Throughout the history, the concept of entrepreneur has been viewed from different angles. An early example and the earliest definition of entrepreneur was a go-between. Marco Polo, who started trade routes to the Far East, used to sign a contract with a moneyed person to sell his goods. A common contract during that time provided a loan to merchant adventurers @ 22.5% including insurance. The capitalist was a passive risk bearer but the merchant adventurer took the active role in trading - bearing the physical and emotional risks. Since then, lot of water has flown on the definition of entrepreneur and the profile of the entrepreneurs. In the middle ages, an entrepreneur was a cleric, the person in-charge of great architectural work such as castles and fortifications, public buildings, abbeys and Cathedral. In the 17th century the connection of risk with entrepreneur developed. The entrepreneur was known as a person who entered into a contractual arrangement with the government to perform a service to supply stipulated products. In the 18th century the person with capital was differentiated from one who needed capital. Thus entrepreneur was distinguished from the capital provider; one of the reasons for this differentiation was the industrialization. In 19th and 20th century, the entrepreneurs were distinguished from managers and were viewed mostly from the economic perspective. They conceive idea and create enterprise for personal gain. In the 21st century entrepreneur is closely getting connected with idea generation and innovation. Thus, like the proverbial elephant, the entrepreneur is one of those things that is recognized when seen but difficult to define. background of common events.
