Modern Day Slavery Six Thinking Task

I think the big picture of modern day slavery is poverty. A lot of people are put into slavery because they are poor. They usually dont have enough money so they try to be trafficked into other countries where there is more work to do. When being trafficked, they are usually forced to become slaves and working hard labor. Most of the people that are enslaved have lived in poverty before. They sometimes are unemployed so they have to find work in new places and can sometimes get deceived by other people. Also another big picture aspect is what we buy. Most of modern day slaves are forced work and make products we buy. A lot of minerals and metals are mined by slaves. Also usually raw materials are collected/mined by slaves. A lot of times when companies buy raw material into making their products the raw materials have been produced by slaves. This means that even though we buy are stuff from famous brands, we might be buying something that has been made by slaves

There are about twenty-seven million slaves in the world. A slave is somebody who is forced to work without receiving payment under the threat of violence and is powerless to walk away. The majority of slaves in the world are found in either India or Africa. Slaves are often people who are poor and have little or no education. They are told that they can work in jobs that will make more money than their current ones but when they are trafficked into another country they are often forced to work for long periods of time without getting paid. A large number of slaves are children. Children are enslaved because theyre easy to trick and sometimes can be more valuable in certain jobs. Therere children in India that have been tricked and forced to work in carpet factories. The slave masters use child slaves because they have better eyesight and smaller hands which is important because you need a lot of precision when making carpets. Children are also sometimes forced to become child soldiers. There are about three-hundred thousand child soldiers in the world. They are mostly found in Africa and are forced to fight in civil wars. Sometimes they are also used behind the frontline as cooks or messengers. They are used as soldiers because they learn to use a gun quickly and are usually not afraid to die.

My feelings about modern day slavery are that Im very sad and angry. Im very sad because there are a lot of people that are forced to become slaves and have to work in very bad conditions. There is usually little hope for them to be rescued and even if theyre rescued they are still poor and usually have been hurt. Also Im frustrated because I think the police and government arent doing enough to stop slavery. I think that governments should be have ending slavery one of their top priorities and that governments should cooperate with each other in ending slavery. I also feel sorry for the slaves. They have to live in bad conditions and usually both physically and mentally hurt. Even if theyre rescued from being slaves, theyre still poor and live in poverty.

Modern day slavery is a very bad thing. A lot of people get killed or disabled by their slave masters. Usually when slaves resist their captors they will get beaten. Joseph Kony, he kidnaps children and forced them to become child soldiers. Sometimes he forces children to kill their parents and if the children refuse they will get killed. Another example is in India; a man was kidnapped and drugged. He was then taken to an illegal clinic and people took his kidneys and will sell it to rich people. Operations like these will usually kill him and or at least leaved him disabled. The operation is usually unhygienic and can sometimes lead to infections. Another bad thing that could happen is that in the Democratic Republic of Congo, sometimes women are kidnapped and forced to be sex slaves. They are raped and usually get HIV positive or pregnant. Even if they are rescued their family will usually dont let them back home because they have HIV or are pregnant.

If the government can get people about of poverty, those people will usually not become victim to slave masters. The police should also try doing more and try to arrest the people involved in the slave business. There should also be more strict laws that will give harsh punishment to people so they will be more unlikely to be involved in the slave business. The government should also help educate people. This will make them harder to trick and they can get better jobs. The government should also help ex-slaves get a job and get them out of poverty so that they wont need to go back to being slaves. Another thing that everybody can do is ask the shopkeepers where their products come from. If people stop buying products made by slaves then there will be fewer slaves. Also countries where is people who get trafficked from and into should have better security to stop people from being trafficked. If there is better security at airports and borders slaves wouldnt be trafficked and traffickers will be arrested. Businesses should also try to inquire where their products come from. They should stop buying any raw materials that come are produced from slaves. Also to end the problem of child soldiers, countries should help each other negotiate peace and stop wars. Countries should also stop selling weapons to areas with conflict.

There arent a lot of positive things about modern day slavery but there are a few positives. Something positive is that products made from slaves are cheaper. This is because the slaves dont really get paid so that will make the products they make cheaper. Slaves also work faster and produce more because they have to work longer shifts and usually dont have holidays. Another thing is that sometimes, after the slaves have worked for their slave masters for a long time and have paid the costs of being trafficked they are freed by their slave masters. These people will get a better life in the country they are trafficked into and will have a job that will give them more money.
