
N zi zu shnme? (What are you doing?)
To give a general answer, you say,
W zi xing dngxi. (Im thinking of something.)
OR
W zi zho dngxi. (Im looking for something.)

Page 110
Close-up
The word dngxi means thing.
On its own, the Chinese character for dng means East, and the character for xi means
West. Put together, the two characters take on a whole new meaning.

This is a useful word for beginners. If you dont know the name of an object in Chinese,
this is what you say:

Zhge sh shnme dngxi?
It means What is this thing?
Or, Zhge dngxi jio shnme?
It means What is this thing called?

Page 111
To ask for more information about a persons likes or dislikes, you can form questions like
this.
N xhuan chng shnme g? (What songs do you like to sing?)
N xhuan kn shnme dinyng? (What movies do you like to watch?)
N xhuan tng shnme ynyu? (What music do you like to listen to?)
