VMS-200E
INNOVATION RIDE QUALITY VIBRATION & SOUND ANALYSIS SYSTEM FOR AUTOMATED PEOPLE MOVERS, ELEVATORS & ESCALATORS

Reprinted from Elevator World Magazine, March 1998

Thomas Instruments, Inc., headquarted in Spofford, New Hampshire, USA, is pleased to announce its new generation Vibration & Sound Monitoring System. The model VMS200E is smaller in size,, has more memory, and cost less! It is the only system that does Adjacent Peak to Peak Analysis and Jerk Analysis per National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) standards. The new WIN200E Software Program is the most powerful WINDOWS 95tm and WINDOWS 3.1tm software package available for ride quality analysis and report printing. The VMS200E/WIN200E Vibration Analysis System provides complete vibration and sound level monitoring, recording, computer analysis, and documentation. It is designed for ease of use. Included with the VMS200 system is the WIN200E software package. It is used to download events, analyze the data, and print reports. A simple yet detailed "one page" report that includes event logs, waveforms and a peak measurements box is particularly valuable. Several graphs can be generated to analyze acceleration, jerk, velocity/distance, RMS vibration, and vibration waveform peak-to-peak analysis. This information is extremely useful in identifying and locating problems with rails, rollers, pulleys and drives, electrical controls and sound.

This system is the only one available that takes ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Human Response To Whole Body Vibration to a new level in analysis and understanding. The human body is very sensitive to vibration. Anything that moves expose humans to mechanical vibration which can interfere with comfort. The VMS200E system provides a way to accurately measure and quantify vibration to ISO standards. Severity and limits of exposure, based on laboratory and field data, have been defined and established by ISO. It should be noted that human perception and response to vibration varies greatly from person to person and the standards are based on the averages of data from the measured effects and reactions by humans to vibration. There are four physical factors important to understanding and determining human response to vibration, they are: intensity, frequency, direction, and duration of the vibration. The VMS200E system uses the preferred measurement technique detailed in ISO Standards 4081, 2631/1, and 2631/2. Whole body vibration transmitted through the feet-to-head (vertical direction) of a standing person as well as side to side and front to back (transverse direction) are analyzed by using tools such as Root Means Square (RMS) vibration, Fourier Frequency analysis (FFT) and displaying the results over a selection of ISO Base Curves for acceptable vibration levels as perceived by human beings. The VMS200E unit is highly reliable and extremely accurate. The VMS200E is programmed with the easy to use four key switch pad or it can be programmed with your computer through the standard RS232 (9) pin serial port. The VMS200E unit is simply placed on the floor of the automated people mover, elevator or escalator step for complete vibration and sound level recordings produced by each ride. When a ride is recorded, the resulting data is automatically stored in the non-volatile memory of the VMS200E unit and the results are displayed on the four line LCD screen. All the events recorded in the VMS200E memory may be reviewed by scrolling through each event using the keypad. When convenient, the unit is connected to your PC for retrieval of events and event analysis. Detailed report printing and log keeping are easily done by any office person. This compact "self-contained" system can be carried by the inspector or repair crew to collect data on a one time or routine basis. Annual or bi-annual measurements will allow comparing and analyzing the ride, with respect to time, so that effective maintenance and improvements can be planned and performed, and safety ensured. The value of this system increases with experience and use and seems almost limitless.
